An ulcer is the result of an imbalance between aggressive and defensive factors. The pathology of ulcer is complex and may involve overproduction of acid or pepsin, inadequate mucosal defence, reflux of bile and pancreatic juice into stomach. Peptic ulcer is a classical example of the biopsychosocial model of disease and like most diseases, it has a multifactorial origin. Furthermore, peptic ulcer disease (PUD) is one of the common disorders affecting the digestive system. The lifetime risk of ulcer is 5-10 percent in developed countries. This book examines the psychosocial risk factors for developing peptic ulcers. It is shown that PUD occurs more frequently among individuals with anxiety and depressive disorders. The use of a fibrinogen- and thrombin-coated collagen patch for a perforated peptic ulcer is researched as a method to reduce morbidity and mortality rates. Very informative
For those of us suffering from both known and unknown stomach maladies (in my case the wonderful catchall dyspepsia, for which there is no cure -- see this book to have that driven home in full force!) The Ulcer Story is highly informative. Although it is written in quite a professional tone -- no layperson here -- still, I believe anyone can understand it and benefit from the many detailed descriptions of treatments, as well as the photographs.

I highly recommend this book.

I had H. pylori previous to discovering through an Endoscopic exam that a Peptic ulcer hadn't healed and a growth developed on a healed Duodenal ulcer. Result: Surgery.Afterward, I was so sick and no one had an answer for "what do I do now"?

Zinc Carosine
Great little booklet, lots of information. Still there are lots of questions it does not answer.

Pepzin GI Zinc Carnosine has worked very well for some of ourulcer and gastritis patients
Florida Detox and Wellness Institute has obtained some excellent patient outcomes, using the Zinc Carnosine supplements discussed in this book.The science presented is solid and credible and the Zinc Carnosine has worked well for erosive gastritis and peptic ulcers, with considerable relief occuring in days.

One patient who had been on acid blocking medications for years required Vitamin B12 injections to treat her pernicious anemia.

Since Zinc, Copper, Manganese and Molbdenum all compete with each other for absorption, testing for levels of all of these minerals would be wise, if Zinc Carnosine is continued for more than two months, since the recommended daily dose used in studies is 150 mg of Zinc daily.

We have encountered at least two patients who developed Bismuth toxicity, from extended self medication with Pepto Bismol, which did not work nearly as well as the Zinc Carnosine supplement.Bismuth toxicity can produce most of the symptoms of fibromyalgia.

The book makes a good case that zinc carnosine protects the stomach lining of people with ulcers. It follows that it would also protect the lining of other parts of the GI system, such as the esophagus. I got the book because of my concern for someone with Barrett's esophagus. He is now taking zinc carnosine (at the dose recommended by the author) twice a day. The author says to take it for only eight weeks, but what if one needs it indefinitely? I wish I had more information about zinc carnosine and Barrett's esophagus. ... Read more
