Product Description

Peripheral neuropathy, the variety of conditions that result when the nerves that connect to the brain and spinal cord are damaged or diseased, is commonly associated with diseases such as diabetes, HIV, alcoholism, and lupus. Although widespread — it affects 10–20 million people in the United States — information about the condition has been difficult to obtain. This essential guide explains what is known about peripheral neuropathy, including its causes and manifestations, and what can be done to manage it. Topics include drug therapy for the condition and its symptoms, interventional therapy, alternative medicines, caring for the feet, and much more. This book will enable patients to make informed decisions about their care.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative book.
The stories relayed in this book are real, and it is good to know you are not alone. And what you are experiencing is not in your head.It is also very depressing as there still is no cure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Numbness is not fun
This book is one complete great book on knowing about what all Peripheral Neuropathy is and whatever you need to know. Thanks to the author I can really appreciate useful and correct knowledge about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Since reading this book, I don't feel so alone.
Peripheral neuropathy(PN) is not only physically painful, it is emotionally very painful. I can no longer work at my life's profession, I cannot turn a doorknob, open my mail, even typing this hurts like the dickens. I no longer go many places...I fall a lot. I recently have felt like I am going nuts.
But then this book was recommended to me. I read it immediately upon arrival and had this WOW feeling.I still feel all the pain and isolation, but now I understand more about this disease, especially that I am probably sane because a whole bunch of folks feel exactly like I
do.
This nice book has many useful references and explains PN so I understand it. It gave me some ideas to ask my neurologist
. He had read the book, liked it and was quite open to trying one of the described treatments.
PN patients-this is a good book for you to read. PN caregivers-read it; it will give you some idea of what we are going through.
Thank you for listening.

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative
Most of the information is available over the internet. It is good to have a lot of it in one book, but I would not re-read or recommend for purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Peripheral Neuropathy Review

Product Description

Peripheral neuropathy has reached epidemic proportions in recent years. This condition has numerous causes, but can be associated with diseases such as HIV, alcoholism, diabetes, and lupus and may result from medical treatments such as chemotherapy. Symptoms include pain, numbness, loss of balance, and tingling or burning in the extremities. Although widespread, neuropathy is not well understood, and finding reliable information about it can be difficult. Written by a leading doctor in the field and a patient-expert, You Can Cope with Peripheral Neuropathy: 365 Tips for Living a Full Life covers such diverse topics as what to ask at doctor appointments, how to make the house easier to navigate, where to find a support group, how to use vitamins and herbs for treatment, ways to travel safe, and more. The information in this practical book is aimed at both the millions of people afflicted with neuropathy and the families, caregivers, and health-care providers who share the trauma of this debilitating disease.

2-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money
The tips offered in this book are really a lot of generic fluff meant to fill up pages with type.Very little is actually helpful.I was hoping for REAL help, as in "use this tool to help when you can do ____", or, "try this technique when you can't _____"etc.Instead it's a lot of positive thinking, asking others to do your laundry, get a hobby, get a dog, etc.Save you money. The other books on PN are much better than this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars As varied as the symptoms.
This book offers some advice to the "Pner" (someone with Peripheral neuropathy). Perhaps the most important message of the book is that there are coping mechanisms, and that an attitude really does help. Also comforting is to understand the variety of people that have it, the variety of symptoms, and access to support groups and online information..1/3 of neuropathy is idiopathic (no clear cause), and only 1/3 is diabetic.I might have preferred some more specific treatments, (lotions, or medicine) rather than the chapter on Travel and Hobbies.I was pleased that alternative therapies, like Reiki, were suggested as they may help in some cases. I also loved the Soren Kierkegaardquote. "Above all, do not lose your desire to walk.Every day I walk myself into a state of well being and walk away from every illness.

5-0 out of 5 stars You Can Cope with Peripheral Neuropathy: 365 Tips for living a full life
In this great book are ideas from patients with neuropathy, from people who have walked the walk and can talk the talk of those who live in this world of chronic illness, often with little support or help. Not everyone will like or value all the ideas, but everyone will find something to help them.We have lived too long without help and here it is.Coupled with Dr. Norman Latov's, M.D. PhD book on "Peripheral Neuropathy: When the Numbness, Weakness, and Pain won't Stop" and with Dr. Scott Berman, MD, a Psychiatrist with CIDP Patient's book "Coping with Peripheral Neuropathy: How to Handle Stress, Disability, Anxiety, Fatigue, Depression and Relationships", the set is invaluable to every neuropathy patient. These three books are a great resource for neuropathy patients who above all need knowledge and good information to find help with neuropathy at every level.LtCol Eugene B Richardson, USA Retired, CIDP patient due to Agent Orange exposure in Vietnam with 100% service conneted disability from the VA having lived wih neuropathy for over four decades.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing Book with little value
I was hoping for some real tips on how to treat my painful neuropathy, or tips that would reduce my discomfort, dietary advice, etc.Instead it's full of "embrace life" statements.I'm sure the author meant well but this book has no practical value for anyone who is determined to live a pain-free life.

2-0 out of 5 stars I decided not to buy this
I considered buying this until I reviewed a copy.I have peripheral neuropathy with no pain.Although the author did acknowledge that not all sufferers of this problem have pain, she then proceeded to discuss the problem from the point of view of pain; perhaps I am in a minority and, additionally, not very much can be said to those of us like me anyway. This book does reflect New Age thinking but may be useful to some readers. It doesn't have anything to offer me. ... Product Description
Peripheral neuropathies are diseases that affect the neuromuscular apparatus between the muscles or sensory receptors and connections in the spinal cord and the brain. They affect approximately 20-30% of children attending neuromuscular clinics. Uniquely, this text deals exclusively with such disorders in children and draws together the rapidly expanding but widely scattered knowledge in the field. It is a highly practical text, written by clinical neurologists with long experience in physiology, histopathology, and management of neuropathy. This new edition retains the basic structure of its successful predecessor and continues to offer many illustrations and real case histories. An extensive revision of the text has enabled it to encompass the major developments over the past seven years, including particularly recent advances in molecular biology and therapy of metabolic and inflammatory neuropathies. ...
