Book Description

Peripheral neuropathy, the variety of conditions that result when the nerves that connect to the brain and spinal cord are damaged or diseased, is commonly associated with diseases such as diabetes, HIV, alcoholism, and lupus. Although widespread — it affects 10–20 million people in the United States — information about the condition has been difficult to obtain. This essential guide explains what is known about peripheral neuropathy, including its causes and manifestations, and what can be done to manage it. Topics include drug therapy for the condition and its symptoms, interventional therapy, alternative medicines, caring for the feet, and much more. This book will enable patients to make informed decisions about their care.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
I bought this book for someone else who is suffering from diabetic neuropathy that is not responding well to treatment. This person said that the book is "excellent" and that it provided clear, comprehensive information that s/he wasn't able to find anywhere else (including internet sites). Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Neuropathy Understandable
Peripheral Neuropathy is a concise, inexpensive volume written in plain English. It will be useful to both neuropathy sufferers and their physicians alike.

Dr. Latov's expertise -- as a clinician, teacher, and a founder of The Neuropathy Association(www,neuropathy.org) -- is well-reflected in the text.

When both the doctor and the patient are able to discuss neuropathy knowledgeably as a result of reading this work, the disease will be better understood and managed

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!
My daughter has Peripheral Neuropathy which was caused from CHEMO following treatment for breast cancer. This book, "Numb Toes and Aching Soles," written by John Senneff, is the first book that she says, "tells it like it is."

The book gives accurate descriptions of the various levels and types of pain...from minor to excruciating pain...that can be experienced by the sufferers of Peripheral Neuropathy.

It also describes the various medicines that may help reduce, or completely stop the pain, including Opiate drugs, like Fentynl, Methadone, etc. He accurately points out that usually, only Specialized Pain Doctors are not afraid to dispense them.

(Note: One new medicine that came out after his book was published, is "Lyrica" which seems to help some PN sufferers find relief.)

It should be noted that John Senneff, copes with Peripheral Neuropathy himself, and knows what it is like to deal with it.He is not a doctor, but he himself was looking for answers, and did extensive research on the subject before publishing his book. The book is written in easy to understand language.

I HIGHLY RECCOMMEND THIS BOOK for anyone seeking helpful information about Peripheral Neuropathy...including those in the medical field who truly wish to help their patients find relief from this painful malady.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive study
This is a well written, easy to understand book. Senneff goes to great length to detail information on the subject of peripheral neuropathy. This book is very helpful for anyone looking to understand and seeking relief for this problem.

3-0 out of 5 stars Anodyne Therapy....GREAT for Neuropathy
I recently was diagnosed with Peripheral Neuropathy by my Podiatrist. He sent me to therapy for a new treatment called Anodyne Light Therapy.I have had 3 treatments and it seems to be helping.I think this is fairly new to Our disease.
You can check this out atwww.anodynetherapy.com for more information. There are no injections...NO pain...only Infared Light Therapy.CHECK THIS OUT.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I bought this book thinking I might learn something new.It is expensive for a paperback, but its 280-odd pages are in a very large typeface, so its cover leads you to expect more to read than there is.There are numerous anecdotes from people who had struggled with diagnosis of this disease - are doctors really so incompetent?Unfortunately, I did not find many of these to be helpful. The book covers quite a lot of treatment possibilities, many of which are not much use, or not available at present anyway.I did not learn anything new from the book, in spite of my hopes from reading other reviews.I had learned from excellent web sites (neuropathy-trust.org) and other books, and as a patient not afraid to ask questions of my doctors, nor intimidated by them, I found that the book did not give me any new knowledge. It is markedly unhelpful with practical solutions - shoes, socks, etc., that are important for day to day living.A big disappointment after the other rave reviews.

2-0 out of 5 stars Misleading title
Numb Toes. That's what I wanted to learn about. I Read the book, tons of information on Peripheral Neuropathy but very little about toe numbness. Index only lists numbness on page 17. There in one paragraph I found numbness mentioned twice. ... Read more

Book Description
Peripheral neuropathies are a large group of chronic illnesses that cause changes in your life far beyond simply damaging nerves. Sufferers often confront pain, weakness, depression, anxiety, fatigue and insomnia. In addition there are long term changes in roles and relationships.

Dr. Berman tackles these psychological and social issues in Coping with Peripheral Neuropathy from the viewpoint both of an experienced psychiatrist and of a fellow-sufferer with neuropathy. He details strategies to deal with changing roles at work and at home. He explores relationships and sexuality.

Dr. Berman lays the groundwork for learning to cope and improve your quality of life in the face of these chronic diseases. He draws on experience treating chronically physically ill patients including neuropathy patients, as well as his own experience of having a neuropathy for ten years. Book Description
Fully revised and updated, the Third Edition of this respected text continues to provide complete and current information on the sites, causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of focal lesions of the peripheral nervous system. Detailed coverage of individual nerves emphasizes normal anatomy, pathology, and diagnosis. While this edition retains the easy-access organizational framework of prior editions, many more clinical figures have been added to aid readers in improving diagnostic accuracy. Close attention is given to the latest imaging techniques, electrodiagnostic testing methods, and intraoperative electrophysiologic recordings. Early chapters review the gross anatomy and structure of peripheral nerves, the physiologic sequelae of various types of nerve damage, the abnormalities found in electrodiagnostic tests, and the work-up for patients with focal neuropathies. The remaining chapters address the courses and anatomical relations of various nerves, identify the types and sites of lesions, and discuss the investigation and management of specific focal neuropathies. ... This fine book is an excellent reference volume on peripheral nerve injuries. It is organized in an anatomically topical manner with chapters covering all major divisions of the peripheral nervous system. Each chapter reviews the anatomy of that division (eg, brachial plexus, median nerve, etc), the clinical phenomenology and pathology of characteristic nerve injuries, diagnosis, clinical electrophysiology, and management. It is written clearly and organized well with good illustrations. This book is my chosen reference when dealing with focal peripheral nerve problems.I haven't seen a competitor volume that is as comprehensive or as clear.Recommended as a component of the standard bookshelf of all neurologists.

I've been searching forever for a comprehensive book that didn't cost more than $30, but goes into detail, but is readable by a layperson.
