I am a case manager and this is an excellent book on this disorder.I will be able to use it when assessing clients. It's an excellent book for clients as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Book for Borderline Personality Disorder
I was diagnosed with Bi-Polar II and Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). This past September. Not only did I not understand this disease, but I didn't understand how or where I got it from. I think I have probably orderdered every book on Amazon relating to BPD. All of them seemed to be a blame game. Feeling sorry for the spouse and family and those close to the person with BPD. The books that tried to explain it to the borderline were useless, There wasn't a whole lot of explaining of what the disease really was and what to do about it. I was lucky, I had a mental and physical breakdown. They did a Neuropyscholical Evaluation on me and that is how scientifically, came to the conclusion and diagnosis of BPD. It's a very difficult disease to diagnose because there are often underlying other issues that go along with it, ADHD, Bi-Polar, Depression, Anxiety etc... This book was not a cry baby book. It gives straight medical facts and tells you how to get help and the right people to get it from. It also goes into genetic factors and medications used to help BPD. Since I have been on the right medication (which is a lot of mix and match to find the meds and dosage that is right for you). It can be frustrating, but don't give up! Your Psychologist will find the right meds after he diagnoses you properly. Thaerapy is also crucial. It teaches people how to function in a strange world that we don't understand. I recommend it to anyone close to you also, so they can get a better understanding about what our inside lonely world feels like. Good Luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Very good insight into a very complex and baffling disorder.Makes it easy for a non-psychologist to understanding the condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Aid in Understanding
This book was an excellent resource for me and my family when I was first diagnosed. It really described how I felt and it helped my friends and family understand a lot of why I do things the way I do them and that it really isn't all about me being a brat and manipulative, it's a disorder and the person with BPD suffers just as much as the family. However, I do feel that if you have internet access the info in here is only going to mirror that. But if you are a loved one is diagnosed and you don't want to spend hours searching for relevant information or you just want your family to understand it's a great guide!

Some books make time stop for a moment. This is one of those books.

Glowinski is sharp and cold in his insightful incision into bad relationships.

If you've ever had a relationship with a self-centred, narcissistic and arrogant lover, this book will be both liberating and breath-taking.

It will help you realize that some people exist for only one reason: to suck the life out of you.

5-0 out of 5 stars An important, forward-thinking, much welcome book
As someone diagnosed with BPD, I have done a lot of research on the condition, both online and by reading any book written on the subject. Many of those books (except for BPD Demystified)are extremely outdated, even if they're only a few years old. And many of them were disappointedly irresponsible, being quite negative and insisting that the prognosis was always dire and/or perpetuating the huge myth that those diagnosed with BPD are basically manipulative.

I say this because this book is different. It has the latest information on BPD, from what it is, how it may come about, what therapies are out there, if medication helps, and, quite important, speaks about new research on the brain and how this research shows actual physical differences in those with BPD. The book succeeds most in 2 particular ways: (1) In the way it is organized. Well-written chapters, clear headings and subheadings, easy for anyone and everyone to understand, and comprehensive summaries at chapter ends to note the main points. The books is also divided into Parts I and II, to make the focus and direction even clearer. For this alone, it is a book I would recommend to anyone interested in BPD, whether a professional, consumer, family member, friend, student, etc.

And furthermore, (2) The Survival Guide does not take one position and stubbornly adhere to it. It recognizes that there are many differences among those diagnosed with BPD, even as the similarities in how they "match" the criteria kinda puts us all in the same group. Of all the information out there, it presents the most "open" view, meaning that it is informative and hopeful and recognizes that this is a complex condition but that it is indeed treatable. And the authors cite many studies to back up their points. They don't pretend to have all the answers, but instead create an opening for real dialog and discussion.

I recommend this book wholeheartedly, without any reservation whatsoever. It will educate you, let you see the individuality of people diagnosed with BPD, and present you with the latest in therapy and in research, without prejudice. I am thankful for this book. It is honest and impartial. And perhaps above all else, that's what BPD literature presently needs the most. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Although not what I would call "easy reading" by any stretch of the imagination, this book was extremely detailed and broke down each DSM into smaller fragments. It was a great piece to add to my courses in MH DSM and went into much greater detail than my university textbooks! My professor at the time recommended a similar book which I managed to misplace.Fortunately this one was recommended to me and is even better.

Excellent in every regard and a must-have for any mental health practitioner.

5-0 out of 5 stars First class resource on the little understood world of PD.
Theodore Milon's work on personality disorder's is a tour de force of the little understood world of "personality disorders in modern life."

This is an outstanding book, both as a text for the advanced master's level student, or as a stand-alone reference for the clinician looking to delve deeper into this mysterious world.

Dr. Milon cogently and meticulously dissects each disorder and provides case vignettes to aid the reader in grasping each entity for what it is, if that is possible.

Highly recommended. Encyclopedic in scope. Scholarly in its depth. 5+ stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolutely wonderful book on personality.
As an "advanced layman" interested in personality, I can fully endorse all that has been said by others about this book. It's not often that you find a book intended as a textbook that's....hard to put down, but this book certainly qualifies.

One rather missleading aspect of the title is its' implication that the book is only about the more pathological aspects of personality, and although the book is indeed organized along the lines of the DSM defined personality disorders, Millon makes an ongoing point within every section that the severity of each of the disorders exists along a continum, ranging from "normal" to "extream".

Those within the "normal" range on each disorder illustrate aspects of personality that are common to almost every one of us, and as such, the book provides equally comprehensive insights into normal aspects of personality as well.

If you are truely interested in personality in it's full range of variation, I would not allow yourself to be detered by the books' price.Millon is a stunning intelect, and I believe you will come away from this quite readable volume with the same enthusiastic response as others who have reviewed it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Personality Textbook
For those looking for the perfect Masters level textbook on Personality this is the one.Throughout the entire book, the author frames the discussion from the various therapeutic perspective: cognitive, biologic, psychodynamic, interpersonal, and evolutionary-neurodevelopmental.They cover functional and structural domains and contrast each personality type with related personality structures. They also break each personality disorder and trait into variations.Their incorporation of personality trait with disorder would allow instructors of personality to incorporate the various testing within the personality disorder framework. The book is very weak on therapy strategies and techniques for each disorder, but that is not why one would want the book.A terrific textbook on personality disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars The encyclopedia of personality disorders
Authoritative, erudite, comprehensive and indispensable. It is by far the single best tome about personality disorders. It draws on the authors' rich clinical experience, panoramic acquaintance with schools of psychology, innovative taxonomy, and comparative ability. Though culturally-biased, it is still applicable to all societies and all times. Don't be deterred by the stiff price - it is worth every cent. 5-0 out of 5 stars From a patients view
As someone who is avoidant co morbid with OCPD spent perhaps 40 years depressed more than not before reaching out for any professional help I would like to say especially in the chapter on avoidants the book is pretty much dead on.The chapter on avoidants is the one I can most closely relate to but I see myself in others as well my OCDP us most apparent in hoarding issues a spot my therapist and I are having a hard time pushing me throughI've been working with a therapist for about a year and half now making progress even if it's slow.My therapist knows I am a person who likes to try and understand my disorders and reads as much material as I can.We have both learned a lot together she being my motivator and supporter. She has been outstanding doing her research to help develop plans of actions that have helped knock down some long standing self built walls. She likes to kid me that I could teach a graduate class in personality disorders with all the reading I have done.

To sum this up as a someone who has to deal with these issues as part of my daily life the book is right on with much of the way my thoughts/reactions are if I don't work actively to keep ahead of them to continue on my road to a happier life. And yes even as someone who came to therapy at a high functioning level in many aspects of my life I know at times I can be a frustrating client. But for me the knowledge that both my therapist and I are feeing increasing levels of frustration has been something I have been able to use to finally find the courage to knock down some long standing walls. So a special than you to those of you who choose to try and help those of us who present some special difficulties.

5-0 out of 5 stars came as ordered
The book came in a timely manner and arrived in new condition exactly as I ordered it. Very pleased.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
This is a great book. For example, the chapters on obsessive compulsive and passive agressive personality give some great direction for therapy.Knowing that an obsessive person fears making mistakes, that narcissism is part of obsessionality and that a passive agressive person fears loss of autonomy can really guide treatment well.

On the other hand, the treatment of narcissistic personality disorder is weak.It just concentrates on how the patient should learn that the world does not revolve around them.It ignores the shame, need for validation and driven quality that narcissistic patients have and is reflected in their cognitions. In other words, the case used to treat NPD is of the oblivious type and in practice it is more common to see the hypervigilant type of narcisit. As CBT becomes more psychodynamic, this issue will be better addressed, I anticipate.(The oblivious narcisists are more antisocial and the vigilant ones are more on the anxiou/dependant end of the spectrum - I forget who's classification this is).

5-0 out of 5 stars Very practical, directive strategy
Beck has done a great job describing a very pragmatic, common sense cognitive-behavioral methodology for the treatment of challenging personalities. The research he has done builds confidence in practitioners interested in and using these methods. Each personality style is well-described, and several strategies are provided for addressing these problematic dispositions. The book is very well-organized and easy to read. Assignments and case examples further add to the utility of this text.

5-0 out of 5 stars All Hail Aaron Beck!
I love Aaron Beck, the founder of cognitive therapy. I think he has great insight into the various personality disorders. This book is incredibly helpful. It includes all of the disorders, their way of thinking, they co-morbidity, their treatment, case studies, and more. 5-0 out of 5 stars From a Borderline to the world
I absolutely loved this book. It was something I read about halfway into my transformation. I read reviews and my mom read a bunch of books, but some were too technical and BORING for me to get into and in true borderline style I quit reading with out even getting halfway through them; but this one kept me interested. And now after more then a year of what will be life long treatment I am happy to report I have not been suicidal in over a year, I have not wanted to hurt myself in over a year and I have been in a stable marriage for over a year. (Can you guess my transformation started over a year ago :D )

This book really showed me that there was hope for people like me, and that I needed to keep working hard and that it would get easier and it has gotten easier to cope, easier to live my life. But most importantly it showed me that even if these "people" weren't real people someone out there had enough knowledge of what goes on inside my head to write a book about it, and that is truely helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great insight for yourself or someone you love
I ordered this book to see if I found that the descriptions here suited me better than bipolar disorder. The stories could be my own life read back to me. I was happy to find the insights that this book provides for those of us who struggle with BPD and those of us who are dealing with someone with BPD. Great book. Highly recommended

3-0 out of 5 stars my thoughts in brief
I've done plenty of DPB reading, and this is useful in some ways.It is pretty comprehensive. This book tries to offer information to soothe the borderline and those in contact with him/her.As a borderline, I felt even guiltier than usual reading about the negative effects of my illness on my loved ones, which was unnesessary. Not good.On the other hand, it is one of the few BPD books I've found on the subject that briefly outlines other, often concurrent, illnesses, which was helpful. If you're a dedicated student of the illness and feel the need to read everything available on the topic, read the whole thing. If you've done your research already, you'll find it somewhat redundant. If you're new to it, you can get everything you need without the clinically technical chapters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Right on the BDP!
Well written.I had no idea the extent of this personality disorder and how to handle living around them. The author's use of examples provides a more hands on approach and ability for the reader to relate. Easy reading is always best when trying to understand a very difficult, complex and yet simple personality and the author did an excellent job articulating in a lay persons terms.

Thank you and keep on writing.

1-0 out of 5 stars unprofessional inmy opinion
the author in my opinion has never clinically interviewed, met, or examined Princess Diana while she was alive. To use her life episodes as though he is qualified to diagnose a person he has never met, is unprofessional and salacious in the extreme. As I understand it, it is not considered ethical in the helping professions to diagnose people one has not examined personally and at depth. I would recommend Walking on Eggshells, The Borderline Mother, and other serious books on borderline personality disorder that do not play fast and loose, but give real case studies that the author has absolute firsthand knowledge about.

BPD is too paintful a fact and too serious a subject to spend time reading a book that misappropriates the life of a dead woman who cannot answer the author's charges about her psychological states. If you live with a person who suffers from BPD or think you might suffer from BPD yourself, read a book that teaches coping skills and gives real cases in all their variations, and see a good shrink in person too. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars DBT Group made easy
This manual is fantastic! Not only does it provide succinct guidelines on how to teach the core Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) skills, but it stands alone quite well too.The additional text (Cognitive Behavioral Treatment of Borderline Peronality Disorder), Linehan wroteexplains Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) in detail, and provides detailed discriptions of each skill, is excellent for the professional; however, for those who are suffering from BPD, and those just beginning to understand DBT, this manual provides invaluable information. Each skill is presented and exercises are provided, including group discussion hints. With minor modification this manual can be used successfully with adolescent women and men.The manual makes group preparation so much easier, and by conducting group in a didactic manner the skills are easily taught and learned.I highly recommend it for anyone touched by BPD.

5-0 out of 5 stars DBT vital for self
This book gave me tools to understand myself better and how to approach problems, get my needs met, and to understand that life isn't always fair and people aren't always going to do what you want. You can express yourself in an assertive manner and feel ok even if another person doesn't do what you wanted or needed. To be ok in yourself, your journey and process. How to "get out of the mind" and thinking about negative thoughts and tools to cope with very serious pain both emotionally and physically.

I think if most people studied DBT, the world would be at a better place. There would be more compassion, understanding, and most of all better communication as well as coping skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for those involved with a BPD child
Finding any valid information on BPD in adolescents is close to impossible. We have a 15-yo daughter in a therapeutic boarding school after trying every outpatient treatment available. While our daughter has not engaged in any serious external behaviors, she has lived the last years in a constant state of dysphoria and wild attention-seeking schemes. She's was diagnosed with bi-polar w/psychosis when she was 12 and has since been diagnosed w/BPD as well.Dr. Aguierre's experience in treating adolescents w/BPD provides not only a valid perspective, it also gives very practical advise. This is a must read book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good CBT approach.
As a child psychologist, I get very tired of the neo-Freudian mumbo-jumbo that is often associated with this diagnosis. Not only is such an approach not not very effective, but you have to buy all sorts of (ahem) crapola to even start in on it.

This book is a real relief. When I got it I assumed it was just more Freudian malarky, but it isn't. Very CBT and DBT oriented, at least in practice, and I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This $12 book did more than $18K spent in treatment!
First, I am NOT advising anyone to replace any treatment with this book.

I'd simply like to guide parents who, like us, may have been chasing their tails in search of a proper diagnosis and treatment for your teen to this new source of help and hope. Unlike many mental health care professionals, Dr. Aguirre truly attempts to understand the BPD teen and their families, rather than label and medicate.

Last year we spent over 18K on treatment for depression, bipolar and/or PTSD, all the while knowing BPD was her afflication (family history). Only to have our asthmatic honor student move in with the boyfriend, drop out of school, start smoking and get 3 tatoos - last month.

Reading this book has changed our lives in a matter of days. Dr. Aguirre really 'gets it'
and once I was able to speak that understanding truth with my BPD teen - she lit up! She is impressed with his knowledge ofBPD depression sometimes not being anything like classical depression. She says her lows are due to feelings of shame and guilt, "I never have a I can't get outta bed sadness." She also agreed that while she is able to pass advanced English courses and write beautiful stories, she lacks the ability to express her feelings. It felt so good to she her finally feel understood.

I know that we still have a long way to go and lots more work to do but this book gave me hope that we are finally headed in the right direction.

Thanks Dr. Aguirre!!!

Book Description
Chances are that every therapist in private practice will, at some point in his or her career, encounter a client with borderline personality disorder (BPD). It is very hard to help people with BPD, especially within the limited scope of treatment allowed by most managed care programs. But the severity of BPD, in particular the tendency of people with BPD to engage in suicidal and self-destructive behaviors, makes it critical that therapists have every chance for successful intervention. By blending the most effective treatment techniques available for BPD into a clear and systematic protocol, this book gives therapists the best chance available for achieving lasting change in brief therapy. Skills for regulation of out-of-control emotions, including some from the much acclaimed dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), make up the core of the program. The book also benefits from the psychopharmacological expertise of its author, John Preston, whose Handbook of Clinical Psychopharmacology for Therapists is the essential resource for therapists about psychoactive medication. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Confusion Nicely Demystified
Having read his previous work, I'm not surpised that Preston could distill a massive amount of scholarship and personal experience with the most arguable of diagnoses into a hundred sixty-five pages one can actually read and understand -without- a doctorate degree. He has de-mystified Borderline to the point one can grasp it -- and actually -do- something about it -- in a single tome.

That said, I'd like to respectfully submit that he start work on a second edition. Preston missed a few gems here and there that might make the next edition of Integrative Treatment... even -more- effective. As an example, Glen Gabbard's almost throw-away ideas (in -Management of Countertransference wth Borderline Patients-, 1994) about containing reactions and digesting emotions hit me square in the nose one day. To them, I added detoxifying neurochemistry, considering the facts and responding appropriately. (I refer to this "CDDCR" list because it's an easier memonic for me to grasp than Linnehan's "steps for adaptive problem solving" quoted by Preston.)

Likewise, he might stir in some of Fritz and Laura Perls' techniques for indentifying, owning and -processing- emotions. Have you ever met a borderline who -didn't- need a course in affect management? That Borderline is hugely co-morbid with bipolar is self-evident to most who work with such patients.

Regardless, I expect I'll (selectively) recommend this book to some of them (and/or their family members, as well). But I'll do so -carefully-. The term "borderline" is still a perjorative in the world, including the acute wards and community mental health clinics in my area. But Preston's work here has helped me to be able to explain it to people in a way that defuses the worst of the "sharp stick in the eye" syndrome.

This is a very useful text for any mental health professional at any level, and all the more so because it is as accessible to front-line floor techs and SAP counselors as it will likely be for struggling MFT and LCSW interns. The Psy.D., Ph.D. or MD who sniffs at it as "beneath me" will do themselves a decided disservice. If this book fails to become a mandate for MA- and MS-level students, it'll be a real shame.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Whole Enchilada
Dr. Bockian leaves nothing out of this very useful aid to BPD. Starting with a penetrating description of BPD, the book then provides information on diagnosis, various therapies and treatments and how and where to find help. It offers plenty of information which can bring hope and understanding for people who must deal with BPD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very concise...wonderful!
I have read other books on Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), but I think that this is the best one yet!

Some mainstream books on this disorder are too technical to be understood by the lay person. Even though I am a mental health professional, the book was really concise and also quite entertaining! This book is also a good reference guide, and provides a wonderful summary for people who are new to learning about this disorder.

So, if you think you have BPD or know someone who has it, I highly recommend this book. Worth every penny!

4-0 out of 5 stars Important Information
As I was searching for a book on BPD, I found it astonishingly difficult to understand the books nature without actually buying it and reading it, which makes the whole "searching and inquiring previously to purchase" almost impossible.

So I decided to give a quick explanation on this book, in addition to a review, so that other people might find the information useful...

"New Hope for people with BPD" is not a self help book; it is a self-help suggestion book. Meaning, the book begins, as does every other BPD book, with describing the disorder, explaining the DSM criteria and giving useful information about the condition. After that, the author proceeds to vastly describing treatment methods found in the USA today.

Throughout the book he covers many different kinds of therapeutic approaches quite objectively, leaving the reader with a ton of useful info and a bigger chance to make an educated decision on the therapeutic approach that is right for him/her. If up until now you had to go to a therapist and raise the question of "how are you planning to treat me?" without knowing anything about other ways, now you can read this book and decide beforehand on the way you see fittest for yourself.

The author includes various alternative approaches, such as alternative medicine, self help and nutritional options, but he does not give direct instruction on how to actually treat the disease, only information about options out there.

It is true that the author does concentrate mainly on the extreme symptoms of BPD, rather than the root of the problem, but then again, he is not presuming to solve the problem, but to help us find a way to solve it ourselves with the help of therapy.

I found this book to be extremely helpful and informational, non-presumptuous, and intelligent, and there's nothing I love more than an author who trusts the readers ability to understand "smart-stuff"...

I recommend this book as your first BPD book, but make sure you modify your expectations - if you can't afford therapy or do not want to go to therapy, this might not be the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most useful book out there on BPD !!
This book has changed my life...I am able to deal with people in my life who have this disorder FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER....It is very clear and filled with user-friendly, sensitive, competent advice from people who clearly care and who clearly know what it takes for a person with BPD to survive and even thrive in spite of such a burdensome life...It truly is well named....NEW HOPE...It's really the first hope I have ever had for myself and my family members...Thank you Dr. Bockian (Valerie and Nora too) for being so good at what you do !!Reading this book is like talking first-hand to therapists WHO GET IT !!

Book Description
Praise for the first edition. . .

"This book should be read by everyone who wishes to reclaim the lost land of personality theory and personality disorders (it's so good that I was tempted to say read by anyone who has a personality). This book can be applauded as a companion volume to DSM-III. . . Then, too, it can be appreciated for its thorough and scholarly style." —Journal of Personality Assessment

". . .an impressive effort to bring together the clinical literature on personality disorders . . .

A very useful book. . . —Bulletin of the Menninger Clinic

". . .an important source for clinicians and researchers seeking a more comprehensive understanding of these major clinical entities . . . Exhaustively documented and yet written and presented in a clear and simple way, this work is among the most thorough and up-to-date texts in the field and will be particularly valuable for students being introduced to psychiatric diagnosis." —Library Journal

". . .an excellent descriptive book . . .its strength lies in the reality of its case-work material. A book for practitioners. . . —British Journal of Psychiatry

"Dr. Millon's book is scholarly, comprehensive, well organized, and gracefully written. . . .Millon is equally adept at critically and encyclopedically summarizing the psychoanalytic, constitutional, temperamental, behavioral, phenomenologic, interpersonal, and social learning theories of personality development and disorder. . . .This is by far the best available text on personality disorders and will be of great interest to clinicians and researchers alike." —American Journal of Psychiatry

"The book contains a great deal of information on topics about which DSM-III is either carefully guarded or silent. It can be appreciated as representing the point of view of one highly respected dean of personality and psychopathology. . . .one joins Millon in a serious consideration of how each personality disorder developed, what it is like intraphysically and psychodynamically, the manifold ways in which it can express itself, all the complicated other disorders with which it may combine, and the richness of prognostic possibilities." —Contemporary Psychology

Disorders of Personality: DSM-IVTM and Beyond is the fully revised Second Edition of Theodore Millon's landmark work on personality disorders. Indeed, Dr. Millon has been universally recognized as a pioneer and leading authority in this rapidly evolving field. As one of the founders of the Journal of Personality Disorders, a prime organizer of the International Society for the Study of Personality Disorders, and a full member of the DSM-IVTM, Axis II Work Group, he has played a dominant role in shaping the character of this extraordinarily challenging area of psychological study.

In this new edition, practitioners, researchers, teachers, and students will find the same clarity of insight that made the previous edition the standard text on personality disorders. Like its predecessor, the Second Edition guides the reader through the special complexities of this group of disorders and aids clinicians in the difficult work of diagnosis. It serves as an indispensable companion volume to DSM-IVTM, especially in the light of advances that have transformed personality disorders from an area of marginal relevance in diagnostic practice to one that is now central to the comprehensive multiaxial format. Major revisions and an almost doubling in length make this book more valuable than ever before:

  • A revised theoretical framework—from a learning theory-biosocial framework to a more evolutionary model that includes constructs applicable to phylogenesis and human adaptive styles
  • An expansion of the 15 basic personality prototypes into personality disorder subcategories, resulting in over 60 additional adult subtypes
  • An enlarged review of historical and contemporary thinking on personality disorders that makes this an invaluable single sourcebook for evaluating various theories
  • A substantial expansion of the "Clinical Picture" section of each chapter now incorporates eight realms of patient data, and therefore facilitates the selection of modalities of therapeutic intervention

Comprehensive reviews of the newer personality prototypes, such as avoidant, narcissistic, borderline, schizotypal, depressive, sadistic, and masochistic

  • Detailed discussion of frequent Comor-bid Axis I and Axis II diagnoses—a feature especially useful to those in managed care practices
  • An instructive discussion of childhood personality disorders, a subject frequently ignored in the literature
  • Major new chapters on personality assessment and personality therapy, including an up-to-date review of available instruments
  • Expanded and detailed discussion of short-term, focused therapy

Comprehensive, authoritative, and superbly organized, Disorders of Personality: DSM-IVTM and Beyond is an absolutely essential resource for psychiatrists, clinical psychologists and social workers, teachers, students, researchers, and all others who seek greater understanding of the complex web of human personality disorders. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
The book is great, and a "must have" for those who seek a better understanding of personality and its disorders.
The authors not only provide the reader with the know-how, but also an enthralling overview of the history of each personality disorder. By going back to some of the old case studies, the authors did allow me to notice how personality disorders have evolved in the centuries. However, I have also learned that many of the signs of each cluster of PPDD were already described in ancient history.
Apart these cultural connotations, the book is a very helpful hint for those working with patients suffering from obstinate
and "hard-to-treat" personality disorders.
Great book, worth each penny paid.

5-0 out of 5 stars One man's personality disorder . . .
. . . is another man's path to riches, professional prestige, and social control.

If you want to know about the latest fads and superstitions in America's favorite quackery, then this is a great source. You'll miss out on a few things, such as how psychiatrists had epileptics imprisoned in "colonies" just a few decades ago. Epilepsy was, we were informed by Harvard psychiatrists, proof of pathological criminality. You will also not read about how homosexuals, after long being persecuted by psychiatrists (electroconvulsive therapy, insulin schock, lobotomy, etc.) were suddenly declared well, and about how people who dislike homosexuals then were afflicted with a "mental illness" called "homophobia." You won't learn how it is that psychiatrists "knew" that people contracted peptic ulcers because they could't handle stress until the bacteria was isolated that actually causes such ulcers. You won't learn this because psychiatrists don't like to get hemmed in by history, or science, or ethical considerations. The authors discretely ignore the fact that no autopsy has ever revealed a person to have had "schizophrenia" or that any disease revealed to have a genuine organic cause is removed from psychiatry and given to physicians, such as neurologists, who deal with real illnesses.

But do not fret. This book is directly in the psychiatric mainstream. It presents all the categories, classifications, modalities, complexes, and "treatments" just as if they were the product of actual science. It's as complex and convincing as an elaboration on astrology or phrenology. Like any good pseudoscientific tract, it is so splendidly dense and pretentious that it will not lack for credulous readers.

Yesterday's forgotten "cause" and "treatment" for "schizophrenia" is replaced by the hottest new thing. Every coercive treatment applied to involuntary subjects who don't accept that they are in any way "sick" is deftly rationalized. A century from now this will stand as one of the most fascinating compendia of quackery American has produced.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on personality disorders on the market !!!
There are few books in psychology that are as comprehensive in scope and detail as Dr. Millon's book. The book provides a solid, integrative theory of personality and personality disorders that can be used not only in research, but also clinical practice by psychologists from any theoretical orientation. Because it is so comprehensive, the book is especially useful for students. The first section of the book (approximately 200 pgs.) is dedicated to laying down a foundation for the study of personality disorders -- the issues that it entails and a concise (yet, detailed) review of various personality theories.Dr. Millon then presents a rational, integrated theory of personality that is the foundation of his integrated biopsychosocial approach to personality. The rest of the book is dedicated to a detailed examination of the DSM-IV personality disorders. This single book can serve as a primary text for any advanced course in personality. Whether one aggrees with Dr. Millon's theory (and few can disagree with it completely once they understand it's comprehensive and integrated nature), this book is one that anybody who deals with the personality disorders MUST have on their bookshelf. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, depending on what you're looking for
I'm the significant other of a newly diagnosed multiple. And I'm hungry for information and understanding.

This book has helped me immensely in getting an idea of the subjective experience of having Dissociative Identity Disorder (or Multiple Personality Disorder), which has been valuable in understanding what my partner is dealing with.

However, it won't answer many practical questions about what MPD is, or how it's treated, or what to expect as therapy progresses.

The book is a collection of short passages written by people with DID, all organized loosely by subject. It's generally easy to read and understand, but as you might expect, some passages are very well written and very infomative and others are not so fluent. And, as at least one reviewer here mentioned, there's a great deal of poetry, which I mostly skipped over.

I cannot speak about what a newly diagnosed DID might take from this book, but I imagine it could be very reassuring in the early stages. But as a previous reviewer points out, there seem to be more passages about the very real pain and confusion of DID, and not so many about successful healing. That said, though, the book I think is realistically hopeful about treatment.

But I think this lack of focus on successful healing is a result of it being a compilation of passages written by people in the middle of the struggle, and not necessarily by people who've largely managed to complete the struggle. So readers might want to keep that in mind.

As the partner of a DID, reading this book helps me understand what's going on inside my partner's head. It has helped ease my mind somewhat, and it's pointed out aspects of her experience I wouldn't have known about otherwise. Every time I read from the book it makes want to hug her and protect her, and give her more of the love she needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Encouraging empathy and understanding
This book was beneficial in assisting me with better understanding the experiences my clients live through with Dissociative Identity Disorder. Although not compiled specifically for clinicians, I found it gave me insight that I wouldn't have gotten in an academic piece.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who lives with DID, for their family and friends, and for Therapists and Case Managers who work with people diagnosed with DID (MPD). The book encourages empathy with, and greater understanding into, people living with this special coping strategy.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Important Book ... Once and for always
This is a collection of writing from 132 individuals, most of whom are multiples. Cohen (an art therapist) combined efforts with Lynn (editor/publisher of Many Voices), an Giller (director of The Sidran Foundation). Four questions were asked in a survey to subscribers of Lyn's work. The reoccurring themes were trust, control, and boundary-setting. They write that the book's audience "... may find here the wisdom of a collective voice, and structures upon which to build alliances."

This book was an important book at the time it was published and has remained so over the years. It was one of the first of its kind. At the time, Many Voices had 2,300 subscribers. There was a need for people to "come together." The questions asked of the multiples in 1990 were, "What do you wish you had known about MPD when you were first diagnosed? What would you like therapists to know about the experience of MPD? and, What do you think spouses, friends, and/or supportive family members should know about MPD?" Then, the significant others were asked to share their thoughts.

I remember how important this book was to me at the time. I had been diagnosed with MPD in January of 1990, and we had found this copy in 1992. I felt relief at hearing from a variety of multiples who were facing the same kind of experiences we were having. Some of my feelings were the same as them, some different. It was ok to feel about it as you may. I didn't realize at the time that there were other multiples that would try and maybe never find the right therapist, or that the therapy I was receiving was somewhat unique and very good. My therapist was very stable and practiced in his field and open minded.

4-0 out of 5 stars AN INSIDE & SOMETIMES BORING VIEW
I gor this book because I am a multiple and I wanted to know other people's experience so I wouldn't feel so isolated. Several friends had read it and recommended it to me.

I did find a few excerpt from the text very helpful in understanding other people's view of this condition. However, as a multiple, I found the book boring and stale. Same things over and over. This book may be great for someone recently diagnosed or for a singleton wanting to understand, but it's not the best choice and it certainly is not that good of a choice if you're well into your understanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone
When I read this book, it was like a lightning from the
clear skies. It explained so many things about myself,
others, and consciousness in general. Also, it told me
so much about how much abuse there is in the world, and
how much prejudice there is against people who are different
from some narrowly accepted norms. If one reads this book
with the heart, it can teach so incredibly much about love
and compassion which are so lacking in our world. I recommend
this book to anyone, whether MPD or not MPD. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Working with patients with borderline personality disorder
Linehan has written an easy-to-read, well organized book on working with BPD; her methods are empirically based. In one review a criticism was expressed re: her use of the female pronoun throughout the book. This didn't distract me from reading and learning; it seemed a commonsense choice on Linehan's part because, as she points out, the majority of individuals with BPD are women. The accompanying workbook is worth purchasing, also.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE Book
As a Borderline reading a book written for the clinician, it opened my eyes as to how others see me. It has helped me to see the areas in my mind that CAN be changed and has helped me to begin making those changes.
It is written by a 'non-writer' and is very difficult to read at times without a psych. manual ;)!! lots of $1000.00 words that are not for the layman, but if you want to know more about 'The Borderline', it will help you to learn who and what they are, and how and why they they think the way they do. For those angels among us,it teaches the greatest program on how to help us to change.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Godsend
I've just started reading the book and have skimmed the workbook. She is, as one reviewer stated, very compassionate.I myself am a borderline individual, recently discovering it as of last week from a caring boyfriend.I went to the library and checked this book out.Never have I been blown away by how this bookdescribes my feelings and pains so accurately.I never, for all these years, understood what was wrong with me, assuming it was everyone else.Ms. Linehan has definately helped my outlook on life.I'm very grateful for this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars better outcomes...less burnout!
As a relatively new therapist in a community mental health setting I noticed I kept getting clients that were diagnosed with BPD.No one else seemed to want them and as the new therapist I got "stuck" with them. After many months of frustration and questioning whether or not I made the right career choice, I stumbled across DBT.

My clients are doing much better and I feel much better after reading Linehan's works and attending behavioraltech.com's conferences for training.Case Managers, Psychiatrists, and Therapists are now working together as a team and splitting is not much of an issue anymore.

The techniques are wonderful and I feel so inspired; however, the text is a little dry and I had to give myself little rewards after each chapter to get through this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Innovative protocol
Marsha Linehan's treatment approach to Borderline Personality Disorder is innovative and refreshing.DBT does work! This book explains BPD, it's history, and the development and theory behind several practices and how Linehan, through her own practical experience, came to treat BPD with her effective approach. The text is very clinical, but readable. It is a great, in-depth compliment to the skills manual by Linehan.A must for any clinician who has thrown up his/her arms in frustration while working with a Borderline client! ...
