Social phobia is commonly regarded as a kind of disease caused by a deficient inner mechanism, but it may also be considered as a purposeful interpersonal pattern of self-protection from social threats.Though a critical assessment of several theoretical perspectives, this book attempts to clarify social phobia by critically discussing four questions: what is social phobia, what causes it, what is its nature and what kinds of treatments can improve. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great study review for small group at church
this is a great study for 6 weeks for any small group or sunday school class.Lessons are very on target and the devotions on each day between the lessons are wonderful and thought provoking. Our group has really enjoyed the study.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is NOT the Book.It is the study guide.
This is not the book.It is the group study guide for the book. Just FYI.Nothing in the description tells you that.I thought it was just the paperback version of the book until it arrived. The rating I gave it has nothing to do with the content. It has to do with the mis-representation from Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for a small group study.
My study group discussed this book and it was very enlightening and comforting. Everyone fears something and this book covers most common fears such as loneliness and failure. It is reassuring to understand God's perspective and how He cares for us during suchtimes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Another lousy Christian self-help book...
My entire church was forced to read this book last fall as part of its teaching series. In a church of 1000+ people, I have not found one person who liked the book.

The author makes it seem as if we are all cripped by some common phobias and that we are paralyzed by fear. While some of his premises are fine, most of them are just generalizations and pure grabbing at straws.

Maybe this has some applicability for those who live in the Bible belt and who aren't too worldly, but for those of us who have been around the block, it's just another feeble Christian self-help book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Comforting Read!
I don't know why this book hasn't received more attention given the events of recent times. With familiarity and humor, Ed Young has a unique way of bringing us back to the basics of faith in times of fear and crisis. We have been sitting on the edge of our seats since 9/11, wondering what will happen next. And this book puts our fears in perspective and helps us see that, no matter what happens, God is still in control. An incredible help in uncertain times. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very generalized
I bought this book to help deal with my 6 year old's nightmares. There wasn't really anything about that in the book.I thought the name implied the book would mostly be about bedtime fears but really it is a generalized book about 30 or so fears a child may have so it really didn't help me at all. There doesn't seem to be depth of analysis of any of the fears and I can't imagine the book would be useful to many people.
I don't necessarily think this is a "bad book", I just didn't find it helpful for me and don't see it really being helpful to most people, but if you just want a book with a little bit about a lot of fears, this would be a very good book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Really Helped!
This book was a great help. The ideas are practical and easy to understand and follow. The author is sympathetic to both parents and children. He doesn't place blame, just tells how to get over the problem.Separating different fears into their own chapters made it especially easy to find what I was looking for. ... Exellent. Give a very good synthesis on the issue, especially the different methods of treatment (but not the pharmacological ones). A chapter on psychotherapy, often forgotten. The quality of this book isperharps due to the fact that the writer is not médical (very serious butnot too technical) and a low grade social phobic. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Refresher
I bought this book years ago and promptly put it on a shelf and forgot about it. I finally picked it up in early August and started working with it over the summer break. In less than one month I had refreshed my math skills to the point that I am confident that I can tackle any day-to-day math problems that I may encounter.

Great as a reference or as a primer for going back to school. Better to try it out with a book first than to jump right into formal math classes!

2-0 out of 5 stars Manipulation Madness, the Sequel
The author must remember that the readers who are buying this book are, most likely, not the brightest among the human race. And, even if we are, it still takes some time and practice to master basic fundamentals.

The author races through the chapters too quickly. Not enough review questions, and not enough basic explanations. He depends on the rules to summarize the chapters for brevity. Faulty assumption.

Nevertheless, and subjectively speaking, I gathered a confident 'head of steam' of mathematics well into the book. I felt competent mastering numbers, fractions, decimals, and basic conversions. Then, I slammed into Chapter 13, when the author explains basic algebra and introduces Mr. X (isolating x into equations).Sadly, all my thought processes shut down and math phobia took charge.

Between Chapters 13 - 18, I encountered problems which I classified as Section 2. The author failed to discuss and illustrate pivotal points over fundamental mathematics. The rules are not enough to fully comprehend the long-handed process. One example 2x + x. This is one such example, not covered in the book, where the author needs to take a slight detour and explain how to interpret this. Also, there are additional methods for solving algebraic equations, and some of them are easier to (re)learn. The author needs to take a moment to discuss them. I found that using the easier methods (found in other books), and the long-handed method, gave me additional practice and clarity of concepts. Add the easier methods and include more word problems to solve.

The author should break the chapters down into three sections. At the end of each section, present additional problems that cover the material in that section with clear illustrations presented in the answers. This is not the time to skip steps. Do not assume that the student has it already mastered.

I must refer serious students to another couple books sold by Amazon, which are absolutely EXCELLENT! Quick Arithmetic, new 3rd ed. by Robert A. Carman, and Practical Algebra by Peter Selby.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!
This book got me past my fear of math so well that I decided to go back to college & finish a long-delayed bachelor's degree.Designed for adults, the book gradually takes the reader from phobia to ability. Many examples and lots of interesting explanations, plus end-of-chapter exercises with answers. My only complaint: more illustrations would be nice. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book has been a saving grave for me!
I have been dealing with anxiety since 2002, and Panic attacks for the last two years. Since I've been ready this book it has help me in so many ways! For people that are dealing with Anxiety, Panic Attacks, and Phobias I would get this book and fast. Thanks to Jerilyn Ross!

5-0 out of 5 stars A real winner - solid information, with practical, inspirati
Having suffered from panic disorder and phobias on and off for about 15 years,I have seen lots of therapists and read lots of books, none of which touched me like Triumph Over Fear. The author, Jerilyn Ross, is the first person I've encountered who combines both the knowledge of someone who has successfully worked with patients for over 20 years with the empathy and compassion of someone who has been there herself. As I read through Jerilyn's personal story and the various case studies of patients whom she has treated I realized that in spite of what well meaning therapists or authors can teach me about panic attacks, only someone who has experienced the irrational, seemingly out-of control spiralling of an attack can give me the assurance and confidence I needed to move forward. In addition, the self-help portion of the book gave me specific, practical things to work on by myself and with my therapist - which ultimately lead me to making wonderful personal progress. I highly recommend this book to anyone suffering from panic attacks as well as to family members trying to understand their loved ones' condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easiest to relate to book on fear
I've been dealing with an anxiety problem for about 10 years now, only I have been doing it the wrong way with countless drugs given to me by my doctor. There comes a crossroads when you just can't do it like that anymore.I spent the past 3 years getting off the drugs that have done more harm than good and am now learning what I should have learned in the beginning.I have read a ton of books on this disorder and to be honest, some of them you feel the need to have a dictionary beside you they are so complex. The writers forget they are writing the book for people who are not familiar with medical terminology in their everyday lives.Triumph Over Fear is different from the rest in many ways.First, it is easy to understand for just about anyone and is clearly written. Most importantly, it isn't written by someone who has merely studied the problem but has never actually felt what it's like to go through it.It makes no difference how many medical books you have read, how many people you have met, how many letters you have added to the end of your professional name. Unless you've been through this problem you really cannot fully understand it.This author has and that makes her words that much more powerful. This book should be in everyone's home whether you are suffering currently with anxiety or deal with someone you are trying to help but just can't seem to understand why they feel the way they do.Don't wait as long as I did, your life is waiting but the freedom is in you.

In addition to this book, I recommend "Don't panic"-R. Reid Wilson/ and also "the anxiety and phobia workbook"those are more technical and extremely complete in every detail.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written and informative
This is a good book. It was referred to me by my psychiatrist for OCD. Although it did not address my issues and help me much with my needs, it did make me realize that my problems compare little to some of the issues and difficulties other people have! I liked the book very much and found it very encouraging and informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Covers all the bases
Having "been there, done that" (anxiety), I've read a lot of books about the subject and I can highly recommend Triumph Over Fear. It's an inspiring, motivating book that covers all the bases.

I'd been a professional speaker for many years, traveling throughout the country giving presentations and teaching classes, then I was in a car accident and became agoraphobic. I told myself that I'd give myself all the time that I needed to heal; I'd concentrate on my writing and not travel for a while. Giving myself time to heal was a great start--I had another book published during those years (and even had a "brush" with an Oprah producer who pitched the idea of having me on the show)--but it had become easier and easier to stay home. I needed to do more. I had to "work" the ideas in Jerilyn's book so I could get back in my car and drive to the mall and go to the movies and, finally, travel again.

Jerilyn shares her own experience with having had anxiety and having recovered from it, then addresses the various anxiety disorders-agoraphobia, obsessive-compulsive, panic, post-traumatic stress, social phobia, and generalized anxiety-and gives case studies that illustrate each of them. She also discusses treatment options and shares good solid expertise, common sense, and proven exercises.

Being a writer myself, I loved her suggestion to keep a diary. I also liked the idea of labeling the anxiety and paying careful attention to the thoughts and behaviors that trigger it. I worked the program myself rather than with a therapist, although I did attend a peer support group for a while. And yes, it was a challenge to drive to those meetings, but they were so helpful and necessary! At one time my anxiety had become so pervasive that I found myself wondering who I'd be without it. Jerilyn even addresses that issue in the chapter, "Becoming Acquainted with the New You."

Today I'm feeling better than I have in years. Read Triumph Over Fear for a clearer understanding of anxiety and for the proven, practical guidelines for getting on with your life. - Kathleen Hawkins, president of winningspirit.com and author of Spirit Incorporated: How to Follow Your Spiritual Path from 9 to 5 ... Product Description

Rae is beyond socially awkward.

Since she was a little girl, Rae Swiggett knew something was different about her. The sound of planes flying overhead could spark a panic attack. Being called on in class was enough to push her over the edge. She feared the unknown, life, death, people . . . even fear itself.

By the time she reached ninth grade, Rae was muddling through life in relative silence, convinced everyone was mocking her, judging her, picking her apart, bit by little bit. Rae knew she couldn't keep going on this way. She knew something had to give.

'It's a game of catch-22 I constantly play with myself. If I keep acting normal, I hope one day I will be, but every time I try, I just let myself down. I'm so entirely sick of this game.'

5-0 out of 5 stars A book everyone should read!
Rae is a book that I hold really close to my heart. Not just because I adore Chelsea, but because I also suffered with severe anxiety in high school. The things that I always thought were just me, routines and antics that made me feel like the only person in the world with this problem, are put into far better words than I could ever come up with in Rae.

This isn't really a story; it's more of a detailed explanation of her day-to-day life and how she handled living with her anxiety, but it still managed to capture me and keep me turning page after page. Chelsea is a phenomenal writer. She can go from writing a heart-wrenching description of her emotions to being quirky and sarcastic, but it works.

I think this is a book that everyone should read, along with the other HCI Teen books. I can't even count all the times I've been told that I'm being ridiculous or stupid because of the limitations that my anxiety has put on my life. It's an incredibly tough thing to explain and I applaud Chelsea for being able to summarize just how difficult and mentally painful Anxiety can be. I want to buy a copy of this book and give it to anybody who has ever rolled their eyes at me, because, despite our differences dealing with Anxiety, it's still a wonderful depiction of how my head works.

Overall, I loved this book and I can guarantee that I will be picking it up again and again in the future when I start to feel overwhelmed with myself. I definitely recommend this book to everyone! There's no romance or action or paranormal creatures, but it's still intense read that will raise awareness on Anxiety and leave it's mark on you for a long time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Memorable and Worthwhile to Read
RAE is raw, real, and I'm truly grateful that Swiggett shared her story.

As one of the newest additions to the Louder Than Words series of memoirs, RAE is definitely memorable and worthwhile to read. Rae is quiet and introverted outside of her comfort zone at home. She gets tongue-tied whenever she has to speak in class, forgetting the right answers in only seconds. She worries that everyone's watching every move she makes. Even her weight becomes something she struggles with. She's the girl who just might be faking sick at home, or maybe even ducking her head when you pass her in the halls...and she's completely real.

RAE is one of those memoirs that I'm sure a lot people can relate with at one point or another. I knew by the time I finished reading the first chapter that RAE was eerily close to how I remember my high school experience. All those times when you think everyone is mocking you and your heart won't stop pounding, or when all the wrong words come out in a jumbled mess whenever you try to speak around people you aren't comfortable with, the fear that grips you sometimes, even when you know everything is okay...it's real, it happens, and it's nice to know that those of us who experience some of these moments are not alone.

Highlights: I could relate with certain aspects of Swiggett's memoir. I remember those days in high school (I still can feel that way in class). I have to really praise Swiggett for taking a chance, being brave, and sharing her story. I know I really wish I had read something like RAE back when I was in high school.

Lowlights: There were a few confusing moments. Yet, I couldn't stop reading until I finally finished the entire book. I couldn't tear myself away.

RATING: 4.5 out of 5

4-0 out of 5 stars Review from marie LOVES books!
It's hard to review a memoir since it's about someone's life.

It's been awhile since I've been in high school, but just because I'm out of high school doesn't really mean the teasing stops. Reading Rae's story brought me back to middle school, a memory I think I had forgotten where people who I thought were my friends one day, spent the rest of the year talking about me within earshot distance and throwing spit balls at the back of my head. I was brought back to the days when I'd call in sick to school because I couldn't face it. And the whole time I was reading her story, I couldn't help but feel bad for her. Like I wanted to somehow end up in that room and tell her it's okay.

Reading about her panic attacks also hit close to me. I constantly think about death, or well, I did. Sometimes I still do. And it's horrible. For a few years I had a fear of leaving the house on Halloween. I avoid road trips or long drives. I don't usually get panic attacks on airplane rides, just where there's a lot of turbulence. But all these feelings and all these thoughts are horrible and they make some days far worse than the rest.

The part that surprised me the most about reading this was that Chelsea is a fellow book blogger! She mentioned a road trip with her and Kristi at the end of the book which I remember reading on my news feed on Twitter not too long ago!

I love the idea behind the "Louder Than Words" series and I can't wait to read the rest of them!

4-0 out of 5 stars Review from Luxury Reading
Rae: My True Story of Fear, Anxiety, and Social Phobia, part of the Louder Than Words series, is the story of Chelsea Rae Swiggett as told in her own words. As far back as Chelsea could remember, she felt different. The sounds of airplanes kept her up at night, worried that one might crash into her house at any minute. Family road trips were a source of constant anxiety as Chelsea imagined dozens of different ways to die in a car. High school was its own ordeal. Transferring to a new school for freshman year, Chelsea hoped to make a fresh start, but her fear of social interactions led her classmates to believe that she was at best extremely socially awkward and at worst mute.

As Chelsea struggled to step outside her perceived comfort zone and be more social, the result was just more uncomfortable silences and missed opportunities to form bonds with her peers. Her admissions to her mother that she was different were met with "you're just shy"; Chelsea finally met with a psychiatrist when she blurted out that she was depressed, and was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.

Constant anxiety was a new concept for me, and reading Rae gave me a better understanding of what it's like to live with this disorder. Chelsea was very honest in describing her feelings and experiences, and I think her story is an important read for anyone. Those who don't know much about the disorder will hopefully learn to be more sensitive towards individuals suffering with anxiety. For those who deal with anxiety on a daily basis or who have family members that do, Rae will show them that they are not alone and that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

5-0 out of 5 stars A meaningful and moving memoir!
My Rating: 4.5

Rae was a meaningful and moving memoir written by our very own blogger The Page Flipper. Chelsea's vulnerability and raw honesty was commendable. It takes a lot of guts to reveal hidden fears to others. There is always that chance that people might not accept you for who you are. I for one, respect and can somewhat relate with Chelsea. Over the years, I also struggled with anxiety and the fear of death. Like Chelsea, my imagination can somewhat be overactive and I tend to worry too much. Also in comparison, I'm also afraid of plane crashes, car accidents or anything that doesn't look safe. The part where I sympathized most within the story, was her social anxiety. So many teens and adults deal with emotional discomfort and fear while interacting with others. I believe now a days, this plays a huge role in bullying. I hate people who scrutinize individuals and make them feel insecure and worthless. Who are we to judge?

This memoir has the ability to touch a lot of lives who suffer with the same phobias. The part where Chelsea mentioned her anxious feelings in class brought back so many memories for me. I despised participating in class and always made it my business to sit in the back. I always felt like people were observing my every imperfection, so I figured no one could see me besides the wall. To this day, I'm not really sure why I have these feelings, but I've learned to hide them very well. I appreciate Chelsea for opening her soul to readers. She's taught me that I am not alone and can have the strength to surpass my fears and live in the moment. Not only was there intense stories, her writing was also impeccable. She has great story-telling skills that will hopefully one day grace the pages of a YA fiction novel. Overall, I'm glad to have had the chance to understand Chelsea more as a person. I recommend this memoir to those who want to read a touching and enlightening book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't Live Up to Its Title
I was very disappointed in this CD.I suffer from emetophobia (fear of vomiting).I didn't expect this CD to directly cover this phobia (the only CD I've found, so far, that actually mentioned this particular phobia was Steven Gurgevich's"Relieve Anxiety with Medical Hypnosis")but felt that, if it examined phobias and fears in general, it would be beneficial.I like to use anti-anxiety CDs when I experience a bout of nervousness about my fear, so this CD seemed right up my alley.Unfortunately, I don't think it lives up to its title.

I can sum up Harrold's speech about fears and phobias very quickly: Fears and phobias are often created by a "learned response" we experience in childhood. We might observe someone screaming at the sight of a spider and later in life associate spiders with fear.Such "learned responses" can be unlearned but Harrold doesn't go into that. That is all he has to say about fears and phobias. The rest of the CD consists of two meditation/relaxation sessions. He explains proper breathing technique as he does in his other CDs.He could have made a different brief speech at the beginning, added the relaxation sessions, and named the CD something else.Besides his brief comments at the beginning, there is not much about this CD that distinguishes it as a fear/phobia CD.He talks about focusing on the object of your anxiety, pinching your hand during anxious moments, and subliminal messages on being in control, but that is very general and doesn't necessarily mean phobias. The second session is a little more direct as he has you focusing on the situation that caused you fear and to become detached from it, but I didn't think that was enough.I already have his CD"Creating Inner Peace & Calm"which offers similar relaxation sessions and the same instructions on breathing. I don't think this CD is that much specialized on fears and phobias to warrant the title. As a meditation CD, it is good, but I expected much more.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's Good!
This CD is as good as the rest of Glenn Harrold's hypnosis CDs. I've checked out some of the other hypnosis CDs and Harrold's are the best.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good relaxing tool but, not useful for fears and phobias
After listening to this CD several times, I realized that it helped me relax but did not help with fears & phobias. ... Read more

Product Description
This volume presents the first published manual for cognitive-behavioral group therapy for social phobia (CBGT), an empirically supported treatment approach that has been applied in clinical and research settings for over 20 years. Part I provides an up-to-date overview of the disorder, addressing such issues as classification, diagnosis, prevalence, and comorbidity. A comprehensive cognitive-behavioral model of social phobia is delineated, and assessment procedures are described in depth. Part II takes the clinician step by step through implementing each of the 12 sessions of CBGT. The authors demonstrate how to orient clients to the approach; implement in-session exposures, cognitive restructuring techniques, and homework assignments; and overcome stumbling blocks in treatment. Filled with helpful clinical pointers, case examples, and therapist-client dialogues, the book also includes handy sample handouts and forms.

5-0 out of 5 stars HE KNEW SINATRA AND LENNON.
The first part of this guys life sounds like the London version of Hollywood he knew them all. World champion boxers, singers, actors including Sinatra and Lennon, but as Social Phobia takes him over he begins a desent into hell and ends up broke ill and destitute. I got the 1st edition back in 05 but this 2nd edition 08 is bigger and better. He tells us what became of the American girl he loved so much. The is also a section on famous people who have suffered this phobia and an update on what the medical world are doing to help.Even a section on how it affects one's sex life I have never found a phobia book to touch this one. You'll be with him every step of the way from hi-flyer to the gutter. I won't spoil the ending but thanks to the Irish he finds a cure. For the record I don't suffer any phobias I just love a good read and this is a superb one.

5-0 out of 5 stars social phobia book
really liked this book was very interesting and knowledgeable amazing experience this guy endured i can relate.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Hell" is right on the mark
This very short, very readable book should be required reading for all sociopbobes like me. Cunningham does a good job of describing his reactions to being around people, especially the physical reactions---different than my own, which are primarily mental reactions.

His "remedy" is a very simple, straightforward one.It may be too simple.I don't know if it could make a difference in peoples' minds. You know, you read a book, you are very involved in it, but then you put it down, and there you still are.

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Hell of Social Phobia"
I found Terry Cunningham's book very interesting, having myself suffered from shyness when young, what my parents had called an "inferiority complex" - being very shy and lost for words in the company of others. However in reality the individual does not feel "inferior" in any way, but experiences difficulty in maintaining his or her self confidence sufficiently enough to establish a dialogue with strangers.

The book, is a very readable account of the life of an individual suffering from an extreme form of social phobia, where even the most mundane events such as entering a store, or having a meal in a restaurant causes the social phobia sufferer extreme trepidation and anxiety.

"The Hell of Social Phobia" will be of interest to anyone who has suffered from lack of confidence in themselves, or the ability to project themselves particularly in the company of strangers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST read for panic self help
One of the best books out there on panic.Having agoraphobia I was really looking for hope.I found this book and it gave me so much inspiration to get out there and start challenging my beliefs and fears.I have read as many books as I can get my hands on to deal with panic and this is one of the best.
This explains everything in a light hearted way, but with real scientific basis. Some books almost bring me to panic, but this book inspires.
It's not a book you will read once and put down, never to be read again. You will find yourself constantly going over and re-reading to really gain mental strength.
It wasn't a total cure for me but it has been the basis of my path to re-entering the world of the living.

5-0 out of 5 stars For the self aware
This book starts with the authors personal story of living with an anxiety disorder. It is neither condescending nor difficult to read and uses humor and easy to understand examples.I liked how the author described anxiety as a spectrum that includes panic attacks, GAD, PTSD, and phobias. It is easy to see how one person can have behaviors and thoughts that fit into more than one category. The author gives you ample opportunity for self reflection and guides you to the root of your specific problem. It is expected that while reading this book you would be taking notes, doing the exercises, and actively participating in cognitive behavioral therapy.Although reading the book was insightful the life changing experiences can only be achieved through hard work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what it states
This book has so many wonderful tips for helping overcome anxiety.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life.
This book is a very great self help book. It is easy to use and teaches in a clear down to earth way. It worked for me and I am positive it can work for others who may or may not be using prescription drugs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and helpful!
I am a mother of two young children, ages 5 and 7.While they are relatively well-adapted to their school experiences, I wanted to learn more about the issues of anxiety, self-esteem and bullying before they are a presence in our lives.Ms. Mayer's book did an excellent and well-organized job of presenting the problems that children have and how to approach these issues. Her focused and thoughful style has helped me understand these school issues and I believe, given me better strategies for confronting school challenges!

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, concise, targeted, practical solutions to issues many children face in school.
As a mother of 3 and psychotherapist who works with school-age clients, I am very pleased to have found this invaluable resource. This book manages to not only to describe and explain a great number of issues and their causes, but to give creative and practical approaches to dealing with them.

I have a bookshelf heavy with books specifically on anxiety, bullying, panic attacks - but this book has somehow managed to pull wisdom on this wide spectrum together in an organized and accessible fashion. The exercises include controlled breathing and imagery in addition to ways to talk to your child about the problem. It's so important to recognize the mind body connection in anxiety issues and this is at the heart of the book.

It also recognizes the importance of nutrition in the equation.Who knew bananas may help reduce anxiety?I didn't!

Another gem - making a little album of successful people who overcame the same challenges your child is facing. My dyslexic daughter found doing this a real eye opener.

I rarely take the time to recommend books online - but this had to be an exception, as I have truly found it to be an absolute gem.

Take a look inside - but just briefly the book covers helping children cope with anxiety, separation, bullying, phobias, panic attacks, homework, tests, fitting in, perfectionism, building self-esteem, conflict at home, learning and physical challenges.

2-0 out of 5 stars Missing the big point
The author has some great advice on behavioral modifications, adaptions and importance of nutrition and rest.Unfortunately, she doesn't question the basic premise of school structure.Homework has tripled for most ages since 1981, school days have lengthened, and lunch periods are often reduced to only 20 minutes. Is it really necessary for us to CREATE this much stress for our kids in the first place? Is there no one wondering if this stress is optimal?Performance is not increasing and there is growing evidence that over burdening our children has an inverse correlation to performance.Kids burn out and lose the love of learning. They gobble lunches and aren't mindful of what they eat, leading to obesity.Homework loads reduce the amount of time for play and physical activities, also increasing obesity. The increase in "on task" time reduces the time needed for consolidation and also impedes learning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Effective
As a mother of a 7 year old daughter who is already a bit Type A, this book was a valuable resource to me in channeling her desire to excel in a healthy way.

I found the exercises at the end of each section to be especially helpful. It enabled me to actually role play certain issues with her and guide her effectively through them.

As a health and fitness professional one of my favorite sections was the one on nutrition and how that effects a child's brain as well as their moods. I also thought the chapter on getting physical with your child (exercise) was right on target and great advice considering our current issues with childhood obesity in this country.

In summary this is an excellent resource for any parent who wants to make the most of these early developmental years in our children's lives.

4-0 out of 5 stars Overcoming School Anxiety
In an age where homework has tripled and children spend their free time in all sorts of planned activities the pressures to keep up and perform better than their peers can be staggering. As a parent this book gave me the tools to be able to recognize and understand how to properly deal with everyday anxieties my child might face.It is a must read and a great reference guide for any parent with school age children. ...
