5-0 out of 5 stars A Thought Provoking Important Book
I found this book to be a thought provoking and important book.Dr. Swinford really delivers on what the back cover says.It reads:"We are preoccupied with the future. What will tomorrow bring? What does my future hold?To most people it is the central question. If they were given one wish it would be to know the future. But the future is not only our wish, but also our fear. What will tomorrow bring? What will happen? We try to find peace of mind by believing that tomorrow will be pretty much like today, that the agenda we have set out for tomorrow will actually come to pass just as we have planned it.Deep inside we know the truth, however, and that is the source of our fear.It only takes one phone call, one unexpected occurrence, a few words from a physician, and our life is changed forever. This is the deep-seated, universal fear.An unimaginable amount of money is spent trying to overcome this fear.We employ analysts, forecasters, and even fortune-tellers to try and reassure us about the future. The amount spent on each is usually determined by the accuracy of their track record. But at the best these are guesses and at the worst they are frauds. In this book Dr. Swinford shows that there is a way to know the future, and it's free and readily accessible to everyone.Even better, it has a track record that can be verified to be 100% accurate."
This book is about the prophecies of Daniel, found in the Bible, and how they have proven to have come true even though the majority of them were written centuries before their fulfillments.Dr. Swinford documents them very well, and shows that these fulfillments can be verified by looking in any encyclopedia. He also shows that there are a number of prophecies in the Book of Daniel that have not been fulfilled yet and discusses these prophecies in great detail as well.
The book is written in an easy to read style that will be enjoyable by just about anybody, so you won't be blown away by academic verbiage in this book.I enjoyed this book tremendously and rate it at 5 out of 5 Stars. ... Read more

Dr. Callahan has other books in which he also outlines the technique given in this book. But, in this book, the technique is fully given and in more detail and easier to understand. With the info he gives you, anyone can do this with great results even just reading along out of the book as you go.If you are interested in this type of work, this book is a classic! It really does work and releases phobias immediately in just a 20 minute session. This technique changed the whole direction of my life by instantly removing phobias that were holding me back from what I needed to do. 4-0 out of 5 stars Much better than "Tapping the Healer Within"
I wish this book were back in print again. It is better than "Tapping the Healer Within", in that it is written in a much more clear and concise manner (although he does wander a bit and get repetitive at times). He discusses "fear of success" in some detail, and what he thinks it really consists of. There is a shortcut guide in the back for using the method, with pictures.

This is the same as "The Five-Minute Phobia Cure" withan extra chapter addressing Public Speaking and Cold-Calling specifically, and some minor re-working of some of the chapters.

"Five-Minute" also has the shortcut guide. The list of phobias in the book is interesting, and he suggeststhe same treatment for all of them.

Well worth borrowing from your local library, or getting through interlibrary loan, especially if you found "Tapping" difficult to wade through--I did. This book was much easier to understand. I do, however, think the used prices are 'way on the high side.

Some authors with later books just rehash the same (in this case good) concept over and over, without addinganything significant. This earlier book is better.

4.5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book
This is a great practical guide to help any professional in creating an anxiety group. It offers multiple activities that you can use to customize the group experience. Moreover, not only does it offer an activity, but also an explanation on the purpose, reasoning, and theory behind it. Great use of CBT and worth every penny.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for group facilitators running any type of group, not just anxiety
As a psychologist specializing in treating anxiety and also running anxiety groups, this book is a great resource and gives wonderful exercises for running groups. It's arranged so that each exercise is given 1 to 2 pages and clearly marked so you don't have to read the whole book from cover to cover looking for a specific exercise. The group exercises range from physical activity to writing down thoughts, feelings etc. The reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 is because it often refers to the authors' accompanying book. Therefore if you want a few certain handouts then you need to buy their other book too. This doesn't happen often, I just found it a bit annoying when it did. With that said, the book is an excellent resource for anyone wanting to run groups as anxiety is universal and is guaranteed to affect the participants of any group you run, regardless of whether it's an anxiety group or not. For example I also run Pre-Parenting Courses for first time dads-to-be and the exercises work wonderfully. This is a must for anyone's library who is running groups.

Product Description
Dr. Jeffrey L. Brown provides parents with useful suggestions for teaching children how to channel their own imaginations to calm their fears and banish the bogeyman!

The childhood years are fraught with situations that bring about fear and apprehension in children, whether it's a visit to the doctor or merely going to bed at night. In this simple guide, Dr. Brown explains the essential techniques of Imagination Training, an innovative method of using a child's own vivid imagination as a coping mechanism to reduce both physical and emotional discomforts. He offers age-appropriate solutions to a wide range of childhood situations, including "The Magic Glove" to alleviate a toddler's fear of a doctor's needle and "The Takealong Hero" to address a youngster's more complex anxiety about starting school or overcoming shyness in social situations.

Whatever the situation, Imagination Training can help your child to:
-- cope with real or perceived fears
-- improve self-confidence and performance at school and at play
-- relieve physical and emotional stress and distress

Along with Julie Davis, a regular contributor to parenting magazines, pediatrician Jeffrey L. Brown shows parents that the most powerful tool to help allay childhood fears and tears lies in a child's own imagination. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent How-to Book
Many therapy books only talk about techniques that must be done by a professional. This book actually teaches you how to use the tapping techniques on yourself. It also provides case-histories of success stories. Very easy to read and easy to follow.

4-0 out of 5 stars An intriguing approach for phobias, anxiety, PTSD, ...
The author does a good job of detailing how tapping works. After reading it I felt I could apply this to my own clients if it seemed appropriate. The challenge for someone trying this on their own would be to identify the underlying belief that they need to tap on.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Lot of Hype; No Substance
I bought the book because I had read the excerpt of the first few pages and was intrigued, since I am in this field and was thinking about exploring using this technique in my practice. The author's first sentence is "I'm not a woo-woo person."However, I came away from this book feeling like all this technique was is in fact "woo woo." (And I read the book twice!) The part that I didn't appreciate was the fact that the author spends an awful amount of time trying to convince the reader of a few things--1.) that this technique works despite lack of empirical evidence, 2.) that empirical evidence is not needed to be effective and 3)that there are a lot of people who say they have been helped by this, therefore it's valid. When a book says that the rules of science don't need to be applied to their technique, it feels disrespectful to me.

I would have appreciated if she admitted that this book has no scientific basis. Then I could choose to continue reading or not and it would be up to me. But to try to convince me that this is a respectable technique, and that we should just ignore the data (or lack thereof)--it just felt like an infomercial at best and a scam at worst.

I did give the book one star because it was easy to read and it was interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars This system is simple but provides profound results.
I've used tapping with my clients in my hypnotherapy practice. Once the technique is mastered, tapping has empowered my clients to alter undesired emotional states, confront erroneous beliefs, control pain levels, end addiction, discover creative ways to solve problems, and remove obstacles to desired change.I have witnessed, and experienced personally, amazing results. I also recommend finding an experienced practitioner who can reveal and model the subtleties of using this process in a fluid and organic way. Tapping can truly change your life.

Product Description
Research conducted by the National Institute of Mental Health has shown that anxiety disorders are the number one mental health problem among American women and are second only to alcohol and drug abuse among men. Approximately 15 percent of the population of the United States, or nearly 40 million people, have suffered from panic attacks, phobias, or other anxiety disorders in the past year. Nearly a quarter of the adult population will suffer from an anxiety disorder at some time during their life. Yet only a small proportion of these people receive treatment..... It is quite possible to overcome your problem with panic, phobias, or anxiety on your own through the use of the strategies and exercises presented in this workbook. Yet it is equally valuable and appropriate, if you feel so inclined, to use this book as an adjunct to working with a therapist or group treatment program. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars With Respect to the Previous Reviewer
The book referred to by the previous reviewer is indeed by Masterton, but is not PHOBIA, which is a movie novelization he wrote under the name of "Thomas Luke" and quite a bit shorter than 400+ pages; in fact it comes in at around 250, and it's a psychological thriller about a fear-besotted psychiatrist watching his patients die of what they themselves fear most. (The film was directed by John Huston and starred Paul-Michael Glaser of STARSKY & HUTCH.) As filmscript novelizations go, it's not as memorable as one might hope from Masterton, but utterly readable and very entertaining.

Likely the previous reviewer is referring to Masterton's FEAST -- which is indeed QUITE dark, very graphic, and does indeed center around a religious sect that rationalizes cannibalism as holy and biblical. It's an excellent horror novel, if you can stomach it (pun intended) ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Religious Horror
A truly scary tale, not for the faint of heart.Indeed, at times, the author steers too much into the gruesome.

Nevertheless, it is mesmerizing...hard to lay down the book until all 400+ pages are done.

Surprisingly, Masterton even applies biblical quotes in a reasonably accurate way, as he chronicles a truly awful religious sect. The ending was surprising as I expected something darker.

Only in this ending, do we have anything supernatural in the book.Yet, for the first 440 pages, the author is able to scare his audience to the point of nightmares.

Although I like Graham Masterton's horror books, this one was unexpectantly good!

Higly recommended. ... Read more

Product Description
Overcome Your Fear of Bridges, Balconies, Elevators, and More--You Can Do It!

The second-most common specific phobia, acrophobia, the fear of heights, is a very disturbing and disruptive condition. It's hard for anyone to go about his or her day without crossing a bridge, scaling a ladder, or ascending an exterior stair case. Fear of heights can make air travel difficult or impossible; even a ride in an elevator can be a challenging and disruptive experience for people with this conditon.

Fortunately, specific phobias are among the easiest psychological problems to treat, with fear of heights being very treatable. With a safe and effective exposure-based cognitive-behavioral program to work with, most sufferers will experience relief from their fear after only a few sessions. This book distills the most effective treatments for acrophobia into an easy-to-follow, effective program for overcoming fears for good. It walks you through simple steps to evaluating fearful thinking and making changes that can make those thoughts a memory. The book also covers ways to avoid relapse and emergency strategies for panicky moments. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good advice
The book is well written and avoids most of the usual fillers that make the book longer, more expensive and most importantly tedious. The book is actually quite short (and indeed it could be even shorter)but it is useful in giving you a better understanding of what fear of heights is and very sensible, if not earth shattering, suggestions on how to address it. You get the impression though the treatment is simply: confront your fears directly. I would have liked a more extensive discussion of the possibility that fear of heights is caused by a dysfunction of the sense of balance. If that were the case, then cognitive therapy would lose much of its relevance, so you can see why therapist may not like it, but still the book should have included a discussion of the topic

5-0 out of 5 stars Height phobics, this is a must
As a psychologist specializing in treating phobias, this book is excellent. The author is a world renowned expert in the area of anxiety and phobias. He has also found a niche market because from my knowledge, no other book exists which is written in simple terms for the general public and just covers height phobia or acrophobia. Antony's books are always a safe bet for reliability in that they are grounded in the latest cutting edge research. In other words, what he says actually works. This is very reasurring for someone with a phobia, as to face one's phobia is terrifying and something a non-phobic person can not appreciate. I previously successfully beat my phobia of medical procedures and it is such a freeing experience. If you're considering dealing with your height phobia then I highly recommend this book. Speaking both from experience and as a professional, I can say that the avoidance is much more painful than actually facing your phobia. Good luck.

Product Description
Social phobia (DSM-IV 300.23), also known as social anxiety disorder (DSM-IV 300.23) is a diagnosis within psychiatry and other mental health professions referring to excessive social anxiety (anxiety in social situations)[citation needed] causing abnormally considerable distress and impaired ability to function in at least some areas of daily life. The diagnosis can be of a specific disorder (when only some particular situations are feared) or a generalised disorder.Generalised social anxiety disorder typically involves a persistent, intense, and chronic fear of being judged by others and of potentially being embarrassed or humiliated by one's own actions. These fears can be triggered by perceived or actual scrutiny by others. While the fear of social interaction may be recognised by the person as excessive or unreasonable, considerable difficulty can be encountered overcoming it. Approximately 13.3 per cent of the general population may meet criteria for social anxiety disorder at some point in their lifetime, according to the highest survey estimate, with the male to female ratio being 1:1.5. What do Lady Macbeth, Sigmund Freud, Howard Hughes, J. Edgar Hoover, Shirley Jackson, and Carly Simon have in common? They all--along with 14-20 million people in the United States--have suffered at one time from an anxiety disorder. This book gives an extraordinary account of the lives, thoughts, and struggles of people like them who suffer from phobias, panic attacks, and obsessive-compulsive disorders. Gracie hasn't left her house in thirty years out of fear she'll be contaminated. Jerry spent hours each day picking up debris on the subway platform. Norm's bridge phobia led him into alcoholism. David bright, young, ambitious feared he'd lose his job because he so dreaded giving sales presentations. These are some of the case studies exemplary of the approximately fourteen to twenty million people who suffer from anxiety disorders in this country that are found in this riveting and instructive book. Raeann Dumont lays bare the features of obsessive-compulsive disorder, phobias, and panic. Utilizing cognitive therapy and self-help techniques, she helps readers recognize anxiety-producing thoughts and shows how, through reality testing and assessing anxiety situations, these compulsions can be managed. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars No science
There is no science in this book. It is basicly a book saying that a person with OCD can just 'get over it' when they cannot because brain scans have PROVEN that the brain is over active and not functioning correctly. OCD is a serious mental illness, not a fault of faulty thinking nor is it the person with OCD's fault.

I am sure the author is a caring person but she is not a doctor and seems to have formed her own ideas and theories and not consulted what other SCIENTISTS are learning. It is important to note that she is NOT a doctor, not a scientist, nor is she studying this disease.

She is basicly saying it is the fault of your thinking processes, not the fault of the disease. Yes, her book has some good ideas in it but she doesn't seem to realize that OCD is a real illness of the brain which, in OCD people, does not work correctly. AND it is not illness specific, meaning she talks of many mental illnesses NOT JUST OCD, and makes general statements.

I would recommend Brain Lock by Jeffrey Schwartz, who is a doctor and has some real science and brain scans to back up what he is saying. And read other books on OCD also, those authored by real doctors though.

I have OCD and Brain Lock was recommended to me by my therapist.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I enjoyed all of the stories of others suffering from OCD. Most are extreme cases, but overall I could relate to the fear, etc. It was nice to know there are others with the same problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Sky Is Falling: Understanding and Coping With Phobias, Panic, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders
Absolutely a must-read for those suffering from OCD or other Obsessions, or for those who want to understand loved-ones dealing with these disorders. Your understanding will greatly expand. Also includes steps towards recovery. Highly recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars Misinformation about OCD
I found this book troubling, because right from the start it presents inaccurate information about the treatment and cause of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Early on in the book, the author writes the following about the "in vivo" therapy she does with clients with OCD. This therapy exposes the client to a feared object/situation/etc. with the support of the therapist.

"The idea was that I, as the therapist, could demonstrate that there really was no objective danger in any of these things or situations, and help the fearful person to confront each of the items on the list and see that nothing terrible happend. When we had worked all the way through the list, the person would see the folly of these fears and no longer be fearful." And then she goes on to say how most of the time this works to cure the fear.

Exposure to feared objects/situations is an accepted and highly regarded part of treatment for OCD. However, the purpose is not to show the client that their fear is irrational or unecessary and knowing this does not cure OCD. In fact, in most cases people with OCD recognize that their fears are excessive and unecessary - but despite this knowledge they remain powerful, disturbing, and sometimes disabling. Therapy through exposure is intended to give the client opportunities to learn to live with the extreme anxieties of these situations and to learn healthy ways to cope with them. You CANNOT convince someone with OCD that their obsessive anxieties are in error and thereby cure them. That is not the nature of the disorder or the intent of the widely-used exposure therapy many Cognitive-Behavioral Therapists employ.

The second major red flag you will run into right away in this book is how the author keeps giving examples of OCD "caused" by faulty parenting. (Her first example is that her mother's excessive washing of her as a child caused her to have OCD and the second is about a mother who inadvertantly taught her daughter that thinking about someone dying could make it happen.) Though the exact causes of OCD are still uknown, it is NOT an accepted theory in the modern-day that faulty parenting can cause OCD.

Though I am sure there are interesting aspects to this book, I would recommend you look elsewhere for more accurate information on Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
I can't give full 5 stars, as i'm rating the whole book.
The best part of the book comes towards the end, page 229 onwards. The preceeding chapters are typical items one can find in all OCD books.
If I were to rate only those towards the end, dealing with how to get better,
I'll simply rate this book 6 out of 5 stars. ... Read more
