Product Description
The difficulties faced by people with Asperger Syndrome (AS) cannot be underestimated, but the emotional problems experienced by those around them - partners, family and friends - are often overlooked. Focusing on what is referred to as the Cassandra phenomenon, where the neurotypical partner often needs more emotional guidance than the AS partner, this volume gathers together letters, thoughts and poems to give voice to the loneliness, frustration and love felt by many individuals who are close to one or more people with AS. This collection provides the emotional support, insight and understanding needed to deal with the emotions that AS evokes within close relationships.

FAAAS Inc. (Families of Adults Afflicted with Asperger's Syndrome) aims to offer support to the family members of adult individuals afflicted with Asperger's Syndrome. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Too true
I am a wife of 44+ years, and have always had "issues" with my husband that never could get resolved. Finally, a friend suggested researching Asperger's, and 8 books later, he is continuing to be accurately described. He does not know....
This book tells it like it is - certainly not always pretty, and usually tear-jerking when I need to cry.It helps to know that I am not the only one who has felt this way, and others tell it far better than I ever could. Should be required reading for anyone studying Asperger's or working with Asperger's adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars NT living with AS partner
Excellent book! Highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about their AS partner and trying to understand one another.Very helpful to me as I struggle on a daily basis to understand my AS partner. We live separate lives and in "mute" relationship under the same roof since communicating is such a barrier in AS partner. This book is very informative.... I keep it close as a resource guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars my help line
This book came to me when i was about to give up, no-one seemed to understand me or possibly believe me,it has highlighted so many areas.. the words, "is anyone listening" lets one feel that there is hope and that there are others out there in the same situation.Autism with asperger traits or aspergers alone, there is something for all who have a spouse with the syndrome. This book does give a voice to the frustrations and lonliness that we feel, also how our spouses feel, broadening our understanding and giving us more insight,a must read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money on this one
Maybe I'm biased because I'm autistic myself, but I had to throw this book away after the poem where the author described being married to her autistic husband as being chained in a dungeon then the next article proceeded to describe a family's autistic son as probably the worst thing that had ever happened to them - I wonder what life is like for the autistic people living in these situations?!I'm so glad I read this before I went to a FAAAS conference - I might have gotten lynched!Don't waste your money with this book . . .

Granted, I understand that it is frustrating for families living with those with autism - I live alone for my own benefit and that of potential roommates, but, especially for people who are married to someone who is autistic - if it is that bad, get out of the relationship - I know a couple where the husband is autistic and the wife is bipolar who have been trying to make their marrige work for 40 years and have failed miserably . . .

If you want to know what it is really like to be an adult autistic, go read something by Temple Grandin, Donna Williams, Dawn Prince-Hughes, Jen Birch, Edgar Schneider, Jerry Newport, or all the other wonderful authors who have taken the time to write books - if you want a positive example of a family dealing with autism read 'A Thorn In My Pocket' by Temple Grandin's mother (who's name I don't have in front of me) - don't waste your money on this one

3-0 out of 5 stars Great book idea but bad representation!
In the beginning of this book they define the root of this book which is the Cassandra Phenomenon or the "invisible walking wounded." The organizations invented term for the disorder Asperger adults give those close to them.Wow! This says we Aspergers are a mess and doesn't give any great advice. It just says if there not diagnosed get the loved one or friend diagnosed and if your depressed join the club we are to! You have to be kidding. My boyfriend who is typical in all ways and is a doctor agrees the idea to have a book to support the supporters of the Syndrome especially adults is incredibly needed but this book does a poor job.One story I remember is a complaint story of how a wife can't understand her husband with Aspergers and hates it so much they divorce and never speek again with no regrets on her end. If you need a support book of Inspiration for someone like this maybe try Diagnosing Jefferson by the leading international publisher on the syndrome called Horizon. ... Read more

Product Description

Parental Alienation Syndrome occurs when a child is turned against his or her own parent. PAS is real, and it hurts; through the words of one sufferer, it can be exposed.

The best day in David Goodman's life was the day he became a father. His life was changed for the better with the arrival of a beautiful baby girl. For thirteen years, he held her, loved her, and cared for her-until, one day, she was removed from his life forever, through no fault of his own. Since then, Goodman has suffered as a result of Parental Alienation Syndrome (PAS).

PAS is very real. The innocent child is never to blame for the alienation. In most cases, one parent turns against the other parent and that parent may then pour poison into the ears of the innocent until the child turns against the unwanted parent, too. The result for the unwanted parent is abandonment, heartbreak, and loss. It's hard to believe it could happen, so imagine Goodman's surprise when he suddenly became the alienated member of his once-loving family.

Parental Alienation Syndrome and Me is Goodman's story, told through anecdotes and poetry. This is the vivid recording of one man's journey into despair over the loss of the love of his child, fifteen years ago and counting. The tale does not necessarily have a happy ending, but perhaps, through his words, another family will be saved the pain of PAS, and another child will be spared the pain of an alienated parent.

Product Description
Twenty-five years after the death of their baby brother in his crib, a death that still haunts them both, sisters Isabel and Nina are brought back together by the birth of Isabel's son, unlocking searing hidden memories and prompting the ultimate betrayal and a shocking tragedy. 40,000 first printing."Amazon.com Review
Long-buried secrets and resentments bubble lazily to thesurface over a few short weeks when Nina, a London photographer andartist, goes to the English countryside to help her outwardly perfectolder sister Isabel, who has just suffered through a difficultbirth. Though the household--Isabel's husband Richard, friend Edward, baby Antony, and a local nanny--seems hermetically sealed against theworld, past and present rear up to strike the sisters. "Thishouse is stiff with things that can't be said," observesNina. Stifling heat, menace, and memories radiate from these pages, keeping the reader on edge. Helen Dunmore, winner of the Orange Prize, heightens sometimes overly obvious drama with rich, sensual prose. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Sibling Rivalry
Isabel has just had her first baby, after a difficult delivery. Nina, a freelance photographer, comes to spend time with her sister at her house in England's South Downs, but almost immediately begins an intense sexual affair with Isabel's husband. It is Nina who tells the story; she is a warm sympathetic character while Isabel seems moody and neurotic; and the sexual descriptions are terrific. All the same, there is clearly something wrong in this family portrait, and Dunmore is marvelous at building mystery and suspense out of the tiniest events.

As in the only other Dunmore book that I have read, the Orange Prize winner A SPELL OF WINTER, there are secrets long buried in the childhood of the two siblings. These appear to center around the death in his cot of their infant brother Colin. Each has different memories of this event, but they may not be true memories and they contradict each other in significant ways. TALKING TO THE DEAD is a much less melodramatic novel than the almost-gothic WINTER, but it also depends on the elucidation of the past to explain the present and, with ominous foreboding, to predict the future. I greatly appreciated the relatively quiet development of the novel on the day-to-day level, and I was caught up in the growing suspense. But all the same, I felt that a denouement based simply on memories and dreams -- on who remembers what, in response to what trigger, and in what order -- is too disconnected from the present-day action to really work.

4-0 out of 5 stars one of the most disturbing books I've ever read
This book doesn't advertise itself as a horror story, but by the time the final twist is revealed, it becomes one of the most shocking novels in print, the more so because what happens could take place in almost any family. The visceral prose makes the incidents in the book extremely memorable, and the settings are vivid. One weakness for me was the narrator's love affair--it seemed to come out of nowhere, and didn't add much to the story, in my opinion, though I can practically recite every word of the sex scene. Another area that could have been improved was the description of the narrator's sister Isabel--we're told she's incredibly beautiful, but I would have preferred some more concrete descriptions, as her presence wasn't as strong as I think it should have been. But as a study of family psychology and the greed for parental attention that every child feels, "Talking to the Dead" succeeds with a macabre honesty. I thought about the book long after I had finished it.

Talking to the Dead, Helen Dunmore
An English writer, therefore, she really knows how to wield the language.Always a pleasure to read the Brits!
Isabel and Nina `Neen'.Who is the bad one?An absent father and mother who is a potter and largely stays in her room.Ruined by the death of the new baby Colin.Did one of the girls kill him? Evil lurks, Gothic style.Beastly hot weather and impending horrific storm, a dangerous murderous sea, a remote house in the country, where Isabel has constructed gardens with paths that meander meaninglessly.Fabulous word images.Ineffectual men, driven by their separate lusts. An oblivious young aspiring nanny.Dark everywhereyou look and little redemption. But this is really a great book.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Prose of a Poet
Isabel seems like an ordinary woman, until her sister Nina begins to dig in and think about the past they shared as children.Isabel's new baby is just adorable, but staring at the infant Nina begins to remember the little brother she once had, called Colin, a baby who died of cot death--I imagine the same thing as "crib death" here in the USA.To pay Isabel back for years of being more beautiful and evil, Nina undertakes a love affair with Richard, Isabel's older husband.

The two of them have sex, sex and more sex, outside mostly, in the various gardens of the beautiful country farmhouse.Their pale bodies crush the courgettes.

I couldn't understand why Nina would want to have sex with Richard, unless it was to punish Isabel.

The two sisters share a strange dynamic. Both are selfish and destructive.I didn't like the way Isabel calls Nina "Neen."When you read that word "Neen" two hundred times or more, you get sick of seeing it.

As far as I'm concerned, Nina's a pig.Nevertheless TALKING TO THE DEAD is a masterpiece of sensuality and vertiginous desire.Might be the best Barbara Vine book that Barbara Vine didn't write. However my old dad used to say that if a book has a gerund for a title it's going to be horrible. Not since WAITING FOR GODOT, said Dad, and the novels of Henry Green, has there been a good one.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best read in my 21st century...
'Talking to the Dead' is incredible at many levels. The voice is strong from the beginning. The relationship between the sisters is rich, wonderfully written, provocative. While it's a totally different work, it's a gem in the same way as 'A Handmaid's Tale': haunting, and something that leaves such powerful images that it's simply not forgettable. ... Read more
