Product Description
Polycystic ovarian syndrome is the number one cause of irregular periods and infertility in women. It affects 10% of women worldwide.PCOS is a condition of overproduction of androgens by the ovaries. In essence, the ovaries produce too much testosterone, causing abnormal hair growth, irregular or absent menstruation/ovulation, acne, and small benign cysts on the ovaries. If left undetected, PCOS can lead to cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. While researchers haven’t determined the cause of PCOS, they know it is linked to insulin resistance, which causes obesity.

That’s where this book comes in.Insulin resistance can be controlled with a low-carb diet fairly easily. What to Do When the Doctor Says It’s PCOS gives sufferers a diet and nutritional treatment program that goes beyond the usual regimen of birth control pills and fertility drugs. It can be used as an alternative and/or adjunct to their current treatments.

Cheryl Kimball is a free-lance writer and editor. She is former Director of Chronimed Publishing, a health book publisher with a focus on diet and diabetes. She is also former Publisher of the trade books division of Heinemann, a Reed International-owned education publisher.

Milton Hammerly, M.D. is a board-certified family practitioner and Medical Director of Complementary and Alternative Medicine for the Catholic Health Initiatives’ Centura Health facilities nationwide. He is author of four books in the Integrative Health Series:Diabetes, Depression, Menopause, and Fibromyalgia. He contribute regularly to professional journals and has taught at the Mind-Body Health Center in Aurora, CO.He lives in Denver, CO. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars PCOS
When I finished reading What to Do When the Doctor Says It's PCOSI felt much more informed about PCOS, what it means to have PCOS, the symptoms of PCOS, and what I can do to help the symptoms of PCOS, including weight gain.It helped me understand what is wrong with my body and I even learned a bit about how my thyroid interacts with my PCOS.I also learned that many people with PCOS can go on to become diabetic and what I can do to avoid this happening to me.I give this 5 stars because it is well written, laid out nicely, and very informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great overview of PCOS practical advice.
I wish I had this book when I was first diagnosed with PCOS.This book introduces many different aspects of PCOS evaluation and treatment options in language that the patient can understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good overall read, something you should invest in when you find out you have PCOS.
I sure didn't know what to read when I was diagnosed. There are a wealth of articles online if you do some basic researching. But I wanted hard copies of information. You know, stuff I could dog ear and highlight. :)This is one of the better books, so I recommend it.Especially if you're new to the idea of PCOS and don't know where to start.Good luck, ladies.

4-0 out of 5 stars good explanations
If you've just been diagnosed with PCOS this book gives a lot of information and explanations to help you through the diagnosis

3-0 out of 5 stars Deeply flawed, but a decent basic overview
Considering that this was published in 2003 and written by a pair of non-specialists (a family practitioner as opposed to an endocrinologist and a how-to author who's written about topics from horses to decorating) it's a good overview of the topic. However the coverage of individual topics is superficial, the tone is dumbed down, and then there are a couple of flaws that really stick in my craw. The chapter covering how a normal period is supposed to work was one of the most reader-unfriendly descriptions I've ever read. It was disorganized, confusing and patronizing. Worse, the book harps in chapter after chapter about weight loss, implying shamelessly that obesity is a cause of PCOS and weight loss is a treatment for it. In this the authors repeat the prejuidice one sees so often against the fundamentally benign and normal variation of adipose tissue. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars it was ok
You get what one would expect considering the size of the book.

It's good at giving detailed information about the effects of glucose on your health. The shortcoming is the section on the GI Diet.If I had not read other books and information, I would have been confused.

2-0 out of 5 stars Tiny & thin book
Decent info but not at all what I was expecting. There are many better PCOS books out there and the G.I. diet info was limited.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Diet Information
This book is excellent for diet management of PCOS, the seven steps are so useful and have helped me lose over 19 pounds in 3 months. The sample grocery list is very helpful as are the recipes. Very much recommend!

2-0 out of 5 stars Didn't work for me.
I've had PCOS for 23 years and have fought weight gain for most of them. The only time my body responded positively to any diet was on the Carbohydrate Addict's diet for Life. The only thing is, it's really hard to stay on it.I was at a healthy weight when I quit smoking, and figured I would try the Low G.I. for PCOS book for a new way of eating.I gained 20 lbs. in 6 months.I couldn't control the carb intake.Low G.I. or not, this diet made me crave more carbs, which in turn makes my hormones go crazy and makes me gain weight, esp. in my abdomen.I hope it works for other women with PCOS, but sadly, I did not get my money's worth from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative.Easy to understand.
I don't know a lot of medical terms, nor do I want to, but this book helped me to understand what my body is doing. If you are diagnosed with PCOS, this is a MUST read!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not another diet but a lifestyle change
I was recommended this book a couple of years ago from a friend and have always been grateful. Instead of reading like a diet guide the author explains GI and why certain foods should not be eaten together etc.The recipes are very tasty, however do require plenty of preparation and thought as opposed to a low fat diet. It has helped me maintain a healthy weight and encouraged me to finally cut out extra sugar and coffee!

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read & worked for me in practice
This book is well written, very easy to read and the logic behind it makes sense. It prescribes eating good carbs, avoiding bad carbs, separating protein & carbs in a meal, and waiting a certain period of time before switching from a protein meal to a carb meal & vice versa.

Once you get the knack of all that, it's easy to do and I found it removed my sugar swings/low blood sugar episodes altogether. However you do need to stick to the plan religiously to lose weight from it.

5-0 out of 5 stars great read
Bought this book but thought it would be like most other diet books which you read but never put into practice. However, it is simply written and thr diet, although not really aa "diet" is realistic and easy to follow on a daily basis. This low carb diet does work as well, within a few weeks the results were obvious and my cholestrol had fallen. Definetly recommend this book to anyone wanting to lose weight and reduce cholesterol. ... Read more

This digital document is a journal article from Evaluation and Program Planning, published by Elsevier in 2007. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
Evaluating federally funded research and development (R&D) presents unique challenges to both federal science agencies and evaluators. Often focusing only on outcome evaluative measures (such as productivity or economic value) can shortchange the true value of the federal investment. For example, program directors at the National Science Foundation (NSF) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) talk about the ''value added'' of the new interdisciplinary science centers that they have funded-and they hope to be able to capture how funding can generate increased capacity for new cutting-edge research in the future. The purpose of this paper is to present a use-and-transformation model for evaluating public R&D, which explicitly focuses on measuring capacity-based metrics for evaluation instead of outcome-based metrics. The theory for the model presented here explicitly uses the concept of a Knowledge Value Collective that was introduced by Bozeman and Rogers [Bozeman, B., & Rogers, J. D. (2002). A churn model of scientific knowledge value: Internet researchers as a knowledge value collective. Research Policy, 31(5), 769-794; Rogers, J. D., & Bozeman, B. (2001).
