Product Description
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is the most common endocrine cause of infertility and serious weight gain in young women. It affects millions—experts estimate about 6 to 10 percent of reproductive age women struggle with this devastating metabolic imbalance. Look around schools and malls in this country and you see the impact of this burgeoning epidemic: obese young women are everywhere. The numbers are staggering. The health risks are overwhelming—from increased risk of teenaged diabetes to young mothers with heart attacks or strokes, and early onset of breast and uterine cancers.

Early treatment is key to preventing serious health risks, but most sufferers don’t even know they have PCOS.Nor do doctors take it as seriously, often minimizing symptoms like excess body hair, weight gain, acne or thinning scalp hair, thinking they are just cosmetic" problems of overanxious young women. Gynecologists focus on helping women get pregnant rather than treating acne or weight gain. Endocrinologists typically consider ovarian problems the "turf " of gynecologists. Mood swings in PCOS can be severe, but psychiatrists typically don’t check hormones, so they don’t identify PCOS either. What’s a woman to do?

It’s not enough for doctors to tell women with PCOS to just "eat less and exercise more." Women need a practical guide to help them understand the disorder, know what tests to ask for, what the tests mean, what treatments are available, and how to take a stepwise approach to healthy hormone balance, sound meal plans, exercise, and stress management. This book provides the practical, user-friendly guide that women desperately need to be successful in getting help for this devastating disorder. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book, lots of detailed info on hormone balance
This book was great - I already have several books on PCOS so thought I'd probably read it all, however this one stands out from most others in its detail. It really goes into the nitty gritty of hormones and how slight changes affect them, and in turn how this can affect your mood and overall vitality. So many moments I thought - "ah-ha, I knew I wasn't crazy!". It discusses lots of different treatment strategies - I took the book with me into the doctors, and she even photocopied a few pages.
It also has a lot of specific detail on what tests to ask for when trying to get a diagnosis. The author really sympathises with the frustration so many PCOS sufferers have had to deal with.

Definitely a must-have book for anyone who has, or thinks she may have PCOS.

3-0 out of 5 stars This book is okay, but there is better
While this book does provide good information, I think that you can do better. Most of the book is written almost as an advertisement for the author's own PCOS clinic. She spends so much time touting how wonderful that she is that it is hard to read the book.It also made me wonder how accurate the information is, or if she just wanted to brag on herself and her clinic. If you get this book do not make the mistake I did and also order "Its my Ovaries, Stupid!" by the same author. They books are almost exactly the same.I recommend "The PCOS* Protection Plan: How to Cut Your Increased Risk of Diabetes, Heart Disease, Obesity, and High Blood Pressure" by Colette Harris.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money or time.Get another book.
This book is poorly written and barely edited. There are horrible grammar and punctuation mistakes. The authors should've had a seventh grader proof read this!It made me sad to think that women with PCOS don't have a lot of options as far as information goes. This book was embarrassing to read!I gave it one star because there wasn't an option for zero stars.I couldn't take the information or the author seriously because it was so poorly written.Buy the "When The Doctor Says It's... PCOS" book instead. You'll feel better.Trust me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Thought it would be better
I read all the reviews on this book before I purchased it. I hoped it would be better coming from a Doctor who slams other doctors. She says all other doctors want to do is to put you on drugs to help your symptoms. But really that is all she suggests as well. She reccomends going on the pill to help a lot of the symptoms. What happens when you don't want to be on the pill and you want to get pregnant? The pill can actually cause some of the symptoms when used for long peroids of time. After years of trying I ended up getting pregnant by losing weight with diet and exercise. I was really not impressed by this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource
I've read a few books about PCOS over the years and I have to say that this one really is the most helpful I've come across. Not only does it not repeat the same old out of date information that seems to continually spring up everywhere, but I learnt a lot of important new information, in particular that some health issues that I'd never thought to connect with PCOS may well be part of it after all. It's also given me some useful things to talk over with my specialist, including some new treatment options.

The book manages to tread the fine line between not overly dumbing down the scientific information, while also being readable by a layperson.

I'd highly recommend this to anyone who suspects they might have PCOS, has been only recently diagnosed or even those who have been living with the diagnosis for a long time and already feel pretty well informed. ... Read more
