5-0 out of 5 stars An Invaluable Information Source on Porphryia-Great!
I keep buying extra copies of this book, it's so well-written.I give it to doctors, to friends, to anyone I can to inform them about porphyria. It's easy enough reading without being simplistic, the perfect balance of medical information along with case studies and resource links.I really can't thank Diana enough for supplying the Porphyria community with this text.I wish it was mandatory reading for doctors in every hospital in this country.

5-0 out of 5 stars NEW EDITION IS GOOD QUALITY
I first came here andfound the book unavailable and so wanted it and found it from the publisher. The book is easy to read,
understandable, factual, and has a great bibliography where a person can go for more detailed reading. One of a kind!

5-0 out of 5 stars COMPREHENSIVE OVERVIEW SIMPLY STATED
I was given the term "porphyria" over the phone from the specialist who did not explain anything except told me to get this book and read it cover from cover. When the book arrived I had all kinds of questions which were covered in simple to understand language for the ordinary patient. No mumbo-jumbo of medical terms. When I went back to see the specialists we then were able to dialogue because we both had a basis of informationas a background. Since then I have ordered books for co-workers, family members and my pastor so they can understand what I have and understand that it is not a psychological disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars EASY-TO-UNDERSTAND BASIC PORPHYRIA
Luckily I ran across this very basic easy-to-read medical handbook designed for patients. Not the ordinary scientific approach to a complex subject, but written that any patient can understand the basis of their complex disease. It is a "keeper" and one that I know I will be sharingwith medical students and patients alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply stated, easy to understand and comprehensive.
This is not a heavy medical text or full of biochemical terms, but written in everyday layman's English, and something a clinician can share with a patient knowing that the book will cover all aspects of the acute hepatic form from description, medical history, drugs, nutrition, to family interpersonal relations to the wonderful case histories of case subjects.

No other porphyria book can be grasped as well as this one.
This book was written by a patient with a publishing house offering the book to the general public as part of the non-profit charitable Porphyria Educational Services, a group that gives
educational support for patients with this disease.

Unsafe Drug lists in this box and all other information found
in the text is regularly updated on a website of the same name,
so your handbook is always up-to-date.

I have freely shared this with my patients which they could read and share with family members. It was most helpful for them as well as saving costly time having to be spent in the clinic. ... Read more

Product Description
Desiree Lyon Howe is the co-founder of the American Porphyria Foundation and has also served as the Executive Director of the foundation for twenty five years. In this remarkable book, she relates her own experience with acute intermittent porphyria, a rare disease. Although the keystone of this book is Desiree's story, she also addresses the prime issues that obstruct patients from gaining a correct diagnosis and proper treatment for all of the other porphyrias, particularly since porphyria is not found through regular testing. In fact, many patients are not diagnosed until they are in serious condition or even close to death. In this book, Desiree embraces the challenges of porphyria with the courage and humor and writes in an open and honest discussion of every aspect of this group of diseases. She accompanies the personal stories of other patients in clear and readable prose, with up-to-date, understandable, scientific information of the medical issues involved, including details of the many new and effective treatment options. Every family member or loved one of a person diagnosed with porphyria will derive tremendous insight and guidancefrom Desiree's experience, as well as vital information to aid in navigating the complexities involved in confronting and surmounting this group of rare diseases. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable resource on Porphyria
I think this book is a must read for anyone with porphyria or those who suspect they may have it.Desiree Lyons does a terrific job of describing her trials and tribulations of getting diagnosed.Which is a problem for so many.It certainly is difficult to be ill with a disease that only tests properly for such a short time, though the effects of a porph attack can haunt one for weeks if not months.I bought this book for my soon to be ex doctor in hopes that she would read it.Judging by her lack of action during my last porph attack it's obvious she didn't!I'm not particularly religious so that section toward the back was of little interest to me.But overall a MUCH needed book on porphyria, I wish every healthcare professional as well as patients would read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Porphyria, A Lyon's Share of Trouble
Desiree Lyon Howe, co-founder and Executive Director of the American Porphyria Foundation, writes her book based on a life-time of experience and from her heart. She openly shares her triumphs and challenges with the disease. The writing brings the reader inside and shares the difficulties facing a patient with porphyria. Along with her personal story she offers scientific facts, experiences shared with her by other porphyria patients and detailed information for obtaining a diagnosis and treatment. The reader comes away with extensive and insightful knowledge of a rare disorder. Desiree lights a pathway to the complexities of confronting and dealing with porphyria. Thanks to her for sharing her life and knowledge. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Low Life Victoriana
More like 4-1/2 stars, but close.

Seamy seamy seamy. Ensnared me while it revolted me. I personally didn't find it terribly erotic, but I can see how some might, if you've a taste for the macabre, and for manipulation and revenge.

Graphic discriptions of unwashed Victorian London, along with startling invention and an unforseen, though somehow very right conclusion. I actually stopped about 50 pages before the end and left it awhile, because I didn't want it to be over too soon... a very high tribute from me! ... Read more

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Porphyria," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Porphyria in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Porphyria when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Porphyria, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Product Description
Porphyrias result from inherited or acquired deficiencies in any one of several enzymes that synthesize heme. When a given enzyme is absent or in short supply, porphyrins are shunted away from heme synthesis into pathways that produce porphyrin by-products. These by-products, in turn, build up in tissues and cause the clinical manifestations of porphyria. In this case report, Dr Rich discusses findings in a patient with porphyria cutanea tarda and provides valuable information for recognizing and treating this disorder. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Acute intermittent porphyria (AIP) is a rare autosomal dominant metabolic disorder affecting the production of heme, the oxygen-binding prosthetic group of hemoglobin. It is characterized by a deficiency of the enzyme porphobilinogen deaminase. Acute intermittent porphyria is the second most common form of porphyria. Under normal circumstances, heme synthesis begins in the mitochondrion, proceeds into the cytoplasm, and finishes back in the mitochondrion. However, without porphobilinogen deaminase, a necessary cytoplasmic enzyme, heme synthesis cannot finish, and the metabolite porphobilinogen accumulates in the cytoplasm. ... Read more

Excerpt:Aminolevulinic acid dehydratase deficiency porphyria (also known as "Doss porphyria," and "Plumboporphyria" ) is a cutaneous condition, disease can present during early childhood (as well as in adulthood) with acute neurologic symptoms that resemble those encountered in acute intermittent porphyria. ALA dehydratase deficiency is a rare cause of hepatic porphyria . It is an autosomal recessive disorder that results from inappropriately low levels of the enzyme ALA dehydratase (ALAD, also called porphobilinogen synthase), which is required for normal heme synthesis. Genetics ALA dehydratase deficiency has an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance . ALA dehydratase deficiency is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. This means a defective gene responsible for the disorder is located on an autosome , and two copies of the defective gene (one inherited from each parent) are required in order to be born with the disorder. The parents of an individual with an autosomal recessive disorder both carry one copy of the defective gene, but usually do not experience any signs or symptoms of the disorder.
