Must have for Management in Diabetes during pregnancy
This comprehensive manual has been a reliable resource for managing Diabetes in Pregnancy.Highlyrecommend for Medical providers, & educators that are involved in patient management, program development and staff training forDiabetes in Pregnancy Programs.

Disappointing and Expensive
While the book provided some good information, I was expecting more judging by the title. (I was also surprised at how small the book was given its cost.) Bottom line? There is much more specific and far more up-to-date information available for free on the internet. A quick search under "diabetes mellitus and pregnancy" will provide a wealth of it, including specific (and current) rates of birth defects at what blood sugar levels and which tests should be conducted during which trimester.

I think the problem may be that it's trying to do too much. The introduction states that the book is designed to "present to the clinician a complete package of protocols."Given some of the very basic information, I hope there are no clinicians who don't know some of this stuff.

The first chapter discusses the fact that it's a good idea to talk to women before conception about the importance of good blood sugar control (does anyone not know that?) and lists the doctors one should see and some of the tests that should be conducted. It basicaly suggests a thorough exam for all the diabetic trouble spots--eyes, kidneys, A1c levels, thyroid, etc. All good sense. However, the second chapter is on contraception, which seems unecessary and out of place.Worse, the first chapter boldly states that if the woman has "clinically proven" cardiac disease, she should not only be counseled against pregnancy, but "should be asked to consider permanent sterilization"(!). No discussion about risk factors or degrees of severity--just any cardiac disease equals sterilization.If the book is only geared toward "clinicians," perhaps that's acceptable. But a discussion of birth control, and a list of what kinds of insulin exist and their duration seems geared toward the completely uninitiated. I found it shocking.

A large problem I had was with the graph of birth defect rates, something I was very, very concerned with. It doesn't seem to be labeled accurately. It says it measures number of spontaneous abortions, major malformations and no major malformations in conjunction with HA1c levels in the first trimester. However, above the HA1c levels it says "Mean + SD (standard deviation)." You can't tell what the SD refers to, and it reports some pretty high numbers. I contacted the ADA (publisher) about this since it suggests that an A1c between 7.7 and 9.3 has fewer incidents of major malformation than an A1c below 7.7. The person I corresponded with was very nice, and told me a few times they would get back to me. They finally said I should check with my doctor if I'm pregnant, which did NOT answer the question. I checked the source material listed at the end of the chapter--this graph is based on information from "reference 13," which was an article published in 1979. I found much more current info on my own with a simple internet check.

There was information about the fact that insulin requirements will increase as the pregnancy progresses, but my doctor has a chart that shows you the typical increases. Further, the book Pumping Insulin has a good chapter on pregnancy and what to expect in dosage increases, diet breakdowns and blood sugar goals pre- and post-meal.

Much of the rest of the book seems like common sense,things you could find in almost any book on pregnancy or in some other book designed for the lay person written from the diabetic's point of view rather than the clinician's.

Overall, I wish someone had steered me toward better information. Given the title, I was expecting it to be sort of a "one-stop shop" where I could get all the factual information I would need. Perhaps I expected too much.

What you REALLY need to know
This is a book for diabetic women planning or in pregnancy. It is very detailed and some of the language may be difficult for the lay person. However it goes into great detail about diabetes managment and reducing the risks of complications in the pregnancy. You will learn more here than in any doctor's office. If you are not medically inclined, get the book, read it then ask your doctor or nurse to explain questions that the book evokes about your situation.

Not Just for Doctors and Nurses!
I am a pregnant diabetic woman with no medical training, and I highly recommend this book to others like me who want some good information on pregnancy and diabetes.It is appropriate for type I, type II, and gestational diabetes.

It has great facts such as a graph of 1st trimester HbA1c's vs. number of congenital malformations and a table with each congenital malformation and the associated factor of increased risk.Those two things right there were worth the price of the book for me.It also serves as a guide for your entire pregnancy from pre-conception through breastfeeding.It explains the tests that should be performed throughout your pregnancy, how your diabetes should be treated during labor and delivery, and how your baby should be treated after he/she is born.

There were a few small downsides to this book.I did not understand about 5% of it, although I was almost always able to get the gist of it.Another 5% was just more information than I needed or wanted.Also, it sometimes gave perfect-world recommendations that didn't seem practical given the real-world limitations of time, money, and the fact that pregnant diabetic women are humans, not machines!

If you want an informational book on pregnancy and diabetes and you aren't scared off by medical terminology, this is the one to get. ... Read more

Kristine, Adam, and Evelyn...my stillbirth baby and the one who came after
In the dark days following the unexpected stillbirth of our son, Adam, I searched for answers, comfort, and reassurance.Through a grief website, I came across this incredible book, and it quickly became a cherished resource.I read it repeatedly as I grieved for my son, drawing comfort and strength from the author's reassuring words as well as the many stories from other women who had travelled this path before me.I continued to read it as we tried again and then walked through our subsequent pregnancy; the latter portion of the book deals extensively with what you'll encounter through each of those three anxious trimesters as you await the birth of your next child.The author writes from a first-hand understanding borne from having experienced the stillbirth of her first child--and the subsequent normal, joyous births of her next 2 sons.Her compassionate understanding touched my aching heart, and the many other women who contributed their stories and words of hope were lights during an incredibly painful time.

OK, not great
It was an alright book to read after we lost our baby at 27 weeks. I thought alot of it was quoted from "Empty Cradle, Broken Heart," so if you've already gotten or read that book I would skip this one.

A must-read for those experiencing Pregnancy After Loss...
I was so incredibly grateful to have this during my second pregnancy.Even though I had gone through a full-term pregnancy before, our first baby died and this book really made me feel like the emotions and concerns I had during my second pregnancy were normal and like I was not alone.I will keep this and read it again if and when I become pregnant again, even though my second child lived.I was also grateful to have "Empty Cradle, Broken Heart" during this most recent pregnancy but also to have pregnancy "bible" - "What to Expect When You're Expecting..." but I made sure to get a new edition as sometimes I found it too emotionally difficult to read my old copy from my first pregnancy.(I was glad to see it had been updated in between my pregnancies.)Those three books made a world of difference to me.

One piece of advice, though.A few people had told me to wait and buy this book AFTER I became pregnant for the second time, apparently thinking it would be too difficult for me to have beforehand or that it might "jinx" my chances of becoming pregnant.I got it as soon as my husband and I decided to try again and I'm so glad I did.I actually wish I had purchased it even sooner as it has information on even deciding when and if to try again.

Very helpful book
This book was so helpful in understanding the complex feelings you experience in a pregnancy after a loss.It captured my experience so well, that I asked friends and family to read parts of certain chapters to better understand my experience.It was helpful to know other women had been through my experience and that I wasn't alone.

Great Resource
I bought this book for my wife who is now pregnant. She (and her also pregnant sister) look something up in here about every other day. It has eased a lot of fears and helped us avoid some risks. As another reviewer mentioned, it could use more information on foods.

Buy the text book - not the kindle version
I have the smaller kindle. The graphs and tables are extremely difficult to read and to navigate once enlarged.

Having said that, this is a wonderful resource for anyone who sees high-risk pregnant women or younger women with cardiovascular disease.It's worth remembering that the pre-menopausal women with cardiovascular disease should have their pregnancy risks and management issues identified before any pregnancy, if at all possible, as well. This book makes that assessment easier as it will point you to the available literature.

This is a clear and well-written resource- particularly valuable given the lack of similar works available in this complex area of medicine.I think a tertiary care facility would be wise to have this text on hand.

A must on your updated bookshelve
A very helpful tool if you are counceling pregnant women in a cardiology department. The chapter on peripartum cardiomyopathy is the best I have ever read.

Extremely Outdated, Poorly Researched, Highly Negative
After two complicated pregnancies involving months of bedrest, I was very excited to find this book to read as I go through my third pregnancy. I was very, very dissappointed.I am a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator with extensive knowledge about pregnancy in general and very specific knowledge about my own two complications: Pregnancy Induced Hypertension and Preterm Labor.In addition to my own interests, I read this whole book hoping to learn more about other complications so that I could help my students who are experiencing these.

There are several things that make this book almost useless:

1.The Research is EXTREMELY outdated.The book, originally published in 1991 claims to have been revised in 1996.However, checking her sources listed in the Bibliography, NONE of them are more recent than the 1980s.In reading the whole book, I realized she obviously didn't update any of her research and the explanations and medical information she gives are so outdated that they are useless at best and possibly harmful at worst [some of the information she gives on Pregnancy Induced Hypertension is not only wrong, it would be dangerous for a pregnant woman to follow her advice]. 10-15 years in the medical field is an *eternity* - things change so fast, new breakthroughs and research happen all the time and a book like this needs to either be kept accurately up to date or removed from publication.

2.Even her original research was bad.She is NOT an medical or scientific person, which could be really good for a book like this [we are looking for a lay person's explanation after all!].However, she obviously had no real medical or scientifically knowledgeable person proof her book.It is full of errors that make it hard to believe anything she writes.For example, in the chapter on "when pregnancy IS perfect" she is discussing normal pregnancy and labor and delivery. She writes:"When the baby's head can be seen through the opening of the vagina, it is called crowning - because it is almost always the crown of the baby's head that emerges first."This is not accurate.Crowning occurs when the largest circumference of the baby's head is emerging through the perineum - when the vagina is stretched the most it will have to stretch.This has nothing to do with when the baby's head can first be seen - which can actually be hours before crowning occurs in some cases, depending on how long the pushing phase lasts.This is not a huge deal, but the book is FULL of little inaccuracies like this - my copy is just covered in highlights where I underlined what she wrote that was wrong.It was very hard for me to take the rest of the book seriously when she made so many very basic errors.Even the word "Foreword" is misspelled on the cover of the book - it is spelled "Forward". Poor editing and not enough scientific understanding plague this whole book in my opinion.

3.The book is extremely negative.The author lost her twin baby daughter soon after birth after a highly complicated pregnancy.She wrote this book as a way of coping with her grief and it shows. The book is very quick to bring up pregnancy loss and neonatal/infant death, often in places where it is innappropriate. I'm afraid that a pregnant woman reading this book would get a very skewed idea of her baby's chances of survival - the reality is that the VAST MAJORITY of complicated pregnancies end with a healthy child and a healthy mother. I think that reading this book would only add undue stress and worry for a pregnant mother in a complicated pregnancy situation, and I myself found the book very upsetting and difficult to read at times.[Even after having two successful healthy births after prior complicated pregnancies]. The reality is that babies do sometimes die. But we don't need to dwell so much on that possibility - we need to acknowledge it, do everything we can to prevent it, and then move on. Brooding over it doesn't help anyone.

What is good about this book? There is an excellent chapter on "Pregnancy Loss:When the Worst Happens". It would be very useful to a couple who had lost a child.However, I would NEVER recommend that a pregnant mother read this chapter unless there were very clear and obvious reasons to believe that her pregnancy was absolutely going to end in death of the baby.For most mothers it would be an exercise in torture - upsetting to the extreme and not likely to be helpful in the majority of cases.

Other than that, I didn't find any positives to this book.I strongly recommend against it and would suggest that a mother experiencing a complicated pregnancy get her information from her doctor and her own research from *reliable* and *up to date* sources.As far as bedrest goes, there is a MUCH better book on this topic. "The Pregnancy Bed Rest Book: A Survival Guide for Expectant Mothers and Their Families" by Amy E. Tracy is EXCELLENT. Buy that one instead. Personally I'm very sorry I spent the money on this book.

It's time for a revision!
This book has some good information, but much of it is now outdated, and no longer accurate.I would hope that there is going to be a reprint soon.This book is no longer the help that it was five years ago.

Too Pessimistic for Women in My Situation
I ordered this book after being put on bedrest for pre-term labor and found the chapter on this subject to be anything BUT encouraging.The author makes it sound like pre-term labor is a death sentence for your unborn baby because of the experience she had, and according to her, there is virtually no hope of having a baby anywhere near term if you have this condition.There are other subjects in the book such as Gestational Diabetes, PIH, etc, which are less drear, and I'm sure they are of help to women experiencing these conditions, but as a whole, I was disappointed with this book.After several chances, I stopped reading this book because of it's bleak outlook on a common pregnancy complication.

Awesome!
This book is a wonderful, comprehensive source of information for many of the complications of pregnancy.Each complication is explained well.I ordered this book and I also ordered the book "Days in Waiting...AGuide to Survive Pregnancy Bedrest." This, too, is a great book, andthe two books are very complimentary.These two books are essential forunderstanding complicated pregnancies, and coping with them, especially ifyou're on bedrest."

This book saved my sanity during my "not perfect" pregnancy
This book fills a need and fills it so well.I read this book early in my pregnancy, although at that time I had no idea I would have a tough time later on.When I developed severe preeclampsia at 31 weeks, I asked myhusband to go to the library right away and get this book back, and fordays I read and re-read this book.Most pregnancy books seem to dismisssevere pregnancy problems as unlikely and too scary to talk much about. This is an excellent book that is well written. It is part of my required books for my certified nurse midwifery program at Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing. I highly recommend it.

Pocket Companion to Accompany Obstetrics: Normal and Problem Pregnancies (Paperback)
I'm a certified-nurse midwife and I love this book.It's pretty much everything that's in the medical text, Obstetrics: Normal and Problem Pregnancies, minus the research data.

It's small and portable and actually a pleasure to read.

I hope there's an updated version coming out soon - this one was published in 2002.

The easier-to-read "Bible" of Obstetrics
There are two texts that are considered the most authoritative on the subject of Obstetrics.Williams is edited by the staff at Parkland, the largest Obstetric hospital in the U.S. and not surprisingly, they consider their text to be "the premier source for the specialty". Williams is also academically dry.

Gabbe, by comparison, is easier to read and covers essentially the same material.This text is written in a way that that I feel you don't have to be an OB Geek to follow the various points. This is NOT to say that Gabbe is "OB for Dummies" or a cliff-notes version of an OB text: As Department Head of OB/GYN at a Major Hospital, I find Gabbe both authoritative and complete.

Cutting to the chase: Gabbe is easier to read than Williams, and if you need info more in-depth, you should already be a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology anyway (or at least a junior fellow), which means that you're accessing the ACOG website on-line anyway. ... Good book
My wife, who was on bed rest for 10 weeks due to pre-mature labor, felt this book really helped her cope. The chapters that I've read also helped me.

One issue that confused me though:
The authors consider 40 weeks to be full term. Others consider it to be 37 weeks.

What I wish I knew before I got pregnant.
My son was born prematurely June 10, 2004.My 30 week ultrasound came back showing that my ambionic fluid was low and my baby only weighed 2 lbs. 7 ounces.The next day I was sent by my OB/GYN to meet with a perinatologist.Within 15 minutes of meeting the specialist, I was told my baby would be born witihin 24 to 48 hours and was admitted to the hospital 30 minutes later.My son was born via emergency csection 27 hours later.I was 31 weeks into my pregancy.He will spend 9 weeks in neonatal ICU before he can come home.This so far, has been the hardest and most heartbreaking part of my entire pregnancy.

I am 30 years old and was diagnosed with chronic high blood pressure two years ago. This book is a step by step account of what happened to me.I developed pregnancy induced hypertension which turned into preeclampsia.None of my doctors (family practicioner or OB/GYN) told me how dangerous and high risk my pregnancy would be.I wish I knew then what this book has taught me now, it has been a real eyeopener and lifesaver.

essential for (expecting) preemie-parents
Upon hearing you're pregnant, most people will only have images of perfect babies. When hearing something is going wrong with your pregnancy, most people have no idea what to expect.
When I heared I was going to have my baby within half an hour, at 26 weeks of pregnancy...I had no idea what was laying ahead of me.
This book prepares you on what to expect when you have a high-risk pregnancy and takes you trough the 24 hours after delivery, your preemies growth and maturation, the neonatal unit, bringing your baby home and later-life development.There is also a part on babies with special needs and a part about when things go wrong.
From the many lonely hours I could not be with my baby, I spent many reading this book.The stories of other parents helped me survivng the nicu and the many charts and statistics helped me to get an image on what to expect.

The book for a high risk pregnancy and the NICU
A very helpful book for reading during your high-risk pregnancy and when your baby is in the NICU.I did think that the anecdotes about women's experiences with terbutaline and magnesium sulfate were unnecessarily alarming.This book complemented Linden's Essential Guide for Parnets of Premature Babies nicely.

Helpful beyond words
This is THE book I wished I'd known about in advance when we developed problems later in my pregnancy.I actually think anyone expecting a baby where there is a possibility of it becoming a high-risk pregnancy (and face it, that could be any of us, right?) should read this book so that you can be prepared to be the best possible advocate for yourself and your child in the NICU and during the transition out.It will also help you understand the complexities of what goes on in the NICU so you can work well with the staff caring for your infant. ...
