Product Description

Androgens are critical regulators of prostate differentiation and function, as well as prostate cancer growth and survival. Therefore, androgen ablation is the preferred systemic treatment for disseminated prostate cancer. Androgen action is exerted in target tissues via binding the androgen receptor (AR), a nuclear receptor transcription factor.

Historically, the gene expression program mediated by the AR has been poorly understood. However, recent gene expression profiling and more traditional single-gene characterization studies have revealed many androgen-regulated genes that are important mediators of androgen action in both normal and malignant prostate tissue. This book will focus on the androgen-regulated gene expression program, and examine how recently identified androgen-regulated genes are likely to contribute to the development and progression of prostate cancer. Recent studies that have attempted to unravel how these genes are deregulated in androgen depletion independent prostate cancer will be included

4-0 out of 5 stars And so it goes
This book provides an extensive overview of the treatment options for prostate cancer. It cleared up a number of misunderstandings which I had.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best for seed implant understanding, plus more
This book is the best I've seen on seed implant therapy, enabling patients to understand it, and answering questions. That's not surprising as the editors, who also co-author several chapters, are among the national leaders in implementing and researching this technology. The book also takes a comprehensive look at other therapies, with leading doctors contributing. Its viewpoint and language are patient-friendly.However, there are a few areas where the coverage is thin.As veteran of intermittent triple androgen deprivation, now a five year survivor, I would have liked more on blockade as a pre-and post-therapy booster, mentioning tradeoff decision tools like the Kattan nomogram from Memorial Sloan Kettering. While Proscar was described as sometimes causing ED problems, the book did not mention that usually it does not, even increasing testosterone often when used without the heavy-duty blockade drugs. The book does not mention blockade as primary therapy, but this is understandable as that has not yet been extensively documented.A good chapter on nutrition and supplements does not note several sobering, cautionary studies on use of flaxseed oil.It also effectively brushes off selenium, omitting persuasive evidence of safety at 200 mcg, and not noting that large areas of the country are deficient in this key nutrient. It does not capture late-breaking studies that have further emphasized the role of lycopene, likely due to press deadlines. However, these are relatively minor matters for a book that will be a great help to many patients and their supporters.I would strongly recommend this book, especially the chapters on seeds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for anyone diagnosed with Prostate Cancer
While this book covers all aspects of prostate cancer, it focusses heavily on seed implantation. Its a great resource for this. I've been treated by one of the authors in Seattle. This book can help you evaluate different treatment options with the up-to-date facts.

5-0 out of 5 stars HereareAnswers to Most Questions about Prostate Cancer
I wish this book had been available when I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2003.Like many men who suddenly learn they have prostate cancer, I had a thousand questions and spent countless hours searching the Internet and libraries for some answers. This newly-published guide will greatly reduce the emotional turmoil of men (and their loved ones) who are anxiously seeking information about prostate cancer and the choice of treatments to fight this life-threatening disease.
This book has a unique question-and-answer format. The questions -- from patients just like me -- are answered by nearly two dozen doctors from all across the U.S. who are experienced, up-to-date experts in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. This impressive 224-page compilation is the creation of the Drs. Peter Grimm (no relation), John Blasko, and John Sylvester, principal physicians at the renown Seattle Prostate Institute, and pioneers of radioactive seed implants to combat prostate cancer. All the basics are covered in this book -- from PSAs to prostate biopsies -- as well as side-effects such as incontinence and sexual dysfunction during and after the various treatments, whether surgical removal, radiation, or hormone therapy.Especially welcome (and difficult to find elsewhere) is information about the effects of certain vitamins, dietary supplements, and foods on the prostate in regard to cancer.A brief but very worthwhile chapter deals with the ways wives or partners can assist their men who are fighting prostate cancer. Also valuable in helping you find the best physician to treat you is a chapter entitled "What Should I Ask My Doctor?"Data from scientific studies is included where meaningful, but you are not overwhelmed by statistics (which soon become dated because of ongoing improvements in prostate cancer treatments). This is the ideal and easy-to-read "first" book for any man who learns he has prostate cancer. It's also perfect for anyone seeking information who is a family member one or knows someone with prostate cancer. Also, I've personally found it of great use for knowing what to anticipate in the months and years ahead after my recent (and, so far, successful) treatment for prostate cancer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Book of Empowerment
Beating Prostate Cancer (Hormonal Therapy & Diet, 1)

"The Book Beating Prostate Cancer" by Dr. Charles Snuffy Myers" is a must read for all prostate cancer patients as well as though who wish to avoid the disease. My husband is fortunate enough to be a patient of Dr. Myers but for those who are not, this is a book of knowledge and personal empowerment. Dr. Myers is an internationally renowned oncologist and clinical researcher whose own battle with prostate cancer is a living testimony of his teachings and convictions. His writing is indicative of his bed side manner: gentle, warm, caring, uncomplicated and engaging.

An initial diagnosis of cancer or a recurrence is frightening enough for any patient and their loved ones. If the patient and their spouse or advocate are vigilant in seeking opinions and knowledge, they will confront complex testing procedures, confusing terminology, and will be prescribed only conventional treatment options. Our collective experience has been that physicians are often siloed by their discipline and their opinions are at time biased and "singular" in an approach to the disease. The radiologist, or surgeon or medical oncologist, although experts, do not provide a consolidated analysis or a multidisciplinary treatment approach. It is difficult for the patient to gain perspective and to conclude what the proper decision may be for their treatment.

Dr. Myers is a "treatment architect" and his representation of all the disciplines, in concert with disease stages and prognosis are clearly presented in an uncomplicated and concise manner. It is very similar to his in-person style and delivery. He simplifies the text for thelayman, while encouraging and empowering his patients to maintain a state of health and possible remission. Heteaches and advocates the "mediterranean diet" and makes recommendations to ingest vitamin supplements and antioxidants. He utilizes both conventional treatments in concert with alternative treatments, all which are predicated on on-going medical research. Succinctly, by choosing a healthy life style patients can keep the immune system strong and create a body chemistry that literally starves cancer cells.

This quick reading book should be kept bedside or close at hand to garner the day to day encouragement so often needed and for easy accessibily to guidance and knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review: Beating Prostate Cancer (Hormonal Therapy & Diet) by MD Charles "Snuffy" Myers
As an 8 year survivor I had the good fortune to be treated to one of Dr. Myers lectures at the time my initial radiation therapy failed. This lead to seeking his assistance on my case resulting in his supervising my triple blockade hormone therapy.

His new book is an excellent representation of his skill in the medical oncology field and highlights his ability to communicate in lay terms, the logic behind hormone therapy. He goes beyond "pills" and helps build a lifestyle of diet and exercise to make survival worthwhile. His advise is especially meaningful as he is also a survivor and fully appreciates what the patient is experiencing

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Valuable Reading for Living with My Prostate Cancer
Dr. Charles "Snuffy" Myers has once again made an enormous contribution to those of us living with prostate cancer. What I appreciate the most about this book is his very thorough descriptions of all aspects of hormone therapy. He understands and is able to communicate effectively that cancer is a systemic disease and provides speicific information about how life style and diet are just as critical as medical treatment. He carefully follows the research and studies related to prostate cancer, including the nutritional research, and digests this information for the lay reader. This book has been most helpful to me as I continue my fifteen year journey of understanding and living with my prostate cancer. ... Product Description
What foods should you eat if you want to keep your prostate healthy? How does sexual activity affect the health of your prostate? What are ways you can prevent prostate cancer? What should African-American men know about prostate cancer? What are the best alternatives to radiation and surgery in treating prostate cancer? What are the symptoms of an unhealthy prostate?

These are some of the many important questions that are answered by Dr. Daniel W. Nixon, one of America's premier cancer research institute leaders, and Dr. Max Gomez, the charismatic health commentator whose reports are aired on NBC television stations nationwide. The authors not only provide indispensable guidance in cancer prevention but also offer a dynamic, new noninvasive treatment of prostate cancer. Packed with information, The Prostate Health Program explains in clear, simple language the link between obesity and prostate cancer, the difference between an enlarged prostate and a diseased one, the causes of frequent urination and pain, and the specific prostate problems pertaining to gay men.

Drs. Nixon and Gomez offer a user-friendly plan of diet, exercise, and behavioral change that men can easily incorporate into their lives. The authors explain why aggressive treatment, such as radiation and surgery, is often unnecessary, less effective, and more dangerous -- often leaving men incontinent and impotent -- than other treatments.

The cornerstones of this unique program are the Prostate Health Pyramid and the Transition Diet, both of which were created specifically for this book and are the ultimate tools in prostate cancer prevention, control, and treatment. First, the foods that protect the health of the prostate are identified; then, food changes are introduced slowly for more effective and long-lasting reform of eating habits. Best of all, quick and easy recipes created by chefs at the Culinary Institute of America provide a menu that is healthy and delicious.

With its combination of cutting-edge research and highly respected, world-renowned authors, The Prostate Health Program is the definitive defense against a deadly disease. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "When you've got your health you've got just about everything".
You know you are getting older when your friends greet you by saying "How are you doin?', How's your prostate?" Drs. Nixon and Gomez believe it is time for men to get serious about paying attention to their prostate glands.

In this book you will get the critical information that can help you help guard your health. This is first and foremost the best "preventive" medical book out on this subject.

Diet, that hideous four letter word, is front and center in preventing prostate problems (including cancer).Yes, it is about eating good foods that will protect your health. You will learn how to do a `drive by' fingering (middle index) to the fat-laden, concentrated fast food joints. The doctors first give you reasons why you need to change your eating, (Duh.You're going to die a painful death if you don't) and then they pile on the menus and recipes that you can try.

This book promotes a "take charge" of your life message and then gives you a step by step, systematic guide. To quote the doctors, "The vast majority of cancer doesn't just happen, we do it to ourselves."

This informative guide is extremely well written and easy to understand. The sections on understanding your prostate and the prostate check are worth the price of the book alone. The chapter on prostate cancer and treatments are very good.If you have prostate cancer then this book, along with "Dr. Peter Scardiono's Prostate Book", will help you through this difficult time.Get them both.Highly Recommended,

5-0 out of 5 stars Men should read this
Concerned about an enlarging prostate, I read about Doctor Lee Nelson MD and his book in our local Sunday newspaper, and was determined to get a copy to read. The book was not available in Australia, so I looked to Amazon.com to source a copy.
I was most impressed with Nelson'streatise on what has become a major problem for many men as they age, and in many cases, take little interest in their personal health until their prostate problems have reached an advanced state. He divides the subject into 3 main parts - What is Prostate Cancer; Treatments;and New & Future Developments. Each section is dealt with in easy-to-follow language, even though technical descriptions are used.
I felt quite comfortable reading the material, taking notes so that if and when I need to consult a specialist, I have an informed view of what questions I need to ask and a clearer picture of the terms likely to be used in the consultation process. The 'Treatment' section in particular was most informative and valuable.
Included is a balanced discussion of complimentary herbal remedies for those who may wish to go down that path.
No particular treatment was pushed - rather one is left to draw one's own conclusions, and to balance them in conjunction with any professional advice.
In conclusion, a book well worth buying, particularly those sold atsecond hand prices. I purchased extra copies to give to my friends, and to my local GP.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent summary of the available medical literature
Motivated in part by his own experience with Prostate Cancer, Dr. Lee Nelson set out to find the best studies on the disease in order to see if there were lifestyle or nutritional changes he could make that could help prevent or cure the disease.

The first part of the book explains the disease and the many treatments that are available. For a newly diagnosed patient, this is invaluable in helping to make a good choice from what may be a confusing array of treatment choices.Dr. Nelson names the studies involved, so the reader can do further research if they wish, but many readers will be satisfied with the summaries of the outcomes that he provides.

Much of the second half of the book looks at nutrition and antioxidants and their role in either prevention, cause or help in treatment. What I appreciate most about Dr. Nelson's approach is that it is not agenda driven - he has no particular ax to grind in terms of what he thinks you "should" or "shouldn't" eat - he simply looks at the studies that have been done, and gives his opinion. He also tells what he himself eats, and what foods supplements he uses - and those he avoids. In Appendix III he then lists the foods associated with the nutrients, since he believes it's better to get your nutrients from foods wherever possible. Some of these results might surprise you.If you don't read the book I'll give the three-second summary of what I took away from the book.Eat soy, drink green tea (a lot), eat tomato products (a lot) and eat artichokes.Avoid milk (especially skim) and calcium supplements and get a little sun. These don't even begin to cover all the valuable information in the book however.

I highly recommend this book, and believe many people would find it valuable for the nutritional information alone, even if they don't have Prostate Cancer but wish to prevent it - and for those who have the disease, it's another source of unbiased information from a survior who is an M.D., to help you in your fight against the disease. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wallner's book
This is by far the best book on prostate cancer for patients, along with Kent Wallner's book for physician's "Prostate Brachytherapy Made Complicated".Kent has an amazing way of presenting very complicated, scientific material in a straight forward, easy to understand way.I personaly give all my patients a copy of Kent's book to help them understand their disease process, and treatment options.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Helpful Book With Some Weaknesses
It is important to realize that the author is a radiation oncologist who is writing with a biased point of view. He does manage, however, to give the reader a fairly balanced overview in spite of his background and training.

Wallner makes an attempt to write a thorough review of the subject in a readable style. The weakest part of the book is the coverage given to the side effects of radiation treatment. Wallner clearly understates this important consequence. Another shortfall is that not enough space is given to a comparison of the disease-free suvival statistics between surgery and radiation. Anyone considering treatment needs to know the disease-free survival records of patients with different stages of disease under all of the major treatment options.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Prostate Cancer Alternative Treatments

At age 53, I was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. It was in June 2005 that my PSA was 23.5 with a Gleason of 7. All 12 cores of the biopsy had cancer, 2 up to 75%. I knew action had to be taken, but what would I choose? Based on the current trend in medicine, I decided to go the holistic route. My research concluded that I had over 95% probability of recurrence. Therefore, in my use of holistic treatment, in conjunction with traditional treatment I got tremendous results. But sadly 9 months after treatment all signs indicated my cancer was back. I was able to discover a holistic treatment that reduced my PSA 100%. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Advanced Prostate Cancer and Me
This would serve as an excellent resource for those looking for alternative treatments to help fight prostate cancer. The book is very short - only about 40 pages of it are actual content, and the rest of the book contains copies of articles. Through this book, Mr. Goldstone shares his struggle and journey from beginning to end; including how he learned he had cancer, and all of the drugs and therapies that he tried along the way.I would have given this book three and a half stars, if that had been an option.I would take off a half of a star for the grammatical errors throughout the book, another half for lack of content, and the last half for lack of research to support his ideas and strategies to fight cancer. But it does not seem that it was the author's intent to present a scholarly work on advanced prostate cancer, but rather to share his journey with the hope of helping others. If you, or someone close to you has prostate cancer, then I highly recommend this book. ... This is a 'must read' for anyone interested in prostate cancer, especially those contemplating surgery.Horan makes the argument that, once detected, prostate cancer cells are already outside the gland or metastatic. What matters is just how malignant a particular variety is.The bottom line is that one must have faith in and full discussion with one's Urologist. This book helps you to be an informed consumer participant in your health care.A bonus is his reference to medical philosophy from ancient times.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Important Book
This book is a must-read if you have been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Following its advice just might preserve your quality of life--and possibly even save your life. As Dr. Horan so eloquently illustrates, the business of prostate cancer is largely just that--a business and an industry. As The New York Times pointed out in an article recently, this is not only a business, it is big, BIG business. The industry's products range from the $25-a-pop PSA test that can add $10,000 a year in income to a doctor's practice, to the $2500 biopsy, to the $25,000 surgery and/or radiation "options," to the ultimate in prostate cancer treatment--the proton beam generator that is the size of two football fields and costs $100,000 to play. According to the Times article, prostate cancer treatment is one of the two or three things that are leading the way in driving up the cost of health care in the United States right now. Apparently it is completely out of control.

I have read a dozen or so books on prostate cancer and, with the exception of this one, most of them are selling something--one form or another of radical treatment. Celebrity urologists/surgeons/authors (with their celebrity patients) have a lot at stake in preserving the status quo. So do the big university hospitals, the pharmaceutical companies, and the labs that process all those test results. Most of these books downplay the often disastrous side effects of surgery and radiation. But even more dishonestly, what they don't tell you is that more often than not the treatments are entirely unnecessary. As my 90-year-old uncle (and retired doctor) once told me, most men will die WITH prostate but not FROM it. He's known he has prostate cancer for 25 years now and he simply watches it. Same with my 89-year-old father. Both men are still very active.

Dr. Horan, a 70-something practicing urologist in California, blows the whistle on this big business. From what I've gathered from Googling and YouTubing, he apparently became alarmed about this over-treatment several years ago and reached out to some of his colleagues in the New York City-based House of Medicine, to borrow a phrase from another excellent book, "Hippocrates' Shadow." He was ignored.

I'll leave it to other more competent reviewers to expound on the actual content of this book. All I want to say is that I read it with a highlighter--and almost every page is marked up. This is an important book. I do have a few complaints, though. While much of the book is written in easy-to-understand language, Dr. Horan frequently slips into using too many big words. I'm a reasonably well-educated person, but I often had to refer to a dictionary while reading it. It also would be helpful if the book had an index. Finally, my overall impression is that Dr. Horan (or his publisher) couldn't decide who the book's audience should be--the layperson, or all of those people in the medical establishment that he is bucking up against. Much of the book is just too darned scientific and technical for the average lay person. So if I could only give it four and a half stars, I would. But this is too important a book to only give it four stars.

One last point. Prostate cancer can indeed be serious. Tens of thousands of men die of it every year. So I don't want to make light of it. But more often than not, most of those men were diagnosed earlier in their lives--not in their 60s and 70s which is where the "epidemic" is happening today. ... Read more

Product Description
Following in the footsteps of his #1 bestseller, The Breast Cancer Prevention Diet Dr. Bob Arnot returns with a nutrition plan to arm men against prostate cancer, the number one cancer among men. The silence that once shrouded prostate cancer has been broken, and millions of men and their families are now aware of how common this deadly disease is and how unpleasant the consequences of treatment can be. Now, Dr. Bob Arnot presents a new, nutritionally based plan for heading off prostate cancer before it strikes or has a chance to do serious harm. Based on the latest cutting-edge research, The Prostate Cancer Protection Plan is customized for men with a normal PSA (the standard screening test), men with a rising PSA, and men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Once again Dr. Bob leads the crusade to empower people with the information that can protect their health and save their lives. As chief medical correspondent at NBC, Arnot is one of the most famous and trusted names in medical information. He appears regularly on Today and Dateline. The Breast Cancer Prevention Diet continues to be affirmed by the latest medical research.Amazon.com Review
Prostate cancer killed more than 37,000 men in the U.S. in1999, and it gets ahold of men early and often. According to autopsyreports, about 25 percent of men in their 30s have latent prostatetumors, as do more than half of men in their 60s.

However, saysNBC News Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Bob Arnot, research isbeginning to show that this is a cancer that can be prevented or evenreversed by dietary changes. The first key, he writes, is soy. Americaproduces a lot but Americans eat very little. In countries in whichsoy is a dietary staple, men get prostate cancer at a fraction of theU.S. rate. (A second benefit of soy, says Arnot, is a highconcentration of the amino acid tyrosine, which helps keep youalert.)

Dr. Arnot lays out a dietary plan that includes lots ofsoy, along with antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables. Notcoincidentally, this is also a low-fat, heart-healthy diet. Dr. Arnotsays that many men are simultaneously at risk for heart disease andprostate cancer; diets rich in saturated animal fats tend to triggerboth conditions.

Another benefit of Dr. Arnot's plan is that itprevents breast cancer, too, giving couples a powerful incentive tomake the extreme dietary changes necessary to prevent thesehis-and-hers killers. And with or without the spousal incentive,Dr. Arnot says his experience with his own plan shows that men willlose weight, increase energy, and lower stress--a few valuable perksto take along on that longer, healthier life. --Lou Schuler ... 5-0 out of 5 stars PSA Rising?
An excellent first book for readers who have their PSA rising.Reading is very helpful for prevention and for those with cancer recurrance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to prevent and treat prostate cancer
I am a family nurse practitioner. I found the book to be very clear and comprehensive. If you're male and over 40, this is required reading!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great on nutrition but biased & simplistic re: surgery
This book is entertainingly and enthusiastically written and gives excellent information on how to eat to avoid prostate cancer or counteract prostate cancer--help slow or stop its growth--once you have it.I was apalled, however, at how Arnot started his chapter on "surgery," describing two groups of couples in which the men had prostate cancer. The one, happy giggling group was composed of couples where the decision was to "watch and wait" regarding the prostate cancer--in other words, not have radiation or surgery for the present. In the other group, the men had had surgery within the previous year and "These men appeared morose, even depressed. Many complained of the need to wear diapers.Months after the operation, many no longer had any sex life at all."

This picture is biased, black-and-white, unrealistic and I believe cruel to people who are trying to decide what to do about prostate cancer. Surgery IS the gold standard treatment for younger men with cancer detected early--men who might die prematurely and very painfully if they did not have surgery, which has a better than 90 percent chance of curing them. And certainly men like Bob Dole, General Schwarzkopf and thousands of others who had surgery are not morose and feeling as if their lives are over--in fact they probably feel a lot better than the 30 percent of those who watch and wait and after ten years have cancer spreading throughout their bodies.

People have to make their choices as best they can, and both watchful waiting and surgery can be appropriate. Arnot's description painting surgery as totally black was neither good journalism nor good medicine, and as the wife of a 59-year-old-man who will probably have surgery, I did not appreciate the depiction.Less than 8 percent(some say 2 pwercent) of men wear diapers after recovery from surgery and all who have surgery are certainly NOT MOROSE compare to all who wait being giddy and happy. For the fifty to thirty percent who cannot have natural erections, there are several good alternatives that will make the penis erect--and the nerves that cost erections DO NOT hinder sensation or orgasm in anyone--men may not get erect but they can feel and have orgasms! Many people take the lemons of this experience and the surgery and make lemonade, glad to be alive and have a chance at a cure.Making a blanket and untrue statement that suggests surgery leads to moroseness is neither helpful, accurate nor true. The next edition of this otherwise very good book should correct that.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most important book you many ever read....
This book could very easily save your life. While it reaffirmed things I know about fiber, insulin, and exercise, it gave me a lot of new information about how to keep from getting prostate cancer (like my fatherhad), and other important information. It also described "insulinresistance", which is something that I have and has baffeled my doctorfor well over a year! Dr. Bob, thanks for writing this great book.

Product Description
Treatment for prostate cancer may involve active surveillance, surgery, radiation therapy including brachytherapy (prostate brachytherapy) and external beam radiation therapy, High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), chemotherapy, cryosurgery, hormonal therapy, or some combination. Which option is best depends on the stage of the disease, the Gleason score, and the PSA level. Other important factors are the man's age, his general health, and his feelings about potential treatments and their possible side-effects. Because all treatments can have significant side-effects, such as erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence, treatment discussions often focus on balancing the goals of therapy with the risks of lifestyle alterations. The selection of treatment options may be a complex decision involving many factors. For example, radical prostatectomy after primary radiation failure is a very technically challenging surgery and may not be an option. This may enter into the treatment decision. If the cancer has spread beyond the prostate, treatment options significantly change, so most doctors that treat prostate cancer use a variety of nomograms to predict the probability of spread. ... Product Description
Prostate cancer is one of the commonest cancers in men in the western world, and the prevalence is rising currently due to improvements in screening and treatment. Serum PSA represents a useful marker of disease. It has frequently a long natural history, creating the opportunities for multiple sequential therapeutic interventions. For patients with high risk local disease or with metastases, endocrine therapy is central to management. Hormone ablation has long been the mainstay of endocrine therapy in this group of patients, though anti-androgens, oestrogens, and corticosteroids can also cause remissions. In recent years effective and well-tolerated chemotherapy regimens have been developed and evaluated. Docetaxel has an established role, and a range of biologically-targeted agents are in development.

The dominant pattern of metastatic spread is to the axial skeleton and most symptomatic care is directed to palliation of bone pain. The role of bisphosphonates remains controversial, but bone-directed isotopes such as Strontium-89 are effective.

Part of the Oxford Oncology Library, this pocketbook summarizes the up-to-date information on the use of systemic therapies in the management of prostate cancer (early stage, metastatic disease, and treatment of "biochemical" recurrence). With contributions from leading oncologists from both Europe and the USA, the book provides a practical guide to the range of endocrine and cytotoxic therapies currently available to clinicians, as well as to other palliative anticancer strategies, and will be valuable to all health professionals involved in the management of patients with prostate cancer. ... Product Description
Sometimes a woman just needs to hear certain things from another woman. And one of those times is when your husband may have prostate cancer.

When author Lynne Rosenberg, a registered nurse and wife of a medical doctor, began to research this disease after her husband Mark was diagnosed, she found very little useful information about the day-to-day decisions and difficulties they would face. Scrambling to decipher test results, procedures, medications, and side effects, she discovered that each woman faces this process as if facing uncharted territory.

Prostate cancer involves the physical and mental mechanisms that in some ways define both masculinity and intimacy, and Rosenberg confronts these subjects with refreshing frankness. After devoting more than a year to her husband’s illness, treatment, and recovery, she has organized her experience into a readable and rational discussion that can help prepare women to deal with everything for which she herself had no preparation.

While not intended to replace the doctor, nurse, or counselor in the management of this disease, A Crash Course on Prostate Cancer: From One Woman’s Perspective will provide you with the support that only another woman can give.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Presentation of Prostate Cancer Options
This book is a great source for clarifying prostate cancer issues and the available treatment choices available.Highly recommend reading prior to making a tratment choice....it's your life....your decision.

4-0 out of 5 stars Prostate Cancer Radiation Treatment
I found this book to be very helpful in examining the pros/cons of various radiation treatments for prostate cancer, as opposed to surgery. While the book is decidedly biased for radiation treatment, I found that the statistical data was rather weak in supporting the argument, especially for longer term results beyond 12 years after treatment. However, this may be a result of the lack of data for the medical field as a whole since I also have not found very much information in this regard for surgery as well. The book has both the doctor's viewpoint, a patient viewpoint, and that of a treatment nurse, who specializes in after-treatment care, including diet. The diet/nutrition/supplement section was very useful. Last, the copyright is 2005, and many advances have been made since then that are, naturally, not in the book. For example, the book describes radiation beam treatment as requiring a body mold to be made of the patient so that when the patient returns every day for the 2 months of radiation treatment, the radiation beams can be aimed at the prostate in the exact same manner/position day after day. Now this technique is outdated. UCLA medical center implants gold seeds in the prostate and simply uses computer software adjustments every day for treatment, to register accurately the prostate location. Therefore, the book gives a good foundation of techniques, but there is no substitute to seeking advice from medical professionals. If you are considering treatment, read this book first, and also read Dr. Peter Scardino's book on Prostate Cancer, then seek out opinions from respected doctors in both surgery (Urologists) and radiation (Radiaton Oncologists).

3-0 out of 5 stars Depending Upon Your Diagnosis, Keep an Open Mind
Although technically well done, radiation therapy may not be the answer or at least the whole answer to prostate cancer treatment and survival. You will need to consult a number of current references on the broad subject of prostate cancer, as well as critically surf the Internet.Keep in mind that advances in treatment continue to offer hope.

A thorough and accurate diagnosis is essential to your understanding of what the best course of treatment may be given your age, PSA, Gleason Score, tumor type and stage (metastasis), etc.It is also essential that you discuss your options with your urologist, oncologist, radiologist and surgeon, each of whom may have different recommendations or options depending upon your choice of how you want to live and survive.

I have advanced prostate cancer [initially a PSA of 19.8, Gleason of 9, and (at least) local lymph node metastasis].My cancer is presently undetectable (i.e., not hormone therapy refractive), and I just celebrated my 5th anniversary post-surgery.My choices, based on the severity of my cancer, included all recommended treatments available to me at the time, namely radical prostatectomy, external beam radiation and hormone ablation therapy.Recent studies have validated those three aggressive treatment regimens for advanced prostate cancer survival.

The side effects of those treatments were very troublesome for the first two years post-surgery.With additional medication for the menopausal-like symptoms (nausea, hot flashes, etc.) and bone calcium depletion effects (osteoporosis), I've been able to adjust to some of them. So, as you may see, the answers may be very different for each of us.Best wishes.

1-0 out of 5 stars a truly biased view
Dr. Dattoli touts brachytherapy above all else, even though studies have shown that surgery offers surer long-term results, important especially for younger men who don't want their cancer to recur down the road.Seed implants can leave areas of the gland undertreated. Also, the idea that radiation causes fewer side effects is bogus. In fact, in addition to urinary and erectile problems, men getting radiation in any form run the risk of bowel problems.

2-0 out of 5 stars Comments on Surviving Prostate Cancer without surgery
The book suffers from a rhetorical bias against surgery -- a bias that leads to little good being said about surgery.A study reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association concluded that if you see a surgeon about treatment options he/she will likely represent surgery; if you initially see a radiologist, the recommendation is likely to be radiation.

As other reviewers have pointed out, a man facing treatment options must determine if surgery that is right for him.IMRT/seeds is a great approach but many patients aren't eligible due to the progression of the cancer.Similarly, expansion of the cancer beyond the prostate gland may mean that surgery is not feasible. But surgery is, in my experience, one of the best options for a T2a or T2b diagnosis.Obviously much depends on the skill of the surgeon but if the surgeon manages to excise all the cancerous tissue, you will be in great shape re recurrence of cancer. The same cannot be said about hormone therapy.

I would make two points about surgery versus other options (all the while emphasizing that the best option depends on the state of your cancer).First, I found that men facing the treatment decision often recoil in horror at the idea of being cut open, nerve bundles being severed and a Foley catheter in their penis for two or three weeks.A tough call. But remind yourself that once the surgery is over and the catheter is out, you are done.Hopefully the surgeon will save enough nerve bundles that you will be able to function sexually, with a little help from the blue pill.I had the surgery and have not taken one bit of medication or treatment since.Luckily for me, the surgeon got it all and my PSA remains zero. You will also have the psychological relief of knowing that the cancerous object is gone from your body. (I was influenced by a certain famous football coach who said, 'as soon as I got the diagnosis I wanted this thing out of me')

Second, surgical techniques are getting better.Robots, cryogenic techniques and other technology are starting to move into the mainstream. Many surgeons have done hundreds of these operations.Success stories are increasing. The same cannot be said of radiation -- it still is likely to devastate surrounding tissue.Hormone therapy can be useful but the patient really needs to talk at length with his doctor about how long the course of treatment will take and the side effects, which can be terrible.

A final bonus re surgery. If it does not succeed, ADT therapy remains an option.

To all prostate patients:evaluate every option carefully and develop a good sense of the prospects for success of each option.Hang in there. ... Read more

Product Description
The impact of advances in medical technologies is beginning to reveal that Prostate Cancer is a much larger problem than the general public perceives. Newer tools for diagnosing tiny microscopic cancer cells in younger men have caused the medical community to recommend that men in their early 40's get a PSA Cancer screen with routine physical exams, instead of waiting until they are in their late 50's, only then to discover cancer is present. The medical community is not doing a good job of communicating that we may be heading for a pandemic if diagnosis and treatment is not routinely conducted in younger and younger men.The Prostate Cancer Primer is the culmination of a research professor's intense effort to:*learn about current options that are available for preventing cancer;*suggestions for understanding what currently available treatment options their are, complete with side-effects;*how to choose which treatment is right for today's health-conscious adult man and his family.Oncologists and urologists interviewed for this Primer are in basic agreement that too little communication exists between the medical community and men who need to know what their prostate options are. This compilation of research is aimed at filling that void, for all men who are interested in living a healthful life. ... Read more
