5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Patients AND Professionals
As a full time Phototherapist in a busy Dermatology practice, I find "The Handbook of Psoriasis; Second Edition", indispendable. After reading Dr. Camisa's book I find myself able to provide better patient care, through an increased insight into the disease that the majority of my patients suffer from. I also highly recommend this book to my patients as a tool through which they can better understand and control their conditon, as it is written in such a manner that both the professional and patient can gather valuable, useful information.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book
As a resident in dermatology, I can strongly recommend this book. It provides concise thorough chapters on many aspects psoriasis, including its different clinical manifestations. Perhaps of most use are the chapters ontreatment which summarise very well how to use the oral immunosupressivemedications, retinoids, tar, light and more. Highly recommended for 1st and2nd years.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent addition to any Dermatologists bookshelf
The Handbook of Psoriasis would make an excellent addition to any Dermatologist's bookshelf. Concise and complete, this reference provides current and pertinent information on all aspects of psoriasis ranging fromclassification and genetics to pathology and treatment. The chapterspertaining to treatment are especially comprehensive and would definitelyassist the clinician in the treatment of this often frustrating illness, regardless of their career level. I was very impressed by the discussion onthe immunosuppressant and retinoid drugs. Nebulous topics in most texts,Camisa eloquently clarifies the most essential factors regarding the use ofthese drugs(critical information that will be valuable not only forpsoriasis but other dermatological disease entities as well). A definite"keeper" of a book which I highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone who call's him/herself a dermatologist
I read the entire book cover to cover in one week, and I will now keep it in my clinic jacket. The content was succinct, thorough, and up to date. The writing style made reading easy, and the format will allow for quick referencing. Finally, there is an affordable, comprehensive source providing clear guidelines for treating complex psoriasis with high risk medications. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars The Psoriasis and Eczema Solution Is A Waste of Your Money
IN MY OPINION:As the mother of a child who suffers greatly from eczema, and who has read a ton on the subject, this book is not worth the paper it is written on.It throws out a few facts and figures about p and e, but probably not more than an actual sufferer would already know.In myopinion, the primary objective of this book was to promote a product calledEXOREX, which I also believe (in my opinion) is not worth the cost of thecontainer it is sold in.

Exorex is explained in the book to contain theessential fatty acids originally derived from bannana and the activeingredient 1% coal tar, and supposedly has a better skin penetratingformula and smell than regular coal tar.

Coal tar alone has been used foryears for the treatment of these conditions, and some would question thesafety of this type of use.I would question the safety of coal tar beingmore deeply absorbed by the body in this supposed new formulation.Also,1% coal tar can be obtained in its own form a heck of a lot cheaper, andwithout the expense of buying this book that plays on the desperation ofthe poor folk who suffer from these conditions.

Finally, eczema andpsoraisis, while both affecting the skin, are two completely separate anddistinct conditions, and don't really seem to me to need to be discussed inone book.

For eczema, I would recommend a book by Dr. Atherton called,Eczema in Childhood - The Facts...good for children and adults alike. ... Read more

Product Description

Psoriasis is an inherited skin disease that has been diagnosed in 4.5 million adults in the United States. About 10 percent to 30 percent of people with psoriasis also develop psoriatic arthritis, which causes pain, stiffness and swelling in and around the joints.

The book reviews the clinical manifestations of these two entities. The main focus is on the evolving paradigm of therapy. Topical and ultraviolet therapy are discussed first, followed by traditional systemic therapy. A major focus is on biologic therapies. New agents in development are also reviewed. The book concludes with an evaluation of the quality of life impact of this disease.

This volume provides an in-depth overview of the current state of psoriasis and its management. It is of interest to clinicians, researchers, and even patients who wish to learn more. It is also of interest to those in the pharmaceutical industry, and those in finance who cover the pharmaceutical field.

This volume deals with the clinical treatment specifics of the variants of the disease, as well as individual treatment modalities. While it should appeal to both the practitioner and academician, the practical information in every chapter provides a strongly clinical emphasis. The first chapters cover the clinical variants of the disease, including studies of pathogenesis. The later chapters discuss the different treatment modalities, reviewing the basic pharmacology or photobiology, proven and theoretical mechanisms of action, and practical management guidelines. Side effects, drug interaction, suggested laboratory studies, and frequency of follow-up visits are also covered. The treatment chapters include case reports from the author's experience at the Cleveland Clinic, chosen to illustrate pitfalls in treatment, adverse reactions, non-compliance and success stories. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent handbook for people with psoriasis ...
This is a small handbook for psoriasis patients, using language that any high school graduate can understand. Numerous illustrations and case summaries help explain what psoriasis is, how it is triggered, and how it can be treated. Each chapter concludes with a list of "Facts to Remember" that highlights do1s and dont1s for the patient.Especially notable is the concluding chapter, "It's Up To You," which encourages the reader to take a pro-active role in controlling the disease. Also notable is the chapter on "Total Care," which emphasizes the importance of each patient1s general health and lifestyle as they relate to his or her psoriasis. As one who has struggled with psoriasis for 35 years, I am especially glad to have so much valuable information summarized in one small book.Even more important, I believe, is the overall message: that we patients are capable of understanding the basics of psoriasis, and with optimism and persistance, can do a great deal to help ourselves. Dermatologists should present this book to every psoriasis patient over 12 years of age, especially in this era of managed care.Three minutes with the doctor and another prescription simply cannot provide the information and encouragement that are so important to psoriasis patients. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Of tremendous interest and value to medical students
In the six separate patient studies comprising Why Do We Fall Ill?: The Story Hiding In The Body, Dr. Luis Chiozza explores the question of how helpful an articulate patient is to the determination of why and how a somatic disorder develops, and the choice and impact of therapeutic options. Why Do We Fall Ill? will prove of tremendous interest and value to medical students, practicing physicians, health care providers, and the non-specialist general reader with an interest in the psychological treatment of "somatic" disorders to improve the outcome of therapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding the body-mind relationship
Following Freud's findings, CHIOZZA pursues the concept of a language ofthe body, that provides a clue for the understanding of the differentdiseases. Once the body language is deciphered, the disease can beunderstood as a means of communication, as well as the expression of thedrama that is suffered by the patient. This book consists of sixinvestigations developed by the Department of Research of the WeizsaeckerMedical Consultation Center, headed by Dr. LUIS CHIOZZA. The book explainsthe method for the psychoanalytic understanding of the patient, and of therole that the disease plays in each particular case. Thus, each patient isseen as a story in which the disease is both the symbol and the shelter ofa drama that unfolds in the malfunctioning of the body.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended. A turning point in somatic ilnesses
This book is excellent. It is a starting point, which is a turning point in the conception of somatic ilnesses. This book gives us the elements tothink of the specific meaning of each somatic disorder. Dr. Chiozza andcolleagues comnicate findings from their many years of research (at theLuis Chiozza Foundation in Argentina) of the hidden affects in somaticdisorders. The authors, following Freud, in an idea that has not beebworked through by psychoanalysts, think that each affect has an"innervation key" - an unconscious affective structure - thatdetermines his specific quality. As Freud said, "supress thedevelopment of a conflictive affect is the true aim of repression".Dr. Chiozza explain that the impossibility of the conscious dischargeaffect motivated by repression promotes the discharge of the cathexisacross one element of the innervation key of each affect. In "somaticilnesses" some elements of an affect's innervation key are moreintensely invested than others. When its innervation key is thus deformed,an affect may be hidden in that it is perceived as a somatic process. It isin this sense that physical disorders are thought of as hidden affects. Theauthor's way in exposing the research of somatic disorders such asheadache, cerebrovascular disease, diabetes, respiratory disorders andasthma, and bone disorders, among others, it's very interesting andappealing. All of them hold to a similar research framework. In eachdisorder, Dr. Chiozza and colleagues detect a specific unconscious fantasy, which enlarges our knowledge of what happens in an ill person. I highlyrecommended this book to psychoanalysts and clinicians, ans perhaps we canreconsider and expand our concepts of the role of psychoanalytical inquiryin the study and inverstigation of somatic disorders. ... If you are an adult with Psoriasis - you know that one of the major suffering is trying to get treatment that is effective and does not create other side effect conditions. Once I was asked to sign a release form for treatment that freed the practitioner from resposibility for thepossibility of my contracting liver cancer. When I refused to sign thenurse told me point blank that if she had my condition she would risk anyillness to get rid of it. This doctor was a well known pioneer of mainstream treatments used today.

Product Description
This econometric study covers the outlook for psoriasis drugs in Africa. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-a-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the countries in Africa). This study gives, however, my estimates for the latent demand, or the P.I.E. for psoriasis drugs in Africa. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided across the national markets of Africa. For each country, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time (positive or negative growth). In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on international strategic planning at graduate schools of business. ... Read more

Product Description
This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a "borderless world", cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market.

In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another.

In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world's major cities for "psoriasis drugs" for the year 2010. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. ... Read more
