This book has become a bible for those suffering from RSI. It explains what to ask your doctor(and why) when you go in for a diagnosis; it also lists more than two dozen types of RSI and relatedconditions, from cervical radiculopathy to reflex sympathetic dysfunction to fibromyalgia. If these termssound intimidating, then the book succeeds in bringing them down to clear, manageable definitions.

Quilter and Pascarelli also delineate the causes of RSI that are often unconsidered, including being obese, typing while cradling the phone with your shoulder, and having long fingernails. They don't discuss manyof the different surgeries used for RSI but instead choose to discuss the various kinds of physical andoccupational therapy treatments; acupuncture; stretching; vitamins and nutrition; relaxation techniques, deep tissue massage, and guided visualization. There's also an extensive list of helpful tricks for adapting toliving with RSI, from making changes in the kitchen to re-learning how to drive.

This is also the RSI book if you're looking for information on the psychological ramifications ofRSI and how to handle both time off from work and the return to the office. Book Description
Repetitive Strain Injury "A wealth of information for people who have repetitive strain injury, for those who want to prevent it, and especially for those who think it doesn't concern them. Every computer user has the potential for repetitive strain injury and should heed the advice in this book." —Caroline Rose, Editor The RSI Network "This is the most useful book I have seen for RSI sufferers. It is refreshing to read a book that takes these injuries seriously and offers sound advice." —Robert Dieterich, Managing Editor VDT News "Easy-to-read, expertly illustrated, and filled with hundreds of commonsense explanations and practical suggestions for those suffering from all types of repetitive strain injuries. The problem is called "Repetitive Strain Injury," or RSI, and includes a wide range of conditions—from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome to Tenosynovitis. 5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book if you are paining at work
This book is easy to read, has good illustrations, symptom descriptions, and suggestions for diagnosis, treatment and prevention.

3-0 out of 5 stars good
I found this to be the best book as far as having pictures to show how to do stretches and on good typing technique.

Other books I would recommend are:

`The Repetitive Strain Handbook by Robert M Simon, MD and Ruth Aleskovsky'.

`The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Clair Davies'

`Living Better Every Patient's Guide to Living with Illness by Carol j. Langenfeld'.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good comprehensive introduction to RSI.
"Repetitive Strain Injury: A Computer User's Guide" by Pascarelli is a good introduction for those who know nothing about RSI. Even a cursory search of the Internet will turn up several references to this book as the classic on the subject. It describes what RSI is, what the risk factors are, how to evaluate your physician in terms of his or her RSI awareness, how to treat RSI symptoms, and it offers tips on workstation configuration, typing and mouse technique, monitor settings, and daily living. If you think you have RSI and your first instinct is to go out and buy yourself a wrist wrest and a splint, stop and read this book first, it explains why these amateurish attempts at self treatment are a bad idea. I was disappointed that the book didn't offer more specific advice for actually treating RSI, though I understand that would have been difficult given the large number of causes and manifestations of the disorder. The book claims on the front cover to contain a "seven point program for treatment", but most of the advice for treatment itself consists of "go see a doctor". This is frustrating given the book's repeated claim that most doctors know nothing about RSI or don't even believe in it in the first place. Another thing that really annoyed me was the book's assertion that employers are largely responsible for RSI. The basic message was: "RSI isn't your fault. It's just another example of how `the Man' exploits you in a thankless and mindless job." In my case, my RSI was caused by my own obsessive work habits. The book does list "Driven Behavior" as a risk factor for RSI, but it gets only a perfunctory mention. Another negative is that the book focuses on tendonitis-type RSI, whereas my problem was clearly nerve-related (numbness, weakness, and lack of coordination in hands, forearms, and upper arms). The book that really nailed my problem on the head, and that I recommend as a supplement to this one if your RSI is caused by obsessive computer use, was "It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome!", by Damany, who worked under Pascarelli treating patients for many years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Straightforward and helpful
This book is the single most useful collection of practical RSI information I've found. Highly recommended for anyone trying to figure out how to stop hurting themselves when they're working. I have bought four copies for friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reader in Ohio
After years of extreme pain caused by ...poor working conditions ..., I ended up disabled. I found this book four years later. In that time, I had seen two M.D.'s, three chiropracters and two orthopedic surgeons.I was diagnosed as having a pinched nerve.

After reading this book, I made an appointment with Dr. Pascarelli.I was the last new patient he took before retiring.

He diagnosed me as having thoracic outlet syndrome, and wrote up a script of physical therapy treatment for me, which I took back to Ohio and showed to the doctor's here.I still live in constant pain because of permanent muscle damage in my upper back because this wasn't diagnosed sooner, but at least the pain is bearable.I also have problems using my arms and hands. But, today I'm partially disabled instead of totally disabled.

Maybe, if one of the doctor's that had examined me before had Dr. Pascarelli's knowledge, I wouldn't be living in pain today.Or, if I had the knowledge this book provides....

If you use a computer, read this book and follow the advice. You don't have to end up living in pain. ... Read more

Book Description

What do a pianist and a grocery checkout clerk have in common with a computer programmer? They continually repeat small hand movements that can cause Repetitive Strain Injury: disabling numbness, tingling or pain, mainly in the hand, wrist, arm, shoulder, and neck. In fact, anyone who spends hours at a computer terminal risks developing carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, and other disorders of the muscle, nerve and tendon! Deborah Quilter, who was diagnosed with RSI in 1991, has assembled the best RSI treatment advice, including:

• techniques to avoid further injury at work and at home
• medical, nonmedical, and natural healing therapies
• tips on dealing with depression and the anxiety of job insecurity
• personal stories of injury and successful rehabilitation

The Repetitive Strain Injury Recovery Book is an effective, inspiring blueprint to choosing the right treatment, managing RSI symptoms, and minimizing flare-ups.

• Over 15 million people have been diagnosed with RSI disorders.
• RSI accounts for over 60% of all work-related ailments.
• A leading health insurance company reported that the average cost of treating one RSI case is $100,000.
• Last December, a jury in a federal district court awarded close to $6 million to three plaintiffs whose RSI was attributed to using the computer manufacturer’s keyboards.
• The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) estimates RSI has increased 800% over the past decade.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, but one piece of important info omitted
Great book, except:

Like many authors of medical self-help books, Quilter urges her readers to enlist competent medical help. Unfortunately, she does not say that although one can find good, knowledgeable physical therapists, it is almost impossible to find an American medical doctor who knows anything about RSI. She does not mention that although it is an official diagnostic category in the UK, Australia and the Netherlands, neither RSI, nor any medical synonyms (i.e. overuse syndrome, cumulative trauma disorder, etc.) appear in American diagnostic guides (although other "controversial" syndromes like Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue syndrome do!)So ... American doctors can not officially "know" about RSI. This also makes it difficult for RSIers to follow Quilter's most important recommendations -- rest and pacing, since we often need medical justification (at least a doctor's note) to get appropriate accomodations at work.

4-0 out of 5 stars good practicaltips for living with an RSI
I disagree with the reviews below, I thought this is a fine book, a good complement to the books "It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome" by Damany and " Conquering Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Other Repetitive Strain Injuries" by Sharon Butler. It's true the latter two have much more on specific exercises to help get you better and I liked the medical information in Damany. However they don't have a lot of practical information on how to cope with your life during the healing process when you can't do a lot of the things you normally do in your daily life. This book fills that gap. It's got lots of practical suggestions of how to do things when you're injured. It's more of broader focus than the other books on the overall changes you need to make beyond the specific exercise program. I would recommed someone with an RSI get all three books as the information is complementary.

2-0 out of 5 stars very dystopic with little concrete information
This is an amazingly dystopic book, absolutely full of horror stories and unhappy endings. There's a chapter on how to have a sex life despite RSI, how to sue for loss of a career, the testimonial of a man who was paralysed from the waist down but found RSI more disabling etc - but nothing concrete about what RSI actually. OK, so now I know that if I have tendonitis I'm more likely to get carpal tunnel syndrome and the rest of them but this book doesn't give me information on what tendonitis (or the others) actually is or how to make much of a change. There are quick mentions of various treatments but there is no discussion of their relative merits. The author tells us about her own exercise program (30-40 minutes a morning with weights and 1 1/2 hours of ballet four times a week plus walking and stretching) but there are no specific exercises that can help you avoid recurrance or assist in healing.

Please also notice that Deborah Quilter is not a medical professional but a health writer who has had RSI herself.

There is a good, explicit (but short) section on how to change your typing which I haven't seen other places.

1-0 out of 5 stars Doomsday scenarios don't help you recover
I read this book because I had severe RSI and wanted to recover. The first thing I read in it was that I had a chronic case and would never recover. This was followed by an avalanche of anecdotes about people who are radically crippled for life. These were intermingled with depressing advice about how to "handle" your newfound, chronic handicap. For example, Quilter says that people with RSI can still work any job, as long as they work at their own pace.So far, so good. Then she says most employers won't let you work at your own pace and goes on to suggest that you must change careers unless you want to do even more permanent damage to yourself.Great, just the kind of upbeat advice I needed to hear.

I suggest that unless you want to scare the pants off of someone who does not take their RSI seriously, you should get the original Pascarelli and Quilter book for overall information and the Damany and Bellis book for a concrete and helpful recovery plan.

2-0 out of 5 stars Emil Pascarelli's book remains the primary work on RSI.
Ms. Quilter's book is good when it comes to advice on selecting a doctor and therapist, and also dealing with the guilt and depression associated with RSI. But I found it enormously lacking in not only the causes of RSI,but of what the specific injuries are and how you can recognize them. EmilPascarelli's work, even though it is now five years old, remains the No. 1source guide for anyone who has RSI. ... Read more

Sharon Butler was working as a massage therapist and Hellerwork practitioner when shedeveloped carpal tunnel syndrome and tendonitis. Unable to sleep through the night because of the pain andconcerned about her livelihood, she built upon her knowledge of connective tissue anddeveloped a series of stretching exercises to gently relieve the tension in her body. After daily stretching inthis way, her pain soon subsided. To prove that these exercises weren't just a fluke, Butler intentionallyoverworked her body to bring back her symptoms. While this may not have been the smartest move, herstretching program again relieved her pain.

The magic behind her powerful exercises is their focus on fascial tissue. Fascia, which is stronger thansteel, holds the body together. It wraps around muscle fibers, bones, and tendons. (If you've ever looked atan uncooked piece of chicken and noticed the glistening white layer over the meat, you've seen fascia.) Inpeople who overwork their bodies, the fascia hardens, a natural response to prevent future injury.Unfortunately, this stiffness worsens with repeated insults to the body. Muscles, nerves, and tendons tenseup and inflame even more and may even adhere to each other. Metabolic waste products can build up andbecome trapped instead of being carried away by the lymph system, and even more pressure is placed onthe affected body tissues.

Enter Butler's exercises. The book is arranged to let you pick and choose the correct stretches to suit yourneeds. Too much typing, guitar playing, or gardening? Stiff neck, tingling fingers, sore upper arms, or allthree? However you developed your repetitive strain injury and whatever your upper-body symptoms (or ifyou're smart and you'd like to prevent such problems), there are multiple stretches in Conquering CarpalTunnel Syndrome to suit your needs. The book is arranged to help users develop a personalizedstretching program with more than 40 stretches for the upper body, forearms, wrists, fingers, and thumbs tochoose from. Butler thoroughly explains the importance of stretching and the correct (and incorrect) way todo it, and the exercises are lucidly illustrated. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book - the stretches work!
I'd only be repeating the praises others have given this book, but I just want to say I highly recommend this book. The stretches are explained clearly and simply and they do work.I've bought this book for friends and when they follow the exercises, they get relief.Another plus, is doing the stretches FEELS so good and it only takes maybe 15 minutes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent set of stretches for large variety of carpal tunnel types
This book was loaned to me at my job as a computer engineer. I had carpal tunnel affecting my wrists & forarm.Excellent, easy stretches which really relieve the pain. I recommended it to a friend who cleans houses for a living, and she was able to stop wearing the arm brace.Great for those tiny, hard to stretch muscles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great self help book!
Excellent guide to conquering several medical pains/problems that most doctors would have to diagnose.

5-0 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL for me, but maybe not just this book...
I have been experimenting with many strategies to get rid of carpal tunnel in my right hand, including learning how to write and do housework with my left hand.I do the exercises for both hands at the same time so that my left hand doesn't develop the same problem. With these exercises
and a hand brace when sleeping, pain at night went away. But if I forget to do the exercises on one day, I pay for it the next day through pain and decreased range of motion so I know they are essential. The carpal tunnel has not all gone away after several months of doing the exercises, however, just improved. Perhaps I need to do them more often.Be careful when you do them - she is not kidding when she says go GENTLY.More force is worse. The other thing that seems to be helping me is pilates.

4-0 out of 5 stars A helpful book for anyone with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
I ordered this book for my wife, who has had Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) in her right wrist for some time. It recently got worse after she fell off her bike and broke a couple of bones in the same wrist. The bones have healed, but the accident somehow increased the CTS symptoms: tingling sensations, numbness and a general increase in CTS aggravation. She has found this book, Conquering CTS, informative and helpful. After reading it and doing the excercises, for about a month now, she has found that not all the exercises suit her particular condition. So, she has, through trial and error, found which excercises in the book are helpful. They work, and help relieve the sypmtoms. So, I would recommend this book to anyone who has CTS. It is not a cure-all, in my wife's case, but it has made a difference. I would buy it, read it, try the exercises and find which ones work best for you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful!!
This book focuses on entrapped median, radial and ulnar nerves: How they get trapped, and what to do about it. Here's a book that explains it better than any hand surgeon or nuerologist will. Also, you'll learn what it is a professional can do for you and what you can do for yourself. This book really explains it all much better than many other books (and I've read many newer ones). I was so happy to get it, I stayed up into the wee hours and devoured it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage of the quiet epidemic of the computer age
An excellent sourcebook covering all aspects of Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) the new epidemic of the technological age. You may have RSI and not even know it, and if you are reading this review you are definitely at risk for it (computer users are particularly at risk). Almost two-thirds of all workplace injuries in the U.S. are caused by it.The author, a newspaper reporter, describes the injury, what causes it, how to recognize if you have it, how to avoid it if you don't yet have it, the various treatments available, and how it is likely to affect your life outside the workplace. To illustrate each chapter, the author has included interviews with RSI victims from across the country. She concludes with a description of her own affliction with RSI, a story that is searing, yet ultimately uplifting. The most important value of this book is not just that it is a comprehensive review of this disease, but even more importantly, that it calls attention to a disease that can be truly thought of as the new plague of the twentieth century, a disease that has so far claimed its victims in silence. What is particularly insidious about RSI is that unlike the other epidemics that afflicted humankind, the contagion is not spread from person to person, but from machine to person, meaning the epidemic will increase just about as fast as our use of computer keyboards increases. Because this epidemic is not transmitted in the way previous epidemics have been, it has remained a silent yet increaing crippler of otherwise healthy and productive adults. The public awareness that will be required to halt the spread of this disease can be found in the pages of this book.I highly recommend it. ... They go by many names--tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, forearm tendinitis--but these injuries all have a common origin: our work and play. Whether it's computer programming, carpentry, food service, or bookkeeping, many jobs today require people to hunch over into unnatural positions and then perform the same tiny movements over and over again throughout a workday. And the sports we pursue often aren't much better--tennis, golf, and racquetball all involve repeated elbow- and back-straining movements.

The solution, author Timothy Jameson says, is not to exclude any potential treatment: medication, physical therapy, massage, chiropractic care, or acupuncture. A problem like carpal tunnel syndrome could be rooted in multiple factors--occupation, weight, stress, disease (including diabetes), previous injuries--and, chances are, no one discipline can find and treat all of them. Jameson also recommends making dietary changes, shifting to a Zone-type diet of 40 percent carbohydrates, 30 percent protein, and 30 percent fat, mostly from unsaturated or polyunsaturated sources.

Repetitive Strain Injuries is about as user-friendly and complete a book as one can imagine. For example, early in the book, Jameson includes anatomical charts pinpointing areas of pain or abnormal sensations, and shows which chapters to turn to for information about them. Also helpful is the menu of alternative treatments, from chiropractic care to lesser-known movement techniques such as Feldenkrais, and biofeedback and guided imagery. --Lou Schuler ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars No good
Since I got RSI myself, I've read a number of books on the subject, and of all I've read, this book was at the bottom of the barrel. I'm not saying it is completely without merits, but most of the good advice are available inall other books I've read. I do, however, fail to see advice aboutmeditation and guided imagery as relevant to RSI.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
It's a great adjunct to my treatment with my chiropractor. My chiropractor told me that a lot of patients do better when they eat more protein. It wasn't until I happened to open to the page that discussedprotein, carbohydrates and insulin (around p.122)that I understood why thatis true. The book is helping me to learn more about taking better care ofmyself during my recovery.

I like the pictures that show me how to do theexercises properly.

The part that seems to need improvement is somethinglike information on the Alexander Technique, and some of the other methods. But things that are familiar to chiropractor such as nutrition andchiropractic methods are excellent in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars It gives ideas on how to deal with this disability
You actually learn! It gives ideas on how to deal with the disability -- and the psychological part, too. It's a wonderful book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Alternatives in RSI treatment
This book provides information on RSI that includes alternative treatments, in contrast to (or to complement, I should say) Pascarelli/Quilter's standard-med emphasis. The difficulty in treating RSI has prompted a great deal of interest in alternative therapies.

I think the real strength of what Dr. Tim has written is his emphasis on an interdisciplinary treatment approach. In contrast to consulting a single practitioner who may have limited perspective and treatment preferences, Dr. Tim advocates for a team effort that *includes* standard medical professionals but brings in other practices such as chiropractic, acupuncture, massage, and others. Also, I think the book gives a decent basic rundown on the physiology of RSI, and includes good rehab information. While I consider some of the therapies presented here to be very questionable,at a minimum you will learn what each method claims to achieve for you from a writer who is not trying to sell one of them over!the other but hopes to draw something from each. ... Book Description

A proven recovery plan for the over 8 million sufferers of repetitive strain injury, and a guide for the prevention of future injuries.

Repetitive strain injury (RSI) is a painful, potentially disabling condition that most commonly stems from damage to the upper torso. Long-term misuse or overuse of everyday tools like computers and cash registers results in the painful hands, arms, and neck that are symptomatic of RSI, a condition whose incidence has increased 80 percent in this country since 1990.

The Repetitive Strain Injury Handbook is a unique, user-friendly guide that is broken into two parts: (1) the 8-step recovery plan and (2) an RSI prevention guide. The 8-step plan moves RSI sufferers beyond the common denial of this ailment and into a diagnosis and treatment plan with a doctor. It provides:

oNutrition advice
oAn exercise program
oBreathing tips
oTraditional and alternative pain management suggestions
oA holistic maintenance plan for long-term health

The second section is filled with suggestions, stories, and tips for RSI sufferers that will help them live pain-free at home, at work, and in their social and intimate lives. There is also a special section of information on women and RSI, since pregnancy, PMS, osteoporosis, mastectomy, and menopause can all aggravate this condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Service
Dr. Pascarelli has done us all a great service by explaining the various mechanisms of
RSI.He has done it in a way that makes a great deal of sense to the layman and has
been very helpful to me personally.Kudos to Dr. Pascarelli for writing a book for the
patients and sufferers of RSI, and not another book that only doctors can understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars An author with knowledge, a helpful but confusing book
In a publishing climate and a culture where behind every commercial publication, you just know lurks some author and editor with $$$ in her or his eyes--particularly in such how to books like become rich in real estate, write a best selling novel, how homeopathy cured my pet anaconda, I found this book extremely informative, passionate about its subject, sincere, clearly written but, the major defect is its structure; Dr. Pacarelli has taken a lifetime of experience (he says he's treated 6,000 cases of RSI) and provided a clear explanation of the many causes and types of the disorder. You will learn that "carpal tunnel" syndrome, which is the media's and layperson's term for disorders arising many from keyboarding (in the past typical sufferers were more likely to be musicians, sewers, sign language interpreters, etc.) is the diagnosis in only EIGHT percent of the cases of hand and arm damage.Dr Pascarelli explains it all: there are anatomical charts of the muscle system, the nerve system, photographs of hand & arm anomolies among sufferers, diagrams & photos of the wrong way and the right way to sit at a computer station, exercises, treatments, ergonomics, etc.You will learn why your average doctor, even orthopedists don't make proper diagnoses, even treatment plans, and often lack the knowledge of the big picture of RSI that affects not just nerves, but soft tissue, musculature, mood, and a lot more. You will be given a chapter of illustrated exercise routines. You will learn (and understand through experience)that splints are basically worthless and often harmful (except perhaps for sleeping). You will learn a host of treatment modalities--some described in detail, lesser mainstream ones like Alexander Technique, Feldenkreis, and Rolfing--which he is not adverse to trying. He also is up to date enough to discuss devices like voice activated software and the like. The problem arises in that after a discussion of the many types of RSI, the treatment plans he advocates are not specified as to which particular RSI syndrome you have. They are all lumped together. Nevertheless, this book is written in a compassionate, authoritive, supportive tone, although the fact that he suggests some people might just not ever get better from RSI is pretty sobering and pessimistic. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Pseudoscience, no data, even if well meaning
This book means well but is not based on sound medical principles. It criticizes other methods ("the failure rate for steroid injection is...about [sic] 75.6% of all patients"; "for surgery...the average failure rate, which is very conservative, is 57%...after 6 years the onset of these symptoms can [sic] reach higher than 90%". No references are given for these precision numbers, which are higher than typically quoted values.

In marked contrast, Ms. Montgomery cites no data whatsoever on the success rate of her own trademarked therapy. Instead, the book is well endowed with glowing anecdotal testimonials. She is described as a naturopathic doctor, and holistic health practitioner. She uses hair tissue analysis to evaluate nutrition. She is not a medically trained person.

From the very beginning, this book (like some others) conflates carpal tunnel syndrome with repetitive stress injury. In fact, the cause of carpal tunnel problems is varied, and not always from RSI. For example, the NIH Carpal Tunnel Factsheet on its website states: " Most likely the disorder is due to a congenital predisposition - the carpal tunnel is simply smaller in some people than in others. Other contributing factors include trauma or injury to the wrist that cause swelling, such as sprain or fracture; overactivity of the pituitary gland; hypothyroidism; rheumatoid arthritis; mechanical problems in the wrist joint; work stress; repeated use of vibrating hand tools; fluid retention during pregnancy or menopause; or the development of a cyst or tumor in the canal. In some cases no cause can be identified. There is little clinical data to prove whether repetitive and forceful movements of the hand and wrist during work or leisure activities can cause carpal tunnel syndrome."

Check high-quality sources on the Internet, and evaluate the likely benefit of various treatments before proceeding with recommendations from a source of this kind.

4-0 out of 5 stars This program works.
I do a lot of knitting and fibercrafts and had to take long breaks from it to recuperate, sometimes days. With these exercises my hands feel fine even after many hours of knitting.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for repetitive strain injuries
I am an Occupational Therapist who specializes in Hand Therapy.Kate` Montgomery's book is a very helpful resource for anyone suffering from repetitive strain injuries. This wholistic approach is a good blend of techniques from various health traditions. It is written in layman's terms with excellent illustrations that help you understand the cause of the pain and why you should follow the suggested program of stretches and massage. The self-massage techniques and exercises are especially helpful for those who need visual reminders of how to perform the various massage techniques and stretches. This book is a good supplement to treatment for those who are currently under the care of a health professional as well as those who are not in treatment. It is self-empowering for those willing to take responsibility for their health and follow the suggested 12 step corrective program on a daily basis. The sports balm is a helpful addition that promotes healing and relief of pain.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must if you have wrist problems
I've been playing drums for 10 years and using a computer intensively for the last 4 years for both study and work. About 12 months ago i decided i hadn't been practising drums enough and started to play again like i had before i started using computers - BOOM!!! Within 2 weeks i realised the occaissional pain i felt in my right wrist and hand after a long day on the computer wasn't the same as sore legs after going jogging. I've had semi-permanent pain in my right wrist and hand ever since and i've been extremely depressed and freaked out about it.

I stopped playing drums all together and started to use my left hand for essential computer mouse use (ie work only). I thought eventually my left hand would get problems and i'd have lost playing music and my career as a web designer.

Recently i discovered Kate Montgomery's book, and after reading it i feel there's hope i'll be able to heal myself by following her program. One day i'll be able to play drums again like i could before, and i'll still be able to use a computer to earn my living. Kate's book teaches you about how your arms, wrist and hands work, what causes wrist and hand pain, and how you can restore them after RSI related damage. The illustrations are excellent, and i feel confident i am doing the exercises correctly. Once i recover (i now believe i can) i will use Kate's preventative program to keep my wrists and hands healthy so i can play drums all my life. If you use your hands to earn your living and/or to do the things in your life that you love then Kate's book is a must. Kate is the Yoda of healthy hands!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tired of Chronic Pain? This Book isa Must-Have!
As a flutist and music therapy major in college, I experienced chronic wrist pain because of countless hours of practicing several instruments, typing papers, and hauling equipment for music therapy sessions.I had been to see a physical therapist during school but was not satisfied with the answer: "Quit practicing."Last year, tired of the physical and mental strain of chronic pain, I tried Kate's book in order to take control of my pain. With daily practice of the exercises illustrated in this book, I was ecstatic with the results. I could not remember the last time my hand was free of pain!Since my livelihood depends on using my hands, knowing I could stay virtually pain free with daily exercises was a huge relief. The trigger point releases and self-massage techniques in this book, help me to release the daily tightness of muscles in my hand and feel great. The range of motion exercises and stretches are quick and easy to do throughout the day.Without this book, I would still be a victim of chronic pain.I have been more than pleased to find a way to strengthen my wrists and hands to prevent further damage and pain.If you are ready to take and active role in decreasing hand and wrist pain and preventing further problems, you will not regret purchasing this book. ... From the supplier: Many defendants in repetitive stress injury cases will pay nuisance value settlements rather than face the expense of a trial. Defendants may, however, be able to obtain summary judgments based on statute of limitations theories by following certain steps. Defense attorneys should familiarize themselves thoroughly with the product involved, depose the plaintiff as soon as possible, subpoena the plaintiff's employment, workers' compensation and medical records and inspect the workplace. Defense attorneys armed with all of this evidence should have a good chance of obtaining summary judgment rulings.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very little information
This slim volume (less than 100 pages of real content, and printed in a large font size and with lots of white space) provides very general information on RSIs.The information is neither complete nor authoritatitve. The chapter on treatment, for example, just lists the things you can go to a doctor for, and has a few paragraphs on alternative procedures such as acupuncture.BTW, using yoga to treat RSI is probably the dumbest idea I've heard, myself being a former yoga practioner.Imagine supporting your weight upside down on your injured wrists!Avoid this book. ... From the supplier: Officials at Columbia University assert that an improved typing technique can significantly decrease the rate of repetitive strain injuries in journalists. The initial response to the affliction was to invest in new, ergonomically designed office equipment. However, the problem persisted. Those who type must condition themselves to properly use their whole bodies rather than just their forearms, wrists and hands. Repetitive strain on the lower arm will continue unless the elbows and shoulders are used properly. Nonetheless, ergonomic keyboards and chairs are also beneficial.
