4-0 out of 5 stars This book really helped.
When I suddenly experienced intense pain and swelling, leading to the discovery that I had developed RA, I felt totally blindsided. I knew nothing about this disease and needed info that I could understand right away. This book was a huge help to me and I still find reasons to go back to it again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book in new condition
Book came in just a few days and was in like new condition.Book was informative and easy to read for the layman.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too narrow-minded in its approach
This book provides excellent information about what rheumatoid arthritis is, how to distinguish it from osteoarthritis, etc.

However, I don't want to live with RA, I want to recover from it. As such, this book offers no help in this regard. It tells me about drugs that I can take and splints that I can wear to help me from becoming completely disabled, but offers me no hope of recovery.

In contrast, the book "Conquering Arthritis" by Barbara Allan, is the well-researched account of someone who took charge of their health and fought to recover from the disease, to get their life back. And succeeded! I'm well on the road to recovery myself by applying the principles in her book. Now that's a book well worth spending your money on!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Introduction to this disease
I was diagnosed with RA in December and picked this book up soon after.It gives lots of information about the course of the disease, medications, exercises and diet.I've loaned it to family members and reference it whenever I have a question about what my body is doing.The only drawback is that medications are developing at such a fast rate, that the book is already a bit outdated after only 3 years.However, it is still a great starting point.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a work of superb medical scholarship
Now in an updated and expanded second edition, Living With Rheumatoid Arthritis by Tammi L. Shlotzhauer (Clinical Instructor of Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center and Practicing Rheumatologist at Rheumatology Associates of Rochester) and James L. McGuire (Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Mount Auburn Hospital, Cambridge, Massachusetts) is a large print compendium of the latest information on Rheumatoid Arthritis concerning the diagnosis, treatment, and daily life (from special diets to possible alternative therapies and more) with this troublesome and painful disease. Living With Rheumatoid Arthritis informatively presents its facts in terms and text ideal for the non-specialist general reader, yet without glossing over specific issues, problems, medicines, or other challenges facing rheumatoid arthritis sufferers. Simply put -- this is a work of superb medical scholarship and Living With Rheumatoid Arthritis should be on the shelves and available to the patrons of every community library system in this country. ... Product Description
Too often, people faced with a disease such as rheumatoid arthritis hear words like, "disabling,""progressive," or "tragic." "Tragic" may be what people are saying but the real tragedy is that these often repeated words do nothing but harm to those who hear them. They completely ignore a very real truth: physical issues can absolutely lead to positive transformation, action, challenge, inner strength, deep courage, and compassion. This unique book is written by someone who knows her subject well. Kat Elton, an occupational therapist and woman who's had rheumatoid arthritis since age two, knows that people with RA don't need false hope or to be told what to do. What they do need is to be led toward believing in themselves and improving their reality no matter what it is. Part practical guide, part workbook, part memoir, this book demonstrates that although there is no magic bullet or cure for rheumatoid arthritis, there is a way to live well with this disease. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
There are positive and negative aspects to living with rheumatoid arthritis. I've had the disease for over 36 years and there are times I'm still amazed. Learning to thrive along with the ups and downs is always challenging. There are books written on how to do it -- but everyone experiences their journey with rheumatoid arthritis their way. I've read books -- even written one myself. Occasionally there is a book that stands above the rest and really resonates -- a must read. "A Resilient Life" by Kat Elton, OTR, is that book. ~ Carol Eustice ([...] Guide to Arthritis - [...])

******************************

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE CONSULTING YOUR DOCTOR!

******************************

A research scientist and former arthritis sufferer outlines a proven treatment that could banish your arthritis pain forever. This well-documented study presents evidence that rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and other chronic illnesses are caused by microbial infection. When the infection triggers allergic reactions, it appears that the body's immune system has turned on itself. Once the cause of the infection and allergies are identified and removed, arthritis symptoms will decrease and likely disappear as long as the body's collective systems remain in balance.

********************************

IN THIS BOOK YOU WILL DISCOVER:

-- Actions of microorganisms that cause RA-mycoplasmas, mycobacteria, molds, spirochetes (e.g., Lyme), viruses, bacteria and their L-forms;
-- Their role in other chronic illnesses with arthritis-like symptoms such as Fibromyalgia, Lupus, Multiple Sclerosis, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome;
-- Online authoritative medical information and support organizations;
-- The best Internet sites to research health, drugs, treatments, and disease;
-- What diagnostic tests are available and where to get them;

AND LEARN WAYS TO:
-- Recognize and suppress pathogenic microorganisms;
-- Destroy or eliminate the toxins they produce;
-- Control the allergies that trigger RA reactions;
-- Strengthen the immune system using natural, non-toxic methods;
-- Locate a health care professional to work with you.

*********************************

Conventional RA treatments include toxic drugs that reduce painful symptoms but do not treat the root cause, namely, bacterial infection. An immune system weakened by drugs (e.g., antidepressants or antihistamines), improper diet, stress, and multiple infections is unable to produce the quantity and quality of natural antibodies to stave off new attacks. This book describes the steps necessary to:

-- Identify, attack, and remove the cause(s) of the infection(s);
-- Neutralize pathogen-generated wastes (toxins and harmful enzymes);
-- Flush these wastes from the body; and
-- Restore the body's systems to normal, healthy function.

*******************************

Until recently, testing methods to identify these microorganisms precisely and to prescribe effective treatments have not been available. Traditional treatments with immunosuppressing drugs often breed stronger, more resistant bacterial organisms, which mutate and grow, overwhelming the immune system's resources. Undiagnosed food and chemical allergies can also amplify the severity of arthritis symptoms. In this book, both the lay reader and physician will find an effective course of treatment possibly leading to a cure for RA and other chronic illnesses with arthritis-like symptoms. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fails to mention the other infection connection
That infectious disease is the cause of rheumatoid arthritis and in fact many of the so-called autoimmune diseases has been postulated for over a century, but has never been accepted. If true, it means that the standard treatments for R.A. which are all based on suppression of the immune system must be rethought. The book describes treatments that are based on, or at least not inconsistent with an infectious cause for the disease. The book centers on the work of Dr. Brown on tetracycline therapy for R.A. and the theory that Mycoplasma infection causes R.A., but it also investigates other possible causes such as Lyme, Amoebic infections, HIV, viruses and parasites. Poehlmann has collected a large amount of evidence to support the infection theory, such as for instance the similarities between R.A. and Lyme disease.

Yet despite the large amount of information collected, there remains a serious and large hole in the book. Poehlmann completely fails to mention the other major infection connection, to wit, the theory of focal infections. This theory also states that degenerative diseases, such as R.A. are caused by hidden infections that cannot be cleared by the immune system. These infections are located not in the joints, but mostly in and around the teeth, and consist mostly of Streptococcus and related bacteria. While not universally accepted either, a similarly large body of evidence exists to support this theory, much of it based on the work of Dr. Price, see for instance The Root Canal Cover-up. This theory is not inconsistent with the demonstrated efficacy of minocycline therapy. While dental focal infections can be somewhat difficult to locate, even for a skilled dentist, they are not nearly as elusive as Dr. Brown's mycoplasmas or Dr. Wyburn Mason's amoebas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on the Topic
This was the first book I read on the topic of Rheumatoid Arthritis. I found it to be extremely well researched. The writing style is straight and to the point and covers all pertinent topics.The book answered so many of my questions. I could identify with the author's desire to take control of her own health. She tells exactly how to do so in this book.I have read 8 additional books on the topic and continue to use this book as a reference. This was the first book to give me a degree of hope. I highly recommend this book for RA sufferers.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Missing Link
Six years ago I was told that I was suffering from the "sudden onset of acute, aggressive, raging rheumatoid arthritis, that I had an army marching in my body and if I did not go onto conventional treatment would end up in a wheelchair within a year"(to quote one of the leading rheumatologists in Cape Town)

I believe in the intelligence of the body. I do not believe in the existence of auto-immune disease. Katherine Poehlman confirms this for me. To my knowledge the body ends up attacking itself in its attempt to rid itself of invading bacteria, viruses and/or parasites. For me, The Infection Connection is, indeed, the missing link pulling together 6 years of research into trying to cure myself. It has definitely fast-forwarded my cure.

I have taken the wealth of knowledge from the book and, being a homoeopath myself, have made homoeopathic remedies of the invading organisms which I have been taking for the last two months. My swelling has gone down by 90% and I am successively becoming more mobile. I cannot thank Katherine Poehlman enough for the wonderful, generous, user friendly presentation of her knowledge.

I hope, in the future, to be to help many people suffering from so-called auto-immune diseases, many of them not having access to proper medical care anyway, (I live in a third world country) which will end up being their blessing as my refusal to go on conventional medication was mine. Once again, thank you, Katherine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better Than Expected
This is a very interesting book with lots of information concerning RA disease. Has given me information to take to my doctor and ask about. Reaffirmed my belief of bacteria and virus types being the root cause of this disease and possibly other autoimmune diseases. Has given me some ideas of things I can do myself while waiting for test results and doctor to get on board with the lastest treatment options. Pretty easy read. Recommend to anyone who wants more understanding of RA and possible test and treatment options that may be different than conventional treatment options.

5-0 out of 5 stars must read for anyone w/ R.A.
Highly recommended for anyone that is dealing w/ R.A. Please don't buy into the "incurable" word until YOU HAVE DONE ALL YOUR RESEARCH! 1-0 out of 5 stars a recipe book
I was very disappointed in this book. Having RA myself I did not feel a connection with Sonia. If anything, I felt she was selling her recipes. It was boring and definitely not worth the time or money spent to purchase this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have Rheumatoid Arthritis, you must read it
I felt completely identified with the author Sonia St. Claire. If you have Rheumatoid Arthritis, you must read this book. You will find that some of the symptons you have, had never been linked with RA. You will begin to understand yourself and become aware of your body. Some of the pains described in this book, I would have never related to RA. Doctors don't tell you (because they don't feel the stress, pain and dispair). They are not sick.
Sonia describes in a very easy going manner all about RA and how she went from being truly impaired in bed to freeing herself from RA. We all can!!! Congratulations

5-0 out of 5 stars Freedom from Rheumatoid Arthritis
This book is an incredible read! It is full of up to date information on how to live a healthy life. Although, the diet is directed towards eliminating Rheumatoid Arthritis, it makes sense that a diet of this kind would boost one's immune system and cure any number of ailments. The author has written a poignant, informative picture of her life story. She reflects on her childhood as an orphan and the considerable abuse that she endured over a long period of time.Resentments and emotional baggage carried from Childhood to adulthood can wreak havoc on one's body. Hence, the crippling effect of rheumatoid arthritis as it ravages the body. The author took fate into her own hands and decided that she was going to heal her body with getting back to nature: eating healthy and eliminating toxic foods, drinks and medicine from her diet. The results are evident, nothing short of miraculous as this once crippled women is now a picture of physically and emotionally health. I thank the author for sharing this with us. It is truly a gift. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book for people with rheumatoid arthritis
I am a rheumatologist in private practice.I see many patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

It is easy to read but with sufficient detail for the more sophisticated health consumer. It is a great reference source for patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and for family members and care-givers of those with RA.The chapters on medications are particularly useful and well-organized.I like her general advice which is important to all people with chronic diseases, not only RA. Ms. Koehn tells us to be informed and to take charge of our ownhealth care...

5-0 out of 5 stars Saved My Life!
The knowledge obtained from this book saved my life!I had had scleroderma for 11 years when I first started taking the recommended dosage of tetracycline twice a day, three times a week.My doctor told me it wasn't going to work, but after taking it for 23 months,my skin started to soften, and now, four years later, I can touch my toes from a standing position,something I thought would never be able to do again,The damage that the scleroderma left behind is still present, but praise God, my skin is soft again!The review is published under my husband's name.Thought it was important to mention that women get scleroderma a lot more often than men.Don't have any idea why.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Road Back by Thomas McPherson Brown
The information in this book was instrumental in my rheumatoid arthritis going into
remission 20 years ago. I have recently begun to have recurring joint pain and have
begun antibiotic again with good results. Excellent information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
What a simple cure for a devastating disease.Really opens your eyes to the medical world and its answers to treatment for debilitating disease.A must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK!
When my spouse was diagnosed with RA, rather than use drugs for symptoms which are highly toxic chemicals, we used this method and in ten months was RA free. Compared to having it for a lifetime, this seemed a short period of time to terminatedly handle the disease. It's been sixteen years now... with no return of RA.

This is the only way to go in any medical problem-- treating the cause, not just drugging the symptoms. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good General Guide to RA
So far this book has been very helpful, especially with various issues that affect people with RA.It is up-to-date on the pharmaceutical options for the treatment of RA.A good general guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book out there.
I've been very disappointed in the quality of books out on the market about inflammation disesases such as RA. This is the only one I would recommend. It has all the info you need, neatly laid out with great, easy-to-read graphics. Definately 5 stars! Also look for their book on Alternative Therapies. Buy extra copies for your family/friends so they understand what you're going through.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must
If you or a family member or a close friend has been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, this is the book to read. It explains the various aspects of the disease, what one can expect to happen, how to cope with the pain and how to organize your life in order to minimize the stress the disease can cause. The book does not candy-coat the disease, but does show how it can be managed. It explains the different drugs that are available to help and it explains their side-effects, also. There are helpful hints to diet and exercise, as well. I found this to be a very important book for me because it gave me the ground-work for dialog with my doctor. I am glad I found this book. ... Product Description
As a biologist with over thirty years of experience teaching a wide range of complex biomedical subjects and a person who suffers from rheumatoid arthritis (RA) himself, Dr Thomas F Lee is ideally suited to write a book that addresses the vital questions about the nature of the disease and the rationale behind its treatment. This is the only book that explains in layperson's terms the newest available therapies and the latest advances in our understanding of this often debilitating disease. These new insights have led to many molecular-based approaches already in clinical trial, and many more are waiting in the wings. All of these exciting developments are the result of the ongoing biotechnological revolution and a new understanding of the immune system aided by genetic research. Millions of people suffer from rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a debilitating auto-immune disease that ravages the delicate lining of the joints. As in other auto-immune diseases, instead of defending against foreign invaders, the immune system inexplicably attacks healthy tissue.RA causes systemic effects as well; not only are joints painful, through the destruction of bone and cartilage, but there is often accompanying fatigue, decreased appetite, depression, and muscle pain. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read
Great book for someone newly diagnosed with RA. Especially for someone who likes, "how stuff works". Offers an extensive list of websites in the back for further fact gathering and keeping up to date. Also a good resource for navigating and understanding the disease process and progression & the medicines available. I wish there had been a nod to, Dr. John E Sarno's (professor, Rehabilitation Medicine at the New York University School of Medicine) work and experience with treating RA and other mindbody disorders. If you are reading this review and have an interest his most recent book (2007) "The Divided Mind" is well worth taking a look at. I think it is important to keep an open mind, keep digging and find what works for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a comprehensive discussion of RA we can understand.
This discussion on RA is the most comprehensive available in layman's terms.This disease process is so complicated and the research on treatment so varied, trying to keep up on journal articles or short publications is almost impossible. This book puts more useable information between the two covers than you will find anywhere. Unlike medical journals, the disease process explanations are concise and understandable.Although the explanations are detailed and scientific and may take more than one reading to get your brain around the complex concepts, it nicely falls somewhere in between the very oversimplified information found in "arthritis" books available at bookstores and over-complicated and hard-to-read medical book information. Truly helpful is the detail about how clinical trials are conducted and the complicated sequence of events that occur in treatment research. It makes the waiting for decades for new treatments a little easier to understand. Also helpful are the briefs on current research (now a bit out of date-some of the "in trials" treatments in the book have been approved and are available) that is ongoing along with web sites so individuals can follow trials, results, research progress, etc. and even contains information on joining in some of the clinical trials. The description of the immune processes is very helpful. Not only does it help the reader understand the immune system as a whole, and the effect of this disease on the immune system, it also gives a good picture of how HIV and AIDS compares on the opposite end of the immunity spectrum (overactive vs. underactive immune system). Best of all, this book arms RA sufferers with good information to be able to take a more active role in their own treatment. Buy it for a friend who has RA or buy it for yourself. You will want to reread it several times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Gift for someone with rheumatoid arthritis!
If you have rheumatoid arthritis, or if a friend or loved one has been diagnosed with this disease I highly recommend this book as an invaluable source of information.Not only is it packed with facts on rheumatoid arthritis ranging from details of exactly what is happening in the joints and the immune system to useful Web sites to keep up on the latest details on new medications and treatment approaches, it is also clearly and beautifully written.It really is a handbook to help readers make informed decisions with their physcians.Included as well are fascinating insights into possible future treatments now in the research stage - from the use of stem cells to gene therapy.
This is the best gift you can give a friend who suffers from RA. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The New Arthritis Breakthrough
I advise anyone with arthritis to read this book. You will never hear about this vital information from established medical practitioners. The pharmaceutical industry has persuasive power over medical research that may work to vastly prolong medical breakthroughs from reaching millions of arthritis sufferers. I found this book fascinating.

4-0 out of 5 stars The New Arthritis Breakthrough
The book was a great deal, since the list price was $22.95 and it was a hardback edition. It did have some type of a light, coffee stain throughout most of the book, but it was in the right margin so it didn't affect the readability. For the cost of shipping however, I feel that it should've been shipped priority mail, not book rate.
Very informative book written about the history of antibiotic treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, and other related conditions, which I am using to decide whether or not to utitilize this therapy, for which my doctor has provided a prescription, and the Arthritis Foundation now lists in their pamphlet on medications for arthritis.

4-0 out of 5 stars earning an alternate treatment for RA
I found this book to be enlighting.I took it to my next visit with my Dr. and was pleased to find out that not only was he aware of this treatment but accecpted it.He did tell me that Mira is not without side effects stated in the book.Like anything else, you must be your own advocate and learn and question the treatment.My RA is mild and the treatment does not involve some of the meds mentioned in the book that are bad for you and if needed we will use more of the anti-biotic treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Arthritis Breakthrough
This is an excellent book and very specific and informative.It gives one hope that they just don't have to live with the pain and problems of rheumatoid arthritis.It also gives one information to take to doctors, many of whom seem to be clueless about how to treat this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saved my life!!!!
I recently purchased this book on a recommendation from a doctor. I have severe fibromyalsia and he wanted me to read the book before I went through with the antibiotic IV treatments he offers. After reading this book, I was so excited. The book explains exactly why people with RA and fibro feel the way they do. I even cried when I read some of the stories from people because now I know they don't have to suffer the way they do. I decided to go through with the antibiotic IV treatments and 4 months later I am a completely new person. I have energy again and I feel SO MUCH BETTER! I am still on pain medication, but I have been able to go longer between doses and some days I don't have to take as many. I feel like I have my life back. After 14 years of having to lay down 2 times a day and some days not even being able to take a flight of stairs, I am so grateful for the treatments. Anyone out there suffering from the diseases listed in this book, please, please, please read this and go through with the treatments. You have nothing to loose and EVERYTHING to gain. Good luck and feel better! ... Read more

Product Description
"This splendid volume is easily understandable, uses real-life situations as examples and is far more up-to-the-minute than other such books. From sexuality to surgery, it offers practical and science-based advice."--Charles M. Plotz, M.D., Editor-in-Chief, Rheuma21st.com

Your complete guide to understanding and living well with rheumatoid arthritis

If you or someone close to you suffers from rheumatoid arthritis (RA), this book is a powerful tool you don’t want to be without. Two of the authors are physicians at the Hospital for Special Surgery, one of the nation’s oldest and best orthopedic research hospitals. Its purpose is to arm you with the information you need to take charge of your disease management and work with your doctors to develop a treatment program that’s right for your lifestyle and life goals.

In plain English, the authors demystify rheumatoid arthritis–its causes, progression, and various effects on the human body–and decode the often perplexing language that doctors use to describe RA and its diagnosis and treatment. They explain the various treatment and pain management options available to you and ways to discuss them with your doctor. The authors also include the true stories of RA patients whose tales offer encouragement and powerful insights for dealing with the difficult psychological and lifestyle issues RA sufferers face. Their expert advice and guidance covers a range of topics of vital concern to people affected by RA, including:

  • Old, new, and emerging drug therapies, including gold, corticosteroids, and immunosuppressants
  • Analgesics and anti-inflammatories
  • Alternative treatment strategies
  • Nutrition, diet, and exercise for RA
  • Vitamins and supplements, including glucosamine and Evening Primrose oil
  • Managing crucial lifestyle issues such as sports, travel, and sex

5-0 out of 5 stars Rheumatism ArthritisHandbook by Paget et al.
This is an excellent reference work for the arthritic ailments.
The authors indicate some basic principles for patients to
follow in pursuing a successful treatment regimen:
1- be well informed about the disease and the process of disease
2- have a good rapor with the respective physicians on the case
3- assemble a medical team
4- select team members of physicians carefully

There are some supportive therapies for the arthritic diseases.
These are exercise, heat and cold application, as well as,
acupuncture. Surgery may be a good resort for hip, knee or
hand repair. Stretching exercises are helpful in achieving
a wider range of motion in the disease process. A good diet
consists of approximately 55% carbs; 20% protein and 25% fats.
Fish oil-particularly omega 3 can be helpful in dealing with
physical fatigue and joint tenderness.The work is written
for the layperson. It is easy to understand and apply.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Comprehensive Book on RA
I was diagnosed with RA recently after suffering with its symptoms for probably 8 years. I knew nothing about Rheumatoid Arthritis before this and never even considered it a cause of my pains. I am currently under the care of a Rheumatologist at the Hosiptal for Special Surgery. This book has been a tremdous help in conjunction with my doctor in understanding the problem.

The book takes a very thorough look at the Rheumatoid Arthritis - diagnosing it, what kind of questions to ask, causes, treatments, therapy, useful outside resources, and examples of others with RA.

A very helpful book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
I came across this book after I started to have a suspicion about nightshade intolerance. My doctor had suggested I try to stay way from nightshade for a month to see if it had any positive effect on joint pain (that started about 18 months ago). I can say now that in my case, there is a very strong correlation between what I eat and pain in joints.If I eat tomatoes, potatoes or eggplant I will start to get pain in my wrists within 1-2 hours. If I completely abstain from eating any more nightshade the pain will gradually disappear within 24-36 hours. The amounts of food that trigger pain might be as little as less than a potato/tomato. When I eat more I also get pain in elbows, shoulders, hips, ankles and big toe primarily. The pain is symmetrical left/rt side. Today I also noticed that coffee (which I have stayed away from for a while now) also seems to trigger the same symptoms. (coffee plant is also nightshade). The other symptom I also get from nightshades is weakness in the muscles in hands and forearms. I read that the alkaloid that's in nightshades (solanine/tomatin etc.) can interfere with neurological communication with muscles by blocking the receptors. After having reduced nightshade to very infrequent and minimal consumption, I am free from these symptoms again.

I'm a 36 year old man who has been vegetarian for 10 years (also staying away from milk and wheat for the most part which cause other symptoms (mucus)).

The book recommends elimination diet which is worth trying. But for me it was sufficient to just avoid night shades without having to go through the rigors of eliminating most foods. The book recommends the Alcat test, I personally decided not to because there is no more accurate indication that what you observe yourself in terms of symptoms! The blood test is only 60% accurate (that is, doing the test twice will only give you approximately similar results, so what is the use if it is not repeatable? Also, doing some research about the test, those who recommend the Alcat test can get kickbacks for referrals (which could be the case for the author, but is not disclosed as far as I can see). I found a better deal on the Alcat test on a different website than the Author's so look around.)

Everyone is different and cause of arthritis symptoms may vary widely. By doctor tested me negative for RA so I have some general type of arthritis.

I can imagine most people will not even try the elimination diet as many people cannot even bear the idea of changing their diet... which is too bad.It may also take longer to notice any change by eliminating offending foods if one has had symptoms for a long time I read from another source. My reasoning is that if I can change my diet then it is worth it no doubt if I can avoid damage being done to my joints...

Thanks for writing this book, I hope many will benefit from it so that they can reduce or eliminate their pain and symptoms if foods are the cause (other causes could be pesticides, mercury fillings, artificial sweeteners...so it doesn't just need to be foods).

PS Another reviewer commented that the author mostly talked about RA. But I don't think this matters, because the foods you eat can cause arthritis even though it is not RA. This book could probably be applicable to people with fibromyalgia, etc. as well since we're talking auto-immune diseases).

5-0 out of 5 stars Pain free and no meds in 6 days!
I suffer from rheumatoid arthritis and was diagnosed a year ago. I finally decided to look for alternative medacine when my doctor wanted to increase the dosage of my medacine and add another medacine even though I was feeling perfectly fine. I was taking methotrexate, predisone, and hydroxychloroquine. I read about this book and the mcdougal diet and checked it out from my local library. After starting a low fat veagan diet (mcdougal diet) and eliminating problem foods (conquering arthritis)I was pain free in six days!! I have now been on the diet for 27 days and am 98% pain free There are stil problem foods that i need to identify but i have not done the fast recommended in the bookyet. I definitely recommend this book and look for it in your local library so you can try it without buying it. Also recommend the mcdougall diet lost 11 lbs in the 27 days so far went from 126 to 114 lbs!

2-0 out of 5 stars The author has lumped all arthritic diseases into one big disorder
The author's personal story of overcoming "Reactive Arthritis" is truly endearing (you first learn of her diagnosis on page XXIV); however, she NEVER tells us what kind of arthritis she attempts to address in her book. Instead the author has appearently lumped all arthritic diseases into one big disorder to be treated in similar fashion. Reactive Arthritis is not the same as Rheumatoid Arthritis, and neither of those are the same as Osteoarthritis. Rheumatoid Arthritis is a systemic illnesses (auto immune disease) that affects not only the joints but the tissues and organs of the body. Osteoarthritis is a disease limited to the joints and NOT the tissues or organs of the body. Lastly, Reactive Arthritis, which the author states she has, is a joint disorder that has the following symptoms: (1) inflamed joints, (2) inflammation of the eyes, and (3) inflammation of the genital, urinary, or gastrointestinal systems. It is called "reactive arthritis" because it is believed to involve an immune response "reacting" to the presence of bacterial infections in the genital, urinary, or gastrointestinal systems. ([...]). These are three very different arthritic diseases having very different symptoms and pathology. Yet, the author seems to imply that her success with treating her own Reactive Arthritis through trial and error will work the same for someone suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis or Osteoarthritis. I don't mean to sound rude, as I admire her tenacity and success in overcoming her own disease, but she is not a doctor and the successful treatments and principles described in her book are limited to her personal experiences with Reactive Arthritis. I only wish she would have been more straight forward in disclosing this fact in the title or on the cover somewhere.I felt mislead.

She does provide some good information about healthy living, removing "toxins" from your food, and lists some websites and other resources for allergy testing and where to purchase certain products. To that end, her principles and advice are probably good to follow in general, regardless of your disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great addition to any alternitive health library!
A good book on the subject, with lots of discussion on why Arthritis happens and how the medical profession is holding back the real cure.

One other very simple and good book WITH the cures IN the book is Arthritis: The Cure, and if you just want the cure, read it!You'll be typing, walking, running, etc before you know it!

Arthritis: The Cure: The Last Book You'Ll Ever Need On Arthritis

5-0 out of 5 stars We finally Feel Empowered!
The only "cure" for my partner's RA, the doctors told us, are drugs with very serious side effects. And those drugs would only hold off the inevitable debilitating deformities. We decided that we had to take this into our own hands. I read many books on the subject that were helpful, but when I read Barbara Allen's book, I knew I had found the miracle that we were looking for. We both changed our diets and my partner got relief immediately. We are now awaiting the results from the Alcat blood test so we can further "tone" our diets and avoid inflamatory foods. If you too are feeling discouraged with what your doctor is telling you about RA, read this book. You will be glad you did!! ... Read more
