Product Description
This book tells the story of my search for help for rheumatoid arthritis without using any drugs, as I was aware that all drugs have side effects.I was on four the strongest at one time. What I discovered enabled me to dispense with these, one by one. In addition to diet and supplements, there were many other sources of help which have been invaluable over the years since I first started with this disease.Self healing is hard work. The first thing to do is to take personal responsibility for yourself. You learn what is best for your body-what it needs. You also have to look at anything which is hindering your progress in healing.Sometimes you need to change something in your life. This is not always easy or possible. If we cannot change something we have to learn to accept it. The next thing is to be as pure and free from toxins as possible, by regular detoxification methods as described in the book. What you eat and drink is of paramount importance.Diet is described; food should be as uncontaminated by additives, pesticides, colorings and chemicals as is possible. The diet should be mainly alkaline. Animal fat causes stiffness and pain.Fresh vegetables and salads should constitute a large part of the diet.Food supplements play a large part in a healing programme for arthritis. Complementary therapies are useful and beneficial.Other important factors include regular exercise, correct breathing and fresh air.Personally I have found these to be invaluable - yoga, relaxation and meditation.Spiritual healing is often very successful. The importance of your mind cannot be over-emphasized; your thoughts can change your life, bringing peace and harmony, which lead to the healing of mind, body and spirit. ... Read more

Product Description

She begins, in the morning, by casing her joints: Can her ankles take the stairs? Will her fingers open a jar? Peel an orange? But it was not always this way for Mary Felstiner, who went to bed one night an active professional and healthy young mother, and woke the next morning literally out of joint. With wrists and elbows no longer working right, she’d discovered one of the first signs of rheumatoid arthritis, the most virulent form of a common disease. Out of Joint is her account of living through arthritis, a distinction she shares with seventy million Americans.

While arthritis pain affects one out of three Americans, this book is the first to tell the personal story of the nation’s most common yet neglected disease. Part memoir, part medical and social history, Out of Joint folds the author’s private experience into far-reaching investigations of a socially hidden ailment and of any chronic condition—how to handle love, work, sexuality, fatigue, betrayal, pain, time, mortality, rights, myths, and memory. Moving from the 1940s to the present, this story of one life with arthritis exposes little-known medical research and provocative social issues: alarming controversies over arthritis miracle drugs, intense demands concerning disability, and the surprising and disproportionate number of women affected by chronic illness. From this prize-winning historian comes a call for healing through history, a moving meditation on the way chronic conditions can be treated by enlisting the past.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the read.
I always like to read an experience from the inside and this first person telling is very expressive and well worth the read.
I would like to also recommend Carol Levy's A Pained Life, a chronic pain journey.
It is of the same autobiographical mold.
The author in this book tells of her struggle with and against a facial pain disorder called trigeminal neuralgia - also called "the worst pain known to man" and "the suicide disease."
It has been called "hard to out down" by the American Chronic Pain Association" and "a fascinating story" by Steve Hall, writer, NY Times magazine.
If you enjoyed Out Of Joint I think this will also be a good read for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars The private made public
As someone with inflammatory arthritis and an advocate for making arthritis more visible to society, I was so glad to hear Mary speak and read this book. We have been lacking any sort of exploration of arthritis and its effects. Arthritis is epidemic in this country, but it is still invisible. This is one more step for bringing it to light.

This book explores so many different angles- the emotional, the artistic, the physical, the social, the private, the public. Sometimes her writing meanders over into poetry and somehow explains medical terms with poetic expression.

5-0 out of 5 stars AN IMPORTANT BOOK
Mary Lowenthal Felstiner has written an important book on many levels. Out of Jointshould become the classic for anyone struggling with a chronic problem, be it physical or mental. Mary has an amazing ability to express what so many of us feel ...but in an original, refreshing, and totally unique way.
I loved her refusal to quit or to accept that nothing more could be done.Like that energetic bunny, she just kept on going, searching for probable causes, exploring possible cures, and keeping a constant, sometimes hilarious, dialogue with herself. This book is also a lesson in how to go about family life and love the RIGHT way...an inspiration to us all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Appreciation for Out of Joint
Buy this book! And discover the magic which Mary
Felstiner, a prize-winning professor of history,
brings to words. This story about rheumatoid arthritis
is a page-turner. Felstiner's gift for mixing plain
speech with the technical and erudite is totally
astounding. Further, she demonstrates the healing
potential of narrative, a multi-faceted narrative
glinting with allusion. Through her account, Felstiner
manages to make us proud to be human, capable at the
same time of suffering and transcendence. Five stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Investigation of Connectedness
I enjoyed this book so greatly.I love the way Mary Felstiner approaches the subject of joints, jointedness, connection, from such varied angles, using documents of cultural, personal, and medical history.Magnificent!!What a huge accomplishment this book represents.Apart from all else, I've learned a staggering amount from this gifted author about the body in a cultural context, and this has illuminated a lot of questions in my own life. ... Love, lust, boys and coursework - the main worries of a teenage girl? Not for eighteen-year-old Alice Peterson, who, at the height of her youth and an extremely promising tennis career, was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. In the midst of shock and denial, and the enduring question, 'Isn't it old people who get arthritis?', Alice had to learn to live with what quickly turned from the odd ache and pain to a very aggressive form of the illness, and rediscover a new path in life. "Another Alice" is at times utterly heart-breaking, and at others laugh-out-loud. Here is her story of how, armed with humour and courage, she left behind a world she loved to overcome the pain of a degenerative illness. Told with wit, charm and frankness, "Another Alice" is also a story of friendship, family, growing up and the desire to be 'normal'. But, above all, it celebrates the power of the human spirit. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Kids with Arthritis
Arthritis is a debilitating, painful and progressive disease.Juvenile forms of arthritis are just as virile, often stunting growth and robbing youngsters of their childhood physicality. The effect on families is often devastating. No one seems to know that arthritis so profoundly affects over 300,000 children in America alone.

Kelly Rouba has written a book to give young people and their families the skills and information they need to more effectively deal with their arthritis. This book should be automatic reading for every family with a child diagnosed with juvenile arthritis. The author, herself a victim of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis since the age of 2, gives families hope with her thorough discussion of arthritis research underway.Ms. Rouba is a national spokesperson for the Arthritis National Research Foundation, advocating for young arthritis patients, to increase public awareness of juvenile arthritis and the critical need for research.I applaud Kelly's wonderful gift of this book -- families across the country will benefit immensely. ... Product Description
How to Deal with Back Pain and Rheumatoid Joint Pain is apractical manual based on the author's many years of research andnumerous clinical observations. The book introduces a new medicaltechnology to treat and prevent back pain and rheumatoid joint pain.

* Learn the vital information on the mechanics behind your spinal column, the role of the disc and its needs for water.

* Learn the simple body movement that will promote fluid circulation in the disc spaces that will result in relief of the back pain and sciatic pain.

* It is simple, safe and inexpensive. Don't hate yourself for missing out on this information.Amazon.com Review
Dr. Batmanghelidj received his formal medical education at St. Mary's Hospital Medical School of London University. He provides for the layman a clear and comprehensive book on the origins of chronic pain. His clinical and scientific research exposes, for the first time, that recurring "chronic pains" are a signal system of the body indicating severe general or local dehydration. Most of these pains can be relieved simply by drinking water. Instead, however, the patient often receives costly pharmaceutical medications which treat rather than cure.

In this book, back pain and rheumatoid joint pain as indicators of local chronic dehydration are explained. The mechanisms involving the important role of water in holding the spinal column together are discussed. Based on years of detailed study of the human anatomy and the science of physiology, Dr. Batmanghelidj has devised a new exercise approach for the successful hydration of the disc core, the retraction of the displaced discs, and immediate relief of pain, even sciatica. These exercises are clearly explained and demonstrated, and may be the only way to save yourself from the surgeon's knife.

This book is unlike any other "how-to" book on the market. It is an instructive presentation about the very simple way of finding comfort and relief from two of the most commonly occurring pains of the body low back pain and rheumatoid joint pain. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the Read
I would definately buy and read this book again.Although the information is simple, he does a great job of explaining how your spine works when it comes to hydration.Gave me some good visuals for helping my spine, I have DDD.I have RA, also, and water does seem to be helping. Again his explanation gave me a good understanding as to what's going on with my finger joints, so I drink more water, and I get better. It's so simple one might pass on the book or dismiss the info--that would be a mistake.

5-0 out of 5 stars It works!
The instructions for dealing with back problems are clearly explained. The pictures are worth a thousand words, if you don't want to read, then the pictures will show you how to do the exercises. You need 4 pillows-I think firm ones are the best.

My friend was complaining about lower back pain and I explained to him the exercises that were shown in the book.He tried it and said that his back pain went away.He was so amazed. Made a believer out of him!

Water: For Health, for Healing, for Life: You're Not Sick, You're Thirsty!
No joke... as far as I'm concerned my back painis essentially cured. It took me 3 attempts to get the exercise right . You must follow the directions exactly and rest 24 hrs between attempts. Immediately after the 3rd attempt , I was able to bend down without my knees buckling, and get up from a squatting position with strength in my legs.No pain in the morning. But I do have some pain if I sit in one position for awhile--can deal with that.Physical tx and chiropractic have been helpful but only remedial. This one exercise in the bookcured me. Follow directions about diet and water intake.I'm now telling all my friends. Purchase any of author's books as well. Best Rx for staying healthy in case we get national health insurance when we will not have access to anything.
This is an update(November 10,2008). I don't even think of my back anymore.I can sit in any position for any length of time.I still drink alot water but stopped all exercises because I have no pain. If the pain returns I will resume the exercises. This book is the best of all self-help medical books on the market!. A true miracle. Another update(March 17,2009). We had a bad winter and was able to shovel snow without any pain whatsoever. Of course, I did use proper posture. Stillno back pain of any sort and that includes from any posture for prolonged time period, Also I can walk as much as I want.
Hello again. It is November 21,2009). This past summer, I began getting 'twinges' in my back. No pain mind you, just a twinge or two.I figured my disc was starting to bulge again. So to play it safe, I did the exercise just once and the twinge vanished immediately after. Still no pain or twinge as of today.I am watching my diet and am drinking just water (except one cup of coffee in the morning) As I said in the beginning of this review, I am cured.Wouldn'tyou know it, national health care in probably going to crush us but water to the rescue (until that also is taxed along with botox...not funny!)
Hello again and good-bye after this last update. Today is Dec 14,2009. Here in Michigan it has snowed and iced x3 so far and all in the past 7 days. The snow was fluffy one day and slushy and heavy the other, the third was 1/4 inch of melting ice and heavy. I was able to do my snow shoveling by hand without any pain.I have not had any twinges since this past summer. Let merepeat. My back pain is cured because my disc(s) are back in place using this simple exercise. Try it, you'll like it. Au revoir mes amis
Ooops... spoke too soon. See my new review for Your Body's many Cries for Water re my resolution for a stiff neck. My lower back is still cured, though!!

5-0 out of 5 stars hope health and healing
Dr. Batman is my hero..... I went to the doc to get some pain meds and she sent me to the hospital to get an MRI and they wanted to operate but the neurologist said he would see me the next day . He gave me three choices, surgery, cortizol shots,or 18 months to 24 months to recover from 3 bulging and one ruptured disc #5. After a month in a chair laying on one side---- at the library I found the Body's many cries for water....gave me some HOPE , which I had lost. The first day...my back was improving...my emotions were improving and I felt better. Then I ordered some of his books online and they are GREAT! The back book is very helpful to understand what I am up against. The cancer book was very encouraging. Cancer can bring fear to anyone who doesn't understand there are some safe treatments available. And of course ,I had to buy the bodies many cries for water book. I will be ordering some more books soon and recommending them to friends , neighbors and family members.....Keep your mind open and receive the answers to your questions ,andreceive hope , help, and healing. Haven't used pain meds for 30 days...just salt and water. ... Read more

Product Description
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease, which affects 1% of the world's population. Patients with RA not only have a progressive and debilitating disease and severe functional impairment, but can also experience a reduced life expectancy due to frequent involvement of the major organ systems. This new edition of Rheumatoid Arthritis charts the profound changes in research and patientmanagement that have taken place over the last 5 years. Developments in molecular biology have dramatically increased insight into the inflammatory and destructive pathways of this complex disease. Over half a million patients have been successfully treated with biologic therapy and advances in imaging techniques have allowed increasingly early detection of disease onset. Rheumatoid factor is no longer the unchallenged gold standard autoantibody but has competition from the anti-citrulline antibodies. Environmental factors influencing both susceptibility and progression have been sought, and smoking has emerged as a powerful factor. Steady progress in genetics is finally being made and one day it may be possible to predict RA before onset of symptomatic disease. It is against this backdrop of dynamic developments that the new edition of Rheumatoid Arthritis publishes. ...
