I have tangled with our local school district many times and only NOW after reading this do I really have the tools i need to insist that my child get the care and provisions he needs. Thank you, thank you, for this book! Excellent resource!
While notionally the book is about framing individualised education plans (IEPs), the bulk of the book is taken up with explanations of Asperger syndrome, its manifestations, assessment and various interventions. Practically speaking, the sections on assessment will probably be of more interest to teachers than parents. There is a long chapter covering interventions and it is reasonably comprehensive. The author has clearly tried to position the book between the professional literature on interventions and the barely above anecdotal. And it works surprising well. Each of the inteventions is reviewed sparingly but fairly. At all times the emphasis is on listing advantages and disadvantages. The chapter on IEPs covers all the relevant requirements but isn't slow to point out the problems to be encountered. All in all I found this a very remarkable book, and worth at least twice its weight in gold. ... Read more Subjects: 1. Autism in children 2. Asperger's syndrome 3. Editorial Review Sharon Butler was working as a massage therapist and Hellerwork practitioner when shedeveloped carpal tunnel syndrome and tendonitis. Unable to sleep through the night because of the pain andconcerned about her livelihood, she built upon her knowledge of connective tissue anddeveloped a series of stretching exercises to gently relieve the tension in her body. After daily stretching inthis way, her pain soon subsided. To prove that these exercises weren't just a fluke, Butler intentionallyoverworked her body to bring back her symptoms. While this may not have been the smartest move, herstretching program again relieved her pain. The magic behind her powerful exercises is their focus on fascial tissue. Fascia, which is stronger thansteel, holds the body together. It wraps around muscle fibers, bones, and tendons. (If you've ever looked atan uncooked piece of chicken and noticed the glistening white layer over the meat, you've seen fascia.) Inpeople who overwork their bodies, the fascia hardens, a natural response to prevent future injury.Unfortunately, this stiffness worsens with repeated insults to the body. Muscles, nerves, and tendons tenseup and inflame even more and may even adhere to each other. Metabolic waste products can build up andbecome trapped instead of being carried away by the lymph system, and even more pressure is placed onthe affected body tissues. Enter Butler's exercises. The book is arranged to let you pick and choose the correct stretches to suit yourneeds. Too much typing, guitar playing, or gardening? Stiff neck, tingling fingers, sore upper arms, or allthree? However you developed your repetitive strain injury and whatever your upper-body symptoms (or ifyou're smart and you'd like to prevent such problems), there are multiple stretches in Conquering CarpalTunnel Syndrome to suit your needs. The book is arranged to help users develop a personalizedstretching program with more than 40 stretches for the upper body, forearms, wrists, fingers, and thumbs tochoose from. Butler thoroughly explains the importance of stretching and the correct (and incorrect) way todo it, and the exercises are lucidly illustrated.

Health and peace to you.
This book presents information on RSIs not found elsewhere. It begins with a concise but thorough discussion of the role of fascia in the development of RSIs. From my personal experience with over a dozen MDs, many doctors, even hand specialists, don't understand the role of fascia in these injuries. As a result, despite their good intentions, they can't effectively help many RSI sufferers. Neither can many well-intentioned physical therapists. Also, never before had I heard of the concept of the "stretch point," which is the secret of success for this program. I suspect that people who don't get results with this program have not applied this concept but are stretching too hard and fast, only worsening their symptoms. Besides helping you figure out which stretches to do for your symptoms, there's a "Prevention by Profession" section that lists various professions and the suggested stretches to do for them. It's not just computer users who get these injuries! If I was able to recover from my disabling RSI, so can you. Good luck with your recovery! ... Read more Subjects: 1. Carpal tunnel syndrome 2. Do not let the government schools take over, however. This manual is best used at home by loving parents and not by ADA pundits who care far more about their jobs than your precious little child. Sowell is writing about a group of children who are extremely intelligent AND who talk late. He is very clear that most children who talk late do not fit the "Einstein Syndrome" description. But one doesn't need to have a child who falls precisely in this category to take something useful from this book. The most important thing I got from it was to be skeptical of the various labels SLPs and school districts are so quick to put on children, and to seek out an independent evaluation for my son. That is, someone who had nothing to gain by labeling him, someone who would not be gaining a new client and therefore more income. Additionally, Sowell illuminates our society's quickness to label all children who don't fit into the norm as having a disorder, whether it's in play preferences, temperament or language development. I did see a lot of my son in this book - I had highlighted page after page and called my husband at work when I read about a 2 year old child who was moved to tears by Mozart, who could count to 100, spell various words, etc but not have a sequential conversation...could have been my 27 month old I was reading about. For that moment of catharsis, as well as the practical stuff, this book was invaluable to me.
My real quarrel with this book is philisophical -- that the authors don't want these children "labelled," as if labelling were a bad thing, and it does not offer suggestions about how to respond to the fact that a child might have this syndrome. If the author makes the very valid point that some children who talk late are bright or of average intelligence, he should not end the inquiry there. Some children in his study don't talk at all. They're silent. Some, like mine, are voluble -- they talk all the time. But until very late, you can't understand a word they're saying. Why is that? Is that just a random thing? Personally, I think that this syndrome is not a unified disorder, and a lot of the issues look like either Sensory Integration Issues or Asperger's Syndrome. But even if research shows this to be a unified disorder, now what? The authors are really suggesting that the parent merely clutch this book and smile when confronted by educators, passers-by, onlookers, grandparents, in-laws, friends, pediatricians, dentists and mechanics, who ask what's wrong with the child? Who throw diagnoses out? And what of the child with limited social skills? Is it responsible to indulge oneself in the avoidance of labelling, even though the existence of a label might allow children to get services outside a private setting? (Because even if a child will learn eventually to talk on his own fine, is it fair to have a 28-month-old in preschool who cannot make himself understood at all, if six months of speech therapy will fix the problem and doing nothing means the child will be unintelligible for twelve or eighteen months?). Is it fair to just smile and clutch the book if some of these children have social skills deficits that could be fixed with the same kind of training given children with Asperger's syndrome? Don't these children deserve to go through their toddler and preschool years without having all the adults in their lives look at them and shake their heads? Don't they deserve the same chance at a normative social life as any other cognitively normal, or gifted, child? Contrast this book with The Out-of-Sync Child, by Carol Kranowitz, which not only describes a little-known but legitimate syndrome, but also gives suggestions for treatment and even things that can be done at home to make life less uncomfortable for sufferers of sensory integration disorder. It may be that the Einstein Syndrome is a unified disorder, and the book makes an excellent case with regard to a discrete population of children who would otherwise be misdiagnosed. But the inquiry feels like watching someone begin a sentence and then stop talking too soon. ... Read more Subjects: 1. Child Care 2. Family & Relationships 3. Family / Parenting / Childbirth 4. I'd gotten to the point where I felt I was running out of time and options to help my vaccine-injured child. Lacking the background necessary to evaluate doctors' interpretations and recommendations and investing in the endless list of costly and what turned out to be mostly useless lab tests was becoming very frustrating. Dr. Cutler's book gave me the straightforward, scientifically-based, practical information I needed to properly diagnose my son's mercury poisoning and make educated decisions for his treatment. Learning to trust Andy implicity was inevitable when his insight proved to be right time and time again. His book not only helped me to determine the most accurate therapies for my son, but just as importantly, to avoid the potentially dangerous ones as well. The pieces of the puzzle had finally started to fit together. Dr. Cutler's book is empowering and inspiring. The amazing amount of formidaly comprehensive information, detailed protocols and painstakingly well organized cross referencing made it possible for me to confidently work alone or with minimal support from doctors in treating my child. We achieved more progress in my son in a few months than we had in all the previous years combined. I am forever indebted to Dr. Cutler. His gift has placed my son on the verge of recovery and I trust we will succeed in time.

One thing that bothered me was that the writing suggested a "uniform, one size fits all" approach and description of Asperger's. This can be misleading to readers. Still, it was a good faith effort and one that can be used to empower children on the spectrum and explain their "differences" in a clear cut, humane and frank way.

Any physician without this text on his/her shelves should not be treating persons injured by whiplash.
The nonsense coming from Canada this year, including the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) Cassidy study (April 2000) and anything that Robert Ferrari has written, and is likely to write (Whiplash "Encyclopedia"), is an utter shame. The author of the recent NEJM study (Cassidy) has been accused of falsifying data (Emma Bartfay, PhD vs. Cassidy), and the views of QTF and Ferrari on chronic whiplash have been refuted over and over again. Research in this field is of two types, with one out-weighing the other exponentially: insurance company-sponsored stuff such as Cassidy's, the "Quebec Task Force" or "QTF" study(1995), and much of the Ferrari literature IS VASTLY OUTWEIGHED by the other 95% of the university-based and engineering research that refutes it. This book, especially in its new edition (pending), is and will be the definitive treatise on whiplash-related injuries. It is not written for the layperson, and covers complex medical topics. However, for physicians and health care professionals working with the whiplash-injured, it is indispensable. When all the hubbub surrounding the latest weak studies from Canada subsides, Foreman and Croft's work will still be standing tall and unscathed. And that is because these two authors understand the difference between a strong study and a weak one. It is NOT true that you can use the research to prove anything. For example, the April 2000 NEJM study by Cassidy et al. states that when you remove the tort system, whiplash-injured persons miraculously heal faster. But upon closer inspection, it turns out that the authors of this study equate "recovery" with "return to work". They did not report on the physical exam findings of their research subjects at the time of claim closure (so-called "recovery"), so we do NOT really have an honest study. With Ferrari, he is just so out in left field that one cannot imagine how he survives. The only answer must be that insurance company money is paying for his "research". Is it? Ferrari has been refuted over and over again by Croft and Michael Freeman, DC, PhD, MPH in the literature (see SPINE 1998 and 1999). Ferrari is actually on record as saying that chronic whiplash pain is from a psychological disturbance. The 1995 QTF study is on record as saying that pain "is not harmful". These are doctors? Of course, if you have had a brain injury and have been diagnosed with MTBI (mild traumatic brain injury), which is often permanent, there is psychological disturbance. But this is not what Ferrari argues. He basically believes that the millions and millions of chronic whiplash sufferers world-wide are all faking it. Nikolai Bogduk, one of the top, if not the top, researchers in the world in the study of pain, has conclusively proved that whiplash injuries, even at VERY LOW SPEEDS (less than 5 mph) do damage the cervical zygapophyseal (facet capsules) or "z" joints of the neck, and that those injured in this way have chronic pain, and often full (actually too much) range of motion in their necks. The recent excellent crash tests by Ono, Kanno, Siegmund, Brault, Croft himself, and many, many others all confirm Bogduk's findings in a very conclusive way. The fact that "researchers" like Cassidy, Ferrari, Russell, and now the NEJM never cite these authors, who are the most respected in the field, is certainly suspect. I look forward to the next edition of this book, which should address all of the misinformation being propagated by the insurance industry and its representatives (do they fear an even larger class-action suit than big tobacco? You betcha!). Then we can all know the real science, well-written and more thoroughly referenced than any book on whiplash to date. ... Read more Subjects: 1.
