Product Description

Not long ago, Karen Duffy was sitting on top of the world and loving it. From calling bingo in a nursing home, she'd taken the express elevator to the penthouse overlooking success street. She worked as a VJ on MTV, as a spokesmodel for Revlon, as a film actress in Dumb and Dumber and other movies, and as a correspondent on Michael Moore's irreverent, Emmy-winning TV Nation. She was selected as one of People magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People in the World" in the same year she won the Ernest Borgnine Look-alike Contest.

But suddenly Duffy's whirlwind life of celebrity parties and socializing with friends from George Clooney to Jim Carrey to Richard Gere came to an abrupt, grinding halt when she was stricken with a serious illness in one of its rarest forms: sarcoidosis of the central nervous system. The disease left her partially paralyzed, in tremendous pain, and at times near death.

Although she had a serious disease, Duffy soon realized that the only way for her to survive was not to take the disease too seriously. Instead of hiding from life, she chose to run toward it. She learned to embrace the chaos of a life-threatening disease with a wit and humor that helped her to find the love of her life at a time when things seemed darkest.

Model Patient is a gripping, inspiring, and hilarious memoir that recounts the singular triumphs and tragedies of coping with a chronic, life-threatening disease.

Model Patient is an unforgettable, illumnating story that captures Duff's indomitable joie de vivre, revealing how she lives and how she has survived. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well she told you she was a wiseass
I have a chronic illness (17 years now) so I read a lot of books about all kinds of chronic illnesses. This is my 4th "illness memoir," and the first one I've enjoyed.
I noticed most of the scathing reviews here are by people who didn't finish the book.

I'm also a writer, so I understand that when someone writes a memoir they are *expected* to include their life- if not all of it, some portion of it- so we know who we are listening to and why we should care about what they went through, and how it fits in with the rest of their personality/ life story. That's just how memoirs go. If you want something chock full of info on a specific disease, that's a different kind of book.

So. This is a memoir. it's going to have a lot of personal detail. If that is not what you want to hear about, then get a more practical book. She told us up front she didn't want to write a feel-sorry-for-me book, so she tried to keep it light and funny. Occasionally, her humor is a little tasteless (like making fun of other "weird" diseases), but again, she warned us up front she was an incurable wiseass.

I felt Karen gave some good insight into how to keep your spirits up and how to deal with unpleasant necessities of being chronically and seriously ill.

I don't agree with her trashing all alternative medicine as quackery, but then it's a memoir, and because of that we know she is a devout Catholic and therefore doesn't question authority. She tells us all to deal with illness in our own way- in which case she ought to show a little more open mind towards other modes of treatment, especially given that her choices left her with a permanent morphine addiction and the need to get plastic surgery after having her face stretched out by steroids.

books that I think might be more uplifting to someone who is ill are Love Medicine and Miracles (written for cancer patients, but the principles apply to all diseases) Love, Medicine and Miracles: Lessons Learned about Self-Healing from a Surgeon's Experience with Exceptional Patientsand Anatomy of an Illness (Norman Cousins). Anatomy of an Illness as Perceived by the Patient: Reflections on Healing and Regeneration

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your time and money
If you are looking for a shallow book about the life of a model, MTV host and celebrity name dropper, this is the book for you. If you are looking for insight into life with Sarcoidosis, look elsewhere. As a person living with sarcoidosis, i hoped this book would have more insight into actual life with the disease. Instead we are taken into Duffs very self absorbed life, her famous friends, and her vanity driven antics. This book should be retitled "Life as a model, celebrity date, and MTV host. And by the way, a little about my Sarcoidosis".

4-0 out of 5 stars Disease and a positive outlook
Karen Duffy writes about her affliction with a somewhat uncommon disease in a biographical tale that combines a story about her interesting life with a story about her life dealing with the trials and tribulations of sarcoidosis,a chronic inflammatory disease that affects many different parts of the body. Her wonderful sense of humor and upbeat attitude make this book most entertaining as well as inspiring.

1-0 out of 5 stars I couldn't make myself finish it!
Duffy's storytelling is full of name dropping and "my life is so cool" immaturity that I couldn't make myself read more than a couple of chapters, and that was more painful than my sarcoidosis. This book is awful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Rachel Ray 30 or DUFF?!No contest!
After spending way too much time contemplating which RR tome to add to my collection I stumbled upon an episode of Party Planning with Dave Tuterra (sp?) and instantly decided to get Karen's new book instead.LOVE IT!

I am about 35 years old and I grew up thinking Karen Duffy was ABSOLUTELY thehottest and coolest VJ/ model on the planet!I wanted to live her life, have her job, and sleep with her boyfriends! If anyone could convince me to "play for the other team" it would have been her.My girlfriends and I even used her moto- "We're getting married in May- may the day never come!"

I actually cried when I heard about her illness which was regarded as terminal at the time.I read Model Patient- her book about her struggle with CNS Sarcoidosis and was amazed that the icon of party, rock and roll and pop culture could be such a strong and resilient person underneath.

Now, like the rest of us she has traded in the club scene and coctails for marriage and motherhood.
Her new book 'Slob in the Kitchen" is not for the refined foodie that wants to spendhours preparing a jaw dropping meal, but for people that need to make dinner.Preferably one that the kids will eat. Highly recommend! ... Read more
