Product Description
Scurvy is known to be one of the most gruesome pathological phenomena that, in the course of centuries, has made innumerable victims. Long distance seafaring operations, war zones, prisons and crop failures all created breeding grounds for the vitamin C deficiency disease, which was commonly characterized by swelling and bleeding gums and internal haemorraghes in the limbs. While the history of scurvy is rather well-known from a Western perspective, the higher proclivity of Asian peoples to scurvy, in comparison to Europeans, Polynesians and other peoples, as proven in recent biochemical studies, compells historians to broaden that horizon and look for scurvy in China and beyond. The purpose of this book is to trace the history of the disease in China, Japan and Southeast Asia and to highlight the ways in which peoples from these regions in pre-modern and early modern times dealt with provisioning in their seafaring and military enterprises. This cross-cultural quest for scurvy and food supplies, involving such areas as maritime and military history and the medical traditions from East and West, is ultimately meant as an attempt to elucidate whether historical sources can confirm the biochemical findings. ... Product Description

On June 4, 1741, Georg Wilhelm Steller set sail from Avacha Bay in Siberia on the St. Peter, under the command of Vitus Bering. The crew was bound for America on the last leg of an expedition whose mission was to explore, describe, and map Russia’s vast lands from the Ural Mountains across Siberia to the Kamchatka Peninsula, and possibly lay claim to the northwest coast of America – if they could find it, for no European had ever reached America by this route. Officially, Steller was the ship’s mineralogist, but in practice he was its doctor, minister, and naturalist as well. Appointed to the expedition in 1737 by the Academy of Science in St. Petersburg, he was sworn to secrecy concerning any discoveries.

Making judicious use of Steller’s richly detailed journals and liberal use of illustrations and maps, Ann Arnold allows the reader to join Steller on this fascinating voyage and its final dangerous mission, which left half the crew dead and the rest suffering from scurvy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful read in the vein of similar children's books on Darwin
I found Sea Cows, Shamans, and Scurvy to be an ideal fit for our little homeschool unit study on explorers, navigation and natural history. We needed a change from tales of American and British explorers and hadn't read much about Siberia previously so this fit the bill. I picked this title by chance from our library and was quickly attracted by its highly readable language and quirky pen and ink illustrations. Great as a read aloud too...but if you have highly-sensitive little children, you should be aware that the author mentions disease and death.

Readers who enjoyed The Voyage of the Beetle by Anne Weaver may enjoy this book too. ... Read more

Product Description
Secret Scurvy Dog Society members relate stories, many humorous, some pointedly not, of life on US Navy destroyers during the Korean, Vietnam, and Gulf Wars.

"The proudest Marine and the toughest SEAL will tell you, “… destroyers? Now, there's the REAL Navy.” Find out why in the pages of Scurvy Dogs, Green Water and Gunsmoke written by the true men of destroyers; those greyhounds of the sea; those TIN CAN SAILORS." -- John J. Gobbell, author of The Brutus Lie, The Last Lieutenant and A Code For Tomorrow

"This is how I remember my time in the Fleet - stories, people, incidents. A navy has ships, but men bring those ships to life. Service in the Navy is exciting, hard, funny, boring, and many other things best told by the men who were there.Give this book to someone who may join the Navy, and they'll get a better picture of shipboard life than from any recruiter.Give this to someone who's been in the Navy, his eyes will get misty, and then he'll start telling his own stories. And of course, these stories are all absolutely true." -- Larry Bond, author of Red Phoenix, Dangerous Ground and The Mighty Fallen

“Deck apes, snipes, and powder monkeys alike will just eat up these evocative and entertaining tales of life in the United States destroyer fleet. Smartly told, irreverent and fun, Scurvy Dogs, Green Water and Gunsmoke upholds the honor of the surface navy and captures the big-hearted spirit of the tin can sailor of every generation. This book belongs on every Navy man’s shelf.” -- James D. Hornfischer, author of Ship of Ghosts and The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors

5-0 out of 5 stars Yeargh! Tis Brillant! Yeargh!
Hilarious and fun, Scurvy Dogs is fun romp following the lives of olde time pirates dropped in modern day America with humorous consequences.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm Biased...
I'm biased, since I'm one of the book's creators. We had a lot of fun working on this book, and I think it shows. If you're a fan of Monty Python, Adult Swim, or the Simpsons, you'll probably find something to enjoy in this collection, as long as you can learn to live with my "no-I-didn't-go-to-Art-School-I-got-a-regular-college-degree" art-style, and our "just-trying-to-make-each-other-laugh-so-hard-we-snort-Fanta-out-of-our-noses" writing style.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun indie humor
While not exactly a masterpiece, Scurvy Dogs is an always entertaining and clever series. The writing is similar in many ways to that of Adult Swim cartoons or popular webcomics, but always manages to be unpredictable and un-cliche in its own way. The art isn't spectacular, but personally I feel it adds to the comic, if it were too well drawn the art would clash with the slapdash, pop culture slant of the writing. Definetly recommended. ... Destroyer veterans release short story collection Fifteen members of the Secret Scurvy Dog Society relate their own accounts, many humorous and some pointedly not, of life at sea on U.S. Navy destroyers during the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Cold War. Beginning with the question - Why the Navy? - and ending with reflections on how their experiences during hard lives at sea came to be considered cherished memories, these men, both officers and enlisted, tell the quintessential Sea Stories of the latter half of the 20th century. Scurvy Dogs, Green Water and Gunsmoke is the first joint effort for these writers, most of whom have been published previously in the Tin Can Sailor, the journal of the National Association of Destroyer Veterans. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Anthology of Destroyer Sea Stories
Volume I and Volume II together contain 101 short destroyer sea stories contributed by 18 different U. S. Navy destroyer veterans some who were young enlisted, some who were career chiefs and some who were officers when they served (scurvy dogs).Readers with no Navy experience have told me they were enjoyable.Readers with some Navy experience were enthusiastic. Of course I may be a bit prejudiced, I was one of the 18 contributing authors.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a hoot
For anyone who was in the Navy, wanted to be in the Navy or knows someone who was in the Navy, these two books are great.

The two volumns are collections of brief, 1st person articles about what life was really like for destroyer sailors, widely seen by most of the Navy as somewhat odd group of people. Written by both officers and enlisted men, they give outsiders a glimpse of what goes on on these small -- in comparison with most of the rest of the Navy -- cramped, uncomfortable ships.

It sorts of gives you an idea of life at sea, periods of intense boredom interspaced by moments of hilarity, or panic.

I've read a lot of naval history, but nothing gives a better picture of what it's really like than Scurvy Dogs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scurvy Dogs, Green Water and Gunsmoke
Scurvy Dogs, Green Water and Gunsmoke: Fifty Years in US Navy Destroyers, Volume 2
"Destroyers, now there's the real Navy!"Gobbell's review comments about Marines and SEALS might not be exactly gospel, but it's close enough.Learning about Tin Can Swabs, you learn they're pretty much grunts in a metal and aluminum AO (Area of Operations) and steel foxholes darting around the worlds ponds. They got some really cool rifles too!
Shoot clean into next week.
This ain't the Gator Navy dropping grunts off on beaches we don't like. It's about the Navy we don't get to see.The ones they arm.
This collection of sea stories is worth the read. For you other Jarheads and Tridents out there who haven't gotten past the pop up books yet, get some help and look at the preface! The proceeds go to the Navy / Marine Corps relief Society in the honor and name of a fallen brother.
So make an effort to get to the PX and get it, stow it in you AWOL bag!It appeals to me as a book that will travel well and long even in a ruck.It will be passed around multiple times and probably tours as well. There's that many laughs and almost that much entertainment in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Long live the destroyermen
Pick an ocean, any ocean. Add a few Navy destroyers, throw in a healthy dose of salt spray, then brace yourself. Such a concoction breeds unique ship crews who are renowned as colorful characters with irreverent lifestyles. Now some of their own have jumped ship and penned these clever sea stories.
These tales, some taller than others, offer unique insights into life aboard the "greyhounds of the sea." A good read. ... Read more

The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
Medical theory and practice of the 1700s developed rapidly, as is evidenced by the extensive collection, which includes descriptions of diseases, their conditions, and treatments.
