4-0 out of 5 stars Helped me a great deal
I found that using this workbook along with my therapist to be the safest way to do it.It brings up a great deal of emotional baggage... and doing it alone can be scary. It will trigger you.
But the outline is great.. from one step to another.
I highly recommend this workbook.Understanding Self-Injury: A Workbook for Adults

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
This workbook has helped me so much.It allows you to sort out and break down your feelings about SI.Working through it actually helped me to understand a lot about the reasons that I self-injure, which helps me to deal with the actual issues. It's completely nonjudgemental, but it does give alternatives to try based on the different ways you might use self-injury.I wish I could find another book as helpful as this. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat Helpful!
I am a practicing mental health therapist.I deal with adults and adolescence that have a history of or are currently dealing with self injury. This book offered some good insight into self injury and treatment options/tips when dealing with a person who self injurers.I was somewhat disappointed in the lengthy explanation of all the disorders. However, I am reading this book from a therapist point of view and not a person who is trying to recover.

Overall; I felt this book had some good insight but would have liked more focus on the treatment and outcome rather than the different types of disorders.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and uplifting
"Am I Brain Damaged" by Lori Faitel is the kind of book that leaves you amazed at what people are capable of accomplishing. This book recounts Lori's inspiring story of the devastating loss of her entire earlier life, the result of an auto accident, and her remarkable journey to recovery and normalcy. It is a book to inspire us all, and could be a wonderful ray of hope to those who are living through a similar challenge. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Touched
I was very touched by Lori's book. I appreciate the time she took to write her experiences. I think her book is good for the caretakers of a brain injured person. My 22 year old son became brain injured two years ago. We are still in the limbo stage. Lori's book not only gave me some insight on what my son may be feeling but also it gave me hope that there is more healing to come. Thank you Lori.

5-0 out of 5 stars Friend of Victim Therapy
Friend of Victim Therapy was a new therapy coined by the Author and it helped me understand the significance of this book.My eyes were opened while reading through this book.I had so little knowledge & understanding of the hardwork & struggle necessary to recover from a head injury.I have compassion now instead of feeling akward.I know this will benefit those who have had a head injury yet I believe it will benefit their family & friends even more.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational
Am I Brain Damaged is an amazing story of one woman's struggle to return to a normal life after a terrible car accident. The courage and determination it took to accomplish such a feat is truly inspirational. Congratulations Lori on all of your success!

Product Description
Running is possibly as close to a universal sport as you can get. Runners come in all shapes, sizes and ages, and both sexes. They may be ace Olympic stars, orienteers, marathoners, triathletes, ultra-distance runners, club athletes, fun runners or occasional joggers. Some are fitness fanatics for whom running is an end in itself. Others seek through running fitness for other sports. Many run because it is a convenient way of keeping slim and reducing the risk of heart disease. Some enjoy the challenge of racing, some enjoy the camaraderie of running in a friendly group, while others relish the solitude of training alone. The common factor between track star, struggling tyro and fun runner is vulnerability to injury. Running seems simple enough, and safe enough. Yet it carries an in-built and well-defined risk. Too many runners injure themselves because they do not understand how injuries can happen, and why they might happen to them. Now Vivian Grisogono, the chartered physiotherapist specialist in sports injuries, describes how runners get injured, what they should do about it, and, most importantly, how the prudent runner can avoid harm. This book contains all the information a runner or running coach needs, both to avoid the pitfalls of running, and to use running for its best fitness effects. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Jan Sutton's Second Edition
Jan Sutton has been a leading advocate for better understanding and treatment of self-injury. She maintains two websites in the U.K. that provide many helpful suggestions and also assist caregivers. The second edition of this book has an attractive cover consisting of artwork by a self-injurer in recovery. Beyond the cover, the book clearly differentiates suicide from self-injury. It also provides many useful suggestions as to how to overcome self-injury. The book is informal in style and is unique in that it gives an equal voice to self-injurers themselves. The book is interspersed with many autobiographical statements, poems, and artwork from self-injurers. Jan Sutton's compassion and respect for self-injurers is clear throughout the book.

I highly recommend this book for self-injurers, their significant others, and helping professionals.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for all martial artists, especially instructors and coaches
"The Bare Essentials Guide For Martial Arts Injury Care and Prevention" by Trish Bare Grounds should be read by all martial art instructors and coaches, and is a handy reference to have at hand in any school.I'd encourage anyone involved in martial arts to give it a read, but especially instructors and coaches. The book contains basic knowledge, and many martial artists that are the level of instructor or coach will be familiar already with some here, but that does not mean it shouldn't be reviewed and kept handy for a reference. It wont' turn you into a doctor, but will provide the fundamentals which should be known by instructors and coaches.

The first chapter is on injury prevention. It makes sense, prevention is always better than treating an injury. The bulk of this chapter is on stretching. There are some basic guidelines for stretching, and some of the most common stretches are illustrated. No where near as complete as texts that focus solely on stretching, but good information nonetheless. There is also some good advice regarding equipment, workout surfaces, proper footwear, protective equipment, and jewelry in regards to injury prevention.

Chapter two focuses on strength and conditioning. The second edition expanded on the first edition that was less than 10 pages. However, much more information on this topic is found in other sources, but it is good to be included here because strength training and conditioning can help prevent injuries.

The third chapter is on eating to compete.Basics on eating geared to competition. Some good tips, but again very limited compared to resources that focus solely on eating and performance nutrition.

Chapter four was injury care, and this is one of the chapters I bought the book for.The chapter contains taping techniques for the ankle, feet, toes, shins, knee, elbow, wrist & hand, and fingers & thumbs.

Chapter five continues with the things I wanted from this book with care of injuries.Topics include discussions on sprains, strains, ruptures, types of fractures, ice & heat, and just all around good advice on how to care for a plethora of basic injuries.Like some of the earlier chapters, additional information was added to the second edition.

Chapter six was about some common conditions that may affect athletes. It was fairly short and provided some basics regarding asthma, diabetes, epilepsy and seizure disorders, and migraine headaches. If you have a student with one of these conditions, I'd suggest learning more than this book provides, but this does at least give you a little knowledge.

The seventh chapter contains some forms and information for school owners, including what your first aid kit should contain.Chapter eight is a few pages long and provides some information on organizing a sports medicine team for your tournament. And for the second edition there was a ninth chapter on pregnancy and the martial arts added before the conclusion.

I'm a firm believer that instructors and coaches should learn about injury care and prevention, and this book provides a good start.A couple of the chapters don't provide nearly as much as other resources probably already on many martial artists' book shelf, especially on stretching. However, the chapters on taping and injuries are must reading and not found in that many other sources. While I think the book could have gone a bit more in depth, I still think it is a very good resource and recommend it to all martial artists and especially those coaching or instructing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Martial Arts Injury prevention
This book is in the category of "must have" for every Black Belt and dojo-dojang owner. The thorough coverage of pre-workout stretching, diet and injury care is something that senior belts in every school should know. While I learned much of the contents of the book in my years practicing Tae Kwon Do, this book makes a very good quick reference, with great pictures of just how to treat most of the common injuries.

From the resurrectionafterrape website: Looking for a book about rape that's not depressing or boring, but doesn't avoid deeper emotions and questions either? Resurrection After Rape is a deeply-moving, powerful guide for women recovering from rape. What sets this apart from other books on rape is that this one isn't written only by a therapist; it's a collaboration between a therapist (and a male, at that!), and dozens of rape survivors who contribute their insights, journals, and art. Reading this book is like having your own room full of women who have succeeded in rape recovery, all of whom offer their guidance. Issues addressed include shame, depression, substance abuse, self-injury, spirituality, medical care, PTSD, flashbacks, and panic attacks. Contains the journals, art, and stories of dozens of women who have successfully recovered from rape. This is not a book of cliches and superficial suggestions; it acknowledges the real anguish of rape trauma while offering real hope and answers through the first-person narratives of dozens of women who have actually used its methods to recover. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on the topic I've read
I've read many books on the topic in my personal recovery journey. I almost didn't try this one because I had just about given up hope. I got a copy, and it blew me away. In fact, I wore out my first one, and just bought a second copy from Amazon to replace it. Let me caution readers: this is a tough book to work through. Don't buy it hoping that flipping through the pages will fix your trauma; it's a rigorous, challenging approach to healing. As they say in AA, "You have to work it to make it work." Don't buy it without being prepared to finally sit down and take on these issues. If you are ready to give serious effort to your recovery, then you're ready for Resurrection After Rape.

3-0 out of 5 stars My experience with this book
I have been trying to pursue different methods of recovery and treatment for the past few months. This is not a bad book by any means, but I was a little let down after reading so many glowing reviews. I am happy it has worked so wonderfully for other people, but my experience with it was not as great, thus the three star rating - because my review reflects my experience only. I have revised this review to say as much, as it may not have been clear in the previous one I submitted.

I feel like this book was written with someone else in mind. It's like being a fly on the wall for a therapy session formulated for a person who is very different from me. There is a lot of talk about overcoming promiscuous sex and shirking the urge to self-medicate with alcohol or drugs. If you do not do these things, then there is a very huge chunk of advice here that you may have to skip over. If you do struggle with alcohol/drugs/promiscuity, however, this book handles that information in a non-judgmental manner and you will feel more at home with it than I did.

I would also like to point out that when the author says that the book is meant to be used alongside counseling/therapy, he means it. I know that some women out there may be able to handle this book, the journal assignments, and the memories they dig up on their own... but if you attempt these exercises, you need to have a support network that can help you or come to you immediately if you need them. One of the assignments is to write out your story and how it makes you feel in excruciating detail. Unless overseen by a counselor of some kind, this can be a very dangerous thing to try and tackle by yourself. In fact, when I finally got around to seeing a professional, I described the exercise to her and she said, "Not only is that not necessary for every rape victim, but it's very dangerous for a victim to try that assignment unsupervised."

There are some anecdotes that struck me as a little out of place, but as I no longer own this book I cannot cite specific examples. There is a chapter that deals with religion (specifically God) as well, but my faith was not mentioned anywhere, so this was another chapter that I had to skip through. If you are into faith-based healing and believe in a (most likely Christian) God, this shouldn't be an issue for you, however.

However, the book is not all bad; far from it. Aside from the above, I don't have any complaints. The journal work is very thought provoking and there are many good lessons to be learned. The chapter on "stuck points" was particularly helpful to me, as were a lot of the letters from the patients the author has seen. This book is what convinced me to finally seek professional help. This book HAS helped me. But it also made me feel "othered", and made me aware of the fact that my best option is to find treatment that is especially tailored to help ME, rather than trying to be a catch-all.

I will say that I did love most of the journal assignments and they helped me get out a lot of feelings I was burying or having trouble dealing with. I am a survivor now, and this book helped me to find the treatment that works best for me - it did not do it on its own, as I somewhat naively expected it to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent -BUY IT
This book is up among the greats. I can barely begin to describe how it has helped me to move forward in such a short space of time.

The author is honest and explains things very well. This is a difficult journey and he makes no light of this fact. But he helps nurture your journey with compassion. I'd recommend visiting the groups mentioned in the book too; they and the survivors that frequent them are what keep you motivated during the dark nights.

Don't be put of by a male author; he understands and he writes it better than any female author I have seen so far.

Be brave and reward your survivor self with this book..you definitely won't regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very important read for survivors!!
I say this book is important not only because it's important to heal from rape, but because it addresses many rape myths and gives a very clear picture of what to expect during recovery. I think many people turn away from healing when times get tough. If I had a nickle for every time I heard, "I thought your therapist was supposed to help you feel BETTER, not worse" I'd have some cash on hand! Rape recovery is different than marital counseling, substance abuse therapy, or any other kind of therapy. It's a unique process... one in which not a large number of psychologists/therapists/counselors are trained to handle. That poses a unique problem for the survivor. Where do you go for help when you don't know what effective help looks like? This book will help you. When you don't know where to turn after a hard session and you don't understand why the hurt gets worse before it gets better, this will gently explain and then help with suggestions to cope. It is helpful if you are working with a therapist, but also is beneficial for someone just looking for answers and support.

When I started to read RaR, I was amazed. I was so awestruck with the insight to my perceptions, that I took a highlighter and just highlighted everything I felt pertained to me. After only 3 pages I stopped. I stopped because it was getting rediculous! The highlighted portions were far more than those lines I left unmarked. This was not all for not... I looked back at those pages and it was then I realized just how NOT alone I was. For me, that's what this book has helped to do. Bring me back into the community of people I had stepped away from and recognize that it was up to me to take this place that I'm in and make a road out of it. The road doesn't end, but it gets less rocky!!! And the winding, bumpy path behind is not gone, just incorporated. All of course, with hard work!

Product Description
What happens when you mix a very traumatic childhood with a very fed up teen looking for a way to cope? You can create a psychopath.

Cassidy was like every other normal teenager, except for a few major things. She was neglected by her mother, ill-treated by her father, alienated by her peers, and had a rather gruesome way of dealing with displacement issues.

Cassidy’s only friends were in her ant farm until she is befriended by a young, eccentric, witty Anna. And a handsome, confident, knowledgeable Jonathan; who initially set out to help her and support her. Cassidy’s trust issues starts to interfere with her friendship, and suddenly her routine way of coping with pain begins to manifest into something much more disturbing and horrid.

Follow Cassidy through her bizarre tunnel of illusions and nightmares, to a place not many people are familiar with . . . The dissociative mind.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wish I had read reviews first.
I would have to definately agree with the first review of this book. This was the biggest waste of money I have spent in a long time. Story was so far fetched, so poorly told. The idea of the book was very interesting to me but the writing was just not there. Please, look for another book.

1-0 out of 5 stars waste of time
I'm not sure why I even finished this book. For starters, the glaring grammatical errors left me wondering if the author had completed even a high school level English class, and I'm shocked it was even published without additional editing. The author seems to have particular difficulty conjugating the verb "to see." For example, "Cassidy seen [sic] that the cover of the letter read: 'To Anna, from J." Where this an isolated incident, I would attribute it to an overlooked typo. However, the author consistently uses the past participle instead of the preterite form of this verb. While I found this error the most frustrating, the book was also littered with misplaced commas and awkward phrasing that made it difficult and somewhat painful to read.

The story, at least, was interesting, although at times it became too bizarre to believe. However, I found certain aspects of Cassidy's development infuriating. In particular, I found her move from self-injurious to antisocial behaviors quite troubling. For the vast majority of self-injurers, torturing animals does NOT provide the same relief as self-injury does. In fact, I've never heard even a single piece of anecdotal evidence, let alone actual research to support this view of self-injury. This portrayal only serves to perpetuate the unjustified fear of self-injurers as being prone to inflict violence on others. As a former self-injurer myself, I found this aspect of the story appalling.

Then there's the "information" at the end of the book. I noticed the author sited no references for this section. I think she should have done some research before trying to write on these subjects. I'm not sure where she got her information about the "average self-harmer," but her claims about the socioeconomic background and intellectual ability of self-harmers don't seem to be supported by any scientific research I could find. And her claim that "it's usually associated with Dissociative Disorders" is simply ridiculous. Some of the most common factors that are thought to contribute to self-injury are depression and low self-esteem. While self-injury is more common among people with dissociative disorders than in the general population, the majority of self-injurers don't have a dissociative disorder.

The section on dissociative disorders was almost unreadable. I didn't notice any factual errors in this section, but I was also unable to find a single complete sentence.

I'm not sure why the section titled "Words to Know" was even there. None of the terms listed had anything to do with the book, and none of the definitions were at all informative. I'm also not entirely clear on why "sociopath" was described as "offensive" but "psychopath" was not.

Even the list of resources for self-injurers was ridiculous. There are a lot of excellent books about self-injury. The DSM is not one of them. I don't see how books intended to aid medical professionals in diagnosing psychiatric disorders will be of much help to people struggling with self-injury.

4-0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too
I had a hard time reading this book.It is very dark, like a car accident where I didn't want to look but had to keep looking anyway.

Cassidy is a teenager who has a lot of issues. She doesn't fit in with the rest of the crowd in high school. Her mother left when she was ten and she is being abused by her dad.Her only friends are the ants that she keeps in an ant farm in her room.

Cassidy has trust issues and cuts herself to make herself feel real.As the story proceeds, she has become friends with a quirky girl named Anna and a handsome young man named Jonathan. Both Jonathan and Anna want to help Cassidy, but Cassidy can't accept their help or friendship.Soon she slips into a more disturbing way of dealing with her problems.

This is a good book for readers who want to understand more about psychopaths.I liked the sections in the back of the book which define disorders and vocabulary. If that wasn't there the book wouldn't have the impact that it does.I recommend this book, but not for the squeamish.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Sky is Falling...but it's a good thing!
This book was much different than the writer's previous titles.Instead of a fun atmosphere with a little dramatic spice, this story is filled with mystery, intrigue, and childhood morality. It has been a little over a year after reading "Threes a Crowd" and this story was a 180 from what the reader would expect, however, that is a good thing!

The Story -

The story was a rollercoaster of excitement and dramatic experiences for the characters. The author expertly intertwines fiction and real life experiences that are relatable to youth and old alike.

The Characters -

The characters come to life. This is a commonality between the author's books and is strong, if not stronger, than her previous works. Each of the characters faces their own personal dilemmas and is artfully rendered realistically.

The Plot -

I wont ruin the plot for you, but I guarantee that it is packed full of twists, turns, and surprises that you don't want to miss.

Enjoyment -

It's not a very long book so it won't take you more than two weeks to read over it, but you'll be like everyone else I have spoke to and want more of it.Just like you've been wanting more Threes a Crowd, your going to want another sequel to this book.So many questions are unanswered, so many mysteries still remain...your going to be craving for another book!

Final Judgment -

Give it a try! It's for mostly aimed towards teens, however, adults would like this book a lot.I think the book not only has entertainment value, but also has a wealth of resources for friends, family, or victims to self abuse and domestic abuse.

Product Description
While laws affecting personal injury have not changed dramatically since Winning Your Personal Injury Claim was first published, this new edition shares information consumers asked for after reading the first edition. The author now begins the book with a full overview of the personal injury litigation process, focusing especially on the important events that occur immediately after an accident. He stresses that the claim actually begins at that point and that one must be prepared to deal with all aspects of the situation. He provides suggestions for checklists that can be carried with you, as well as other valuable information to have on hand.

This new edition provides a more complete, step-by-step guide to pursuing a personal injury case without formal representation. It includes information regarding the different types of letters that need to be written--and the order in which they are sent--when a claim is being pursued. Many easy-to-use, blank tear-out forms are available in the back of the book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor book, Nolo's is much better
This book was vague on the details and organization I needed to review my case. I purchased it together with NOLO's book, "How to Win Your Personal Injury Claim" by Joseph Matthews. The NOLO book was MUCH better.

This book offered no firm formula to help evaluate your case. That may be a safer legal bet, since cases aren't always straightforward. The NOLO book, however, offered a very common method to evaluate the case value. While the insurance companies are not allowed to absolutely use that formula, it is a very good starting point.

This book is too generalized to help the way the NOLO book does.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just when I thought it couldn't get any better, it did.
When I read the original, I knew I was reading a classic. I thought, wow, great work, brilliant and interesting writing, I now know what I need to win my own lawsuit, but what more could be said on the topic? I was wrong. Dead wrong.
Evan Aidman updates this classic work with relevant and pertinent information for todays fast moving world. If you want to win your personal injury claim, or, if you are just in the mood for a great absorbent read, buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A helpful guide through the lawsuit process
this book helped me plan my own small personal injury case and ended up saving me the cost of paying a 1/3 attorneys fee on a 15K recovery- one that a lawyer would not have been able to exceed under the policy limits applicable to my case.

I recommend both books as they are well written, easy to follow and helped me save alot of money from my claim. Both books are recommended if you are trying to settle a claim by yourself without using an attorney. The books helped me to save over 8000 dollars on my car accident/personal injury claim.
