5-0 out of 5 stars Just when I thought it couldn't get any better, it did.
When I read the original, I knew I was reading a classic. I thought, "wow, great work, brilliant and interesting writing, I now know what I need to win my own lawsuit, but what more could be said on the topic". I was wrong. Evan Aidman updates this classic work with relevant and pertinent information for todays fast moving world. If you want to win your personal injury claim, or, if you are just in the mood for a great absorbent read, buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A helpful guide through the lawsuit process
this book helped me plan my own small personal injury case and ended up saving me the cost of paying a 1/3 attorneys fee on a 15K recovery- one that a lawyer would not have been able to exceed under the policy limits applicable to my case.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book from Amazon
.
.
I bought 2 books on Amazon this one and Car Accident Secrets Vol 1.5 - Both books helped me solve my accident/personal injury.

I recommend both books as they are well written, easy to follow and helped me save alot of money from my claim. Both books are recommended if you are trying to settle a claim by yourself without using an attorney. The books helped me to save over 8000 dollars on my car accident/personal injury claim.

5-0 out of 5 stars A REALLY HELPFUL EASY READ
I had a small case and didn't want to turn a 1/3 of it over toa lawyer so I got this book. It explained step by step what to expect and do and I was able therefore to maximize value and minimize effort on my own claim.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is about managing a lawyer, not DIY.
This book is definitely not a book for the do it yourself legal person. It is a book length sales pitch about why you need a lawyer and what to do with one once you have one. It's a well written book with lots of information but it is not what it is billed to be. ... Read more

Product Description
This video investigates the phenomenon of self-injury. Self-injury refers to a pattern in which a person harms himself or herself by cutting or even burning parts of the body to relieve stress from pent-up emotions. Many people suffer from this usually secretive activity. Typically they have endured unusual and stressful events or abusive family situations, and have resorted to self-injury as an unhealthy coping mechanism. The video and print package demystifies this often misunderstood problem by offering candid interviews with cutters and their families, as well as commentary by noted experts in the field. One interviewee describes her cutting as a form of self-punishment, but also as a strategy to keep her emotions from spiraling out of control. Viewers learn about the symptoms and causes of self-injury from a psychologist along with effective knowledge to sufferers and their families. Teachers Resource Book includes class worksheets to extend students investigation of this subject. Running Time: 25 minutes; Close Captioned; Includes: Video and Teacher's Resource Book; Grades 8 through College. ... Read more

Description:
International surveys of occupational injuries among seafarers have so far been missing. It was the aim to test the method of self-report of injuries and length of time at risk during the latest duty period and second to study the injury incidence rate among seafarers by use of the method. A pilot study was conducted (n=1068) in Finland, Denmark, the Philippines, Croatia and Spain using self-completed questionnaires with questions about the person, the ship, the duration of latest duty period and injuries. The duration of the self-reporting duty period was in the Danish part compared with information from the crew register of the Maritime Authority. For seafarers from merchant ships in the Danish sub-study there was acceptable correspondence between the information from the seafarers and the Maritime Authority, but not when referring to ferries and non-specified types of ship. Unadjusted and adjusted injury incidence rates-ratios (IRRs) based on number of injuries per number of work hours were calculated. Adjusted IRRs for ordinary seamen/officers: IRR=2.43 (95% CI: 1.25-4.72); for age <35/35+ years: IRR=1.97 (1.02-3.81); length of tour: 117 days or longer compared with <117 days: IRR=0.46 (95% CI: 0.22-0.95); 57-70 working hours per week compared with <57h: IRR=1.26 (0.48-3.29), 71+h compared with <57h: IRR=2.12 (0.84-5.36). Non-significant IRRs >1.00 were found for ships under 10,000 GT compared with larger ships and for own flagged ships compared with ships under flag of convenience. In conclusion, more than 70h of work per week was related to a higher rate of injuries for seafarers on merchant ships, but the result was not statistically significant. Self-report of the duration of the latest tour of duty is useful for seafarers from merchant ships with short-term employments, but not for ferries and other, non-specified types of ship with other or permanent employment. ... Description:
A variety of variables have been found to augment perceived social validity of behavioral interventions. In the present study, potential effects of behavioral function were evaluated. Sixty students inexperienced in work with people with mental retardation, and 60 experienced staff watched one of two carefully matched acted videos depicting self-injury maintained by attention or escape from task demands. Participants were also told whether the self-injury depicted typically led to mild or severe consequences for the person filmed. Participants rated six interventions in terms of their acceptability and effectiveness for the behavior depicted. A hierarchy of acceptability was replicated: reinforcement-based procedures were rated as more acceptable and effective. There were also effects of behavior severity and rater experience. However, few effects of behavioral function were found. Potential implications of staff undifferentiated attitudes towards functional treatments are discussed. ... Read more

Description:
This study uses hospital discharge data, death certificates and medical examiner data for New Jersey for 1999-2001 to investigate whether fatal and non-fatal self-injury exhibit similar geographic patterns. Findings show that the demographic characteristics of individuals committing fatal and non-fatal self-injury are quite different. Furthermore, attempted and completed suicides have a somewhat different geographical pattern. Municipality-level determinants of suicide and non-fatal self-injury were estimated in two separate models. While measures of isolation such as low population density and high proportions of households with only one member were predictive of completed suicides, non-fatal self-injury was related to unemployment and median age. Both types of self-injury were more common in municipalities which lost population between 1990 and 2000, and where divorce rates were high. Population-based suicide prevention efforts should be aided by the knowledge that although there are some similarities in the spatial pattern of completed and attempted suicides, there are some important differences in significant determinants. ... Description:
A reduced pain sensitivity has been found in eating disorder (ED) patients. These patients often show various types of self-injurious behaviors (SIB) which some experience as painful, while others report analgesia during episodes of SIB. How can we explain these differences? We studied female ED patients (N=185) of whom 84 had admitted some form of SIB in their recent history. The presence/absence of pain report during SIB was not significantly related to the type of ED. The longer the history of SIB, the less pain was reported. Ratings of dissociation and traumatic experiences were higher in patients who did not experience pain while injuring themselves. We discuss several biopsychosocial explanations for these findings with suggestions for future research. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful & Inspiring
CAPTIV is a very accessible book about S. Marie's healing journey through child abuse, its painful and challenging consequences, and the light she creates at the end of the tunnel. The author's extraordinary gift is to say so much about her experience, with tremendous insight, in so few words.

This book should be required reading, not only for every psychologist, therapist and university psychology student, but for every parent. For after reading this book, few parents could possibly perpetrate on their innocent child, the devastating damage that results from physical, emotional and sexual abuse.

Buy this book. You will see the world in a new way, and be better for it.
