Product Description
This Is Sex is an objective, illustrated look at the most recent phenomenon in addiction: sex. It provides a historical perspective, exploring sexual attitudes through the ages — from the scanty cavortings of Adam and Eve to the Kama Sutra of the East. Nothing is sacred, no taboo is left unchallenged, and facts about sex are given in an authoritative, straightforward way. The effects of sexual addiction on health and the commercial explosion of sex on the Internet are also examined. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars This is boring
What looked like a new book explaining sex in our time turned out to be a disappointing collection of "facts" and fables covering the last couple of millenia. No attempt has been made to correlate the facts or try to sort out those which have proven less than useful or even outright fictitious. As a result you could use this book to prove almost any point you want.It seems the author wanted the book to be all things for all people and she has ended up with a book that is nothing to nobody.Obvioiusly, I didn't enjoy the book and finally quit reading about half way through when I realized there was nothing new here. ... Product Description
Written and illustrated by a young girl who was sexually molested by a family member, this book reaches out to other children in a way that no adult can. Jessie's words carry the message, "It's o.k. to tell; help can come when you tell."

This book is an excellent tool for therapists, counselors, child protection workers, teachers, and parents dealing with children affected by sexual abuse.

Jessie's story adds a sense of hope for what should be, and the knowledge that the child protection system can work for children. Simple, direct, and from the heart, Jessie gives children the permission and the courage to deal with sexual abuse.

"Please Tell! is a beautifully simple book with a profoundly important message for children who have been sexually abused: the abuse wasn't their fault. Written and illustrated by Jessie, herself a pre-teen survivor of sexual abuse, it tells kids just what to do to get the help they need."
Kristin A. Kunzman, abuse therapist and author of The Healing Way: Adult Recovery from Childhood Sexual Abuse

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book for Child Abuse Families to Read
Good book to read with your children when they have been abused. It helped our son be able to share with his feelings with me.I highly recommend reading this book to your children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Please Tell
I am a counselor and recently adopted a little girl who suffered unspeakable abuse. This book assisted her in being able to talk with her therapist about her abuse so that her healing could begin. The fact that the book is written by a child allows children to relate on their level.I recommend this book for therapists working with children of abuse and families.

4-0 out of 5 stars I have no basis for comparison
My baby girl listened, but seemed distant.I pray that the signs I've seen and guessed them to be signs of abuse are wrong.I bought the books to read to my little girl so she will know that she can tell her Dad if Mommy's family is hurting her.I pray not, but will not take any chances, as my Ex's family abused her until she was taken and put into a foster home, and then a girls Home at age 13.She's mentally twisted.I was wrong to think I could help her.It all fell apart when we moved to Kansas to be close to her (what she claimed were the GOOD part of her family), They are NOT.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
As a child therapist, this book is very useful when working with most child victims of sexual abuse. It is a way to help them open up about their own feelings by relating their story to Jessie's story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best help to help
Please Tell is one of the most amazing help I ever had with my clients. My youth get a comfort when they read this story. They don't feel alone any more, because another girl like them had the same bad experience. Then, they feel confident to talk about their own abuse.
It's the best help for helpers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks Mr. Leahy
Michael Leahy starts his book off with his own personal addictive issues to sex and pornography that he had, beginning with the root of when he first encountered pornography and masturbation up through his internet pornography obsession and eventual affair. He mentions that he had a constant need to feed his addiction; keeping it a secret from everyone and fooling everyone. It was really well told and interesting to learn of his perspective of the person he used to be.

There is a chapter of the book where he included journal entries from his wife during the time that he became slightly more open with his problems. It was really amazing to read what their children experienced and how she felt throughout that time. It was definitely difficult on her, and sadly ended in a divorce.

He ends the first half of this book about how he was able to escape his 30 year addiction through Jesus' help, after deciding he would end his life - but instead decided to start a new life right as he was preparing to end it. He explains the law of increase/decrease "What you feed grows, and what you starve dies"; the more that he would be around a sense of community of godly people, to pursue his relationship with Jesus, and work on fixing the broken relationships he had - the less he would be interested in his pornography. He has been free from his bondage, but it took a lot of work in starving what he constantly fed for thirty years, while neglecting the important things in life like his relationship with Christ and relationship with his family and friends.

-"...as a sex addict feeds his lustful desires what they long for-sexual images, thoughts, fantasies, and experiences-his sexual compulsivity grows.Feed your sexual impulses with sexual experiences, and your sexual impulsiveness and acting-out behaviors increase."
-"...as you're feeding lust and watching it grow, you're also starving love and watching it die.Feed fantasy relationships, and your fantasy world grows. But in the process, you are starving real relationships, and they will begin to die.Feed yourself a steady diet of pornography, and you'll increasingly view women as degraded sex objects-you'll sexualize and objectify all women. And in the process of doing that, you'll have fewer and fewer thoughts and images representing a healthy view of women as caring, loving, feeling individuals worthy of your admiration and respect. As you starve your mind of those healthy images of women, the idea or concept of women being anything but sex objects continues to die and fade away."
-"...For instance, instead of'feeding' myself sexual images from cable TV or the internet, I'd 'starve' myself of them. And if I found that I was 'starving' myself of healthy relationships by isolating, I would look for opportunities to 'feed' myself by getting more socially involved."

The second half of the book is where he talks about the general statistics and what the mass majority of porn and sexual addicts go through, including the "sex generation" of kids today. I'd like to share a bit of what stood out most in this second half to me (he does have everything cited as well throughout this section).

-"The amount of sexual content on basic cable and network television found that the number of sex scenes nearly doubled between 1998 and 2005."
-"One recent study on teens found that watching sex on television increases the chances a teen will have sex, and may cause teens to start having sex at younger ages."
-"The average American consumer is exposed to over 14,000 sexual images and messages every year, most of which objectify women and base their value on their body shape and size."
-"The average age of first exposure to commercial pornography is somewhere between 11 and 14.But with one in four children in nursery school (ages 3, 4, and 5) going online, that average age is sure to drop."
-"With studies showing us that over 80% of teens age 15-17 have had multiple exposure to hard-core pornography, it's hard to imagine that pornography wouldn't play some role in influencing the sexual attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors of this generation."
-"Studies have shown that adolescents who watch television with high levels of sexual content are twice as likely to initiate sexual intercourse and also more likely to initiate other sexual activities. And teens with high levels of exposure to rap videos, which often promote drug use, violence, and sex, are significantly more likely to acquire an STD."
-"27% of teens between the ages of 13 and 16 are now sexually avtive. In fact, over half of teens ages 15-19 say they've had oral sex, and nearly half (42% of guys and 33% of girls ages 15-17) have had intercourse."
-Girls see 400 advertisements per day telling them how they should look.
-"The Kaiser Family Foundation found that 60% of teens cited that 'many of their friends had already done it' as a factor influencing their decision to have sex, and a similar number believed that their peers think having sex by age 15 is socially acceptable."
-"59% of girls age 12-19 agree that society tells them that attracting boys and acting sexy is one of the most important things girls can do."

This quote especially stood out to me.
"So we trade our history of sexual conservatism and naivety for a new kind of sexual freedom and worldly awareness that commercializes sexuality and turns it into a form of self-abuse.And we look around to see if innocence still exists, all we find are 'barely legal' porn sites and girls 'going wild' for their first time"

The rest of the book discusses how to recognize if you have a sexual addiction, how to approach or admit it, what to do if you do have one, and what you can do to help it. It also gives a lot of information of how the brain works and how the addictions can grow or be fixed in a healthy way.

"As pornography repeatedly triggers intense sexual arousal, our brain produces more and more dopamine, keeping us trapped in an intense cycle that mimics the early stages of infatuation, romance, and lovesickness.Overstimulate the brain with dopamine long and often enough, and the brain will adapt by increasing its tolerance levels. The result of increased tolerance is desensitization, similar to what an alcoholic or drug addict experiences after repeated use and abuse of their drug of choice."

"As long as the relationship between pornographic sexual stimulation and experiencing sexual satisfaction continues, the use of artificial sexual stimulants like pornography and out-of-bounds sexual behaviors (prostitutes, strip clubs, massage parlors, etc) will only serve to increase their sexual compulsivity."

Overall I truly enjoyed reading and learning from Michael Leahy's experience and research on the subject. He goes to various college campuses to discuss and debate with former porn-star Ron Jeremy quite often (which he also talks about in a whole chapter at the end of the book, which was quite interesting to read). It is amazing to see how God can transform and help anyone out of such a long-stemmed addiction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful
This was the first Kindle book that I purchased. I read it through on my iPhone, which isn't the easiest of formats to read.
I couldn't put 'Porn Nation' down. It resonated with me on so many levels. I appreciate the frank discussion of the author's
experience. A very emotional book. There isn't any pop psychology in it. Several constructive ideas for
practical actions to make progress in recovery.

4-0 out of 5 stars If You Struggle with Porn, This is a Great Book to Read
More than half the book is the author's story - His early years with a father who was physically abusive, and his beginnings with porn, how it grew in his life, and how it became a large part of his work life (working in the computer industry made porn easy to acquire). After years of addiction, Michael describes that he then made the jump from porn to "porn with skin on" (as he calls it): an affair; which cost him his first marriage.

The second half of the book deals with Leahy's views on our culture, stats about how sexualized culture has become, and some of his thoughts on healing and how it happened for him, and how it can begin to take shape for the reader. For him, the process of healing was broken into 2 parts: Recovery/Healing and learning the principle of "What you feed grows, what you starve dies."

With the staggering statistics presented in the book, he makes a valid case that we are on the way, if not already, a "Porn Nation".

If you are concerned about the sexual nature of the book, not to worry, he is very sensitive to his audience, and speaks in a real way without being tographic.

This book is an intense look at what happens in a man's life when he stumbles into porn, and the repercussions it can have.It also shows what happens when you humble yourself and use the pain and mistakes, broken hearts and bad decisions to help others who are in the same situation, but want a way out and are looking for a guide.

4-0 out of 5 stars Telling it like it is
This is a great book for anyone who has had a partner addicted to Porn. It opened my eyes and gave me answers that I so needed. I wish there was more information on the Porn side but I felt it helped in any case.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Psychosexual Guilt Complex Turned Into Censorship
The first part one should take from this book is the statement of the guilt he feels. This should not go unnoticed. It is an unhealthy view of human sexuality that one feels guilty watching people do a beautiful act to one another. He found himself angry at his wife, blaming her for his acts. This again comes not from the porn, but from his unwillingness to connect with another human being, maybe a fear of inadequacy--i.e. he was fat, not very handsome, and might not have been well endowed (I don't know about the last one). Though he tries to connect this with behavior of an addict, which blaming others is part of, being short with ones wife however for behavior that caused someone to act is more of a condition of guilt, like one would feel when having an affair--in fact he refers to porn as an affair.

I'm personally indifferent about porn, I use it occasionally when I feel lonely, my girlfriend's not around--I've used it occasionally when my girlfriend was around and wanted to do something kinky.I come to this book with a feeling of understanding for this man.I used to be a devout Christain, working in charities handing out bibles, debating Reverends on whether or not there would be a pre or post tribulation rapture (I believe a pre), and reading the bible a total of five times in a year, remembering thousands of verses.I remember thinking my porn watching, which was a lot when I was younger, was an addiction, and I felt shame for it, and told no one.I felt embarassment as well.I'd hear my friends talking about it, hear them go through the weird and awkward stuff they'd seen, and I'd shy away, embarassed to have looked at such stuff.I didn't look at women as objects, but I didn't know how to approach a woman, I felt inadequate.I was obese, I wasn't really smart, and I was shy.

Then I read a book, I know, I know, you've probably heard this story a dozen times. It wasn't the bible--I had read the bible and only found shame, embarassment, and fear in it.I read The Tropic of Cancer, and it was as if all my guilt was shown to be what it was, utter idiocy, a fraudlent fear from a conditioned response to what I percieved to be evil. When in fact, what I experienced, young men and older men had experienced for thousands of years. I felt liberated.I started exercising, I got in shape, I still watched porn, but I also started talking to girls, and taking them out on dates.

When a man says God is the answer to the removal of porn addiction, God is not the answer, no, God is not the answer at all.God is great, don't get me wrong. But liberation of oneself does not come from God, it comes from the realization that we are human beings, in all our glory and all our flaws, and that viewing sex for pleasure is not wrong, no more than reading about it and derviving pleasure is wrong, or having it before marriage with several young women is wrong. We are human beings, with a highly sexual nature due mostly to our superior intellect--our understanding of pleasure, allows us to search and dervive it from many activities.

This book is about a single person who believes his behavior is the norm, when in fact, his behavior is that of a man who had yet to come to terms with his humanity. He shunned humanity and wondered why he felt so inhumane. The bible is filled with pornographic references. Many religious leaders overlook this, but often, those who read it clearly know it.Even in the most holy of scriptures, there in lies the nature of sexuality defined plainly. And if you want to talk about objectifying women, there is no bigger text that objectifies women than the old testament, a man can leave his wives to another man.Solomon left his wives to David. They were taken--by God's order--to be married if you were to invade a country and kill the males (including babies) and the women who had laid with a man.If a woman is raped and unmarried, she must marry her rapist--actually, he must marry her, she's not considered.

And finally, censorship is never the answer.America must remain a free country and that includes unpopular speech.Self-control, self-acceptance, and the understanding of ones self-denial is the only answer for a succesful life--had he learned that, maybe he would've had a happier life, and a happier marriage. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I consider this an essential work
In all of my 12 years in ministry and my own journey for Wholeness in Christ, very few people have been able to simplify and illuminate the process of healing from what I hate to call "common" or "typical" sexual brokenness in our culture as Signa and Conlee. It is a dangerous time now for believers because we can grow so quickly numb to the bombardment of sexual distortions in our society. Even the other day I noticed Disney cartoons making sexual references that I wonder many believing parents would overlook or even laugh at. This book helped me and others to further our understanding for just how subtle evil is, yet how much God desires to heal and what that healing looks like. Please consider this book. If you are struggling with, have dealt with or are being tempted in any areas of pornography or living with someone who is, this book could seriously change your life. God bless. Comments welcome... 4-0 out of 5 stars Preventative and Encouraging
Porn Nation, by Michael Leahy, is a sex addict's account of his journey into an addictive cycle and his eventual recovery.Leahy details how he became addicted to pornography as a teenager, how his addiction escalated through internet porn, voyeurism, and adultery, and how he lost everything he valued as a result - his 15-year marriage, his two sons, his job, his reputation, his home, etc.Although not written from any professional viewpoint, Leahy uses his personal story to describe in compelling terms the cognitive and behavioral changes as he went further and further into sexual addiction. He concludes by explaining how he hit rock bottom with a brush with suicide, how he sought help, and how he began the recovery process.Significantly, his recovery process is closely linked to his spiritual journey of discovering the truth about himself, confession/repentance, and finding forgiveness and freedom in Jesus Christ.

This book is not a "how to" book, although there are the initial stages of what a recovery would look like.(The application is outsourced to 12 step groups, Dr. Patrick Carnes' material, etc.)This is a personal, descriptive account of one man's journey through sexual addiction. As such, it is a powerful motivator, as it depicts the great extent of what anyone can lose as the result of "harmless" pornography. For a bit of practical application, he provides a brief description of the indicators of sexual addiction (described in more detail in Out of the Shadows, by Dr. Patrick Carnes), as well as a short self-test to evaluate one's risk for future addiction.

There are a few quotes and concepts that are worth recalling.Leahy's first recovery principle is that the process is holistic; it involves the whole person. It goes beyond a physiological recovery; it needs a spiritual recovery as well. His second recovery principle is that "what you feed grows, what you starve dies" (92).Beyond these principles, Leahy confronts his reader in a direct yet sincere manner. He asks, "Do you want to get well?"(155) implying that if one is not determined or committed to the change process, it will not happen.Unfortunately, for most addicts, this does not happen until they have hit rock bottom. He challenges the reader to consider the cost of continuing in an addictive cycle."What will it take for you to finally admit you need help, that you're sick and you want to get well?Losing your marriage and family?Losing your second, or third, or fourth wife?Your career?Your home? ...AIDS?"(159)Leahy also charges, "This journey can only begin when you humble yourself enough to ask others for help."(163)In his view, the foundational key to breaking the addictive cycle is retraining your mind to think differently to counter the faulty belief system of any addiction. The other key is finding forgiveness through repentance to God and acceptance in the grace of Jesus Christ.

While my own story is quite different than Leahy's, I was able to relate to several of the cognitive components in his story.Leahy's story is a powerful warning for me.I recognize some of the foundational patterns to faulty belief systems that have already been laid in place for future addiction, and this book serves as a strong deterrent to re-entering the world of pornography.

I would use this book in ministry with two different intentions.First, this book can be used to warn men and women (including teens) about the dangers of pornography. It paints a very vivid picture of the negative consequences of pornographic use.It is a straightforward read and is narrative in most of its format, so it is easy to be drawn in to Leahy's story and experience it with him. Thus, when Leahy hits rock bottom, it easy to picture yourself there.Second, this book can be used to encourage people in the addictive process already.Whether someone has gone as far as Leahy has in his sexual exploits or not, his recovery, restoration, and redemption provides hope for someone trapped in the addictive cycle. It points to the way out and paints a picture of what it looked like in Leahy's case.I recommend reading Porn Nation as either a preventative measure or an encouragement to the addicted.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the most important books to read today!
PORN NATION by Michael Leahy is one of the most important books to read today! Unless you've been living under a rock, you're aware of the escalating problem of pornography addiction in our world today; and with increasing availability the problem will only get worse. Experts are calling pornography the crack cocaine of sexual addiction! Porn and sex-related sites make up nearly 60 percent of daily web traffic. More than 20 million Americans spend many waking hours looking at porn; it may be going on in your own home after the family goes to bed at night. Upwards of 30% of Christian women admit to the use of pornography and a shocking 50% of pastors say they struggle with porn!

This book is not just for people with sexual addiction but should be read by everyone! Women should read PORN NATION because they themselves may be teetering on the brink of sexual addiction or they may be married to a man like Michael Leahy who hid his addiction from his wife their entire marriage. Men should read PORN NATION because based on statistics today, there's a good chance they're in denial of their own addiction or be surprised to find they're married to a closet sex addict themselves. Every parent should read this book to be aware of the potential dangers their children face each day. Teens and college students alike should read PORN NATION it's likely they're being exposed to pornography on a regular basis and don't see the trap that's being set for them.

Michael Leahy does an excellent job telling the poignant story of his 30 year battle with pornography and the loss of his marriage and children because of his addiction. For those concerned about the sensitivity of the subject matter, you shouldn't be worried. The author is a Christian man and gets his points across without graphic details.

In PORN NATION Mr. Leahy covers all sides of the porn story. He speaks from the addict's perspective; how easy it is to get addicted to pornography and the difficulty getting free and staying free from it. Most importantly Leahy covers the big picture; the major problem we have in our nation today with the hyper-sexualized media, and the increasing availability of pornography especially to young children. And last but not least, he writes to the reader who may be an addict hiding in shame and denial. Leahy gives much needed words of encouragement to the addict who feels all alone and offers excellent resources to aid anyone seeking freedom from pornography's grasp.

As a recovering sex addict I highly recommend this book. In fact, I'll go a step further and tell you if you don't read PORN NATION there's a good chance you'll be ignorant to one of the worst epidemics this country has ever seen. With the sex addiction statistics as they are, even in the church, it's highly possible someone you know, maybe even you or a member of your own family struggle with this issue. There's so much shame linked to this particular addiction, especially for Christian women, that it's nearly impossible for them to reach out for help. If you read this book maybe you'll be able to spot specific behaviors and help them before pornography destroys their lives.

No matter where you are in your journey of recovery from the effects of sexual addiction, "My Husband Has a Secret" is a MUST READ!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
As this is a reletivly new 'addiction' in America, when I found my fiance up to some of this behavior, I didn't know where to go to learn about it but my first thought was "educate yourself about it...now!" and I did. This was the first book I read and it made me feel A LOT better within the first 3 chapters. I recommend this book to anyone going thru this as it a very useful tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars When your are lost for words of wisdom of your own
My Husband Has A Secret: Finding Healing For The Betrayal Of Sexual Addiction This book is the perfect help when you are at a loss for words of your own. When a friend has confessed to you that this is her struggle - living with a husband who struggles with sexual addiction and the fact that she has helped him keep her secret. I had no wisdom to share as I could not fully understand - but Molly Ann does. Her words are perfect and I continue to find that keeping an extra book is impossible - as soon as I purchase another I hear of a friend who really needs the encouragement & support that this book brings. BUY TWO - you will find that you will have a hard time keeping a copy for yourself on your shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jill Suzanne Shook, Author/Editor, of Making Housing Happen
I didn't want to put this book down. It was engaging and surprisingly relevant to anyone. Yet, by listening to Townsend and Cloud on their New Life radio program, and hearing of the popularity of their "Every Man's Battle" workshop, I would have to sadly conclude that sexual addiction is more common than most of us think. One friend didn't know it was possible to be addicted to sex. And one pastor said the same. The awareness of this addiction and how it is destroying families must be raised as well as the hope of healing. This book does both.
I found My Husband Has a Secret quite practical at the skill development level, for example, the how to's of active listening and why that form of communication is so essential. I have shared this book with a number of friends and some of my students. They have described it with words like "compelling" "empowering" "sad but hopeful." Others have wondered if this couple is still together after what they have gone through. I had the joy of speaking with Molly Ann, the author, and she and Timothy today enjoy a very strong marriage and their children all have a strong faith in Christ. God has obviously brought much healing to this family. This book is a witness of the power and love of God when God's principles for life are followed.

Product Description
A personal diary of my sex addiction stories - some erotic and some that will chill your soul.

Sex stories about experiences with Americans, Filipinas, Indonesians, Thais, Laotians, Canadians, Krygyzstanis, Burmese, Japanese, Koreans, Vietnamese, Chinese, Hawaiians, Brazilians, prostitutes, and transvestites.

Sex addiction is no joke, there are countless stupid things we addicted do to get a 'fix'. This is a story of my life up through 45 yrs old with all the meaty details of experiences that made for a life-long obsession with sexual activity of all sorts.

It's safe to say that only a very small portion of you reading this book have ever experienced, or probably heard of, the things I've done.

This book is full of my sexual confessions - most of which I'm not proud of. I wrote this sex addiction book to help others come to grips with what they've done and what they've thought of doing. It's not hard to believe, when you're locked in the grips of an addiction like this - that anything is possible. You could go mad. You could commit a grievous crime.

I had never thought seriously about kicking sex addiction. It worked for me. Hell, my entire life was filled with it - I was swimming in it. The water was warm and comfortable for a long time. Then it got worse... and worse...

You know what happened then? ... Read more

Product Description
In this book, Andreas G. Philaretou uses autobiographical reflection to investigate the negative impact of traditional masculine gender socialization on men's lives. Through an analysis that uses a feminist postmodern ideology of gender deconstruction and reconstruction, Philaretou sheds new light on the understudied area of male hurt, which is often experienced within the context of interpersonal relationships in dating, marital, and familial settings, and tends to be manifested in the form of male sexual anxiety, sexual addiction, and relational abuse. ... Guide and dictionary both describe this educational and revealing biographical and resource book.Dr. Lee began as a well-schooled popular cardiologist, with typical family and community ties. His descent to paralyzing impairment with sexual addiction is the basis for this work.Physicians damaged finally bring themselves or are brought to help. This may take the form of medical society or licensure sponsored impaired physicians programs, or other professional programs. This book starts with a brief chronology of what happened in Dr. Lee's life. The rest of the book segments into alphabetical chapters to facilitate looking up the many terms used in addiction problems. Each discussion then details the meaning and use of the term with editorial comments appended.A good bibliography and appendix are affixed to the end and complement the rest of the text.Certainly reading this book helps us understand another psychological land mine.We can perhaps help others and ourselves with these proper tools.

Product Description
It began at the age of 9 when a friend invited him over to look at his father's girlie magazines. Though raised in a Christian home, ten years later he was viewing X-rated videos which fed an insatiable lust that began looking for an opportunity to act out. Jake Porter found that opportunity in Mediterranean ports while serving as an aviation ordnanceman aboard the USS America. At a time when the Gulf War was unfolding, Jake should have been totally committed to God and country. However, the seedy world of pornography and prostitution sabotaged his Christian life and made his commitment to the Navy a low priority. Even later, as a regular church-going civilian, he was haunted by his sins.Porter doesn't pull any punches in this true story. He finally learned that complete honesty is a key factor in breaking free of the bondages of sexual sin. From its riveting opening scene to its explosive surprise ending, this hard-hitting story takes the reader from the Persian Gulf War zone and the gritty underworld of prostitution to the glory of God's saving grace. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars From storm tossed to a life redeemed
Reviewed by Erich Birch for Reader Views (5/06)

In his very personal memoir, Jake Porter lays out his life story as a testimony of how destructive and costly sex addition can be.Exposed to pornographic images in magazines at an early age, the author describes the desires that took hold of him and drove him for most of his early adult life.Although raised in a Christian home, upon joining the Navy after graduation from high school he was released from any restraints preventing him from pursuing his lust. After years of destructive behavior, he realizes that the God of his youth was still there waiting for him, and was also the only way that he would overcome his addition.

Porter's story explains that his plight is perhaps more common than many realize. The number of Christian men's help books and similar resources are evidence that this is a battle that most men have to deal with at least to some extent.Porter lives out a story that men who fight these battles will relate to, some more than others. His story will be an example to men who wrestle with this issue, and will be educational in that his life is about what happens if the battle is not fought.Instead of fighting, Porter chose to surrender to the desire and his story tells the price that he paid.

This is a book primarily for men.Women readers are sure to get insight into the intensity of the sex addiction issue, however, most men will have no trouble understanding the author's trials.Porter discovers the answer to his addiction is the same God that has the answer for all of life's other trials. When he finally turns to his Lord for deliverance, he finds that he is set free indeed. He then finds that God even has a purpose for the life that Porter had tried his best to destroy. This book is recommended for the person who struggles with sexual addition and who would benefit from reading the story of someone that has lived this life and desperately sought for a way out.

Society's mixed messages about sex have costs that are often untold.Like alcoholism, some men are exposed to pornographic images at an early age and unknowingly begin their addiction to a life of lust.In his memoir "Storm Tossed," Jake Porter tells how he wandered down this path, how he pursued it through the world of pornography and prostitution, and how he overcame it all only by returning to the God he had abandoned along the way.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspirational and engaging read from beginning to end
Storm Tossed: How A U.S. Serviceman Won The Battle Of Sex Addiction by Jake Porter is the intimate depiction of a vulgar addiction of one man during an impassioned time of service to the American Navy. Readers will become involved in the story of Portor's struggle with his compulsive habitual sexual endeavors and potentially damaging lack of loyalty to his nation's military as he rediscovers the path of God he once knew to rejuvenate and fall no less than reincarnate his wounded soul. Storm Tossed is very highly recommended to students of human sexuality, as well as those who are struggling with their own addictions (particular sexual additions), as an inspirational and engaging read from beginning to end.

4-0 out of 5 stars Devastation & Redemption
Storm Tossed tells the story of how one man fell into a lifestyle of sexual sin and ultimately found redemption through the work of Christ. Taking on the pseudonym Jake Porter, the author tells how his problems began with pornographic magazines in his youth and rejection by girls in high school and college. He led himself to believe that because God wasn't providing him with a wife, he was forced to fulfill his sexual desires in other ways.

So Jake Porter joined the Navy and "saw the world." Along the way he became addicted to prostitutes, even admitting at times that he didn't even want the women, but he was compelled to be with them anyway. At first he would ask God for forgiveness after an encounter, but eventually he gave up. He reached many points of empty depression, and though he desired to commit suicide, he could never bring himself to do it. The final chapters tell of how honesty and faith brought him to the point of claiming victory over his addiction. The Epilogue provides some practical tips for wives whose husbands who are heavily addicted, as well as for men.

My main criticism about Storm Tossed is all of the secondary characters seem flat. This is probably due to the story being filtered through the theme of sexual addiction. The result is that very little is known about the personalities of the other characters, even the author's wife. For the most part, all the reader learns is how someone either corrupts or aids Jake, or simply helps to move the story along.

Apart from the criticism, Storm Tossed is an intriguing read. Jake Porter's story shows the devastation sexual sin can cause in a man's life as well as the redemption that can be found in submitting one's life to Christ. ... Read more
