Book Description

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the focus in sex therapy was on behavior change. Sex therapists then usually acted as guides, describing techniques and assigning sensate-focused homework. In the 1990s, the availability of a wealth of new information and procedures, combined with our current understanding of the significance of such factors as family-of-origin issues and patient emotions and cognitions, has brought the practice of sex therapy to a new level of sophistication. Designed as a succinct guide to contemporary sex therapy, this book provides a state-of-the-art, empirically based overview of the most common sexual dysfunctions, and a step-by-step manual
for their assessment and treatment.

Although Jennifer Berman, M.D., and Laura Berman, Ph.D., readily agree that "the most important sex organ in the human body is the brain," the last thing they want anyone to believe is that all female sexual problems are mental--quite the contrary. Findings gathered from their own research and clinical practice show that, like men, women often undergo physical changes and challenges that lead to sexual dysfunction; in fact, nearly half of all women in the U.S. experience sexual problems at some point during their lifetime. Through their frank but personable discussion about the female sexual response, sisters Jennifer (a urologist) and Laura (a sex therapist) virtually open their clinic doors to readers; they share client stories, fully describe their clinical patient-assessment process, provide an updated anatomy lesson, and offer practical suggestions for enhancing sexual pleasure.

As founders and co-directors of the Women's Sexual Health Clinic at Boston University Medical Center, the Bermans have treated a variety of ailments, including loss of libido (due to medical factors, emotional issues, or menopause) and arousal and pain disorders. They address it here in plain, understandable words designed to empower women with better information about their bodies and the many factors that can affect sexual well-being. In a way, the book reads almost like a diary of their practice, bolstered by the occasional critical essay (such as chapter 2, "The History of Female Sexuality," or chapter 6, "Sexuality Through the Life Cycle"). For Women Only is a sensitive, sensible, and timely take on a previously "pooh-poohed" subject--with encouraging conclusions that are long overdue. --Liane Thomas Book Description
A groundbreaking book by the co-directors of one of the country's first women's sexual health clinics-destined to be an essential resource for women throughout the country.According to The Journal of the American Medical Association, 43 percent of American women suffer from some kind of sexual dysfunction. And though the introduction of Viagra has increased attention to male sexual concerns, the problems women face are often ignored. For Women Only is the first book to offer a comprehensive exploration of female sexual dysfunction. The co-directors of the Women's Sexual Health Clinic at Boston University Medical Center -- Jennifer Berman, a urologist, and her sister, Laura Berman, a sex therapist-draw on research and clinical findings to show that many of the physical problems that cause impotence in men can cause sexual dysfunction in women. In addition, many women experience diminished sexual response as they age, go through menopause, and after hysterectomies or other pelvic surgery.Covering both physiological and psychological issues in a straightforward, sympathetic style, the Bermans provide authoritative, easy-to-understand information on the medical breakthroughs and treatments that can help women of all ages enjoy more fulfilling sex lives. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars one big advertisement
I was VERY disappointed in this book.I felt it had very little information about female sexual dysfunction, and TONS of information about the Berman sisters' clinic. It seemed like every other sentance started with "At our clinic..."Also, to make matters worse, these so-called experts on women's sexual health spelled vulvodynia wrong throughout the entire book!!!I recommend "for each other" by Lonnie Barbach, or a book on your specific condition, like "The Vulvodynia Survival Guide".

Book Description
Dr. Alfred Newman, a Montgomery, Alabama urologist and a leading expert on the treatment of sexual problems, has published Beyond Viagra: Plain Talk About Treating Male and Female Sexual Dysfunction.Sexual dysfunction affects an estimated twenty million men and a similarly large number of women in the United States today.Rapid advances have been made in methods of treatment over the past three decades, and in 1998 the "wonder drug" Viagra appeared.

Newman said he wrote his book to answer questions not only about Viagra but also about the many causes of sexual dysfunction and the range of treatments that are now available, including implants, injections, herbal medicine, and more. The book is written in language that can be easily understood by laypersons but has enough depth to make it a useful reference to general practitioners, psychologists, psychiatrists, and others involved in the treatment of sexual problems. ... The decade before menopause, says Dr. Stephen R. Goldstein, is a time of profound change--both physically and emotionally--yet many women don't realize this. They may try to ignore subtle-to-bothersome symptoms such as erratic menstruation, "free-floating anxiety, inability to concentrate," forgetfulness, weight gain, sexual difficulties, and insomnia, when they could be effectively treating these problems. Unfortunately, not all doctors recognize perimenopause or know how to treat its symptoms, which may lead them to discount patients' complaints, or worse, suggest unnecessary treatments--including hysterectomies. That's where Could It Be ... Perimenopause? can help.

In clear, supportive prose, Goldstein offers no-baloney advice. "Today's perimenopausal women has neither the time nor the patience to go through four to fifteen years of symptoms without relief," he says. He fully delineates the roles of various hormones, how to determine if you're in perimenopause or not, as well as how to treat the various symptoms to gain control over your life. He's a big advocate of low- and ultra-low-dose birth-control pills: "There is nothing inherently advantageous about bursting the capsule of your ovary and having to repair it each month. There's no reason for having fluctuating levels of hormones floating around unless you want to have a baby." He also recommends some natural and herbal treatments (he tells which ones are more appropriate for menopausal or postmenopausal women, and which are worthless or even dangerous). He's also a big promoter of sonohysterography, a type of ultrasound test that he says could prevent up to three-fourths of all emergency-room visits made by women with excessive uterine bleeding.

With added resources, including URLs for recommended newsgroups, Web sites, and medical databases, along with information about the very latest in treatments (such as crinone, a natural progesterone gel), Goldstein's created an enormously beneficial reference for both women and health-care providers who could stand to brush up on this topic.Book Description

1-0 out of 5 stars Say "no" to perimenopause
Perimenopause is a marketing construct, intended to sell drugs, books and other products by instilling self-doubt and insecurity. Resist the effort to pathologize everything about women's bodies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough Job
I really liked this book's approach to the subject matter.I found a lot of information in here that was helpful and timely. This book is a keeper for my home library.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Drastic, Too Closed Minded
Well, as one of the previous reviewers said, there were just too many things about this book that were not to like. When you're on a mission of trying to discover "what's happening," you need facts uncluttered by opinion, etc.Would not recommend.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lone voice here
Everyone else raves but I really really didn't like this book. Here are my reasons:
-he rejects all herbal remedies because they have not been FDA approved.I admit there are problems with quality control and no you shouldn't ask the check out clerk for advice on natural remedies but there are other educated practitioners, even doctors, who can give advice on natural remedies.
-he is too quick to recommend a hysterectomy. While he says that you shouldn't have a D & C to try to identify excessive bleeding if you're going to have any surgery you might as well have a hysterectomy, forget myomectomy or any other less invasive surgery.I'm quite happy that I got rid of my fibroids with a myomectomy and still have my uterus - thank goodness my doctor didn't agree with this book.
-the book is 4 years old now and doesn't take into consideration the recent studies which show that HRT may not be the right way to go.I'd like to know how those studies affect his recommendation that all perimenopausal women take low dose birth control pills
-he seems to have only one answer for perimenopause and that's low dose birth control pills.I'm always suspicious of complicated problems that have only one answer.

I'm still looking for a book that I feel comfortable with.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book for Women Over 40
I spent three years in misery suffering numerous symtpoms that couldn't be isolated by my doctors. Many times, I was told that these symptoms were essentially psychosomatic, or related to my weight, or stress from work. Then my husband found this book in a bookstore while on a business trip...just flipping through it, he immediately recognized the problems that I was experiencing. This book made such a difference for me. It helped me get through the final two years of my perimenopausal period and helped me learn how to manage the symptoms. If you think you might be approaching menopause now (or expect to be in the near future), I encourage you to get this book. It will make the next few years of your life much easier and give you peace of mind and body! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Basic and Too Politically Correct
I was expecting a book that would be more detailed. I was hoping to find new information on a highly overlooked subject. Instead what I found was a book written for a certain audience. I could not help but feel that this audience, is the very same audience, that enjoys the agendas that are shoved down our throats by marketing departments and television program directors.

This is a topic (shame research) that is becoming important within the psychological community for good reason. Shame, we are discovering, is playing a much larger part in our lives than we had currently estimated.

I was hoping this text would have some examples of the latest findings within the field of shame research, but I was disappointed.

I do not consider this author an authority. I consider this author a writer of popular culture....I found many of her comments to be shame-based. Particularly the comments that reflect current sexual counseling techniques, practiced by specialists, like our author.

I would also like to mention that this book contains little regarding treatment. I feel this is a good thing considering the lack of real knowledge on the subject written.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but subjective and anecdotal
Well written and readable with good case vignettes and courageous use ofthe writer's autobiography. It is apparently directed at other therapistsbut offers some embarassingly (now why did I pick that word?)elementaryinformation about such matters as anatomy, so that at times she seems to beaddressing a general readership. She is uncritical about some of hersources eg "Acupuncture directly works on the energy channels"and disdains statistical evidence. There is an index and references but noattempt to completely review the literature and other viewpoints aredismissed without full evaluation. On the whole I would recommend it toanyone working in the field but would want a neophyte to read a few otherrhings.

4-0 out of 5 stars Relevent for therapists dealing with any aspect of sexuality
This is a useful book in the evolving dialogue that reflects the level of wisdom emerging in the field of sexuality recovery.Hastings addresses theoverlapping fields of sex therapy, sex abuse recovery, and sex addictionrecovery, noting how therapists in one field may have only passingknowledge of the others.Hastings continues her championing of liberationfrom shame as the key to growth in all of these related areas. As shesuccinctly writes, "shame needs to be elicited so that it can bedischarged", and examples of this approach are abundant. She makesgood sense in describing the unhealthy culture in which our repressions andaddictions take root."Healing sexuality is far more than healingsexual problems", and the author gives numerous examples of distortedthinking and goals in sexual expression.Helpful analysis of flirting andjealousy highlight the maturity of Hastings' approach.Sometimes this bookseems directed for clients, other times for therapists. The specificchapters detailing clinical issues (countertransference, arousal in thetherapeutic setting, limit setting, therapist self-exploration and healing, for example) make this a particularly useful book for all counselors. There are quite a few case vignettes and examples of therapist questions touse with clients.A solid and admirable work that will benefit manytherapists and the clients they serve. ... Read more

Book Description
In recent years, the work of Kinsey, Masters and Johnson, and other investigators has led to tremendous advances in our understanding of human sexuality. This increased understanding is currently being translated into innovative new approaches to the treatment of sexually dysfunctional men and women, with often dramatic results in relieving the distressing sexual symptoms of countless individuals who were formerly beyond help, even with years of costly psychotherapy.

Now a noted psychiatrist and specialist in the new sex therapy describes for the first time the new treatment of the sexual dysfunctions, providing a clear picture of the entire process of treatment, as well as conceptualizing the theory underlying it. The author's method is unique in that it represents an integration of psychoanalytic and sex therapy techniques. It treats the couple on an outpatient basis and is applicable to office practice, as well; it focuses on relief of the sexual problem and attaining improved sexual functioning; and it is multicausal and eclectic in orientation-combining psychoanalytic and learning theories and techniques through the integration of assigned sexual tasks (which the couple conducts at home) with conjoint psychotherapeutic sessions in the doctor's office. Treatment is usually brief, requiring only six to fifteen visits for most couples.

This comprehensive volume covers the anatomy and physiology of the sexual response, including the role of hormones and the brain (with 13 anatomical and schematic illustrations); the biological and psychological causes of sexual dysfunction; and the basic principles and procedures of sex therapy.

Discarding the pejorative terms "impotence" and "frigidity," the author classifies the six major sexual dysfunctions as: in Men -- Erectile Dysfunction, Premature Ejaculation, and Retarded Ejaculation; in Women -- General Sexual Dysfunction, Orgastic Dysfunction, and Vaginismus. For each of these, the author describes the immediate and deeper causes, the specific sexual tasks assigned, the therapist/couple interaction in the therapeutic sessions, and the results of treatment. Thirty-nine detailed case studies supplement the text, and seven drawings by internationally-known artist Betty Dodson illustrate the sexual tasks most frequently prescribed.

Another major contribution of this volume is a group of tables showing the effects on male and female sexuality of a broad spectrum of drugs and physical illnesses. The interrelationship of sexual dysfunction and marital discord, contraindications for sex therapy, the handling of psychiatric disorders in patient or partner, and the qualifications of sex therapists are among the many ramifications of the new sex therapy which are analyzed by Dr. Kaplan.

Evidence now suggests," she says, "that sexual problems, while they may of course be manifestations of profound emotional disturbance or mental_illness, are not invariably so, but also commonly occur in persons who function well in other areas and have no other psychological symptoms....For many patients the new brief forms of intervention are far more effective than the traditional psychiatric approaches."

In sum, this is a comprehensive and highly professional volume which places treatment of the sexual dysfunctions on a solid, scientific basis. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book!
This was one of my textbooks in graduate school. This book is informative, well rounded and clinically sound. I was impressed by the shear scope of this book. It dealt with both male and female sexual arousal anddysfunction. It spoke to etiological concerns as well as types oftreatments and their effectiveness. It dealt with the cerebral localizationand neural pathways of the sexual response. This book is rightly used as atextbook. It is ambitious in scope, thoroughly researched and should beconsidered the watermark. (I know it sounds like an ad, but no kidding!) ... Read more

From the author: Objective: This study examined the contribution of alcoholism and marital conflict to male alcoholics' sexual problems. Method: Married couples with an alcoholic husband (n = 26) were compared with 26 maritally conflicted and 26 nonconflicted couples without alcohol-related problems on both sexual dysfunction and sexual satisfaction. Results: The male alcoholics and their wives experienced less sexual satisfaction across a range of variables and more sexual dysfunction--specifically husbands' diminished sexual interest, impotence and premature ejaculation, and wives' painful intercourse--than nonconflicted couples. However. impotence was the only aspect on which alcoholics reported more difficulties than did maritally conflicted couples. When husbands' age was considered, more frequent retarded ejaculation with older age was unique to the alcoholics since it did not occur in conflicted or nonconflicted husbands; and there was a greater decline in frequency of intercourse with older age among the alcoholic than among the conflicted couples. Conclusions: These findings are consistent with a biopsychosoeial formulation of alcoholics' sexual adjustment problems that implicates (1) marital conflict as a major contributing factor to most of these problems and (2) the combined role of both marital conflict and the physical effects of chronic alcohol abuse as most relevant to the elevated rates of impotence and retarded ejaculation (among older alcoholics) and the steeper decline in intercourse frequency with age. (J. Stud. Alcohol 58: 91-99, 1997)

From the supplier: Married couples with an alcoholic husband commonly have sexual dysfunctions and less sexual satisfaction, especially as the husband ages. Researchers conducted a sex survey with couples with an alcoholic husband, with non-alcoholic couples with marital conflict and with non-alcoholic, contented couples. Alcoholic couples have marital conflicts that appear as sexual problems. Alcoholic men have increasing problems with impotence, retarded ejaculation and less frequent intercourse as they age.

Book Description

Sexual disorders may arise from multiple causes. Their clinical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment must take into account the patient's underlying biology, history, and behaviors. Using an approach pioneered at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, Peter Fagan applies the four "perspectives of psychiatry" (disease, dimension, behavior, and life story) to the diagnosis and treatment of sexual disorders.

This book offers therapists an efficient and clinically proven way to organize the range of theoretical methodologies currently available, presenting a framework that is both conceptually cohesive and readily applicable in clinical settings. After an introduction, each chapter offers a case study followed by an analysis based on one perspective methodology as well as a discussion of the clinical implications of that perspective. The book closes with a chapter integrating the approaches. This book will be of interest to mental health care professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers, who treat patients with sexual disorders.
