Product Description
This comprehensive and compassionate book covers everything women need to know about the natural and treatable effects of perimenopause, the changes that occur in the decade before menopause. Steven R. Goldstein, M.D., one of Americas foremost authorities on perimenopause, clearly explains what women can expect when their estrogen levels begin to fluctuate and describes the natural remedies and state-of-the-art medical treatments that can give women the upper hand.Amazon.com Review
The decade before menopause, says Dr. Stephen R. Goldstein, isa time of profound change--both physically and emotionally--yet manywomen don't realize this. They may try to ignore subtle-to-bothersomesymptoms such as erratic menstruation, "free-floating anxiety, inability to concentrate," forgetfulness, weight gain, sexualdifficulties, and insomnia, when they could be effectively treatingthese problems. Unfortunately, not all doctors recognize perimenopauseor know how to treat its symptoms, which may lead them to discountpatients' complaints, or worse, suggest unnecessarytreatments--including hysterectomies. That's where Could It Be... Perimenopause? can help.

In clear, supportive prose,Goldstein offers no-baloney advice. "Today's perimenopausal women hasneither the time nor the patience to go through four to fifteen yearsof symptoms without relief," he says. He fully delineates the roles ofvarious hormones, how to determine if you're in perimenopause or not,as well as how to treat the various symptoms to gain control over yourlife. He's a big advocate of low- and ultra-low-dose birth-controlpills: "There is nothing inherently advantageous about bursting thecapsule of your ovary and having to repair it each month. There's noreason for having fluctuating levels of hormones floating aroundunless you want to have a baby." He also recommends some natural andherbal treatments (he tells which ones are more appropriate formenopausal or postmenopausal women, and which are worthless or evendangerous). He's also a big promoter of sonohysterography, a type ofultrasound test that he says could prevent up to three-fourths of allemergency-room visits made by women with excessive uterinebleeding.

With added resources, including URLs for recommendednewsgroups, Web sites, and medical databases, along with informationabout the very latest in treatments (such as crinone, a naturalprogesterone gel), Goldstein's created an enormously beneficialreference for both women and health-care providers who could stand tobrush up on this topic. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Why couldn't a doctor have explained this years ago?
This book explained it all.I found out I've been in perimenopause for probably 7 years now and didn't know it.I kept up my GYN appts. once a year, and when I would mention night sweats years ago, she's tell me it was too soon.
The forgetfulness really had me wondering.I had just lost my mother in April 2009 and she had suffered toward the end with dementia.I kept thinking I was just over stressed taking care of her and dad and my husband.Trying to be a grandmom, wife, mother and caregiver and working full time.I would take a walk and think to myself that the old line was teenagers think they know everything.I thought, maybe they do.I know I was a lot quicker with figures, etc. when I was in my teens and twentys. Now, thanks to this book, it all makes sense.I may not like the whole aging process, heck, taking care of everyone, I've really had it "jambed down my throat, the good, the bad, and the ugly of it".But, at least, I have a "reason" for it.Oh, and I'm 49 years old.I'll be 50 in June 2010.It isn't too early. Now, I'm going to find a new GYN that actually listens to me and takes me serious. My regular physician ran my bloodwork upon request after I got this book, and shazam, batman, my hormones are all over the place.
I wished I'd gotten this book 5 years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every woman should know . . .
This book had a lot of great information on what changes take place in woman's body in the years just before menopause referred to as perimenopause and what can be done to alleviate some of the more bothersome symptoms. It will put your mind at ease with what you may be going through and having a difficult time with. I would recommend this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Say "no" to perimenopause
Perimenopause is a marketing construct, intended to sell drugs, books and other products by instilling self-doubt and insecurity. Resist the effort to pathologize everything about women's bodies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough Job
I really liked this book's approach to the subject matter.I found a lot of information in here that was helpful and timely. This book is a keeper for my home library.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Drastic, Too Closed Minded
Well, as one of the previous reviewers said, there were just too many things about this book that were not to like. When you're on a mission of trying to discover "what's happening," you need facts uncluttered by opinion, etc.Would not recommend. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
In recent years, the work of Kinsey, Masters and Johnson, and other investigators has led to tremendous advances in our understanding of human sexuality. This increased understanding is currently being translated into innovative new approaches to the treatment of sexually dysfunctional men and women, with often dramatic results in relieving the distressing sexual symptoms of countless individuals who were formerly beyond help, even with years of costly psychotherapy.

Now a noted psychiatrist and specialist in the new sex therapy describes for the first time the new treatment of the sexual dysfunctions, providing a clear picture of the entire process of treatment, as well as conceptualizing the theory underlying it. The author's method is unique in that it represents an integration of psychoanalytic and sex therapy techniques. It treats the couple on an outpatient basis and is applicable to office practice, as well; it focuses on relief of the sexual problem and attaining improved sexual functioning; and it is multicausal and eclectic in orientation-combining psychoanalytic and learning theories and techniques through the integration of assigned sexual tasks (which the couple conducts at home) with conjoint psychotherapeutic sessions in the doctor's office. Treatment is usually brief, requiring only six to fifteen visits for most couples.

This comprehensive volume covers the anatomy and physiology of the sexual response, including the role of hormones and the brain (with 13 anatomical and schematic illustrations); the biological and psychological causes of sexual dysfunction; and the basic principles and procedures of sex therapy.

Discarding the pejorative terms "impotence" and "frigidity," the author classifies the six major sexual dysfunctions as: in Men -- Erectile Dysfunction, Premature Ejaculation, and Retarded Ejaculation; in Women -- General Sexual Dysfunction, Orgastic Dysfunction, and Vaginismus. For each of these, the author describes the immediate and deeper causes, the specific sexual tasks assigned, the therapist/couple interaction in the therapeutic sessions, and the results of treatment. Thirty-nine detailed case studies supplement the text, and seven drawings by internationally-known artist Betty Dodson illustrate the sexual tasks most frequently prescribed.

Another major contribution of this volume is a group of tables showing the effects on male and female sexuality of a broad spectrum of drugs and physical illnesses. The interrelationship of sexual dysfunction and marital discord, contraindications for sex therapy, the handling of psychiatric disorders in patient or partner, and the qualifications of sex therapists are among the many ramifications of the new sex therapy which are analyzed by Dr. Kaplan.

Evidence now suggests," she says, "that sexual problems, while they may of course be manifestations of profound emotional disturbance or mental_illness, are not invariably so, but also commonly occur in persons who function well in other areas and have no other psychological symptoms....For many patients the new brief forms of intervention are far more effective than the traditional psychiatric approaches."

In sum, this is a comprehensive and highly professional volume which places treatment of the sexual dysfunctions on a solid, scientific basis. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book!
This was one of my textbooks in graduate school. This book is informative, well rounded and clinically sound. I was impressed by the shear scope of this book. It dealt with both male and female sexual arousal anddysfunction. It spoke to etiological concerns as well as types oftreatments and their effectiveness. It dealt with the cerebral localizationand neural pathways of the sexual response. This book is rightly used as atextbook. It is ambitious in scope, thoroughly researched and should beconsidered the watermark. (I know it sounds like an ad, but no kidding!) ... Read more

Product Description
In therapy, as in the world at large, sexuality is different from other issues because of the culturally imposed secrecy and shame that inhibit open, non-defended talk about it. Anne Stirling Hastings, Ph.D., who specializes in treating the overlapping sexual problems of abuse, addiction, and dysfunction, encourages clinicians to recognize and overcome their own shame as a precondition to eliciting and advancing their clients' awareness. The need to heal from sexual shame, both cultural and idiosyncratic, underlies the healing of all other forms of sexual distress, dysfunction, abuse, and addiction. In people inhibited from experiencing natural interest in/arousal by a partner, shame makes imperatives of fantasy and pornography and leads to the linkage of sex with things non-sexual. Masturbation, homosexuality, the unconventional paraphilias, here dubbed "cross-wirings," and the dynamics of flirtations, jealousy, and extramarital affairs, all get a new look through Dr. Hastings' lens of shame as concomitant cause and effect of sexual behaviors. Case histories animate her salutary and unusually accessible corrective. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Basic and Too Politically Correct
I was expecting a book that would be more detailed. I was hoping to find new information on a highly overlooked subject. Instead what I found was a book written for a certain audience. I could not help but feel that this audience, is the very same audience, that enjoys the agendas that are shoved down our throats by marketing departments and television program directors.

This is a topic (shame research) that is becoming important within the psychological community for good reason. Shame, we are discovering, is playing a much larger part in our lives than we had currently estimated.

I was hoping this text would have some examples of the latest findings within the field of shame research, but I was disappointed.

I do not consider this author an authority. I consider this author a writer of popular culture....I found many of her comments to be shame-based. Particularly the comments that reflect current sexual counseling techniques, practiced by specialists, like our author.

I would also like to mention that this book contains little regarding treatment. I feel this is a good thing considering the lack of real knowledge on the subject written.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but subjective and anecdotal
Well written and readable with good case vignettes and courageous use ofthe writer's autobiography. It is apparently directed at other therapistsbut offers some embarassingly (now why did I pick that word?)elementaryinformation about such matters as anatomy, so that at times she seems to beaddressing a general readership. She is uncritical about some of hersources eg "Acupuncture directly works on the energy channels"and disdains statistical evidence. There is an index and references but noattempt to completely review the literature and other viewpoints aredismissed without full evaluation. On the whole I would recommend it toanyone working in the field but would want a neophyte to read a few otherrhings.

4-0 out of 5 stars Relevent for therapists dealing with any aspect of sexuality
This is a useful book in the evolving dialogue that reflects the level of wisdom emerging in the field of sexuality recovery.Hastings addresses theoverlapping fields of sex therapy, sex abuse recovery, and sex addictionrecovery, noting how therapists in one field may have only passingknowledge of the others.Hastings continues her championing of liberationfrom shame as the key to growth in all of these related areas. As shesuccinctly writes, "shame needs to be elicited so that it can bedischarged", and examples of this approach are abundant. She makesgood sense in describing the unhealthy culture in which our repressions andaddictions take root."Healing sexuality is far more than healingsexual problems", and the author gives numerous examples of distortedthinking and goals in sexual expression.Helpful analysis of flirting andjealousy highlight the maturity of Hastings' approach.Sometimes this bookseems directed for clients, other times for therapists. The specificchapters detailing clinical issues (countertransference, arousal in thetherapeutic setting, limit setting, therapist self-exploration and healing, for example) make this a particularly useful book for all counselors. There are quite a few case vignettes and examples of therapist questions touse with clients.A solid and admirable work that will benefit manytherapists and the clients they serve. ... Read more

Against a backdrop of virtual intercourse, online porn, and burgeoning Viagra sales, Sex, Lies, and Pharmaceuticals reveals how women’s sexual difficulties are being repackaged as symptoms of a new disorder. In this compelling book, award-winning journalist Ray Moynihan teams up with drug assessment specialist Barbara Mintzes to investigate the creation of female sexual dysfunction or FSD, and the marketing machine that promises to "cure" it. The authors go inside the corridors of medical power to visit drug company–sponsored scientific meetings and medical education events where doctors are being trained to see women’s sexual problems as the symptoms of FSD — a pharmaceutically treatable condition. Moynihan and Mintzes explore the underlying causes of sexual dissatisfaction among women and expose how global drug companies exploit those problems in an attempt to create the next billion dollar disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review:Medicines for Mental Health, author Kevin Thompson Ph.D.
Kevin Thompson wrote Medicines For Mental Health, The Ultimate Guide to Psychiatric Medication because the book needed to be written and read by those of us who are experiencing some form of mental illness. Those of us who experience depression and other forms of mental illness typically go to psychiatrists for help.Psychiatrists prescribe drugs to assist us in living our daily lives. The selection of the appropriate drug with the appropriate dose to fit each individual is as much an art as it is a science. Many times questions remain unanswered.

Drugs used to treat mental illness affect the patient's entire life.First, there are a number of drugs to choose from, each may or may not be effective for a particular individual at a specified dose, and each has potential side effects. Many of the drugs take time to become effective.Second, each patient must become an active participant in their own therapy by observing and reporting their individual response to the drug. Highly intelligent people, typical victims of depression and other forms of mental illnesses, often have creative jobs.Certain medications can destroy an individual's ability to think, perform as a professional, interfere with personal relationship, inhibit a person's sexual performance, or simply make it impossible to stay awake. This book provides information to the patient, and perhaps their loved ones, on how an individual can observe, understand and participate in his own treatment.

The author has organized the information in such a way that a patient can locate a disorder, identified the drugs typically prescribed to treat that disorder, gather information regarding doses and periods of effectiveness, and become aware of the possible side effects. The information in the book is not exhaustive from a medical viewpoint. However, it provides useful information for the patient, information either not discussed or covered too quickly by the psychiatrists.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Roadmap to the Mental Illness Medical Treatment Process
This is a very useful book for anyone with a family member or close friend being treated for depression, particularly if they went through a couple of different treatment options before finding one that worked - or if they are going through that process right now.

It was enlightening to find out that identical depression symptoms can result from different problems in brain chemistry and that there are different classes of anti-depressants distinguished by how they affect brain chemistry, e.g., Monoamine Oxidase inhibitors versus reuptake inhibitors.Once the right class of anti-depressants is identified for an individual, the next step becomes a search for the medicine with the side effects that the individual tolerates best.

This book provides a roadmap to a treatment process that can otherwise seem bewildering or random. With this book as a reference, it doesn't have to be either.Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Colourful Capsules of Mental Health Care
Kevin Thompson, Ph.D. has put together a
very user-friendly, well-organized and
infomative guide to current psychopharmacology.
Symptoms of mental illness, most appropriate
medications, side effects and their profiles,
are described in a succinct and comprehensive
style.I would describe the guide as elegant.

For my particular interest in lithium, I was
very pleased to read the Q-T cardiac prolongation
side effect warning, that lacks priority in may
other medical guides I have read.

I am very happy to have this guide in my collection.
It is great for the layman with a very considerate
Glossary of psychiatric terms in the final chapter.

The book was originally written under the name "Nom de Plume" by his user name "Nom de Plume."At best, this guy is a quack and the book should be avoided at all costs especially since its predecessor could be found FREE in the Usenet community.

Product Description
This book addresses the conflict and suffering experienced by the believing Christian who find themselves, or someone they love, being confronted with unwanted same sex attraction. The bible tells the believer they need not be brought under the dominion of any foreign thing. If a way of life, thought pattern or propensity is unwanted, it is an unwelcomed foreigner. All predispositions were addressed at the cross; every disease, sickness, infirmity, emotional or personality disorder must yield because Jesus conquered them, paying the price for the release of Gods people from those tormentors. True freedom can be realized only when the believer knows his or her authority and exercises it in faith. This book is not for the individual happy with his or her alternate lifestyle. Additionally it is not written to disparage any person or group of people, it is written to and for those who are conflicted in thoughts and feelings they have that are distinctly contrary to what is written in the bible, and want to know what they can do about it. ...
