I read this wonderful book today and find it simple, easy to read, color illustrations are there with the text.I have read this book during my Genitourinary Examination and found it very useful, this is the main reason that I bought this book.I recommend this book to all the doctors related to genitourinary medicine, dermatologists and venereologist. It is also useful for the G.P's and medical students so that they can get a basic idea about the sexually transmitted diseases and their presentations. At the end I would like to congratulate Dr.H.Hunter Handsfieldon writing such a wonderful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful information
I believe this was a great book, it provided a lot of needed information on stds, the contraction of certain disease, etc. It was almost like a reference guide to me. It made me feel much better after i had gained all the needed knowledge. STD'Sare one of those "quiet diseases", that nobody really talks about...However,you have to get your information from somewhere, right?....So why not get it from a reliable source with a huge layout of information.(even pictures)So, all in all i rate this book a 5, i doubt it could throughly describe std's any better then it did. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars clear thorough facts
As a Public Health professional, I have read many books about sexually transmitted diseases over the years. I recommend this one (the second edition)for professionals and interested laypersons. I believe it has the most complete and up to date information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sexually Transmitted Disease by Marr
This book explains the male and female anatomy with particular
emphasis on the causes and prevention of classic sexually
transmitted diseases and disease processes. The author
discusses herpes, lice, warts, yeast infections, testicle
bacteria, gonorrhea, prostrate infections, urinary tract
infections and a whole host of infectious diseases. There is
an exhaustive discussion of safe sex which includes:
o monogamy
o abstinence
o testing and checkups
o avoidance of risk behaviors
o outercourse
o chlamydia bacteria and special tests PCR, LCR

This book is valuable for anyone travelling overseas with an
expectation of engaging multiple sex partners. The author
explains the major disease processes, prevention strategies,
testing, diagnosis and modern treatment modalities. The book is
worth the price if you have questions about sexual contact and
the risks/precautions involved.

4-0 out of 5 stars If use is any indication...
I am a consumer health librarian, and I keep a pretty close eye on my book collection to see what is being used.Although this book has never checked out in the 10 months we've had it, several times a week it moves around: it gets misshelved, set on top of the bookcase, taken into our waiting or reading area, left on a chair, etc. What this says to me is that there is a real demand for this information, but people are not inclined to check the book out and take it home (who wants to be spotted on the bus carrying a book on STDs?).So, people are sneaking a peek at the information when they can.

Besides being heavily used, this is a fine book that covers the full gamut of STDs, including many that I had not heard of (and I'm pretty savvy about medical terms and disease names), and helpful sections on genital anatomy, "What is 'safe sex'?", a symptom key, what to expect in an examination, and a section on how open communication can help save your life and health in a sexual situation.I wouldn't call the writing style fascinating, but it gets the information across in spades, and does not talk down or confuse. The book also has the full complement of appendices: resource list, glossary, bibliography (largely clinical medical articles), and an excellent index. This is a seriously good consumer health book, and I wish they were all like this, regardless of topic.

p.s.--When I went to get the book in the library stacks just now, it was misshelved again.;)

4-0 out of 5 stars The Hard Truth
I read the book for a research paper for one of my biology classes and was very impressed with it. The writer successfully explained in layman's terms the harsh truth about STDs. I recommend it to all. Everyone needs to be aware of the world we live in and we need to know the price we can pay for the decisions we make. I live in Miami, where the sex scene is everywhere: music, the club scene, movies, the media. You need to know before the bombardment of sexhits you, so that when you make your decisions, or mistakes, you are prepared.

Educational, and yet interesting. ... Read more

Book Description

Before AIDS, the role of behavioral interventions in preventing transmission of sexually transmitted diseases was acknowledged in text books and journals but rarely promoted effectively in public health practice. Informed by a comprehensive knowledge of behavioral theory, intervention methods, and affected populations, the authors of this important book examine the central role of behavioral interventions in combating STDs. The book addresses the complexities and social contexts of human behaviors which spread STDs, the cultural barriers to STD education (ranging from conservative mores to "stay out of my bedroom" libertarianism), and the sociopolitical nuances surrounding treatment. Over forty contributors offer a practical appraisal of what is being done now and what can be improved, such as: an overview of current behavioral and biomedical interventions for STD prevention and control, a discussion of what works for individuals, groups, and communities, up to date thinking about such traditional prevention approaches as partner notification and health care seeking, STD prevention strategies with high-risk populations, including drug users, gay men, teenagers, incarcerated persons, and persons with repeat infections, the state of prevention technology: condoms, vaccines, the Internet, ethical, economic, and policy issues in STD prevention, applying intervention models to real-world situations, guidelines for program evaluation and improvement.

As STDs and AIDS remain top priorities for public health and private sector practitioners, researchers, and educators, "Behavioral Interventions for Prevention and Control of Sexually Transmitted Diseases" gives a long-neglected field the attention it deserves. This authoritative resource is sure to influence public health practice and policy in an ever-evolving social climate.

Book Description
The teen years can be a minefield of confusing and embarrassing experiences, with transitions in every aspect of life: interacting with family, socializing with friends, and coping with a school workload and perhaps a first job. Add to this burden the need to endure the physical changes that come with puberty and young adulthood. Teens often feel uncomfortable discussing these changes with adults and may be especially hesitant to approach parents or teachers with questions about sexual health. Yet many teens do need guidance in understanding the reproductive-health issues they face, whether or not they are personally sexually active.

This volume of the Teen Health Series provides information about all aspects of sexual health, from what's normal and what's not during puberty to facts about sexually transmitted diseases. Also addressed are questions about hygiene, diseases of the reproductive system that are not sexually transmitted, pregnancy and contraception, and societal issues such as date rape. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars curriculum is one that should be mandatory in all middle schools
How do you teach adolescents to save their own lives? How do you reach through the ideas they have about STDs and their own omnipotence? "EveryBody" is THE curriculum for students in grades 5-9, about HIV, AIDS and STD prevention. This is a powerful guide for teachers, counselors and parents to utilize in making a difference in, and more than likely saving, the lives of today's youth.

Communication, in the fight against HIV and other communicable diseases, is essential between child and adult, teacher and student, and all individuals dealing in possibly unsafe behaviors. How is communication learned? "EveryBody" opens the doors to communication. The activities, meticulously described, spark discussions and discussions encourage empowerment in the individual.

Many lessons are shared in "EveryBody": the specifics of STDs and prevention methods, the generalities of stereotypes, risk taking, reduction and elimination, and so much more. Students will come away with a better understanding of these topics and just as important, a better understanding of themselves.

Some adults may think that "EveryBody" goes beyond what is expected for a 5th-9th grade curriculum. However, "EveryBody" is developmentally appropriate and extensive research shows that is does indeed meet the needs of today's adolescents. Every year in the U.S., half of all new HIV infections occur among people under the age of 25. One in four of new infections occur among those between the ages of 13 and 20. Isn't it best to empower our youth before they become a statistic? The fact is that the majority of American adolescents are sexually active by 12th grade. This is life threatening behavior. Addressing the factors head on is the only way to prevent fatal mistakes.

The curriculum that "EveryBody" is, is not lecture and testing, but rather it is innovative and connected to scientific theory. Students act out the lessons and in essence, become the subject matter. For example, when marker ink, representing infectious bodily fluids, makes its way from student to student, they see point blank, how easily they can become infected, and learn how to prevent that from happening. A fairly simple exercise that will hit home and, in context, will get the message across that HIV prevention is a very serious matter.

The lessons are well written, comprehensive and easily comprehended. The curriculum is one that should be mandatory in all middle schools. Our youth need to learn responsibility for their health and as a parent, I would rather these lessons not be learned the hard way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for our middle and high school students
EveryBody is just the sort of honest, compassionate work to open the dialogues we must be having with our middle and high school students.Deborah Schoeberlein did thorough research, not only in HIV risk factors and trasmission, but in educational models so that teens will listen.School districts, youth groups, health classes need EveryBody.

5-0 out of 5 stars Youth really learn with Everybody Curriculum
One of the unique aspects of the Everybody model is that is very interactive and help youth to be fully engage in the learning process. I am using Everybody Curriculum in my skills building training with youth. I found students really learn a lot about this disease, their own attitudes toward prevention and how to be respectful of their lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Everybody:..., Revised Edition"
Absolutely first rate. The best literature on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Parent of Daughter
We know that communication is critically important and that pre-teens and teens will make better decisions with good information. But discussing subjects that most of us know little about, or find difficult to discuss, with our children is critical. This book is a must for parents, because frankly, is your child's school doing everything they should be doing? Will the teachers be around when your child needs your help?Read the book!!Get informed! And get the tools to be the best parent you can be. ... Read more
