4-0 out of 5 stars The poignant voices of people who wear their suffering on the skin
The case histories of the people who suffer a range of debilitating skin conditions are beautifully described, analyzed and brought to a touching and meaningful conclusion. The authorcharts each of her patient's personal, medical and psychological history, taking the reader on a journey illustrating the meaning and purpose of the skin complaints. The resolution of the problems through psychoanalysis after traditional medicine had failed was profound.

If anyone has any doubts about how emotional and psychological conflicts can be expressed in skin disease, this book will go a long way to dispel the skepticism. In particular the author's patients themselves were disinclined to believe that their issues were rooted in their psychological and emotional make up and experiences. Reading about their transformations and healing as they shifted to a better understanding of themselves was touching and humbling.

As a psychologist and psychotherapist I found the cases typical of the population that receives mental health services in an outpatient setting. The one reservation I have is that the first part of the book devoted to Jungian psychology and multi-cultural healing didn't transition well into the case histories.

5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant and intelligent analysis
The thing about this book is that although it is about psychosomatic approaches to common skin diseases, it is written by a highly qualified Dermatologist (Fellow of the Royal college of Physicians). This makes for a very convincing read. Everyone with chronic skin disease should consider reading it if they have explored every other avenue. There is hope within these pages! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of info, but pictures often too small
This is a small manual, 4" x 6", which appears to be mainly designed to carry in your pocket as you see patients. It has quite a lot of information on some 200 different skin disorders.

I returned this item because there were a couple of things I didn't like about the manual:

1) A number of the pictures are too small to see the details of the skin problem well.

2) All of the authors are family practitioners. For a dermatology reference, I'd like at least one author to be a dermatologist. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Old and Too Expensive
This was a great book in its day. Unfortunately, Dr. Hurwitz has passed away since this edition was published, so who knows if it will be updated. I hate to give it only two stars, but in 2001 this early 90s book is too old an too expensive.

Bernard Cohen's Pediatric Dermatology is easier to read/use and is mor current (1999) and has better pictures. I strongly recommend it over this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars comprehensive
Even if this book by now is quite old it's probably the best textbook on pediatric dermatology available. The first edition was extremely useful and this second one is even better. It's very comprehensive and there is practically nothing in the field you won't find. This is true even for diseases you miss in texbooks about infections, likeperianal streptococcal cellulitis. The register is good, the pictures are very good and it's just the references which by now are outdated. Let's hope the author will write a third edition soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fast and good access to pediatric dermatology
It is a good book to dermatologist interesting in this topic, because we access a large information about pathology of children. It's a important reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Landmark Clinical Reference --A Classic in its Field!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
excellent textbook, superb schematic drawings of each syndrome. A must belong in any dermatologist book-shelf.
Shipping overseas in my case with no trouble and in perfect condition.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must for dermatology residents
I received this book compliments of Ortho Dermatological as a first-year derm resident. I read it before mock boards in the spring and I was amazed at how many questions I got just because of this book. I would not have mastered the presented syndromes by reading about them out of standard derm texts.

The key features of findings listed by system and the excellent illustrations are very conducive to learning the material. There could be more syndromes included (Watson's, Dysplastic nevus sydrome, etc.).Also, it definitely needs updating. The quick pace of new knowlege (especially in the area of identified gene defects) kept me busily making notes in the margins before the next mock boards.

Pediatric dermatologists are going to need a more comprehensive text but for residents, this is an essential tool for mastering these disorders and passing the boards.

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable, practical guide
Dr. Spitz's Genodermatoses is an invaluable part of a dermatologist's armamentarium. Its thoughtful juxtaposition of textual disease highlights with unforgettable illustrations makes learning (and remembering) this somewhat esoteric topic much more painless and, arguably, fun. This Guide serves not only as a quick reference, but also as an irreplaceable practical study tool for such resident hurdles as the dermatology mock and real boards. However, in view of the increasing scientific precision in the understanding of genetic disease, some of the contents need updating.Looking forward to the next edition with eager anticipation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must For Derm Residents
OK. If you are a dermatology resident - you should get this book. It has most of the major genodermatoses that you wil be asked about. It needs updating, as do all textbooks, but only in that the causes of many of the diseases have been found ! (well done science!). Most dermatologists have a good visual memory - each disease has one page of summarised information about the condition e.g. inheritance, etiology, review of affected systems, differential diagnoses, managment etc On the other side of the page there is an illustration of the typical patient with the disease, with labeling of all the parts that have 'gone wrong'. In addition there are photographs of actual patients the disease. Some of these photos have reached cult status among residents - everyone loves the kid with the afro! This book summarises some of the highest yield mock board material around. You can be garaunteed at least 10-15% of the board questions can be answered from this book. It your program is not doing Spitz review - then good luck, you will need it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just a so-so text
This book was given to me; it is a decent reference text/atlas with somegood color illustrations; however, I believe that another text --Recognizable patterns of human malformation: genetic, embryologic, andclinical aspects by David W. Smith -- is far superior. I very muchrecommend the Smith text over the Spitz text.Although Recognizablepatterns of human malformation does not have color illustrations, it ismuch more comprehensive, easier to read (in my opinion), and cheaper ($65). ... There are particular dermatological problems (such as skin cancers, lymphomas and blistering diseases) that present special difficulty in the elderly. These are the subject of this book which is written for dermatologists who want to know about the skin of their older patients, and for geriatricians whose patients have skin problems. The book is divided into three sections. The first deals with the scientific processes in ageing skin, and the second with the differential diagnosis of common skin problems. This consists of short essays on 12 different common cutaneous manifestations that will offer great practical help to non-specialists in making diagnoses. The third and major section of the book focuses on all the important clinical areas of the subspecialty and enables the physician, once a diagnosis has been made, to address the question of management. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Too Comprehensive?
This is an excellent comprehensive and beautifully illustrated pediatric dermatology tome. As such, it should be particularly useful to specialists in this area. As for value to the primary care provider, it may be a bit much. I like to maintain a library of various pediatric subspecialty texts in addition to the standard Nelson Textbook of Pediatrics. Given so many areas to cover, I like to keep these in a price range not much north of $100, and preferably under that. So, while this is a superb text, my preference as a primary care provider is for Weston's Color Textbook of Pediatric Dermatology. It is organized well, illustrated nicely, and priced better. It is also sufficient for all primary care needs. If it's not in there, it merits a dermatology referral.
