Product Description
This book has been created for patients who have decided to make education and research an integral part of the treatment process. Although it also gives information useful to doctors, caregivers and other health professionals, it tells patients where and how to look for information covering virtually all topics related to sleep apnea (also central sleep apnea; nocturnal upper airway occlusion; obstructive sleep apnea; Ondine's curse; pediatric obstructive sleep apnea; Pickwickian syndrome), from the essentials to the most advanced areas of research. The title of this book includes the word official. This reflects the fact that the sourcebook draws from public, academic, government, and peer-reviewed research. Selected readings from various agencies are reproduced to give you some of the latest official information available to date on sleep apnea. Given patients' increasing sophistication in using the Internet, abundant references to reliable Internet-based resources are provided throughout this sourcebook. Where possible, guidance is provided on how to obtain free-of-charge, primary research results as well as more detailed information via the Internet. E-book and electronic versions of this sourcebook are fully interactive with each of the Internet sites mentioned (clicking on a hyperlink automatically opens your browser to the site indicated). Hard-copy users of this sourcebook can type cited Web addresses directly into their browsers to obtain access to the corresponding sites. In addition to extensive references accessible via the Internet, chapters include glossaries of technical or uncommon terms. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Kept me up all night!
What a page turner! The author's breathless prose and the plot's building pressure kept me gasping for more. I can't wait to read Philip M Parker's other books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very up to date, cutting edge book!
This is useful background reading for all patients and docs who have or work with sleep apnea. For patients, it is helpful understanding cases that are either mild or severe. The advanced portion of the book is well written, easy to understand, and very up to date.Very useful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful for new patients
This book definitely serves as a great tool for new patients. It not only points to the right sources of information on this disease, but also helps in finding contacts with people suffering with this disease (support groups, etc).

2-0 out of 5 stars Maybe good for new patients?
I might have found this book to be a useful reference, had sleep apnea been new to me.Having advanced questions, I felt disappointed.I failed to note that the author has written Official Sourcebooks about a remarkable variety of disorders.I would prefer a book by a physician. The reader might do as well with a web search. ... Product Description
Obstructive sleep apnea is a disorder characterised by repetitive, complete or partial closure of the upper airway during sleep. Many factors, including craniofacial abnormalities, influence upper airway obstruction during sleep. Sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) is related to different combinations of anatomical and functional aspects that produce the airway collapse in individual patients. To compensate for the craniofacial abnormalities and treat sleep apnea, there are some dental and maxillofacial surgical modalities. In this book, treatment and research of SAS are described mainly from clinical and neurophysiological aspects in the stomatognathic system. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Early research into sleep apnea
The collection of writings provides insight into the early research done on the medical condition - sleep apnea. The writings are the product of a meeting hosted by the Kroc Foundation and edited by two of the great researchers on sleep disordered breathing from Stanford University - Drs. Christian Guilleminault and William C. Dement.

The papers in this book were written in 1977 when there two options for treating sleep apnea: inserting a tube in the throat below the upper airway (a trach) or radical weight loss (800 calories a day).We have come a very long way in 30 short years.

Of some interest is one of the co-authors on one essay - Colin E. Sullivan, who would, four years later, author a study on a new device that showed great promise in relieving the suffering from sleep apnea - continuous positive airway prressure (CPAP) and that changed everything.

It is a must have for those interested in the history of medical research on sleep apnea. ... Read more

Product Description
Sleep apnea or sleep apnoea is a sleep disorder characterised by pauses in breathing during sleep. These episodes, called apneas (literally, "without breath"), each last long enough so one or more breaths are missed, and occur repeatedly throughout sleep. There are two distinct forms of sleep apnea: Central and Obstructive. Breathing is interrupted by the lack of effort in Central Sleep Apnea, but from a physical block to airflow despite effort in Obstructive Sleep Apnea. In Mixed Sleep Apnea, both types of events occur. Regardless of type, the individual affected with sleep apnea is rarely (if ever) aware of having difficulty breathing, even upon awakening. Sleep apnea is recognised as a problem by others witnessing the individual during episodes, or is suspected because of its effects on the body. This volume offers new and valuable research developments. ... Read more
