Product Description

Although Gerd Heinrich, a devoted naturalist, specialized in wasps, Bernd Heinrich tried to distance himself from his "old-fashioned" father, becoming a hybrid: a modern, experimental biologist with a naturalist's sensibilities.

In this extraordinary memoir, the award-winning author shares the ways in which his relationship with his father, combined with his unique childhood, molded him into the scientist, and man, he is today. From Gerd's days as a soldier in Europe and the family's daring escape from the Red Army in 1945 to the rustic Maine farm they came to call home, Heinrich relates it all in his trademark style, making science accessible and awe-inspiring.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but...
This was an interesting and well-written book for nature lovers; the historical element blends well also. But I think the author could have put the minutiae of his research and dissertation in an appendix. This really threw me off and I had a difficult time wanting to finish the book, though I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars A memoir of nature and a father
The author weaves a story of his love of nature and his father, whose influence was pervasive, and at times, difficult. In addition, a harrowing account of the author and family's experiences during WWII.For those of us who seldom read history, this part of the novel was very illuminating.I also found his father's expeiences during his expeditions very interesting to read about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book and writer
I have never read any of his books before or knew anything about him.I would say this is an important book to read before all others as it gives his life story and his father's, to understand how he related to his father and the work he did, as well as how the war's hardships influenced his early life.It is most interesting in all aspects; I will say there were a very few places where some research he was doing went into a little too tedious detail for me, but I just skipped those few paragraphs without losing any of the story. It turned into a pageturner for me and I eagerly anticipated when I could next sit down and read more, and soon I was finished, before I wanted it to be over.I will read more of his books definitely.I highly recommend this one to start with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Biography, History and Biology
To understand how the practice of biology has changed in the last century, how biology shapes our thinking today, how real people contribute to the advance of science and how the workday world has changed in 100 years. This is actually light and enjoyable biography, good for vacation reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing life, both of father and son, and a love letter to Maine
I have read several of Bernd Heinrich's books about ravens and the woods of Maine, and was eager to read this book about his father's life and his own.I didn't expect it to be half as wonderful a book as it was, though. His father, Gerd, lived a life few people could imagine, with riches to rags stories, war stories, romance all over, travels and always, collecting bird, mammal and especially insect specimens.

My favorite part of this book, though, is once the family moves to Western Maine.I can't imagine a better love letter to Maine than the middle of the book, where a young Bernd starts a new life in the US in the woods of Maine. It almost made me cry.The kindness of their Maine neighbors, the beauty and abundance of the woods, the dream life of a young boy who loves nature, all was written about in a masterful way.I also loved hearing about Bernd's years at the University of Maine---my own alma mater. In this world of striving for name brand colleges, it was lovely to read about the joys of life on the most beautiful campus in the world---UM Orono, and to know first hand the dorms, the Bear's Den, Pat's, all the places mentioned.

I was so happy to see a quote from my favorite Maine author (and distant relative) Louise Dickinson Rich contained in these pages. She also wrote of the woods of Western Maine, and I am sure she would have loved Bernd.

If you have any interest in one of many subjects (World War I or II, Germany, Poland, insects, Maine, ravens, running, boarding schools, bees...I could go on and on!) this is a book you will want to read. ... Read more

Everyone knows the story of Sleeping Beauty: A handsome prince rescues a beautiful princess from a wicked fairy's terrible sleeping spell.

This story is just like the original. Except for the sarcastic frog narrator, the garlic-scented fairy, and--oh yeah--the princess in this book not only sleeps and snores . . . she's also been turned into a hot-pink and purple dragon!

Certain to charm and delight fairy tale fans across the land, this raucous retelling is anything but a snoozer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Snoring Beauty
Snoring Beauty, written by Bruce Hale and illustrated by Howard Fine, is a lovely retelling of Sleeping Beauty, complete with a princess turned into a hot pink and purple dragon and a garlic smelling fairy sent to make sure the princess doesn't ever get her prince.

Beginning just as the traditional fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty does, Snoring Beauty features a royal family that has a baby and throws a party for blessing her. Instead of witch crashing the party h0wever, we find Beebo, the garlic smelling fairy, that proceeds to place a curse on the child. Wanting a good life for his baby girl, the King asks a good fairy to place a different type of curse on her, turning her into a sleeping, very loudly snoring, dragon on her sixteenth birthday.

She does indeed turn into a dragon on her birthday, a beautiful hot pink and purple dragon. Unfortunately, everyone in the town is forced to deal with her terrible snoring, resulting in the king making a proclamation to the town. The one man that can break the curse on his daughter and awaken her, will receive her hand in marriage.

And on and on the story goes. It's really a very cute retelling of Sleeping Beauty, and the illustrations are just fantastic. This would be a great home read aloud (a bit long for story times) and would be perfect for a unit on fairy tale retellings. Very cute overall!

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading is fun!
Snoring Beauty
My six year old Grandaughter is reading far above her level and is into Chapter Books. It's great to "hand her a curve" such as Snoring Beauty.
She opened the Christmas package and laughed and said-that's not right.
The story is well written and requires some reading skill. It challenges her imagination and,I hope, gives her a hint of the wonders out there in books.Thank You.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a favorite!
My kids and I LOVED this book. The writting and the pictures were so funny! My three year old has begged me to buy this book for her ever since we took it back to the library. It is a new twist on the fairytale style. We will give this book to all our friends!

5-0 out of 5 stars Snoring Beauty
What an adventure! The vocabulary and subtle remarks make it fun for the adult reader as well. The artwork draws the eye to such elaborate, joyful characters. My grandkids and I have enjoyed many hours of storytime and they all proclaim it the BEST READ in a long time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outrageous Humor I laughed over each page!
This was such a funny book, I love the humor, the names the story line and the Hippity Hops!I just have one question, although I should probally ask Howard Fine the illustrator this question... on the "Pie" page what kind of Pie is the "Tiger and the speed boat" I think I guessed all the otherpie types and laughedbut that one eluded us.And not really a question but a statement, we're not sure we really believe you Bruce that your wife doesn't snore... ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money - just go see a specialist.
I think the reviewer "A Reader" below should be renamed "a writer of this book".This book has such basic information that I am upset I didn't write it myself.I can sum up this book with one statement: "If you snore - go see a sleep specialist".Mr. Wirth also summed it up well with Du-u-u-u-u-u-hh!

If you or your loved one is snoring don't turn to this book for a quick, inexpensive cure.Like the snoring products at the pharmacy - it's not going to help you. You won't find any information here that you don't already know.

Save your money for parking at the sleep clinic!

Buy this book if you snore--or if your bed partner snores. It will change the wayyou sleep and feel. Everyone over age 30 should read this--and prepare ahead of time for the "snoring years" at midlife.Excellent book and scientifically sound.

Superb book on how to stop snoring--and how to know if you may have OSA (sleep apnea). I bought this book because I was SICK AND TIRED of being TIRED all the time--my husband has snored for 9 years. For the firsttime--in a long time--he is NOT snoring and I'm sleeping 7 long hourswithout awakening!!! That's great! Buy this book--your sleep will thankyou.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative book!
Wake Up! You're Snoring presented an excellent review of the daytime consequences of snoring! Most people do not understand that those horrible symptoms they have are a result of not sleeping well. This book covers a lot about weight management and exercise. It suggests different treatments for sleep apnea which is the same information that every sleep book offers. This book did go into more detail about different surgeries that are available.Unfortunately, the mentioned treatments do not have a high rate of success. The last half of the book is a good resource for sleep centers. ... Read more

Product Description
In this amusing, delightful guide, readers will discover all the known remedies for snoring, and find out which ones work all the time, which work sometimes, and which never work at all. From tennis balls on the back to laser surgery on the throat, Schoenstein examines every treatment--and reveals the benefits and drawbacks of each. A fascinating blend of fact and entertaining wit, this guide was edited by one of America's leading otolaryngologists, Yosef P. Krespi, M.D., Director of Otolaryngology, St. Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital Center.Amazon.com Review
Ralph Schoenstein has made it his personal quest not only to cure his own snoring, but to investigate everything about the dreaded phenomenon. The author combines humor (ongoing dialogues with his long-suffering wife keep us abreast of his progress) with the most recent reports from the evolving science of otolaryngology; seven eminent physicians have lent their time and knowledge to his study.

You'll discover the most common causes of snoring: a long uvula and a small upper airway; you'll learn entertaining facts: "Normal speech is about forty decibels of loudness and a baby crying about sixty. Loud snorers, however, can hit eighty decibels, which is about the same volume as a jack-hammer or the barking of a dog"; and you'll discover the range of the problem, from the light to the life-threatening, plus myriad gimmicks, clinics, and pills. And Schoenstein gives a thorough rundown on cures, from the low-impact to the drastic (i.e., laser surgery). Stop the Snoring is up-to-date, fun to read, and reliable--only those treatments that have been thoroughly tested are recommended. A list of every sleep disorder center in America is also included for those serious about stopping the snoring once and for all. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Honest Look at Snoring
This was a very honest book about snoring and the problems it causes.I snore and I know I snore loud.Girlfriends, family, and roommates have suffered greatly as a result.I liked this book because the author was very honest about his snoring problem and the problems it creates forothers. It is a short book and does not take long to read.I also enjoyedhow the author fairly evaluated the many "so called" snoringtreatments out there.Masks, surgery, nose strips, tennis balls, all"supposed" cures which did not work for the author or mostsnorers.Sadly the author had no answers to cure snoring and unfortunatelythat is the reality. However, kudos for the author for openly discussing aproblem many of us suffer from but are embarrassed to talk about. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars deceptive publication date
Although there's a recent publication date it has not been updated.Text and pictures are dated. Thus some deception with recent edition date.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I was recently diagnosed with having sleep apnea and since that time I have read every book that I can on the subject. This book is excellent and very informative for anyone who has sleep apnea and wants to learn all that they can about it.

1-0 out of 5 stars apnea
I have been diagnosed with apnea and use a CPAP. I bought four books to gain a deeper insight into my condition. While informative this book does not cover the subject nearly as well as Sleep Apnea - Phantom of the Night. I would not recommend purchase of this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great info - where did they get the pictures?!
Great information, well conveyed. One of the authors is a sufferer; the other is the spouse of a snorer so they know of what they speak. Couldn't help but marvel at the grainy, awful, poor resolution pictures that look like they came from a 1960 science book. I guess the small circulation / audience doesn't justify using current technolgy.

Very helpful and I would buy it again.

1-0 out of 5 stars not what I needed

Product Description
From the man who closed the lid forever on the "toilet seat debate" in the New York Times bestseller Essential Manners for Men comes the follow-up book that paves the way for couples everywhere to fix relationship problems before they start.

Peter Post offers the secrets to a long and happy marriage or partnership -- without psychoanalysis or prescription medication. The good news: often just a few simple words or actions can mend a rift. Essential Manners for Couples reveals how easy it can be to keep the spark in your relationship.

With self-deprecating humor, clarity, and wit, Peter recounts couples' most mischievous manners foibles (his own included). Essential Manners for Couples is based on Emily Post Institute surveys, Peter's years of fielding thousands of etiquette questions, popular demand from couples attending his national lectures and workshops, and his experience as a husband and father.

Peter looks at couples' private lives and public lives, revealing the common "flashpoints" -- the places, situations, and times when inconsiderate behavior is most likely to invade your blissful coupledom. He offers "etiquette imperatives" -- simple truths and concise nuggets of advice not to be ignored, including:

Permissive flirting: How to define parameters and enjoy verbal combat with the opposite sex.

The "Chore I.Q." test -- are you really divvying up the workload fairly?

When you hate her friends: socializing with the enemy.

Enter children: Good parents still spend time together as a couple.

Bedroom etiquette -- getting beyond the headache excuse.

Interactions with in-laws -- smooth merge or crash and burn?

Where to go for the holidays: surviving family visits and how to say "no."

Balancing life with your other significant other -- your work ... and much more.

Essential Manners for Couples is a must-have resource for the couple who wants to celebrate their union and strengthen it. As Peter Post says, "By using the principles of etiquette, couples can avoid many of the potholes on the road of their shared life, and the ones they do hit are smaller and more manageable." With this book in hand, you'll enhance your relationship, head off hostilities, and have fun doing it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A lot of the obvious
You should read this at least once in case there's anything you don't already know, but if you're a conscientious person, you're probably already doing everything in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reading for couples wanting a Healthful Relationship
Take a look at what we believe is an essential book about being 'coupled', which relates directly to the idea of caffection. Grandson of Emily Post (yes, that Emily Post), Peter Post has compiled Essential Manners for Couples. This is sensible, comprehensive advice on everything 'From Snoring and Sex to Finances and Fighting...' as the jacket says. Useful advice inside covers a surprising range of common and not so common situations, like signals we send, interaction with other couples, our actions in public, work (which the author labels, trenchantly the 'other significant other'), such things as sex when the kids are in the house, and having houseguests. Underlying all the advice is the simple rule of good etiquette. In this book, that rule outlines how etiquette applies to happy couples, and can be a terrific guide to calmer, stronger marriage. Our only disappointment in the book was its minimal attention to financial patterns in a marriage, money being number 1 or 2 on the list of marital stressors, particularly now. Perhaps that's another book. But for great advice on etiquette in happy coupledom, Peter Post's Essential Manners for COUPLES, ©2005 is 'essential' reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL MANNERS FOR COUPLES
We used to use good manners; but, it seems through time this art is being lost. When I came across this book I bought it and am not disappointed becasue it is very helpful, especially to enlighten your spouse in a way that won't offend. After all, my point is to make better relationship not build a wall between us.If you feel this way you will enjoy reading this book of today's good manners. While I may not agree with everything exactly because I still believe in many of the good old fashioned manners, this book offeres some etiquette that I hadn't been exposed to; like, snoring!and fighting fair...I think anyone interested in improving his/her manners or learning about what good manners even are today, this is a very good book. It even covers the 'art of listening' which too many don't do now-a-days.I recomend this book. :-)

3-0 out of 5 stars A good reminder when tensions flare
This book does a good job of addressing common marital (or co-habitation) problems in an objective way. It's a good reminder of how to fight fair and to think of things from your partner's perspective, something that often gets lost in the heat of battle. It doesn't really tell you anything you don't already know (or should know), but if you can remember some of the points and try to implement them regularly so that they become second-nature, it can make those annoying habits of others -- and yourself! -- more bearable. If you've tried to convince your partner that manners are important even (or especially) when it's just the two of you, reading excerpts of this book to him or her may help. It's very balanced, as far as the male vs. female perspective goes, and doesn't approach conflict as if one sex is always right. That objectivity improves its credibility.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's About Time Someone Wrote a Book Like This
What's the etiquette for sex, dividing the chores, snoring, where to go for the holidays, sleeping on the couch, getting along with the spouse's friends?
The author reminds us that actions, appearance and words greatly affect our relationships. The recommendations he makes may seem at times to be obvious, but too often couples forget to base their own actions on "consideration, respect and honesty."He lists "Etiquette Imperatives" that cover the not-to-be-ignored basics for couples.
Peter Post is the great-grandson of Emily Post and he wrote Essential Manners for Men plus monthly etiquette columns.
The reviews have been quite favorable:
*"Thorough...straightforward....Resolving those hot-button issues...may well prevent a public flame-out."(New York Times)
*"stresses handholding and communication." (Atlanta Journal Constitution)
*"Most of us could stand to be reminded once in a while to be nice to each other."(Chicago Sun-Times) ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining , informative but still lacking
The title says "a medically proven program to cure...". After reading this book, I did not learn about the medically proven program. The author says the purpose of the book is to get relief from snoring. Page 16:"Researchers and clinicians have finally isolated the underlying causes of snoring and are now discovering a variety of realistic treatments for it. These can bring gratifying results to both snorers and snorees." My question is: what are these treatments? I did not read anything new: lose weight, take drugs, get an appliance, have surgery but we all know that these treatments have low success rates. The author did educate the reader on some of the original anti- snoring devices, showing many pictures with descriptions. He also addressed children who snore and the problems this can cause. Parents and pediatricians need to be educated about snoring and children. There is a great description and explanation for snoring and sleep apnea. However, just like so many of the other books available on snoring that say they have "the" treatment, there was nothing new here.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Sand Man Cometh.
Even though this book is getting to be a bit old there is quite a bit of helpful and interesting stuff within it's covers. The author writes with a sense of humour, so it is quite a pleasant read.

The many causes of snoring are shown and why they happen and how they might be corrected.

The physically and emotionally destructive side of snoring is shown and ways of dealing with them are discussed.

You will be shown all kinds of gadgets that are/where supposed to stop snoring and exercises that can help stop snoring.

You will also learn about medical procedures that may help you stop snoring. And how to select the proper physician.

Quite a helpful book if you haven't read about snoring before. I believe there are newer books out on this subject by the same
author. ... Read more

This title is useful for people who snore. People with severe sleep apnea may struggle for breath all through the night, not breathing for as long as 90 seconds at a time during their sleep. This syndrome, which affects at least four percent of men and two percent of women, can cause daytime fatigue, traffic and work accidents, deteriorating cognitive abilities, and cardiovascular problems. In this book Peretz Lavie, an expert in sleep research, provides an accessible discussion of the history, physiology, and risk factors of sleep apnea. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars sleep apnea
I have been diagnosed with apnea and use a CPAP. I bought four books to gain a deeper insight into my condition. While informative this book does not cover the subject nearly as well as Sleep Apnea - Phantom of the Night. I would not recommend purchase of this book. In fact this was the least helpful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not What I Was Looking For
OK, it's carefully researched and has some interesting historical notes, but I was looking an in-depth exploration of sleep apnea. This isn't it. Also, I noticed the language was slightly odd in places. I think it was translated into English, not always successfully in spots.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information on Sleep Apnea
I was recently diagnosed with Sleep Apnea and wanted to learn all that I could about it.

This book was filled with information and I would definately recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about this condition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful Information
When first diagnosed with sleep apnea I didn't know where to turn. This book really helped me.I was an easy read and had alot of useful information.I would recommend it to anyone who suffers as I do.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding book!
Restless Nights is a wonderful book. It takes a serious medical subject, sleep apnea, and explains it in a way that is both intriguing and fascinating. The book is a comprehensive yet readable explanation of this potentially serious medical problem, as well as its many serious health and quality-of-life consequences.
Like his earlier book, The Enchanted World of Sleep, (which I found also a captivating read), Restless Nights explains the science of the syndrome, the most current research, implications for public health (such as its impact on transportation safety, work and general quality of life), and proposals for reform of treatment approaches. Most importantly, Lavie discusses the syndrome in the larger context of its impact on general health, particularly cardiovascular disease.
The layperson will find this book readable and engrossing-Lavie's style interweaves scientific information with practical examples, including his historical and literary survey of sleep apnea.Remember Joe from Charles Dickens' The Pickwick Papers?
The medical professional will also find this book must reading.Recent research-some of it performed and published by Lavie and his Technion colleagues-is beginning to shed light on the connections between sleep apnea and general health.
Lavie is particularly well-qualified to write this book.According to the book, he has helped establish and administer sleep research and treatment centers on several continents, including a group of clinics at major hospitals affiliated with Harvard. He is the past Dean of the Medical Faculty of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology.I also know from my past reading that Lavie has also been among the pioneers and leading researchers in sleep medicine for the past quarter century.
I recommend this book highly. ... Read more
