Product Description
This book describes the clinical presentation of social anxiety disorder, presents theoretical perspectives on its etiology, and examines the latest empirical data with respect to both pharmacological and behavioral interventions. Social anxiety disorder occurs in children, adolescents, and adults, but its manifestation and treatment differ depending on developmental factors. Drawing from a broad literature base as well as their extensive clinical experience, the authors illustrate the impact of developmental stage on all aspects of the disorder. They also provide practical implementation guidelines, enhanced by case examples, tips on patient management, lists of assessment instruments, and sample forms to use with clients. Since publication of the first edition in 1998, knowledge about social anxiety disorder has advanced on several fronts. The new edition includes information from new studies differentiating patterns of distress characteristic of social anxiety disorder vs. social phobia. It draws on more substantive data bases to support firmer conclusions about the presentation of social anxiety disorder among children and adolescents as well as across various ethnocultural groups. New assessment strategies reviewed in this book include neuroassessments using magnetic resonance imaging, and well-validated self-report instruments and clinician rating scales. Authors review greatly expanded literature addressing pharmacological treatment and psychosocial treatments. New case descriptions and clinical materials are also included. This highly informative and comprehensive volume will be illuminating reading for practitioners, researchers, and students. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent developmental perspective on social phobia
Beidel and Turner have spent many years leading research in the various aspects of shyness and social phobia in children. This book is a compilation of work in that area. It is an important contribution to the literature. What makes it different from other books on social phobia is that it focuses not only on the developmental aspect of the condition but also on how to manage the condition in children as well as adults. Each component of effective treatment is discussed and treatment for children and adults is compared and contrasted. This fills many important gaps in the area of social phobia.

Product Description

Social skills are at the core of mental health, so much so that deficits in this area are a criterion of clinical disorders, across both the developmental spectrum and the DSM. The Practitioner’s Guide to Empirically-Based Measures of Social Skills gives clinicians and researchers an authoritative resource reflecting the ever growing interest in social skills assessment and its clinical applications. This one-of-a-kind reference approaches social skills from a social learning perspective, combining conceptual background with practical considerations, and organized for easy access to material relevant to assessment of children, adolescents, and adults. The contributors’ expert guidance covers developmental and diversity issues, and includes suggestions for the full range of assessment methods, so readers can be confident of reliable, valid testing leading to appropriate interventions.

Key features of the Guide:

  • An official publication of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies
  • Describes empirically-based assessment across the lifespan.
  • Provides in-depth reviews of nearly 100 measures, their administration and scoring, psychometric properties, and references.
  • Highlights specific clinical problems, including substance abuse, aggression, schizophrenia, intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, and social anxiety.
  • Includes at-a-glance summaries of all reviewed measures.
  • Offers full reproduction of more than a dozen measures for children, adolescents, and adults, e.g. the Interpersonal Competence Questionnaire and the Teenage Inventory of Social Skills.

As social skills assessment and training becomes more crucial to current practice and research, the Practitioner’s Guide to Empirically-Based Measures of Social Skills is a steady resource that clinicians, researchers, and graduate students will want close at hand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book covers lots of ideas
This book is a little on the long side, but gives several ideas for helping a child feel less alone while away from mom/dad. The main character is a bee who tries to stay with her mom instead of going to school. We are getting ready to send my 4-year-old to preschool so I wanted her to know these feelings are normal, but that she will enjoy school as the bee does by the end of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just a great book!
Yes, this book is good for kids with seperation anxiety (my daughter could have really used it when she was in day care), but this book is also very sweet and very funny. It was really fun characters, it's wonderfully imaginative and it has a funny and touching ending that will leave a smile on your face and a lump in your throat. Great for all kids whether they have seperation anxiety or not!

3-0 out of 5 stars Didn't Like it too much
I understand the concept of the book but it didn't work with my son. He actually took the title literally so it actually backfired. I ended up giving the book away.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Preschoolers
Halfway through preschool my four yr old started having separation anxiety. I tried everything from talking about her feelings to positive reinforcement but nothing worked. It got so bad she would even cry the night before school. My daughter immediately identified with the main character in this book, Honey Maloo. We still read it several times a week. The book has made a positive impact on her and now going to school is fun and non-threatening. Like Honey Maloo, she knows mom is always waiting with big hugs for her when she comes home. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent source for little ones!
My daughter started to have issues with separation anxiety when she began first grade. After starting the new year, she started refusing to go to school and would cry for hours. It broke my heart to see her this way, and after speaking to her teacher and vice principal, we agreed that it would take some time and that we would all have to work together. I saw this book online and decided to give it a try. First of all, it is geared towards children. The pictures, as well as the story, helped my daughter relate to the main character. We even tried some of the things that the character did to help her feel secure in school. My daughter would bring a picture of us to school, or bring a small teddy bear to look at when she started to feel sad. We also cut a piece of one of my shirts and she would use it to not only dry her tears, but to carry in her pocket. In addition to the book, my daughter did see a child psychologist twice. Although it was a long and tough struggle, I am happy to say that it is now 4 months later and she is doing very well and has adjusted to first grade. What a relief! I recommend this book for those of you who find yourself in the situation that I was in. It is a great supplement to have while working towards helping your child gain that inner strength and courage. I advise you to use as many resources as you can. ... Read more

Product Description
Beautifully translated from French, The Taming of Solitude brings together the views of Freud, Klein, Hanna Segal, W. R. D. Fairbairn, D. W. Winnicott, Anna Freud, Margaret Mahler, Heinz Kohut, John Bowlby and others, presenting a comprehensive approach to the experience of loneliness, a universal phenomenon which can be observed in everyday life and in any therapeutic situation.

Jean-Michel Quinodoz begins by using a clinical example to illustrate how a patient expresses various forms of separation anxiety and how such anxiety can be transformed during the psychoanalytic process. He then examines the major psychoanalytic views on the topic and explores several technical and clinical aspects of the problems which arise from the interpretation of separation anxiety. Finally, Quinodoz introduces the concept, ``buoyancy'', to express how a successful working through of separation anxiety can lead to a capacity to ``carry'' oneself at the end of analysis. ...
