Product Description
This work presents a new theory of personality development for males, one that emphasizes gender differences in biological maturation and in socialization practices that pressure boys to become emotionally independent too soon. Stevens and Gardner believe that in extreme cases males grow up harboring a primitive, unconscious dread of being abandoned that prevents them from handling separation experiences successfully. As women become more assertive in relationships, there are more female-terminated relationships, especially divorces. As psychologists, Stevens and Gardner noticed that rejected husbands were often more at risk than their estranged wives because most men are victims of the traditional socialization techniques that deny them easy access to emotional expression and support groups. Drawing from a range of disciplines, including sociology, primatology, anthropology, and psychology, the authors draw portraits of common male personality types, many of which are ill-equipped for self-fulfilling independent adult life. ... Product Description
In authentic role-play scenarios, viewers are provided with vivid examples that illustrate how to use empirically supported treatments for social anxiety. In each scenario, a master therapist works with a client diagnosed with social anxiety. The vignettes demonstrate four evidence-based treatments for social anxiety: calming/coping strategies, cognitive restructuring, situation exposure, and social skill training. Each vignette is followed by a critique of the demonstration and helpful suggestions for clinical practice. The DVD opens with a discussion of social anxiety and diagnosing social anxiety. This is followed by an overview of empirically supported treatments for social anxiety with a strong emphasis on how to incorporate their primary objectives and interventions into the entire treatment plan. The six essential elements of a treatment plan are discussed in a tutorial section on how to create an effective and clear treatment plan that brings benefit to the client, the clinician, the agency, and the profession. Other common interventions related to social anxiety are also discussed including childhood abuse and criticism experiences, stage-of-change enhancement, reducing defensiveness, and anti-anxiety medication. In addition, common considerations in relapse prevention as are examined.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Real Account of Coming Out and having a Social Disorder
In reading this book I felt I got to know Daniela and felt her pain. Also, upon reading it, I realized there must've been some Social Anxiety Disorder in my own family and we never connected the dots.My father died not knowing he had this disorder and we always thought "that's his personality". Daniela discribes her struggles with "coming out" with some good and some bad results. It's good to know that someone else in this world has felt as I have before.

Product Description

Extensive studies have shown cognitive-behavioral therapy to be highly effective in treating anxiety disorders, improving patients’ social functioning, job performance, and quality of life. Yet every CBT clinician faces some amount of client resistance, whether in the form of “This won’t work”, “I’m too depressed”, or even “You can’t make me!” Avoiding Treatment Failures in the Anxiety Disorders analyzes the challenges presented by non-compliance, and provides disorder- and population-specific guidance in addressing the impasses and removing the obstacles that derail therapy. Making use of extensive clinical expertise and current empirical findings, expert contributors offer cutting-edge understanding of the causes of treatment complications—and innovative strategies for their resolution—in key areas, including:

  • The therapeutic alliance
  • The full range of anxiety disorders (i.e., panic, PTSD, GAD)
  • Comorbidity issues (i.e., depression, personality disorders, eating disorders, substance abuse, and chronic medical illness)
  • Combined CBT/pharmacological treatment
  • Ethnic, cultural, and religious factors
  • Issues specific to children and adolescents.

Both comprehensive, and accessible, Avoiding Treatment Failures in the Anxiety Disorders will be welcomed by new and seasoned clinicians alike. The window it opens onto this class of disorders, plus the insights into how and why this treatment works, will also be of interest to those involved in clinical research.
