Garbage "Science"
These quacks give ridiculous explanations and "treatment" for what they call "medically unexplained" symptoms and somatization. The only problem is that they are medically explained. For example there are approximately 4,000 articles in peer reviewed medical journals showing frank physical pathology (disease) in ME (aka CFS).

So not worth the read
Since most people who write soma books don't actually suffer from Soma disorders, taking what they say to heart can be difficult. Lucky for you, you've got a real live sufferer right here telling you it's not worth the read. When I was diagnosed with soma two years ago, my life flipped upside down. I went from being a promising, happy-go-luck college student to a depressed alcoholic on the verge of breakdown. I lost every friend I had, lived in constant pain, and prayed for the end. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (or CBT) was my first avenue of choice for treatment, and unfortunatly, it was also the least effective. I don't fault the author for his one sided CBT approach, but the fact that SOMA has general prognosis of "very poor", coupled with a life expectancy of about 35 for sufferers, makes it almost pointless to read up on and explore. Let's just be honest, if you've got Soma, you probably won't live very long. It's not because the disorder kills you, no, it's sicker than that. Your lifestyle escape will do you in; the alcohol abuse, the drug abuse, the suicide, these are all norms for people with Soma. You don't live, you exist, and those who don't actually suffer are rarely qualified to write books or distribute information. AVOID this and all other Soma books UNLESS THEY ARE WRITTEN BY SOMEONE WITH SOMA!!!

Required Reading
This is a great book that gives a nice, research-based approach to the treatment of Somatization in patients in primary care. However, due to the nature of the book, it is very much based on a one-sided approach (CBT) and provides limited information on other methods of treatment. ... Read more

Laughable
Quack Gregory Lamberty outlines somatization disorders and "medically unexplained" symptoms. The only problem is that they are medically explained. For example there are approximately 4,000 articles in peer reviewed medical journals showing frank physical pathology (disease) in ME (aka CFS).The same can be said for fibromyalgia and IBS.
If you doubt ME is a somatic illness read the fascinating Osler's Web: Inside the Labyrinth of the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Epidemic

Applying it to School Practice
I'm a speech pathologist who works with teens with Asperger's Syndrome in a public school.We see a lot of somaticization in our students, and it is often used as a way to escape less preferred activities.I and the other teachers need to know how to view this condition and how to set limits around the behaviors we see, *without* causing harm or ignoring what could be a serious condition.Lamberty's book helps us with that.He explains how somaticization is defined and how it manifests itself.He gives an excellent explanation of the kinds of treatment that have been shown to work.This is particularly helpful, because it teaches us the "active ingredients" in any successful therapy.That means we can incorporate those active ingredients in our own relationships with our students.Finally, Lamberty's books contains short clinical vignettes about actual patients, which is very instructive because it shows how to set appropriate limits. ... This book provides and excellent explanation of illnesses that are difficult to define as well as classify. A must read for anyone interested in psychosomatics

Nothing new here, just the recitation of the centuries-old mantra that any illness that medical doctors don't know everything about is automatically a psychiatric disorder.

Older theories of "bad" air and "evil spirits" as causative agents of disease have given way to more modern theories of "mass hysteria" spread by the media and Internet.

Parkinson's, diabetes, MS, ulcers and polio have all been declared mental disorders at some point. Children with polio were once beaten for their "behavioral" refusal to move.

As a woman, I found reading Dr. Manu's book akin to reading a first-hand account of childbirth written by a man who has never given birth in his life. Observations: yes. Speculative conclusions: oh yes. Irrelevant "facts": yes.

As a fairytale icon to "can you believe they used to think that," Manu's book is a gem worthy of a smile or two.

Readers expecting current biological research will be disappointed.

Like many people who do not wish to have their theories disproven, Dr. Manu completely ignores the decades-old World Health Organization listing of chronic fatigue syndrome under neurological disorders (ICD 10 G93.3) and fibromyalgia under rheumatological soft tissue disorders - M79.0. Good grief, even health insurance giant Blue Cross/Blue Shield lists them as organic disorders.

As has been the case throughout medical history, the advancement of imperfect knowledge lies in exacting scientific study not the repetition of myth. Doctors don't know what causes cancer, multiple sclerosis, or migraines, but the lack of knowledge doesn't mean "imaginary." The rationale that nothing further can be learned about organic illness is laughable in the current age of scientific advancements. Medical doctors can and should do better than trying to talk patients out of organic illness.

I really enjoyed this book. It is not just for professionals. This book will appeal to anyone who wants to understand more about illnesses like CFS, IBS and fibromyalgia which are incredibly common. Johnson has gathered the research from many different fields and really pulled it into a coherent picture. Beyond Mind-Body Medicine
I'm proud to be the first to review Brian Bloom's book for Amazon.com.I met Brian in New Zealand at a conference sponsored by the Mind-Body Trust.I was excited by his presentation and expected the book to be equally enticing.I was not disappointed.Within medicine, a number of us are puzzling over how disease develops and how healing occurs.This puzzling is outside of the conventional biomedical paradigm which renders all by genetics as random events with which we should not be concerned.Brian's book helped me to see how the language that we use about our illness arises from our bodies.Language is not just a mental phenomenon but is produced through out bodies which speak the lanugage of metaphor.The language we use is no accident and provides clues for our understanding of the life events associated with illness.The concepts are hard to quickly describe, for we are used to separating mind, body, spirit, life into different categories.Brian teaches us to appreciate the absence of separation and to contemplate a unified mindbodyspirit that is embedded in a social world.I am very grateful to Brian for his insights and recommend this book most highly to anyone interested in narrative medicine or the mind-body-spirit relationship. ... Abnormal Illness Behaviour - A new perspective.
Issy Pilowsky has introduced a concept which provides a new approach to the diagnosis and management of conditions such as hypochondriasis,'hysteria' and somatoform pain disorder. He also describesand discusses abnormal denial of illness. Since its first appearance in1969 this concept has generated fruitful research and improvedunderstanding of a complex and controversial cluster of conditions, whichoccupy a borderland area between psychiatry and general medicine.
