I LOVE! LOVE! LOVE the Dr. Hippo series of books! They are a must have for any parent or those who care for young children.

I found the parent information section in the back pocket a must have. I learn a lot about everyday ailments that I never knew before.

I love these books!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great Dr. Hippo story
Reviewed by Cayden (age 3-1/2) and Max (age 20-months) Aures and Mom for Reader Views (5/08)

"Sadie's Sore Throat" begins with Sadie the giraffe beading necklaces for the school fair. When she doesn't finish her snack her mother is concerned that she may be sick.Sadie tells her mom that it hurts to swallow and that her stomach hurts. Her mom takes her to see Dr. Hippo who determines that she has strep throat and puts her on antibiotics. She gets better just in time for the fair.

Cayden:"Why does she have a tummy ache?"
Max:"Sick!"

Cayden:"Why does she take her temperature in her mouth? We take ours in our ear."

Cayden:"I've never heard of purple polka dot popsicles before!"

Cayden:"Why doesn't she want to go to the doctor?"
Max:"Go!"

Cayden:"Why would they see butterflies in her ears?"

Cayden:When they are reading another Dr. Hippo book in the waiting room:"We have that book too!!Look mom! It's the same one we have!"

Max:"Stickers!"
Cayden:"We get stickers at the doctor's office too Max."

Cayden:"Yum!I like ice cream!"

Cayden:"My favorite part of the book was when she was in the doctor's office and they were checking her ears, belly and throat. Her throat was the most important job of all for the doctor because it doesn't feel good and she couldn't swallow anything."

Parent's comments:

"Sadie's Sore Throat" is another great Dr. Hippo story. The illustrations are very colorful and full of lots of detail. The storyline is wonderful and is a great book to read to any child because they all end up at the doctor's office for one thing or another.

There is also a handy pull-out guide for parents at the end of the book that includes helpful tips such as signs to look for to determine if your child has a sore throat and when to call the doctor."Sadie's Sore Throat" is very entertaining and educational for both children and adults!

Product Description
Protect your child. Leading pediatric experts answer all your questions about reducing the risks of antibiotic overuse. "An important book for parents…the best source I have seen about the dangers of antibiotic resistance and the risks of antibiotic overuse." —Scott Dowell, M.D., M.P.H. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention "Finally, a book that discusses the problem of antibiotic overuse in a readable way, combining daily experiences in pediatric practice with scientific explanations." —S. Michael Marcy, M.D., American Academy of Pediatrics If your child has a cough, cold, ear infection, or sore throat, will antibiotics help? The answer may surprise you. Overuse of antibiotics has led to antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria, or "superbugs." Antibiotics are increasingly ineffective because they are often prescribed inappropriately to treat viral infections, such as colds, bronchitis, and sore throats. Natural supplements may offer more relief. Clearly organized and packed with vital information, Breaking the Antibiotic Habit covers all the key issues, including:

  • Distinguishing between strep throat and sore throat, sinus infection and the common cold, pneumonia and bronchitis, and ear infections and ear fluids
  • Helping children with viral infections feel better—without antibiotics
  • Getting the most from over-the-counter remedies and natural supplements—which are best for specific symptoms, and which to avoid altogether

4-0 out of 5 stars good information
i felt that the book was very informative with good information about how antibiotics are abused and how parents are mostlyto blame for it. it also givesideas on how to treat certains colds with other medicines and natural stuff too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Every New Parent!
Being a new parent, I was worried when my 9 month old had a high fever and a cough that lasted more than a day. The doctor told me to keep my child comfortable and monitor his symptoms. If he did not improve in a few days, I was to call back. I felt helpless. I had collected numerous books about babies and what to expect the first year: but none of these books had the information I wanted to know such as how do I comfort a coughing baby at night. Breaking the Antibiotic Habit is wonderful. I read it from cover to cover the day it arrived. Now I am more confident that I can take care of my child when he is sick. I know what to watch for and can communicate better with my child's pediatrician.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I just happened to glimpse this book at my local library and checked it out. What an informational storehouse! I am the parent of two small children, who just recently have been coming down with coughs, colds, earinfections. Nowhere in any of my "pediatrition handbooks" did Iget such an in depth understanding of common childhood problems and how andwhen antibiotics can help and when they can't. I wish I read this book lastwinter when I needed the information. I am buying this book and highlyreccomend it to all parents.Read it cover to cover!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for parents interested in using less antibiotics
I am a pediatrician and am extremely concerned about antibiotic overusage. This book will help all parents understand the risks and benefits of antibiotic use and give them a greater understanding of when antibioticsshould be prescribed for their children. Learn that it is alright to tellyour doctor that you'd rather not use medications if they are notabsolutely necessary. This book is well written, easy to understand, and amust read for parents. Makes a great gift as well for a new parent! Irecommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book should be given at every baby shower!!
Come on parents, admit it, which one of us hasn't left our child's pediatrician's office at least once, feeling a bit miffed and irritated that the doctor denied the need for antibiotics, when you were absolutelyconvinced that one was warranted.... If you raised your hand, then thisbook is a must read and will prove to be a valued addition to your homemedical library.

As a registered nurse in the pediatric and adultsettings for many years, I have seen first hand the devastating effects ofpatients infected with antibiotic resistant organisms. It is frighteningenough just to watch a patient try to recover from such an illness, letalone try to care for them when traditional therapies havefailed.

Unfortunately, the frequency and difficulty of treating thesetypes of patients have become an increasingly alarming scenario in today'sacute care facilities. We are long overdue in the rethinking of the wayantibiotics are currently prescribed in this country.

With their newbook, BREAKING THE ANTIBIOTIC HABIT A Parent's Guide to Coughs, Colds, EarInfections, and Sore Throats, Drs. Offit and Bell have successfullyprovided clear and interesting discussions about the necessity forprudentuse of antibiotic therapy for our children as well as the adult population. It also provides surprisingly simple and clear guidelines for caregiverswhose children display symptoms of coughs, colds, ear infections and sorethroats. It is a needed refresher course for experienced parents, andproves to be an important reference for all first time parents andgrand-parents.

Bravo! Drs. Offit and Bell, thank you for this timelyand important book! What an informative little page turner!! ... Read more

Product Description
Aaron Kunin believes that the part of yourself that you're most ashamed of is interesting and can be used as material for art. The poems of The Sore Throat, his second collection, come out of self-imposed semiotic limitation, yet manifest a fully inhabited psychological environment. Working with a limited vocabulary--200 words derived from a nervous habit of transcription--and with specific source texts--Ezra Pound's "Hugh Selwyn Mauberley" and Maurice Maeterlinck's play Pelleas et Melisande--Kunin takes hymn, epigram, ode, elegy, ballad, conversation, invective, confession, epitaph, inability, protest, love poem, (praise, valentine, aubade, seduction, defense of inconstancy), riddle, cosmogony, theodicy, vanity, and misplaced concreteness among his modes d'emploi. Combining rigorous formal procedure with a kind of automatic writing, The Sore Throat produces poems of unlikely, and heightened, sensitivity to nuances of feeling. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The verses themselves are brief, yet reverberate in the mind
The second collection by poet Aaron Kunin, The Sore Throat & Other Poems is a flowing compendium of expressive human emotion. The poems vary in format, but are unified in their first-person voice - sometimes filled with frustration, sometimes wistful, sometimes cutting straight to the heart of the human condition. The verses themselves are brief, yet reverberate in the mind. The Sore Throat & Other Poems is a collection that deserves to be read, pondered, and reread. "Laughter is a way of knowing / or a sing of knowing, a way / of saying that you know something // without saying what it is (you / think you know but it's not what you / think) about. Is it possible // that when I was talking about / laughter, I was, in fact, thinking / about - something else?"

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful Limitations
Aaron Kunin's, The Sore Throat uses a limited vocabulary of 200 words of less. While the obvious struggles of limited poetry would ordinarily be a pitfall, Kunin has turned them into resonance and meditation rather than simple repetition. This work explore the interrelations of language and intention. Kunin's poems examine both the meaning of words as communicators and the effects of words on the human psyche. Indeed, his strongest applications of his experimental limitation is in exploring how we use different words with each other in romantic relationships. His series of poemstitled "The Sore Throat" greatly rearranges common poetics of love and makes poetry much more honest to the facts of love in that it is not always perfect, and not always direct. The stark limitation is at first meditative and resonant but in some later poems it turns into a kind of "vamp" or sonorous repetition that often does little to enhance the poems that contain these. However, this handful of awkward stanzas does not completely destroy the poems overall, much of the meaning and impact is very clearly made and deeply felt. A very interesting look at the place of modern poetry, Kunin bears much resemblance in style to Ezra Pound ... Read more
