Product Description
Addressing the challenges of intercultural and interpreter-mediated speech pathology practice, this book explores the intricate relationship between culture and communicaiton before moving on to intercultural health care, including a detailed look at perceptions of illness and disability. Two chapters on intercultural speech pathology address the challenges of clinical practice, including culturally-focused assessment and management approaches. Interpreter-mediated speech pathology is covered in detail, including an overview of the process of interpreting, debate on professional versus untrained interpreters, discussion of pre-session briefing, a look at potential barriers to the interpretation process, and introduction to a collaborative partnership model for working with interpreters. The final chapter explores the author's thoughts on future directions in research and education in the field of intercultural and interpreter-mediated speech pathology.

The book provides a comprehensive and practical insight into intercultural and interpreter-mediated speech pathology. With its easy to read and practical content, it should be of significant use to undergraduate students and qualified speech-language pathologists new to multicultural/multilingual contexts. However, it would also be suitable for experienced clinicians who find themselves tackling the challenges of intercultural speech pathology every day. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Cleft Palate Speech is a decent textbook
I haven't read it all yet -- my semester just started. So far I know that this book does not hesitate regarding details. Some chapter sections read almost like an annotated bibliography describing studies in detail.I find it hard to figure out the main point at times, the take home message.Sometimes the section ends with a summary but sometimes it doesn't.When it presents conflicting evidence and doesn't summarize it, that bugs me.Basically though, this is a good textbook. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars For Every Speech Pathologist!
When I started school, my instructor made us buy the book for class. I am so very thankful she did because I have since placed tabs throughout the entire book. There are listings for formal tests, informal tests/screeners, and good examples for data sheets. I love this book and have seen many colleagues with this book as well. I would definitely suggest to speech pathologists at any level of your career to consider purchasing this book. Very helpful!

I gave it four stars just because it isn't the easiest textbook to read. The way the material is presented is very complex.

4-0 out of 5 stars all the problems of language and kids
Perhaps you can get an appreciation for the complexities of language, and why language makes us human, by seeing what happens when children have problems with it. Reed describes in detail the numerous types of learning disabilities that a teacher can face.

Some kids might have underdeveloped lexical accumulations, giving rise to a sparse vocabulary and diminished knowledge. They might fixate on literal meanings of some words. Other kids could possess poor word retrieval.

Of course, all difficulties with spoken languages invariably ripple through to problems with writing. The foundations of writing stem from those for speech. Various countermeasures are suggested; ie. remedial pedagogies that have been tried by researchers and educators. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The SLP Bible
This book is really the Bible for every SLP and especially for the one's who need a thorough review and a good preparation tool for the Praxis Exam.It actually gives you a sense of confidence.Worths each and every peny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Advanced Review
This book has been very helpful to me and has definitely helped me obtain a better grade in my class. I highly recommend this book and this seller.

5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent resource
I purchased this book to study for the Speech Language Pathology Praxis exam.I am a speech language pathologist with ten years of Canadian work experience. When we moved to Georgia, I had to write the Praxis exam in order to get my license to practice. This book was the only book I used to study for the exam.I felt that the book summarized the important information in each subject area very well. The information in each chapter was up to date as well. The practice exams on the CD that comes with the book were only somewhat helpful. The main criticism I have for the practice exams is that there is less text to read in the questions compared to the actual exam. When you write the Praxis, you will find that many of the questions require a lot of reading before you can answer the questions.I was really unprepared for this and, as a result, took the entire 2 hours to finish all the questions.I had no time to go back and check any answers.Still, I ended up with a score of 760.

1-0 out of 5 stars Never received it
I always order books from amazon and never have a problem. It has been over 1 month and I did not receive my book.I have been in touch with the seller and he is sending me a form for a full refund. Not happy. I contacted him about 3 wks into the order confirmation and he told me to give it the full month to arrive, although he claims it was shipped 2 days after the order.Makes no sense.Wont be ordering from this seller again.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good reference. Poor preparation.
If you're looking for accurate, concise practice Praxis tests this is NOT the book for you.

Bought this book because my prof told me it would help study for Praxis AND it came with a fancy CD with practice tests! The content is ok (a little wordy at times, vague at others).I'm taking the paper-based Praxis, and it took me a long time to figure out how to print the practice tests (without answers) so I could practice with a hard copy.

The CD program was not created or proofed well. Some answers were typed in wrong (e.g., 43.13% instead of 34.13%). It wasn't that big of a deal because I already knew the answer...but what other questions did they screw up on? Also, test 1 did not have the correct answers on the CD...I had to look them up one by one with the "book reference" chapter.

Overall, I'm pretty disappointed in this book with regards to the Praxis practice part. It is a good quick reference for the wide range of subjects in SLP scope of practice. Wouldn't buy it again. ... Read more

Product Description

Speech Science integrates scientific material on the acoustics, anatomy, and physiology of speech production and perception with state-of-the-art instrumental techniques used in clinical practice.

Each chapter presenting theoretical information is followed by a corresponding chapter on clinical application, demonstrating the connections between scientific theory and clinical management of communication disorders. To reinforce this link, case studies and questions in each clinical application chapter help students focus on how scientific principles are applied in clinical contexts.

Call-out notes, summary points, and review questions help students consolidate material for improved retention. Schematic illustrations enhance the text and demonstrate anatomical and functional relationships between structures. With this student- and instructor-friendly text, students will find theoretical information meaningful, less intimidating, and more easily accessible.

The Second Edition features two new chapters on neurology that present a comprehensive yet targeted discussion of neuroanatomy and neurophysiology relevant to speech production (Ch. 12) and examine current brain imaging techniques (Ch. 13). In each clinical application chapter, case studies and follow-up questions reinforce the link between science and clinical application.  Pedagogical aides such as call-out notes in the margins have been included in all chapters to underscore important concepts.  Plus, this edition comes packaged with a new DVD to accompany the text that provides visualizations of many important concepts, as well as self-test quizzes for students to evaluate their understanding of the material.

The book summarises research findings from a range of projects using a set of auditory and speech procedures designed for the psycholinguistic framework developed by Stackhouse and Wells (1997). These procedures have been used with children and adolescents with a range of difficulties associated with cleft lip and palate, dysarthria, dyspraxia, phonological impairment, Down syndrome, dyslexia, stammering, autism, semantic-pragmatic difficulties, general learning difficulties, and disadvantaged backgrounds. The procedures have also been used with normally developing children in the age range of 3-7 years. As a result, the book includes descriptions of typical performance on the procedures so that atypical can be identified more easily. In addition, as the materials were used in a longitudinal study of children’s speech and literacy development between the age of 4 and 7 years we can highlight which procedures will help in identifying children a) who are likely to persist with their speech difficulties and b) have associated literacy difficulties. ... Product Description

This textbook describes the approaches to phonology that are most relevant to communication disorders. It examines schools of thought in theoretical phonology, and their relevance to description, explanation and remediation in the clinical context.

A recurring theme throughout the book is the distinction between phonological theories that attempt elegant, parsimonious descriptions of phonological data, and those that attempt to provide a psycholinguistic model of speech production and perception.

This book introduces all the relevant areas of phonology to the students and practitioners of speech-language pathology and is a companion volume to the authors’ Phonetics for Communication Disorders.
