Product Description
It is vital to have knowledge of the neuroanatomical structures and functional neurological mechanisms, which are disrupted in neurogenic speech/language, disordered persons in order to understand the speech/language deficits themselves.

This book provides a comprehensive coverage of the neurological basis of both the clinically recognised forms of aphasia and the various motor speech disorders, in both children and adults. It also covers more recently recognised language disorders, such as Parkinsons and related diseases, right hemisphere damage, closed-head injury, dementia, etc.  This is a perfect text for practitioners who need to understand the integration of neuroanatomy and functional neurology with the practice of speech-language pathology. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and functional
This book is useful both to students and to practicing clinicians. It explores anatomy and pathology thoroughly and has detailed sections on almost any aquired neurologial communication disorder.

Unfortunatelythere are few diagrams in the book however those present are able toillustrate their point with such clarity that they will be referred toagain and again as teaching tools.

The text addresses each pathology in afunctional framework, enabling the reader to apply the information to realpeople. This is an admirable quality in a book which is designed to be usedby students and clinician.

This book, while useful as a student, continues to be useful long after training as it has a depth of detailwithin each section to satisfy the most experienced clinician. ... Read more

Product Description

This textbook describes the approaches to phonology that are most relevant to communication disorders. It examines schools of thought in theoretical phonology, and their relevance to description, explanation and remediation in the clinical context.

A recurring theme throughout the book is the distinction between phonological theories that attempt elegant, parsimonious descriptions of phonological data, and those that attempt to provide a psycholinguistic model of speech production and perception.

This book introduces all the relevant areas of phonology to the students and practitioners of speech-language pathology and is a companion volume to the authors’ Phonetics for Communication Disorders.

Editorial Review

Product Description
During the last years a significant number of papers, books, and monographs devoted to speech and language impairments in bilingual children have been published. Different aspects and questions have been approached and today we have a relatively good understanding of the specific characteristics of the speech and language difficulties potentially observed in bilingual and multilingual children. This interest has been significantly resulted from the potential developmental and educational consequences of bilingualism. Our understanding of the communication disorders in adult populations is notoriously more limited, even though over 50 percent of the adult population can speak at least another language in addition to his/her native language. That simply means that over 50 percent of the communication disorders observed in adults are bilingual speech and language disorders: bilingual aphasias, bilingual dementias, bilingual stuttering, etc. This book was written with the specific purpose of filling this gap. The major purpose of this book has been to integrate the state-of the-art on the different aspects of the communication disorders observed in adult bilinguals. The book is organised in such a way that an integrated perspective of bilingualism is presented: from the normal conditions to the pathology; from the clinical descriptions to the rehabilitation issues; from the biological factors to the cultural variables. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars a good start
i began reviewing for the praxis with this book.I like how the author prepares you for the format of questions but some questions weren't as helpful. There aren't explanations for many of the answers so with topics that are more controversial, it's easy to disagree with what the author said was a best answer. It's a little disconcerting when you wind up flipping through all your texts trying to understand why she's right or prove her wrong.you just want to know.I recommend the big blue book for short and sweet information.it's easy to pick out what you need to go backand study more in depth by using their review chapters and end of chapter questions.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just Okay
This book had some good aspects about it (practice questions, info about taking the test). However I don't feel like it prepared me at all to take the test, so quite frankly it wasn't worth the money.Your best bet is to review a little bit of everything you learned in grad school & if your program prepared you enough you'll pass. Good luck

2-0 out of 5 stars Almost...but not quite
While this book addresses all of the cognitive processes needed to take the test, as well as the types of questions the Praxis test MAY have, I found the typographical errors and editing oversights to be distracting. Particularly frustrating examples of this occurred in answer key to the sample test. As I was reviewing, I found that the explanations of some correct answers did not correspond with the letter given as correct. It made me question how many of the others that I did NOT scrutinize, had the same problem. While the book provides insight into the construction of the Praxis test itself, which was helpful, in the end, I did not feel that it boosted my confidence in my preparedness in any way. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Student Perspective on text
I am seeking a dual certification in Special Education/General Education with a Middle School Endorsement in Science and Social Studies. This text is one of the better ones I have seen-The information is first and foremost arranged in a brain friendly manner. The companion website is VERY helpful. I have been using the powerpoints on the companion website to help guide my reading and I print them out in the outline format.
This way I can pick out the main ideas in each chapter and unit and they act as a study guide. i like the flashcard and memory games that are also available. The quizzes are awesome, because the questions are always different. My first Unit Exam is Tuesday, so we'll see if these study methods/practices are working-however I actually feel pretty confident-there are a lot of vocabulary words, but the text does a great job of not using an overwhelming amount of professional jargon-I will be keeping this text to add to my professional resource library. I would recommend this text for any educator who is learning about the Response to Intervention Process as well as general and special educators-pre-service and practicing. It helps identify the physiological and psychological etiologies of speech and language development and provides typical developmental milestones in a progressive and systematic deliniation. THANK YOU, Dr. Fogel for bringing the knowledge language of the IEP and SLPs to a level that we can all understand! A must read! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for APD
I am not all the way through the book but it gives some enlightening information about all the possible things that could be going wrong in your childs brain with auditory processing.

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter's problem wasn't ADD it was APD
There is little out there on Auditory Processing Disorder--- this book was really helpful in giving an overview of the problem, plus substantial info on specific hearing problems. After years of trying to figure out my daughter's school/behavioral problems, this book was a huge blessing. Turns out her problem was her hearing all along--- she couldn't process the sounds she was hearing efficiently, so she missed a lot in school and at home. The result was one frustrated kid who felt bad about herself. Now I can get her the help she actually needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
I first checked this book out of the library.Once I read it, I knew I needed to have my own copy to use as a reference tool.Although the book is a narrative, it provides good insight into the struggles of finding an accurate diagnosis. It also is a good reminder to listen to your instincts.

Great resource for Speech-Language Pathologists, too.Increasing numbers of children are being diagnosed with auditory processing disorders. It is often overlooked as a possible factor for poor performance in the classroom.
