Product Description

The evolution of technology has made new surgical techniques available for the treatment of diseases associated with the spina bifida malformation, and this is especially true in hydrocephalus and fetal surgery. The progress in this last field and in prenatal diagnosis have raised the significant problem of the effectiveness and usefulness of in utero surgical treatment of the malformation, that are extensively discussed in this volume. Also the clinical situations that can be seen in adolescents or young adults with spina bifida, including sexuality and pregnancy, are highlighted. Aim of this book is to promote a multidisciplinary approach to spina bifida, providing the three main specialists’ categories involved - neurosurgeons, orthopaedic surgeons, and urologists - with an updated overview of surgical approaches and with a concise reference that explains the main clinical problems to be faced in everyday clinical practice.

Read more

Excerpt:Aaron Fotheringham Aaron Fotheringham (born November 8, 1991 in Las Vegas, Nevada ) is an Extreme wheelchair athlete who performs tricks adapted from skateboarding and BMX . Fotheringham calls his racing style hardcore sitting . He claims to be the first person to successfully perform a back flip in a wheelchair at the age of 14. He performs other tricks in his wheelchair including a 180 degree 'aerial'. He plans to fuse the back flip with the 180 aerial into what is known as a flair . Aaron Fotheringham performing the backflip Fotheringham has Spina Bifida ; he has used a wheelchair since the age of three and although he used crutches early on, he has been in a wheelchair fulltime since the age of eight. He would watch his brother riding his BMX at the skate park and one day his brother told him that he should try riding his chair in the park. Aaron later noted that "I did, and I was hooked" . Fotheringham got a new wheelchair, a Colours In Motion's Boing!" which was both lightweight and featured four wheel suspension. This enabled him to perform the same sorts of tricks that skateboarders and BMXers can do as the suspension cushioned his landings. Aaron has further worked with Colours Wheelchairs to help refine their designs in real-world situations, and has been given a custom-made chair that is in his words pretty much indestructible He now competes in the Vegas Am Jam series in skate park competitions usually competing against BMX riders. He placed fourth in the intermediate BMX division in a competition held at Sunny Springs Skate Pa... ... Read more

Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Gastroschisis (also called paraomphalocele, laparoschisis, abdominoschisis, or abdominal hernia) is a type of inherited congenital abdominal wall defect in which the intestines and sometimes other organs develop outside the fetal abdomen through an opening in the abdominal wall. It is believed that this defect is the result of obstruction of the omphalomesenteric vessels during development. It is often detected through AFP screening or a detailed fetal ultrasound. Omphalocele is a similar birth defect, but it involves the umbilical cord, and the organs remain enclosed in visceral peritoneum. At least five hypotheses have been proposed: The first hypothesis does not explain why the mesoderm defect would occur in such a specific small area. The second hypothesis does not explain the low percentage of associated anormality compared with omphalocele. The third hypothesis was criticized due to no vascular supplement of anterior abdominal wall by umbilical vein. The fourth hypothesis was commonly accepted, but it was later shown that the right vitelline artery (right omphalomesenteric artery) did not supply the anterior abdominal wall in this area (Curry et al., 2006). More evidence is needed to support the fifth hypothesis. Gastroschisis as a stand-alone congenital defect is usually inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. It may begin as a sporadic mutation, can be associated with non-genetic congenital disorders, but has also been observed to be autosomal dominant. Gastroschisis has an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance.Genetic counseling and further genetic testing, such as amnio...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... Read more
