PCOS
When I finished reading What to Do When the Doctor Says It's PCOSI felt much more informed about PCOS, what it means to have PCOS, the symptoms of PCOS, and what I can do to help the symptoms of PCOS, including weight gain.It helped me understand what is wrong with my body and I even learned a bit about how my thyroid interacts with my PCOS.I also learned that many people with PCOS can go on to become diabetic and what I can do to avoid this happening to me.I give this 5 stars because it is well written, laid out nicely, and very informative.

Great overview of PCOS practical advice.
I wish I had this book when I was first diagnosed with PCOS.This book introduces many different aspects of PCOS evaluation and treatment options in language that the patient can understand.

Good overall read, something you should invest in when you find out you have PCOS.
I sure didn't know what to read when I was diagnosed.There are a wealth of articles online if you do some basic researching.But I wanted hard copies of information.You know, stuff I could dog ear and highlight. :)This is one of the better books, so I recommend it.Especially if you're new to the idea of PCOS and don't know where to start.Good luck, ladies.

good explanations
If you've just been diagnosed with PCOS this book gives a lot of information and explanations to help you through the diagnosis

Deeply flawed, but a decent basic overview
Considering that this was published in 2003 and written by a pair of non-specialists (a family practitioner as opposed to an endocrinologist and a how-to author who's written about topics from horses to decorating) it's a good overview of the topic. However the coverage of individual topics is superficial, the tone is dumbed down, and then there are a couple of flaws that really stick in my craw. The chapter covering how a normal period is supposed to work was one of the most reader-unfriendly descriptions I've ever read. It was disorganized, confusing and patronizing. Worse, the book harps in chapter after chapter about weight loss, implying shamelessly that obesity is a cause of PCOS and weight loss is a treatment for it. Filled with hope
I bought this book before reading any reviews on here, and frankly I wasn't surprised to find a handful of negative ones.I will admit that this was not an easy read, but at the same time it is the first thing regarding PCOS that has given me any hope at all.But I know plenty of people will be content with the more common explanation of it being all genetic and that we're not to blame.I certainly can't speak for everyone, but I know for myself, I have contributed to my current state.Having a doctor say that with appropriate behavior modification this syndrome can be healed, to me, this is a miracle.If you're not ready to take some responsibility, then there are plenty of other PCOS books out there that will keep you in your comfort zone, but if you're ready to do what it takes to take control of your body and your health, then read this book.You won't regret it.

Not so good if you have a weight problem - even worse if you don't.
IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A WEIGHT PROBLEM (including but not limited to diabetes, a tendency to higher insulin levels and overnourishment), this book is not for you. It basically states that eating well and keeping your insulin levels somewhat low will help your fertility. If you already do that, there is nothing else in there besides a biology lesson of how the female body works and medical/conventional alternatives for fertility treatments. What brings another point to mind: there is a lot of stress in this book on fertility/desire to get pregnant. Not so good if you are trying to live with PCOS and not even thinking about getting pregnant!!! Also, the book briefly mentions that stress may affect/cause PCOS, but the Author doesn't go deep into that - explanation of how this happens is lacking in comparison to the stress on overnourishment. I wish there was more information on the stress relation to PCOS! Last but not least: although the book stresses the relation between insuline level and PCOS, it doesn't touch the issue of what kind of exercise is better for lowering insulin levels: whether aerobic or muscle-toning exercises. So, in case you have high insulin levels and do need to lower it, would you buy a book that states that you should exercise but does not even mention what kind of exercise is better for you?

Very Informative
I have read a lot of information regarding PCOS.This book did an excellent job of explaining the complexities PCOS.It also addressed the treatment alternatives for infertility related to PCOS.I would recommend this book to anyone who has been recently diagnosed.

I highly recommend this book. It has a lot of pertinent information. I have PCOS, and this book talks about this syndrome in a way that makes you understand it easily. So many doctors focus on one problem, but this book shows how this one problem affects your whole body. I am so glad I purchased this book!

Healing Syndrome O: A Strategic Guide...
Although I have not been diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome, I have experienced dealing with issues of infertility.I think there is much to recommend this wonderful resource for any woman or couple interested in maximizing their fertility.I was very interested in the fact that you don't have to be overweight or show any of the more typical symptoms to be suffering from this metabolic imbalance, and that in fact, PCOS, or Syndrome O, as Dr. Feinberg calls it, is responsible for so many cases of unexplained infertility.I also thought the book was unique in offering as muchscientific explanation as it did.I appreciated being able to go into as much or as little detail as I wanted to on any of the covered topics, however, I found myself able to follow and understand more than Iever have in the past due to the author's clear explanationsand writing style. The motivational aspects of the book were not only very encouraging and empathetic to women, but empowering as well!That's never to suggest that there aren't women with intractable infertility issues - there are. I think the author is particularly sensitive in addressing that.I really loved this book and feel that it has made a difference in how I see myself in relationship to my body and health.I highly recommend it to anyone interested in starting a family or undergoing fertility treatments as well as the population of women who have or suspect they may have PCOS. ... Given that polycystic ovary syndrome is still shrouded in much uncertainty, it's a real shame that PCOS: A Woman's Guide to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is not a better book.

Coauthor Colette Harris, a British health magazine writer, was moved to write this book after her own successful battle with PCOS, a genetic hormonal imbalance that produces small ovarian cysts, acne, excess body hair, weight gain, mood swings, and infertility and raises the risk for miscarriage, diabetes, and heart disease. Her briefly told story is inspiring--how one woman surprised her doctor by managing this incurable disease using a combination of a vegan diet, herbs and nutritional supplements, filtered water, and exercise.

Unfortunately, even with the tales of other women dealing with PCOS woven throughout, Harris's insider perspective is not enough to carry the book. For women confused about their seemingly unrelated symptoms, PCOS may provide some comfort in relaying that their collection of symptoms not only has a name but a supportive patient community. Even so, apart from the theoretical discussions of what causes PCOS--the medical community is still debating this issue since not every woman with polycystic ovaries exhibits symptoms or even the same collection of symptoms--there's little here that couldn't be gleaned from dozens of other better-written wellness books. Indeed, most of Harris's recommendations for managing PCOS are so general--eat a healthy diet, manage your weight, try homeopathy, exercise, reduce stress--they could be (and in many cases are) the foundation for any number of wellness programs. Plus, authors Harris and gynecologist-nutritionist Adam Carey are given to straying so far off topic in some sections--note the discussion of why conventional farming practices deplete foods of nutrients--one wonders how (and when) they'll find their way back. My first book on PCOS
This was the first book I bought for PCOS so that I could understand a little more about it. I agree with some other reviewers that the tone is a little patronizing, and slightly condesending- but I don't feel like it's intentional at all. The book has a lot of good information.
It does hard on the holistic approach, and all-natural way of eating....I guess you have to expect some of idealistic fodder when you are reading a health related book. I felt disconnected from Harris- which is unfortunate considering she should have been able to bring it to a more personal level since Carey contributed for the medical portion. All in all- it's a good guide though- with a lot of information, a little harping, but for the good of understanding I could get past it to read on.

OK, not worth buying
If you have PCOS and have done any research on it at all, you probably will not find this book helpful.It mostly consists of "adjust your diet, get some exercise, and reduce your stress, and you won't need drugs."Well...what if you've done all that, and still have out-of-whack hormone levels and troublesome symptoms?Many women do need drugs to counter their PCOS, and this book does not cover the "what next?"It is particularly lacking in information on infertility, which is the biggest reason PCOS is a problem for many women, and the way they find out they have it.That said, it does cover some useful stuff about PCOS that could be informative for those just beginning their searches for information.But better to start with What to Do When the Doctor Says It's PCOS.

I found this book to be very informative, giving very specific details about the causes and symptoms of PCOS, while still being easy to read and understand. The authors offer many holistic (and common sense) approaches to getting the symptoms under control so as not to have to rely on medications, most of which have negative side-effects.

not a good source for infertility information
If you are looking for information on medical treatments and want to go beyond "the pill" this is not the book for you. I am infertile because of PCOS, and picked up this book looking for some sort of support. I should have looked elsewhere. Don't waste your money!

Don't Pay Any Attention to Other Reviewers
It never ceases to amaze me how people are so quick to assume that anything that strays from Western conventional medical wisdom must be bunk.Far too many of the reviewers make huge mistakes in their criticism of this text.Yes, I am sure that a reader will find some information lacking as is true with any literature produced on any topic.However, the criticism that this book is not helpful is one which could only be made by those individuals that are not familiar with the values of actually taking care of themselves.PCOS is a condition which results from poor self care, nutrition and fitness...period.Many of the reviewers that criticize this book, criticize it on the basis that they do not want to expend the time and energy to become healthy.They simply wish to pop a pill, which is toxic to their bodies in many respects, which will put a band aid over the problem.They do not realize that there endocrine system can be regulated through diet alone.They do not recognize that proper fitness will help to sensitize every cell of their body to use insulin more efficiently.They do not accept that actually eating organic foods which are not riddled with the chemicals, antibiotics, hormones and pesticides (which happen to act as hormones in the body) will do wonders for improving their health, simply because organic foods are more expensive or you might have to do some research into whether a cow was fed grass which is far superior to cattle which has dined on grain.

Anyone that ridicules this book for failing to deal with pill-popping has missed the point.Anyone that criticizes this text because it does not deal with controlling the endocrine system, does not understand the meaning and purpose of PCOS: A Woman's Gudie to Dealing with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.Anyone, who cannot glean the meaning of straying so far into the farming practices which have depleted nutrients from our foods making supplementation necessary does not have the ability to formulate a comprehensive body of knowledge about this disease.
