Product Description
Polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD) is a badly defined disease syndrome in which women usually have oligomenorrhoea and elevated plasma luteinizing hormone (LH) concentrations. The contributors to this book deal with the epidemiology of polycystic ovaries, their structure and function in the ovary and a range of treatments and their effects. Amongst these are insulin resistance and obesity, the effect on bone mass in polycystic ovarian syndrome, pregnancy loss and menstrual disorders, the effects of long-term administration of GnRH analogues, the effect of the combined use of GnRH analogues and pulsatile GnRH for ovulation induction, gonadotropin therapy response and assisted reproduction programmes. ... Product Description
A comprehensive Guidebook to treatment options and the latest medical advances for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) also known as Stein-Leventhal syndrome or functional ovarian hyperandrogenism, is a complex endocrine disorder associated with a long-term lack of ovulation (anovulation) and an excess of androgens (male hormones, e.g., testosterone).

The disorder is characterized by the formation of eight or more follicular cysts of 10 mm or smaller in the ovaries, a process related to the ovary's failure to release an egg (ovum). PCOS is one of the most frequent causes of infertility.

Symptoms may include various menstrual problems, hirsutism (excessive body or facial hair), endocrine abnormalities, acne, obesity, infertility, diabetes with insulin resistance or hyperinsulinemia. Even if specific symptoms are not causing an immediate problem, PCOS can have significant long-term effects, including diabetes, heart disease, and endometrial or breast cancer, so seeking treatment is critical.

PCOS treatment decisions depend on symptoms, age, whether or not the patient wants to become pregnant, and the degree of ovarian, adrenal and androgen excess. First line management includes diet modification, weight loss and stress reduction since obesity and stress can contribute to androgen excess. Other management and treatment approaches are directed at addressing specific symptoms (i.e. acne, excess hair growth, menstrual problems, infertility) and at preventing long-term complications, given that PCOS can begin in adolescence or earlier.

Some PCOS symptoms (acne, menstrual irregularity) may affect body image and self-esteem, and may be of concern, especially in adolescent girls. Education and support are important in helping young women cope with the physical and psychological aspects of PCOS.

4-0 out of 5 stars can i be your editor?
This book helped me greatly after my diagnosis, however there were a few spots in the book where I wanted to contact the author and ask if i could be his editor because of little mistakes. When writing a book, especially one medically....you have to have proper editing/proofreading because for some people, like me, that means credibility/trust.Nonetheless, still a great resource for me after discovering I had PCOS.Would like a newer edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!!
If you have been diagnosed with PCOS, this is the best book for you to learn from. I've been diagnosed for 3 years and although I have done lots of research, Dr. Thatcher makes it very easy to understand and explains everything out for you. You might find it overwhelming if you have not done any research at all and are just now learning.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is incredibily informative and easy to read
To all the sufferers of PCOS..this is one book you need to have on the shelf...it gives a wealth of information..while not going overboard with medical terminology.

It really explains whats may be the cause...and suggests solutions.

On a side note...and Im sure if youve gone to the specialist...theyve told you that weight loss helps...

Ive suffered with PCOS for the last 12 years...I made the commitment to get myself in the best shape I can...which for me meant running 5k 5 days a week- loosing weight and increasing muscle mass....only eating foods that are low glycemic and applying portion control..12 glasses of water and vitamins etc ...

And after years of suffering....my PCOS is gone...gone..healthy lifestyle and diet definitely wont be the cure for everyone...
But it will definitely work for some...

Dont give up....

2-0 out of 5 stars way over my head...but my OBGYN recomends it
this book, was well lets just say way over my head BUT.... my OBGYN suggested so I am sure if you are more dedicated than me you would enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars DR. THATCHER IS WONDERFUL...BOOK IS A MUST HAVE
I can tell you that this book is very helpful with anyone with PCOS. Dr. Thatcher is actually my doctor and he is wonderful. He is very educated in this field. He stays on top of the newest research and is a great doctor. I can not say enough good things about him. I would recommend this book for anyone who suffers this disease and if you have daughters that may end up with similar symptoms. This would be a wonderful reference guide to help know what to expect. He really helps give the patient a guide to help them understand this disease and to help be able to discuss these symptoms with their doctors to get quality medical care. ... Read more

This new publication provides an essential guide to the diagnosis of the syndrome, its etiology, pathology, and effective medical management. An important theme throughout the book is the role of PCO as a major cause of infertility, and the use of new assisted reproductive technologies to overcome this problem. Given the significant new developments in all these areas, this up-to-date account is the definitive guide to effective clinical practice in an area where consensus has previously been lacking. 3-0 out of 5 stars The title explains it all
it is hard to review these types of books...

it explained PCOS in many many ways only a few i could relate to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Conceived first baby after reading this!!!
I was diagnosed with PCOS while trying to conceive and this book was recommended to me by my reproductive endocrinologist. The author does a stellar job at breaking down exactly what PCOS does to your reproductive body and then gives step-by-step solutions to combat the diagnosis.
I was not an advocate of using fertility medications or IVF procedures (personal choice) so this book fit my lifestyle needs perfectly. After following the guidelines for two months (after not having an ovulatory cycle for three years) I was able to ovulate and conceive my baby boy who is now 8 months old!
I highly recommend this book to any woman suffering with PCOS.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Basic Info
Good information about PCOS, gives a general overview but doesn't give enough specific diet information for managing PCOS. Definitely recommend "New Glucose Revolution" for this.

5-0 out of 5 stars THANK YOU FOR THE GREAT BOOK!
SENDER WAS WONDERFUL, BOOK CAME RIGHT AWAY- TIMELY MANNER AND IN GOOD SHAPE!! THANK YOU

5-0 out of 5 stars I would recommend this book to anyone suffering with PCOS!

It is an EXTREMLY easy read and I found myself almost finishing the book in one night! I did not feel that this was written from one doctor to another but for REAL WOMEN who battle PCOS everyday. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars There are better books out there.
There are a number of books out there on PCOS which are chock full of useful information...this book was not one of them.I didn't find much here that wasn't already in a number of other books.

3-0 out of 5 stars I could do without the condemnations

I wish that some of the medical books with their condescending language, and holistic approach to fixing everything (i sadi everything....it can fizx some things but not all) could read their own advice and see if it makes since. Pg. 51 for example- trade soft drinks for fruit jucie. Pg. 52- trade fruit juice for vegetable juic....why didn't you just say so the first time.

Otherwise, I like this book. It has a lot of good info, broken down well. I just have issues with tone....like because you have an issue- it automatically means you are lazy....
Excersize chapter starts off by saying....well, you probably hoped I was not going to bring this up......Disgusting! A lot of PCOS women DO have fit bodies, and excersize regularaly. I could use with out the negative implications when I chose this book, so I am trying to make the right decision, and yet get punished by negative tone. It's what makes these books unattractive.
It even advises to be careful when walking or running alone at night....thanks for the free advice....
Considering that to know you have PCOS you have to be atlreast old enough to have a menstral cycle- well, the book is just written like she's talking to a 5 year old.
It's disappointing that there is good information mixed in with infuriating condemnations.
I am giving it a three - just because she does mention other alternatives, and she talks about Metformin- something missing from a lot of texts on PCOS.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hope
This book was what I was looking for. Written by someone who knows what I'm going through and it was filled with hope about fighting PCOS the right way. ... Read more
