infomative but not a practicl recovery option for many
very informative, but not everyone can spend so much money out of pocket to beat stroke. as a 40-year old survivor, i want to beat my sroke but there is a limit to our resources andworking husband is doing his best to keep up with my urrent schedule of appts.

Encouraging
I read thisrecently as a stroke survivor 4 months after my brain event. I found quite a lot of encouragement and helpful information packed into this book. The author focused on what can be done to recover, not what can be done to settle for a lesser recovery. The information presented gave me a calmer,more patient, and broader outlook on my recovery as a lifelong process.Not so big a change from life before my stroke. Life was about learning things,being challenged, and conquering obstacles, both physically and intellectually. It still is.

Strokes and recovery from them
Ms. Greene did a good job of emphasing the benefits of therapy following a stroke.Some of her treatments may be beyond the financial capability of many; but most were not.Her perservance and self-drive come through as key issues for anyone related to someone who has suffered a stroke.

Aw geez.
When the book came out, it sounded promising: a coming-of-age tale with sex as the means of self-discovery, told by a precocious, smart young woman.Nah, it's a cheap, trashy book along the lines of those found in the checkout line at the grocery store. It was soulless reading-- I didn't care about anyone on this book, much less the narrator. So, I made the best of it and skipped to the naughty parts, thinking the book could be salvaged as a cheap thrill.Problem is the author's crappy writing ruined it throughout.Ms. Parente is obviously enamored with herself and her self-perceived writing talent.She drowns in her own ego, and it shows in the writing. The problem is either she does not really have the talent to back up her ego, or her annoying self-involvement gets in the way of what could be good writing.I don't really care. After reading this, I just want back the time I invested in it.

Great if you can get beyond the "dirty" aspect...
I got this book at a book sale, and had I noticed when I picked it up that it was classified as "Erotica"...I wouldn't have purchased it. To each his own, but romance novels with ridiculous sex scenes are not my thing.

That said, this is not a romance novel with ridiculous sex scenes, nor do I think it should be classified as "Erotica". Yes, sex is a HUGE part of this book, but it is real-life sex, the kind that can build you up or break you down--and in this case, it's the kind that can break you down. It is difficult to understand how 100 Strokes... can be a fictionalized memoir written by a 17-year-old girl. I get the feeling that Melissa P. did actually experience much of what she wrote about, or else she wouldn't have been able to describe feelings--both physical and mental--in such vivid detail. Of course, Melissa P. is Italian and this book was originally published in Italy, so maybe teenagers over there are really that much more sexually active/knowledgeable than teenagers over here.

If you can stomach reading about sex--and a lot of it--I definitely say give this book a try. I'm rating it 4 out of 5 stars but I feel the need to repeat that there are a lot of sex scenes in this book, many of which were difficult for even me to get through. However, the author's insight and writing style are exceptional and I do feel that any open-minded young woman can learn a lot from this short yet poignant novel.

Can't Believe It's Real...
Depending on what you read, this is either an "actual" or "fictionalized" diary of a teenager's sexploits.My vote falls for "fictionalized", and highly fictionalized at that. It reads to me exactly like a teenager's FANTASY of what having all these sexual experiences would be like.

Badly written, this "author" needs more more experience before she publishes more books.If it weren't for the shock value of its subject, no one would ever read this.

Not Groundbreaking
I read this book while living in Italy, and when it came time to pack up, I simply threw it away to save space.I had seriously considered burning it publicly.It is my love of literature that compels me to do so.As a writer and a human, I have to say that the fact that this tripe is an international best seller is horrible.There are so many talented writers out there, fighting for publication, and yet the industry caters to shock value garbage like Melissa P.'s thinly veiled prepubescent diary as worthy of printing.Everyone over the age of 16 has been 16.We know all the angst.Just because this book involves a lot of sex doesn't make it erotica.It's a shame too because Mel P. does have a grasp of language and her metaphors are not bad.I'd consider reading something from her that was a polished work instead of her sodden journal entries.ps.Shock value in Italy= 10.Shock value in America=1.Teenage angst and self destruction in the name of "love" ain't nothin new.

Wish I had read this book sooner!
My husband is a 52 year old stroke survivor.I recently picked up this book at the local library and found it extremely informative.It's been 1 1/2 years since my husbands stroke and I only wish I had found it sooner!The book is very well organized with plenty of examples of patients experiencing various changes after stroke.A must read for anyone who knows (or is) a stroke survivor!

This well written book tells , in mostly plain language, just what happened, how bad it can be and how lucky you are to be as good as you are. Answers treatment questions and gives many good references.A must read for care givers.

unsatisfying
I hoped for insight, inspiration and guidance.I got some sursory information and no inspiration.This might be a good book for someone on the outside looking in.But if you are hoping for ways others have navigated this stressful time, this isn't it.If you are simply curious about different treatment approached and want to know what others have faced.Then, OK.But if you hope to learn how others have navigated these stormy waters and succeeded...this is very unsatisfying.Want to learn how to work together as a family?What you may need to do etc?forget it.

What the Family Needs to Know
Learn the basics of stroke care, and what to expect from the hospital and rehab.This helped me understand how stroke affects people differently (speech, paralysis, etc.).
After my brother suffered a stroke at 59, I've read a lot of titles on the topic.This book gives a compact overview of the causes, effects, and treatments.
To supplement a book like this, I recommend reading personal accounts of stroke survivors.Those helped me understand the situation from the viewpoint of someone who had experienced it.

Readable with lots of good information
In response to a family emergency, I ordered four books on stoke recovery. Two had been recommended to me as being helpful for lay people: (1) "Living With Stroke: A Guide For Families" (Senelick, Rossi & Dougherty, 1999) and (2) "Stoke and the Family: A New Guide" (Stein, 2004). I ordered these for my family members (and myself). Two more were written at a much more scholarly, technical level for clinicans: (3) "Recovery after Stroke" (Barnes, Dobkin, & Bogousslavsky, Eds, 2005), and (4) "Stroke Rehabilitation: A Function-Based Approach" (Gillen & Burkhardt, Eds, 2004).

Each of these books has much to recommend it.I hope to write reviews of all four; I've already written an Amazon review of "Living With Stroke".I can see why the first two are standouts, and have been helpful to so many people. They are well-written, concise books with plenty of important information. These books will help you quickly become an educated consumer of medical care. (They won't always familiarize you with medical controversies and choices, but they do a remarkable job of capturing the key issues. Controversies include, for instance, the use of anti-seizure meds, and the use of statins for cholesterol reduction, especially in women.Stein in particular is more likely to point out controversies, and he does point out side effects of medications, in various instances).

Stein's book is easy to read and has succeeded in packing in an enormous amount of information into a 272 page paperback.Unlike "Living With Stroke," it contains a number of illustrations and photos which are helpful in understanding the brain, setting up a safe home environtment, etc. It contains more (and sometimes different) information than "Living With Stroke."Toward the end, it does a nice job of discussing medical research and experimental treatments, but also makes readers aware of a wide variety of "nontraditional" treatments, such as acupuncture, herbs, and biofeedback.

The book's 20 chapters cover the following:What is a stroke?; Finding the Cause of a Stroke; Stroke prevention; How the Brain works; Medical Complications after Stroke, Recovery and Rehabilitation; Stroke in Young and Old; Impact on Marriage and Relationships; Impact on Children and Family; Return to Work and Leisure Activities; Weakness after Stroke; Loss of Sensation or Vision; Problems with Memory and Thinking; Emotional and Personality Changes; Communication Difficulties; Swallowing Difficulties; Pain and Muscle Spasms; Equipment and Home Environment; Nontraditional Treatments; Understanding Clinical Research.There is an extensive appendix on "resources and information"

I believe that many people will be able to complete the book in a two or three nights. That's important when time is of the essence and you are trying to educate yourself quickly.

If you are a family member and/or a caretaker: This is the book to bring with you to the hospital waiting room. Take this one, or the "Living With Stroke" book. You are likely to be waiting for long periods between visits with doctors and nurses, and you'll have many questions. You'll learn much more detailed general information from this book than the 10 minutes you spend consulting with the doc. What this book doesn't explain is how to deal with hospital staff who are busy and not always concerned with communicating with family members. But it provides plenty more. You can use this book to educate other family members and friends who might not be as thorough and bookish as you, and win them over to a sensible and realistic agenda.

If you are a professional, you may find this book helpful, for a variety of reasons. First off, you might consider recommending this book, or "Living with Stroke," to your patients. Stein's book contains more, and different, information than "Living With Stroke" (I recommend both).Moreover, you might use the language in these books to explain situations and decisions to patients and their families. The authors have taken care to discuss emotionally and cognitively complex material in a sensible and clear manner. ... Read more

Excellent stroke book!
Excellently written, really in-depth and personalized advice from Dr. Caplan. It feels as if you have a teacher just beside the book, and it reads like a novel. It has been an invaluable resource as I go through residency, definetely reccomended!

Easy read, not comprehensive
For a quick and easy read, this is a great book; however, it is not by any means comprehensive. In fact, for a more comprehensive review, I would recommend the J.P. Mohr book, the newest edition of which comes out January 2011. This books is geared more toward the non-vascular neurologist. For fellowship trained vascular neurologists, it is too general and doesn't offer much in the way of management.

The Best
If you enjoy drawings this is a must have. Some of the best work anywhere in a variety of styles. More than I expected.

A Strange Mix
This book contains some very accomplished work, but also a lot of really weak stuff such as you'd find in a how-to book for beginners. I can only assume they did not get a lot of quality entries from which to choose. If I had seen the book before ordering, I would not have bought it (and I got it used).

more like strokes of student drawings
What this book needs is some good editing. Cut out the student grade stuff and put in more work by some of the artists in the book who are truly skilled.

The cover is the by far the best drawing in the book and it's not even a drawing! It's done with oil washes and scumbles. If you are looking for work that looks like the "drawing" on the cover, this isn't the book to buy.

There are some very good drawings in the book (yes there are a some), but the majority of the drawings look like first year art student work, (at the beginning of the school year). Some of the drawings look like copies of snapshots with no thought to composition, design or taste.


Btw, this should have a rating of two stars, not five. Seems to be a bug in the site and I'm not getting the option to give a star rating and when I preview it incorrectly gives five stars. This is not worth five stars!

Unimpressed
Quality Printing, Appears to be a compendium of able, talented artists, who may well be geniuses. I would have to say of it that it's title promises much more than it actually does deliver. It's not a disgrace as such books go, Yet it's focus is more concerned with the promotion of its author, its publisher (North Light Books), other books, as well as, perhaps, The contributing Artists who sample images, and quoted comments are offered for causual examination. There are no revealations to be found here in my opinion. Yet again on the more optimistic side its language is not obstruse, and for the most part tends to be somewhat people friendly. It might make a reasonable gift for young and budding artists.

great book
I just got this today and I love it. Many beautiful artworks by a great many skilled artists. I draw too, but as a realist artist - one of the things I've often noticed in work in this genre is a loss of expression or life through too much detail. Not so here. This book covers everything from abstract to basic photo-realism, but the pictures overall really snap with expression and interest.

Great eye candy for a realist artist and a good reference source for trying new things and inspiration. Not a how-to book. But a good book for what it represents - especially as there are so few books on the market for general drawing reference.

Only gave it 4 stars because some of the pictures were still a bit junkyand I don't like nudes. - Playboy/paintbrush/camera, all the same thing, just different mediums/labels. (A paintbrush doesn't make porn cease to be porn. Neither does the word 'art'.)

But yeah, a book with some real gems in it. Wish the editor had done a whole series of these like the Splash books. ... Read more

Great fast paced read
Wow, I thought the first book was good, but this one blew it out of the water. It picks up right where the last one left off with Joanne trying to figure out her new Djinn powers. Even though David tries to hide it from her, Joanne quickly finds out there are consequences for him saving her. The leader of the djinns, Jonathan, gives her a week to learn how to support her own power or both David and her will lose their lives. Jonathan sends her to another djinn for training but a disturbance ethereal plane starts reeking havoc, leaving Joanne to try and save the day. Again.

We learned more about what djinns really are. I find their "ethereal" lack of true bodies to be interesting, as they are truly just pure energy. It takes conscious effort to take maintain human form, something Joanne really struggles with at first. Her battles with reforming without nudity make for some comedic scenes. Unfortunately, before she can really start to train herself, Joanne gets claimed by a human It was horrible for Joanne to see firsthand how helpless a bound djinn really is. When their master orders them to do something, they have no choice but to obey regardless of how horrific the order is. Luckily she uses her innate sassiness to her advantage to keep some semblance of control over her own actions.

There are plenty of twists and turns, (and some "untwists" of events from the first book), that just kept me on the edge of my seat. This definitely is a book you will wind up reading in one session as you will not be able to put it down. The ending was a cliffhanger leading right into the next book, and I can't wait to see how Joanne digs herself out of yet another mess.

It took a while to warm up to it.
Unlike the previous book, which hit the road running, this one took some time to get into. How long? Too long. I was actually ready to give up on it when, by sheer luck, I read a little more while waiting for my daughter to fall asleep. Honestly, you can practically skip the first 40 pages and not have missed much (unless you really like a detailed account of how beautiful Joanne thinks David is). I have to wonder if a sequal could have been avoided if those first 40 plus pages were just a bit tighter. Still, all in all, I enjoyed the book and will definitely pick up the sequel. So Rachel Caine, you better not disappoint.

Another great one
One of the best reads in quite some time. I was completely on board with Jo's life as Djinn,and everything that surrounded it.Without giving too much away, I thought this was another skillfully crafted and intelligent book for the series.Not a dull moment, but definitely a start of some serious conflict & heartache for the protagonist and her HEA.

dear lovers of magical fiction,
... has become a djinn, sort of, and must deal with the consequences of this fact. This second of the Weather Warden series starts a bit slowly in our opinion, but is good when it gets going and is a satisfying reading experience. If you like the first in the series, you'll most probably like this second book and, like us, look to the third with hopeful expectation.

A Very Good Book on Dealing With Stokes, etc
Every stroke, aneurysm, traumatic brain injury is different which is one reason it is so tough to deal with recovery, especially with the "at home stage".My husband suffered a massive stroke with evolved to a crainectomy so I have gone thru years of being a caretaker.

what I loved this book is that so many of the suthor's situations and emotions were so "spot on".From being totally overwhelmed in the beginning that one is primarily reacting vs being pro active in dealing with the days after "the event", to learning how to take one day at a time or celebrating one small improvement, to evolving/figuring out a home treatment plan.The hard parts are coming up with ideas for home rehab because the survivor and caretaker are left on their own, and most important, for the caretaker not to get lost in the process.

It was well worth reading.

First off, I'm a caregiver to a stroke patient - my husband, who is 40, and is suffered from 2 massive strokes end of last year and still hospitalized.

The book basically is a testimony of how the author has helped her best friend to get back on her feet from the stroke.

This book is not only an enjoyable read(the author is extremely funny, sometimes, a laugh can help a lot in situation like this), but also offers many constructive ideas of how a caregiver can survive through this life's brutal episode. Yes, a caregiver needs to be well alive first, then to "give care". Because her/his well-being is all it counts when their loved one is struck from a brain trauma. And this book has taught us how.

After reading the book twice, I was really moved by their friendship described in the book. The author has done her best to bring her dear friend back to normal; If she can do that to her friend, there's no reason that I cannot do the same to my husband, and this thought has helped me survived till now.

Back to my husband, after 2 massive strokes and craniotomies and lying in the ICU for 2 weeks,he now can read the newspaper daily and feed himself with fork. Still can't he be able to talk yet, but we're so sure that my strong, funny and loving husband will come back soon.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs a confidence boost when taking care to a brain trauma patient, or simply wants an enjoyable read.

Warm and well described
This is a good book about the before, during and after of a drama like brain injuries. The author explains how lonely is the care-taker and how overwhelming is the task. I am in a similare situation as my husband had a stroke at the young age of 46 and I found support and understanding through the pages of this book.
All the aspects are approached like the difficulties, the fears, the financial aspects etc.... a well as the hope, the happiness related to each achievement, the ups and downs and the faith into a future, different from the past but still worth fighting for life.
A must read

Uplifting read, but very general
This was an enjoyable book to read (considering the topic), but it didn't offer much in the way of specifics for care giving or rehabilitation.Much of the book is dedicated to telling the author's story, and it also heavily references the 12 step program.Although I didn't get the specifics I was looking for, I did get a few ideas for additional research, such as eye exercises for regaining balance.Additionally, the book did provide me with a sense of hopeful optimism about my care giving situation.

I do not remember the excrutiating pain I was apparently in when I had my brain aneurysm. Nor do I recall my months of recovery in hospitals and the nursing home. But I am very grateful that my friend and caregiver never gave up on using her emotion-based approach to brain rehab. I typed the manuscript for Brain, Heal Thyself. I also proofread it. I believe all caregivers and stroke patients (who can read) SHOULD read Brain, Heal Thyself. This caregiving method saved my life. I give this book seven stars!

Excellent Collection of Materials & Exercises!
As a family member of a stroke survivor who is dealing with expressive Aphasia, I found this book to be extremely helpful.It is written in easily understandable language, and organized in an order that is simple to follow.Yet there is nothing lacking in terms of practical and useful materials and exercises that will aid in the recovery process.

Not only are oral speech and language abilities addressed, but also writing ability and reading comprehension.This text also includes materials that will aid in rebuilding skills related to money, math and telling time.Exercises are all provided in bold, large print... making them very easy for family members and patients to read and use.

The Greatest Miracle: A Changed Life
Who would have thought it? This is an autobiography by a fameous actor, who won more than one Lifetime Oscar, and a Jew, who didn't disclose his identity early on, but after a number of near-death experiences, not only returns to the God of his fathers, but commits to his second bar mitzvah. This in my book is a miracle!

Kirk Douglas' life turn-around not only chronicles his return to God, but his return to the stage, after suffering a debilitating stroke, leaving him void of speach. From near suicide to full recovery, this autobiography will pump courage into the discouraged to keep on pressing toward the goal.

In My Stroke of Luck, Douglas reveals that once he returned to the God of his fathers, he began to really care about others and, thereby, health and strength became his once more. An excellent testimony for all of us to heed.

Misleading.......
The book is about his journey of having a stroke. However, it is misleading as he is wealthy enough to have all the doctors, facilities, caregivers and medical assistance at his beckon call, right there in his own den.
Unlike those of us "common" people with limited insurance fighting just to get speech, trying to get a way to go to speech therapy, and fighting denials.Then daily/weekly chosing medication, co=pay over paying living expenses, food.
He truly has a stroke of luck in more ways than one.Does he even realize this?

Glad I read the book to know how the "real fighters" have to fight in this world,I do appreciate more what I have, but then I resent the fact he wrote some pennance of a book just because he survived astroke.I justwonder how tough he would have fared in the common man's world.
Maybe that is why God gave him more at his disposable because He knew Kirk could not survive a stroke without everything at his beckon call.
oh well, as if anyone is going to read this anyway.
All thru out this book I compared my brain injury to his stroke and it has been 3 years and I am still fighting insurance for therapy.....

He's Mellowed
A good story, but a short one (small pages, big print, double spacing).KD had a stroke at 80, and wrote about it three years afterward.He truly made a heroic effort to recover his speech, and went on to make two movies after his stroke.He animates his own life and that of others with humor and wrote this book particularly to inspire other stroke victims--he includes his own "Operator's Manual" of six rules at the end.He celebrated his second Bar Mitzvah at age 83 and is open in saying how the stroke helped the selfishness of his early years give way to a renewed and expanded spiritual foundation.He has a heart pacemaker, bad knees from a helicopter crash, and the sequelae of his stroke to deal with, so he talks frankly about his depression and preoccupation with death.But as his mother told him as she was dying, "Don't be afraid, it happens to everyone."

Illumination by luminaries
Carr and Shepherd are legitimate luminaries in the field of stroke rehabilitation and research. They were the first to dovetail modern motor learning with stroke recovery and rehabilitation. For those of us interested in stroke recovery and rehabilitation research, this book (dare I say it) is actually a page turner. Most books I read about stroke recovery and rehabilitation leave me scratching my head because I don't understand what the authors say, and when I do understand, it does not resonate. I've been involved in stroke specific rehabilitation research for a decade and I've co-authored many articles in peer-reviewed journals. So when I read something and it doesn't make sense to me I figure I don't understand it because it just plain doesn't make sense.

This book however not only provides great, incisive, clear and usable ideas for treatment of stroke survivors, it references it's suggestions as well. Much of the book is dedicated to individual exercises. And although this may be of paramount interest to therapists I was much more interested in the global insights available in this book. I found myself highlighting the heck out of much of this book. That's always a good sign.

Well written account of Bruschi's return from a life threatening stroke
Authors Bruschi and Holley have written an effective and moving account of the New England Patriot's return from a debilitating stroke.Involving and thoroughly honest, "Never Give Up" is enjoyable and a must read for NFL fans and those who have suffered stroke or have loved ones who have.

Tedy Bruschi: Inspirational Comeback Story
Being a lifelong fan of the New England Patriots it goes without saying that one of my favorite players has always been Tedy Bruschi. In the era of free agency when so many players switch teams, players that have been with the Patriots for a while become household names in my house.

While it may seem silly or odd for a grown man, I remember when I first heard Bru had a stroke. I sat down and watched a tape of the New England win over the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl, at times teary eyed believing that Bru had seen his last snap on the football field. I thought there was no way he was going to be able to come back from a stroke. I consoled myself saying at least he got to play in four Super Bowls and was sitting on three Super Bowl rings on a team many consider a dynasty. Some great players, like Dan Marino, never won one. But I digress. Suffice it to say I am biased in this review. I am unabashedly a New England Patriots fan and an even bigger fan of Tedy Bruschi than I was before his stroke, if that's even possible.

In this book Tedy tells his story the way he wants it told, unfiltered by the media. It's about his stroke, the emotionally draining and frightening experience of his recovery, and his difficult decision to come back and play professional football. It's not about the Xs and Os of the game or recounting a season, but there is plenty about football, the New England Patriots, and what it means to be a professional football player. This is a can't miss read for any football fan.

This book is extremely well organized. While it is mainly about his recovery and return to football you learn a little about his childhood and growing up in a not quite impoverished, not quite middle-class, broken family in San Francisco. You learn a lot more about his home life and his wife and children and what it was like for them as he recovered from the stroke. And you learn a lot about what his teammates, the Patriots organization, and winning means to him.

Some of the highlights of the book include his impatience with his recovery and a bit of fear at ever regaining his vision and motor skills. It was clearly a tough road back. But the most revealing part of the book was his return to football. I was a fan who was totally jacked up that Bru was returning to the field and assumed that he and the Patriots organization did due diligence to ensure that there was no danger to him before taking the field. But one can never really know what an emotionally gut wrenching decision this was for his family, particularly his wife. Nor did I realize to just what lengths not only he, but his wife and Robert Kraft, went to to make sure it was the right decision.

He got multiple opinions from different doctors, not only at the insistence of his wife but the Patriots as well. Of course his wife didn't want him debilitated on the football field because she loves him. And the Patriots didn't either, and I'm sure they had his best interests in mind.But let's face it, the liability and bad publicity for the team that would have ensued had something bad happened would have been a severely damaging blow to the entire organization.

And while I followed some of the negative press about Tedy's return, I should have realized how that got to him and I never really knew that New England fans thought he was crazy and he got negative responses from Patriots fans as well.He tells, in great detail, just what an emotional, difficult road it was to get back on the football field.

I have screamed "Bru, Bru, Bru, Bru, Bru" in front of my television many, many times, but never so loud as I did when he returned to the field against the Buffalo Bills on a Sunday night in October 2005.

But the bottom line is that Tedy returned to football because he is a football player and that is what he does and it was clear from his doctors that he was in no significant danger. He also returned and felt pressure to perform well to be an inspiration to other stroke victims - not that everyone can necessarily fully recover from a stroke - some aren't as lucky as Tedy. But as Tedy puts it, for stroke victims, "who they are now, not what they were or hoped to be, is okay" using the words of Trisha Meili, the Central Park Jogger who was brutally raped, beaten and left for dead, and is one of his inspirations.

For Bru it could have been "who I am now, a devoted father and family man working in the front of office of the New England Patriots but not a football player, not what I was or hoped to be, a football player fighting to win a fourth Super Bowl, is okay." Bruschi realizes he was lucky in his recovery and sends out a message of hope, for those who aren't so lucky, to fight through, saying "what you make of your life afterward" despite any impairments you suffer from, is what matters.

Tedy also talks about football and how much winning means to him. Getting back to normal for him was to not think about his stroke anymore but just go out and do his best to help his team win games. His coming full circle was not having the media or fans have a pity party for him. One of the best stories he relays in the book was several games after his comeback and after coach Bill Belichick lost his father, the coach said:

"You know what I'm tired of? I'm tired of all the feel good stories about the Patriots. Bruschi is part of it, and I guess I'm part of it too. Do you know what would be a great feel good story? If we go out on Sunday and beat the Jets."

For the Patriots, and Tedy, that meant, "let's get back to normal," especially since they were, at least by the standards the Patriots as a team, struggling.

I could go on and on but I will end with two things. First, and least important, Tedy talks about how emotionally upset he was after the New England loss to Denver the year of his comeback, ending their two year run as Super Bowl champions and the chance to make history by winning three in a row. I'm glad he was upset because I was too. I was depressed, physically and mentally, for a week. I know it's silly but luckily I have friends who are PATS fans who are the same way. I always tell myself I shouldn't be upset because the players just go and cash their fat paychecks and don't really care one way or the other. It's good to know that it's not true all the time.

Second, and more importantly, a big reason Bru wrote this book was to educate people about strokes, especially their early symptoms so they can be caught as soon as possible and do the least damage, and to provide some inspiration for people who have suffered from strokes.

Having retired and taking an oil painting class that is primarily landscapes, this book has helped me understand the painting process a great deal.

Disappointed in sequel to Brushwork Essentials
Mark's first book, Brushwork Essential is a very informative, instructional book on painting, covering a lot more than just knowledge on brushes. I love his realistic style of painting and was hoping for more insight on how to create such lovely work.Bold Strokes takes a completely different approach to painting, but uses much of the same stuff that was in the first book about loading brushes and the brand of paint he prefers.
I found this book was filled with large and full page photos and a lot less text. Also many of the pages have large blank areas, making it a quick read.
To me this style of painting with it's globs and smears of paint is too unfinished and amateurish looking. The exercises give brief instruction with each photo to get you to try the various techniques and strokes, but the colors are awful.

Bold, beautiful COLOR!!!

New to oils, I got a good education first and foremost, and being no stranger to art, I adapted immediately to all the techniques explained!This book is a gem for those who love COLOR! I learn swimming from The Total Immersion way(I bought books and DVDs and I was impressed.)I learned that all streamline, body rotaion etc....but I don't know the strokes well. Then I went to library to borrow this book.It helped me a lots.Basiclly the author's concept is pretty match to the TI way and he gave more details on the drills.Anyway, I like this book very much.So I bought the book and fellow the drills for my every day swimming.

This book herlped me in teaching swimming lessons and being a swim team coach.

A great beginning swimming book
I was looking for a book for me to use to help teach my kids (5&7) to swim the various strokes.This book is absolutely perfect.It breaks down each stroke into individual components and allows your child to practice each portion before putting all the pieces together and swim the "real" stroke.I was trying for weeks to help my 7 year old with her breast stroke, then I got this book and saw a dramatic improvement in just one lesson.This book is perfect for a parent or a coach to help teach beginning swimmers how to correctly swim each stroke.

One piece of advice.Your child will never learn to swim well by doing lap after lap.They need specific instruction on how to execute each stroke, otherwise they will just reinforce bad habits.

One more thing, the other book I have is Total Immersion, which I think is great.However, you need a book like Guzman's to get the basics of each swimming stroke.I do some of the drills in TI, but I need Guzman too.Plus, TI only talks about freestyle.

Old fashioned
This books seems to be directed at beginning swimmers.It's too basic for more experienced swimmers.Addtionally, many of the drills seem a bit dated.I may be a little biased since I am an advocate of the the Total Immersion style of swimming.

As a teen, I started out wanting to make my moped go faster and thanks to old road racers in Atlanta at "Buzz's Psycle" repair/racing shop they convinced me to buy this book.I had been researching engine tech at the library in SAE and other papers but none of them had practical DIY "how-to" information.The book has simplified formulas and teaches the importance of measurements.Complete explanations of carb jetting & sizing.The chapters on Intake, Transfer, Ignition, an Exhaust systems explain all of the best ways to improve the engine from stock - with simple formulas so they work with all sizes of engine.Complete explanation and equations to make tuned expansion chambers for Motocross or Roadrace tuned power-bands.How to test your progress without a dyno, and how to read the clues you find when tearing down for a rebuild.How to measure your engine port timing and area ratios.
I know there are newer books about this subject, but any good ideas they contain surely came from this book years ago!
After much success making my MoPed pull *and* go 50MPH,In 1983 I joined W.E.R.A , the Western Eastern Roadracers Association to race in the 80cc Production Class (Kawasiki AR-80's).The reason I won is mostly because of the rule-legal ways I made my bike faster because of this book - NOT because I was the best (nor the lightest!) rider!My AR-80 had the best running engine thanks to the science in this book and some elbow grease.

This book worked for me.
Back in 1983, my 8 year old son had a flat-track racing PW50 Zinger by Yamaha.I used Jenning book to guide me. This PW50 turned out to be the fastest 50cc bike in the nation. My son was clocked at 55 MPH at the National 1/2 mile in LIma, Ohio. It was turning over 14,000 RPM. I remember Jennings insisting flow in must equal flow out and make it as 'flowable' as possible.So a little porting and polishing. I used a 15mm carb in favor of the stock 12mm. (Other bikes we raced against were using up to 25mm, but actually didn't need all that in as it all couldn't get out and through anyway.The reeds were as flexible as possible and were to be as 'non-existant' as possible at that RPM. ALso match the pipe cones to that desired RPM. I still got the book( or now my son has it )as a mechanical engineer.Maybe he'll get those CAT engines to revlike that little PWsomeday!

In Respect of a Great Tuner
This book was very instrumental in allowing me to achieve some of the accomplishments and rewards that I have earned to date.This man put into one book the knowledge of the universe as it related to the field that he wrote about.My closest friend had the oportunity to work with him on a project and the knowledge that Mr. Jennings shared has been shared with many others in this book.The book has been treated by us like a bible for the two stroke engine.No other book or other single source of information has existed that has embodied so many practical formulas and actual information that allows one to construct systems and redesign engines. Much regrets that furthers writings on two-stroke engines from Mr. Jennings have not been published.

Two-Stroke theory and port area diagrams
The Jennings book is a simple masterpiece. He has taken some research that was done and published by Nagao, all to do with inlet tract delivery ratios, and without emphasising it he introduced the idea of port time areas. I am not sure if Nagao really understood the value of that idea, and it was a gem. Jennings read it and understood the value. He did his own investigation, and turned a minor suggestion into a real tool. This book is about the single idea of how to use port time-area diagrams. The other material in the book is good filler, but without port time-area diagrams I doubt the Jennings would ever have written this book. Written in 1973, and way ahead of its time, this is a must have book. This book really puts some method in to your tuning madness, just wonderful. Get it if you can!

Helpful book for grandkids
This book is geared to school age children and younger. It is a sweet story about a boy and his grandpa. It definitely deals with realities of a stroke and how it affects a family. My husband had a major stroke and we have 3 and 5 year old grandchildren. It was a perfect story for them and there are helpful hints on pages in the back of the book that guide you in what to say to your kids. I would highly recommend this book. ... Read more

The Scott Motorcycle
A well written and informative history, particularly of the early days of this marque, and its founder, Alfred Scott, which I found interesting because I knew little of this period. The Scott motorcycle is inevitably a minority interest, but technically interesting as the book makes clear that some of the features of the contemporary two-stroke motorcycle were invented by Alfred Scott and produced in 1908, i.e. the telescopic front fork, often attributed to BMW in the 1930's.The author makes the book eminently readable, and the period photographs are wonderful. I have a particular interest as I grew up about 6 miles from where the factory used to be, and have spectated at the Scott Trial in November in the rain in North Yorkshire, fortunately close to a pub called "The Green Dragon" in the village of Reeth, in Swaledale, where a warm meal could be had. However, I think that this book will appeal to any motorcycle enthusiast who has an interest in how we got to where we are today, and where some of the ideas developed so well by present day manufacturers came from. ...
