Product Description

This eloquently simple text provides a “cutting edge” philosophy for those dealing with the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and aftercare of individuals suffering from issues with chemical dependency. Diagnosis and Treatment of Substance Abuse follows the D.E.C.L.A.R.E model of treatment—a model in which each letter represents one of the seven bio-psychosocial modalities, or points of entry, for viewing the problems of a dependent client. This model takes the student through every phase of the acronym, which employs a therapeutic approach aimed at facilitating the improvement of drug-abusing behavior.

Throughout the text, the student is provided with helpful suggestions regarding treatment impasses, assessing strengths and weaknesses, developing a treatment plan and prioritizing intervention strategies. Transcripts from actual sessions and case vignettes provide rich clinical material to the text. Also, the student/clinician is provided with actual clinical instruments, not seen in other books, to conduct assessment evaluations of clients.

CONVENIENT SUPPLEMENT FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE OR INTERNSHIP USE WITH CLIENTS AVAILABLE!3-hole punched clinical Assessment Instruments booklets are available separately (in bundles of 10) to conduct assessment evaluations of clients.

Description:
The study assessed the predictor variables of attrition from a day treatment for adolescents with substance-related disorders. The adolescents who were living in housing services and had more delinquent behaviors presented more difficulties to adhere, to attend regularly, and to maintain a link with the day program. The presence of cocaine among the substance-related disorders predicted an irregular attendance. Conversely, the adolescents with more self-reported symptoms of anxious and depression revealed a better initial adherence, a more regular attendance, and a longer length of the treatment. ... Excerpt: Alcoholism, also known as alcohol dependence, is a disabling addictive disorder. It is characterized by compulsive and uncontrolled consumption of alcohol despite its negative effects on the drinker's health and social standing. Similar to other drug addictions, alcoholism is medically defined as a treatable disease. The term 'alcoholism' is a widely used term, first coined in 1849 by Magnus Huss, but in medicine was replaced in by 'alcohol abuse' and 'alcohol dependence' in the 1980s DSM III. Similarly in 1979 an expert World Health Organisation committee disfavoured the use of 'alcoholism' as a diagnostic entity, preferring the category of "alcohol dependence syndrome". In the 19th and early 20th centuries, alcohol dependence was called dipsomania, before the term alcoholism replaced it. The biological mechanisms underpinning alcoholism are uncertain, however, risk factors include social environment, stress, mental health, genetic predisposition, age, ethnic group, and sex. Long-term alcohol abuse produces physiological changes in the brain such as tolerance and physical dependence. Such brain chemistry changes maintain t...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2965 ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best overviews on Substance Abuse that I have read
This is a straightforward book. The authors cover a lot of ground clearly and easily. This is not a dry book, rather it is engaging enough that it would qualify as an interesting read for both aspiring practitioners as well as someone not involved in, or familiar with, the Substance Abuse treatment field.

This book is quite complete; it covers a complex subject well and allows the reader to get a gestaltic understanding yet also provides for some depth of clinical/granular information.

The book is probably worth the price simply for the references at the back of each chapter (a who's who of contributors to the science of abuse and dependence)..this is well grounded information presented concisely by geniune experts so the reader can come up the learning curve quickly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Satisfied Customer in Clinical Substance Abuse Counseling
Nicholas Lessa (LCSW) and Walter Scanlon, Ph.D. have joined forces to put together an extremely pragmatic and useful reference guide to substance use disorders in clinical practice. Important topics include: 1) understanding mood-altering substances, 2) assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning, 3) determining the level of care needed, 4) coexisting mental disorders, and 5) the basics of recovery. My favorite chapter was the one on spirituality as an important factor in recovery. Written in clear understandable language with a personal yet objective tone, Lessa & Scanlon cover the "how to" of providing recovery options, and the elements of an effective counseling environment in real life situations. Levels of Care (LOC) are covered in detail, although how to determine the level of care is not always clear. Theories such as Prochaska & DiClemente's Stages of Change Model, and Gorski's Model of Addiction, as well as terms used in diagnosis from the DSM-IV, and a description of personality disorders are covered, including excellent case studies. I enjoyed this book tremendously and found it very useful as an intern in the substance abuse field. Doug Uhlig, CASAC Intern, Ph.D. Student, New York City. ... Read more

Product Description
Kyle Keegan was like many teenagers: eager to fit in at school, he experimented with alcohol and drugs. Soon, his abuse of these substances surpassed experimentation and became a ruthless addiction to heroin that nearly destroyed his life.

Now in recovery, Keegan tells his remarkable story in Chasing the High. Starting with the early days of alcohol and drug use, Keegan charts his decline into crime and homelessness as his need for heroin surpassed all thoughts of family and friends, of right and wrong. He then goes on to use these experiences to offer guidance and practical advice to other young people who may be struggling with substance abuse. In straightforward, easy-to-understand language and along with the psychiatric expertise of Howard Moss, MD, Keegan discusses what is known about the neurobiology of addiction in young people, how to seek treatment, and how to get the most out of professional help.He also covers such topics as therapies which are used to combat addiction, how to talk to families and friends about substance abuse, and how to navigate risky situations. Both an absorbing memoir and a useful resource for young people.

Part of the Adolescent Mental Health Initiative series of books written specifically for teens and young adults, Chasing the High offers hope to young people who are struggling with substance abuse, helping them to overcome its challenges and to go on to lead healthy, productive lives. ... Product Description
People with mood disorders often have simultaneous problems with addiction, and those with substance abuse problems are especially susceptible to mood disorder. Thetreatment of such patients can be particularly complicated, and many receive treatment for onlyone of their disorders.

In this book, fourteen clinicians discuss the extent of the problem, methods of assessment, typicalcourses, and treatments--including both psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy. They address theall-too-frequent necessity of proceeding with treatment before a clear diagnosis is known, andthey claim that distinguishing between primary and secondary disorders is initially less criticalthan previously assumed. Contending that clinicians treating comorbid mood / substanceproblems must be both more flexible and more watchful than those treating either disorder alone, the authors also describe various models of care. Throughout the book, they provide differingpoints of view on such issues as the value of pharmacotherapy for those still abusingpsychoactive substances. Written for those who treat addictions, including counselors, clergy, and employee assistance staff, as well as for traditional mental health professionals,Integrating Treatment for Mood and Substance Use Disorders is an invaluable referencefor any clinician who works with dually diagnosed clients. ...
