Product Description
Integrated Treatment for Co-Occurring Disorders addresses a complex client population, which presents service providers with significant professional challenges. Underlying personality disorders compromise treatment effectiveness for medical, other psychiatric, or trauma services, as well as the ability these individuals have in adhering to probation, parole, or court-ordered treatment requirements. A co-occuring substance use disorder amplifies the difficulties experienced by personality-disordered individuals, exacerbates the precarious nature of their relationships, and raises the skill level needed by service providers attempting to help them. There can be significant professional satisfaction in working effectively with the interplay of addiction and disorders of personality. The book brings focus to the specifics of assessment and treatment for this type of co-occurring disorder and suggests that greater adaptability, fewer self-sabotaging behaviors, and an abstinent lifestyle are all possible. Recovery from both disorders is the journey these individuals take toward greater maturation, reliable impulse control, and coping skills that are not dependent upon the evasion of the demands of living or use of substances to manage stress or uncomfortable affect. Recovery is possible, and service providers can assist these clients on their path to wellness. ... Read more

Double your effectiveness as a clinician. This textbook is a must read, must own, comprehensive and optomistic guide for professionals working with clients diagnosed with both substance use and personality disorders. The organization of the book makes comparisons, cross referencing and quick extraction of information easy for clinicians to use as they apply theorectical concepts to practice. The clarity of writing style and depth of information in this text act as aguide for practice. This text needs to be on every clinicians bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Text
This is an impressive book, clear, concise, a pleasure to read, and full of material pulled together from many fragmented resources and much experience. It is rare to find information that is both matter-of-fact AND compassionate in describing these disorders and the people who have them. Too often clinicians disparage people with even one of the disorders, let alone the two (co-occurring) disorders because the clients can't be "fixed" to our satisfaction. This book is a sound guide for both experienced clinicians and students learning the trade. Highly recommended. ... Read more

Product Description
Make sure every child gets a chance to be heard

HIV, Substance Abuse and Communication Disorders in Children examines the language problems of young children from special populations. Essential as a textbook for graduate and upper-level undergraduate studies and as a reference resource, this unique book presents up-to-date research and compelling case studies that illustrate how prenatal exposure to drugs, alcohol, and HIV can affect a child in utero and continue to handicap its development after birth. Each chapter includes discussion threads and review questions to promote critical thinking and clinical problem-solving skills in the classroom.

HIV, Substance Abuse and Communication Disorders in Children looks at the negative impact a mother's lifestyle practices can have on her developing child with a nod toward the significant prevalence of HIV and substance abuse in today's society. Some estimates place the number of infants born after prenatal exposure to illicit drugs as three-quarters of a million--every year. When alcohol is added, the figure rises to more than 1 million. This powerful book focuses specifically on the serious consequences of alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, and crack cocaine abuse, including poor language development and speech delays, limited vocabulary, the inability to make their needs known, poor articulation, the inability to follow commands, limited expressive language skills, and the inability to understand the real meaning of words and generalize them. And of the nearly 5,000 children in the United States living with AIDS, almost all will struggle with speech production and communication disorders as the disease affects their brain, spinal cord, and central nervous system.

HIV, Substance Abuse and Communication Disorders in Children examines:

the effect of drugs on the brain
pregnancy and drug use trends
common drugs of abuse
Kosakoff's syndrome
fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) among Native Americans and African Americans
neurologic sequellae
speech and language intervention
rehabilitation considerations
treatment and family counseling
and much more

HIV, Substance Abuse and Communication Disorders in Children is essential for graduate and undergraduate students working with language disorders in special populations. ... Read more

Product Description
Your blueprint to develop and manage effective co-occurring treatment programs!

Sequential or parallel treatments for co-occurring disorders are much less effective than a quality co-occurring treatment program. Most mental health and substance abuse professionals know how to provide an effective program for individuals with a substance use or mental health disorder, but few are aware of the issues involved in providing services for those with dual diagnosis. Designing, Implementing, and Managing Treatment Services for Individuals with Co-Occurring Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders: Blueprints for Action gives you with the tools you need to develop an effective program specific to co-occurring treatment as well as to implement and manage the program's services.

Author Edward Hendrickson shares his knowledge from over two decades of developing and implementing co-occurring treatment services. Designing, Implementing, and Managing Treatment Services for Individuals with Co-Occurring Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders: Blueprints for Action is thorough, insightful, and informative, covering all facets of plan and execution, helping you form strategies to address a co-occurring treatment program’s unique issues. The book examines the historical basis of the current dual treatment system to provide the philosophical tenets the program must follow and the essential qualities for an effective treatment program. It explores the issues in creating a new program or expanding an existing one, as well as the mechanics of day-to-day management. Helpful appendices, tables, and case examples illustrate the discussion.

Designing, Implementing, and Managing Treatment Services for Individuals with Co-Occurring Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders: Blueprints for Action discusses:

developing the necessary infrastructure for integrated treatment programs

the eight essential qualities for an effective treatment program

choosing a target population

identifying specific services to implement

implementation of services in an existing treatment setting

implementation of services in a non-mental health or substance abuse setting

hiring and training staff

clinical supervision and human resource development

program management issues

multilevel and multi-organization systems

steps to ensure program survival

Designing, Implementing, and Managing Treatment Services for Individuals with Co-Occurring Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders: Blueprints for Action is more than an instructional text for students; it is an essential resource for any substance abuse and mental health professional considering implementing a co-occurring treatment program. ... Product Description
This book has a much wider focus than traditional books written about drug and alcohol addictions. This unique book is written by medical specialists who diagnose, treat and research addictive disorders in their specialities. Thus, it meets the needs of the typical medical practitioner who wants to learn about and treat patients with addictive disorders in their practices. Because alcohol and drug problems are so prevalent and affect medical conditions profoundly, the medical specialist will improve their knowledge and skill to diagnose and treat addictive disorders in their specialties.

Drug and alcohol addictions occur commonly in medical populations; 25–50% of patients seen by primary care physicians have alcohol and drug disorders, with even higher prevalence in certain medical specialty populations. Drug use (including illicit drug use and actual or perceived misuse of prescribed medications), alcohol use, and what has been called unhealthy drinking are even more common in trauma centers and our society. Currently, there are no authoritative addiction texts that focus on the identification, intervention and management of either “addictive disorders in medical populations” or “medical complications in addiction populations”.

Neurobiological progress in the field of addiction has been amazing and evidence-based treatments have developed at a phenomenal pace, with bench to office applications for tobacco, alcohol and drugs. Pharmacological and psychosocial treatments are described here in detail and in practical terms. The medical and mental complications of addiction are explained comprehensively throughout the text. Clinical considerations are the predominant theme, with the standards of clinical practice grounded in the most current research. The chapters include practical presentations of both clinical and research materials, with instruments for screening and assessment and treatment.

It will be useful for all those seeking information to help a patient or family with a tobacco, alcohol or drug problem. We hope this book can give answers and direction to the identification and management of addictions and their medical complications in patient populations. ... Read more
