It has no illustrations and there may be typos or missing text.When you buy the General Books edition of this book you get free trial access to Million-Books.com where you can select from more than a million books for free.Excerpt: ETIOLOGY.Mr. Hutchinson l has given us the following list of the local effects of exposure to cold :Pallor (emptiness of arterial and venous capillaries);Brick-red congestion (fulness of arterial and venous capillaries);Plaice spots -- lighter spots occasionally scattered over the brick-red skin (unexplained);Cyanosis (weakness of venules, usually associated with contraction of arteries);Sclerosis (induration of skin with pale marbling);Sphacelus (sloughing from arterial constriction);Onychitis and arthritis;Chilblain and other forms of inflammation. Certain of these conditions constitute the essential phenomena of Raynaud's disease.Some light is thrown upon this subject by a consideration of what takes place in ordinary frost-bite. The freedom with which the ether spray can be used for the production of local anaesthesia shows that the skin can be actually frozen without serious consequences, if this condition be not kept up for more than a minute or 'No. 86, p. 86.so. But if the skin is exposed to a very low temperature for a prolonged period harm will result. There is first contraction of all the unstriped muscle of the part, so that the arterioles are narrowed until, it may be, their lumen is obliterated. Consequently, the arterial blood supply is cut off, and the part becomes shrunken and pale, or " dead." Since no warm blood reaches it, it now freezes readily if the exposure be continued, and if this persist still longer, necrosis of the part will take place, and thereafter, even if warmth be applied, the circulation ... ...
