Product Description

Systemic lupus erythematosus is an autoimmune disease characterized by organ system damage (for example, to the skin and kidneys) and is often accompanied by fever, seizures, and malaise. The epidemiology of the disease is complex, reflecting the multiple genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors that contribute to it. Although the overall prevalence varies, the relatively high incidence among women of childbearing age (about one in a thousand) is evidence of the influence of hormonal factors, while the fact that relatives are also affected gives weight to the genetic component.

In Neuropsychiatric Manifestations of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Patricia M. Moore and Robert G. Lahita bring together a multidisciplinary group of experts to explore neurological and psychiatric aspects of this disease. Topics include stress, strokes, and seizures; cerebrovascular disease; neuroendocrine aspects of systemic lupus erythematosus; and autoanitbodies and SLE.

4-0 out of 5 stars Doctors that treat lupus should read this book.
Published in 1997, this volume is a result of a conference held in September of 1996. It is a collection of over 30 journal articles and poster papers. Because it is aimed at doctors, people comfortable readingmedical journal articles will find its coverage of NP-SLE interesting; it'sprobably a bit on the technical side for most non-MD readers.Any doctor(primary care or specialist) that treats patients with lupus should readthis book if they're not already familiar with it's contents. At leastthat's the opinion of this reviewer, who became acutely aware of thedisturbing level of ignorance of NP-SLE among even well-regardedrheumatologists. ... A Really helpful book!.I have't read it all jet, but it seems to be really inspiring and helps to see lupus in a diferent way, with more hope and help to understand a lot of things about this illness.
I think the book wan't new as they said, or wasn't used but had been in the bookstore for a while, but i think i made a good deal for the pice that i paid.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alifesaver!!
I have been diagnosed with Lupus for almost 40 years, but I was undiagnosed for 10 years. Finally an Internist put together my collection of ailments and diagnosed me as having Lupus. This was such a relief but also a frightening time as 40 years ago Lupus was still a fairly unknown. The blood tests, etc. had not yet been fully developed and what information was out there was pretty negative and scary.
This book was not on the market at the time and I didn't know how to cope with an illness that had changed my life and how to tell my family and friends what was wrong with me.
By the time I discovered this book I had learned to live with Lupus but this book was so marvelous in describing this crazy illness, that I gave copies to family members that wanted to know more.
I also have given numerous copies to individuals who had been diagnosed with life-changing illnesses such as diabetes, etc. The author's insight on how to deal with Lupus for yourself and your family is truly applicable to anyone facing a disease that will be around for the rest of your life.
I especially recommend as required reading the chapter that is directed to family members and how they can be helpful to the Lupus patient.
At this time I am ordering this book to be sent to my daughter who is experiencing some of the ailments that are typical of Lupus. I hope that she will get the help she needs in diagnosing what is wrong with her. In the meantime maybe this book will give her some help.

3-0 out of 5 stars Coping With Lupus: Apractical Guide to Alleviating the Chall
I have found this book to be a helpful well rounded guide to Lupus. From the symptoms before diagnosis to after diagnosis, and how to deal with every day challenges and side effects of the disease and treatments.I beleive it is a great jumping off point for the newly diagnosed. It dispells myths, and give a newly diagnosed patient comfort at a time that they may be feeling overwhelmed and desperate by the diagnosis of Lupus. It is a very easy read, as the doctor speaks in layman language rather than complicating things with lot's of medical termonolgy and anatomy terms. For a person who is looking for beginning over view of the disease it is very helpful. But, if you are looking for more datailed information on specific tests, treatments, or the physiology of the disease one would need to look further. ... Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Systemic Lupus Erythematosus," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Systemic Lupus Erythematosus in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Product Description
This new book is devoted to leading-edge research developments in lupus which is a condition of chronic inflammation caused by an autoimmune disease. Autoimmune diseases are illnesses that occur when the body's tissues are attacked by its own immune system. The immune system is a complex system within the body that is designed to fight infectious agents, for example, bacteria, and other foreign invaders. One of the mechanisms that the immune system uses to fight infections is the production of antibodies. Patients with lupus produce abnormal antibodies in their blood that target tissues within their own body rather than foreign infectious agents. Because the antibodies and accompanying cells of inflammation can involve tissues anywhere in the body, lupus has the potential to affect a variety of areas of the body.Sometimes lupus can cause disease of the skin, heart, lungs, kidneys, joints, and/or nervous system. When only the skin is involved, the condition is called discoid lupus. When internal organs are involved, the condition is called systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). ... Read more

Product Description
During the past 50 years, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has been the main subject in the field of immunopathology. Each individual discovery was followed by the discovery of a multitude of related immune phenomena. This book reflects the present status of our understanding of this protean disease. Various animal models clearly show that different gene combinations can lead to the final clinical expression of SLE, with HLA class II genes probably responsible for the targeting of the autoimmune response. Similarly, research on cytokines in SLE patients has shown that SLE is a syndrome depending on different pathways. Finally, the question of prognosis is discussed. Fortunately, with every passing decade, the prognosis for patients with SLE gets better and better. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good coverage of a little covered subject
Even though the title is in medical jargon, this book is really for the average person trying to get a handle on how to deal with their particular connective tissue disease from Lupus to CREST to some weird rash related to an auto immune reaction. After a short intro on how the author came to write about connective tissue diseases, the book takes each disease, or condition, and systematically going through the symptoms, conventional medical treatment with their side effects and then alternatives including foods to eat or avoid, supplements, and related treatments. After this there are sections on herbs and foods that are antibiotic, that help vasolate the blood vessels--ie open them up and help circulation, especially in the extremities: fingers, toes, hands and feet, and items that do other specific work with the body to alleviate symptoms--not just masks them. The book has several weaknesses--although the bulk of the book is well organized--the beginning and end are a bit confusing. The table of contents is strange--seems more like a list than what is in the book. However you can probably skip those parts for all they add, and start right in on reading about the various diseases, especially since many are related or some people can have one condition like Raynaud's along with more serious diseases. Also the index is just about useless. There are index entries pointing to pages that do not exist in the book and the index misses many pages that mention an important symptoms such as dry eyes or lesions, for example. And the sub-subjects are not indented, so it's confusing. this is true at times in the main text--it's not formatted so that you know that something is separate from something else. Still there is a lot of good info here, so I suggest you take notes if you read the book--to note page numbers and info that is important to you, so you can find it later.
The book needed a good editor and/or someone with a sharp eye for formatting. I would have given five stars if the formatting and index had been up to snuff. ... Read more

Product Description

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), commonly called lupus, is a chronic autoimmune disease which can involve every organ system of the human body. In lupus, the body's immune system, which normally functions to protect against foreign invaders, becomes hyperactive, forming antibodies that attack normal tissues and organs, including the skin, joints, kidneys, brain, heart, lungs, and blood. Lupus is characterized by periods of illness, called flares, and periods of wellness, or remission.

Lupus is the prototypic autoimmune disease and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus examines the entire field of autoimmunity by looking at lupus. There is no other book in the field which carefully covers scientific research, clinical findings, organ system involvement and treatment between its two covers. The fifth edition continues to serve as a vital translational reference for specialists in the diagnosis and management of patients with SLE, and as a key a tool for the measurement of clinical activity for pharmaceutical development and basic research of the disease and a reference work for hospital libraries.
