5-0 out of 5 stars Tay-Sachs Disease
I am very interested in reading about genetic disorders and I am very pleased to see this book featured on Amazon!I purchased it and I have not been sorry! It really helps to have books like this for people to read-especially people who have had a family member with Infantile TSD/Juvenile TSD/ or LOTS! This book is informative and helpful! As I'd mentioned in one of my earlier reviews, I'd had to do a report in my 9th grade health class and borrowed a book dealing with abnormal neurological behaviour and Tay-Sachs Disease was listed in that particular book! Then in 1974, in the Jewish Exponent, I'd read an article about the effects of Infantile Tay-Sachs Disease on an infant! In 1980, I'd seen a TV advertisement about this devastating disorder and it featured a stricken child lying unresponsively in a hospital bed in the backround!Keep up the hard work in featuring books with this disorder!

I am glad I bought this book!I find it very interesting to read about genetic disorders!I will say that this is a very informative book for anyone who has been involved in genetic disorders! It is sad that children who are afflicted with this disorder have such brief lives since their bodies become so ravaged from this disorder!I hope that there will be hope in finding a cure for Tay-Sachs disease and other serious inherited disorders which children can have! It is a book for anyone who would like help if they'd had a child with Tay-Sachs Disease or know of families who lost a child/children to Tay-Sachs Disease! Dawn E. Lowenstein ... Read more

Product Description
Tay-Sachs disease is a rare hereditary disease caused by a genetic mutation that leaves the body unable to produce an enzyme necessary for fat metabolism in nerve cells, producing central nervous system degeneration. In infants, it is characterized by progressive mental deterioration, blindness, paralysis, epileptic seizures, and death by age four. Adult-onset Tay-Sachs occurs in persons who have a genetic mutation that is similar but allows some production of the missing enzyme. There is no treatment for Tay-Sachs.
A test to determine whether an infant is carrying the Tay-Sachs disease was introduced in 1969. However, work continues to be done to help find a cure.Because there is no cure for this deadly disease, genetic research is essential.
Advances in Genetics presents an eclectic mix of articles of use to all human and molecular geneticists. They are written and edited by recognized leaders in the field and make this an essential series of books for anyone in the genetics field. ... Read more

I have really found this a VERY interesting book!I hope that this book especially would be helpful to couples who have lost children to this genetic disorder!I have a Jewish heritage as my late father was from a Jewish backround! My mother isn't Jewish, but from the time I'd been a freshman in Jr. High School, that was when I first heard about Tay-Sach's Disease when I had to do a book report for health class! The book did list Tay-Sachs Disease, plus I also would read about Tay-Sachs in the Jewish Exponent back in 1974.Dawn E. Excerpt: Tay-Sachs disease (abbreviated TSD, also known as GM2 gangliosidosis or Hexosaminidase A deficiency) is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder. In its most common variant known as infantile Tay-Sachs disease, it presents a relentless deterioration of mental and physical abilities which commences at six months of age and usually results in death by the age of four. It is caused by a genetic defect in a single gene with one defective copy of that gene inherited from each parent. The disease occurs when harmful quantities of gangliosides accumulate in the nerve cells of the brain, eventually leading to the premature death of those cells. There is currently no cure or treatment. Tay-Sachs Disease is rare. Other autosomal disorders such as cystic fibrosis and sickle cell anemia are far more common. The disease is named after British...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=56481 ... Read more

Product Description
Lysosomal storage diseases LSDs are a group of approximately 40 rare inherited metabolic disorders that result from defects in lysosomal function. Lysosomal storage diseases result when a specific organelle in the body's cells the lysosome malfunctions. Tay-Sachs disease was the first of these disorders to be described, in 1881, followed by Gaucher disease in 1882 and Fabry disease in 1898. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, de Duve and colleagues, using cell fractionation techniques, cytological studies and biochemical analyses, identified and characterized the lysosome as a cellular organelle responsible for intracellular digestion and recycling of macromolecules. This was the scientific breakthrough that would lead to the understanding of the physiological basis of the Lysosomal Storage Diseases. Pompe disease was the first disease to be identified as an LSD in 1963, with L. Hers reporting the cause as a deficiency of ?-glucosidase. Hers also suggested that other diseases, such as the Mucopolysaccharidosis, might be due to enzyme deficiencies. ... Read more
