4-0 out of 5 stars A MUST have resource for parents of ASP/autistic
I used this book to gear up for an IEP meeting--a meeting during which I was demanding that my child's substandard IEP, an IEP I had waited FOURTEEN MONTHS to get written--and let me tell you. This was a HUGE help. There is a worksheet in the back that has you write down your child's present functioning in each category--categories I would not have thought of alone--and walks you through developing annual goals. These two pages were used the most of anything I brought along to the meeting.

I have tangled with our local school district many times and only NOW after reading this do I really have the tools i need to insist that my child get the care and provisions he needs. Thank you, thank you, for this book! Excellent resource!

4-0 out of 5 stars How to KNOW if your child is making social progress!!
I bought this book as a result of getting my son's IEP back with vague social goals and no way to tell if he was progressing. Most schools do not know how to write social goals, let alone make them measurable. It is our job as parents to find the answers the school can't or won't find. I rejected the social goals on his IEP and went in search for an answer. This book was it!
I read it in a few hours and had complete understanding of the concepts and loved how the goals were actually measurable. I had a meeting with the school psychologist and presented ideas from the book to her (at her request I also lent her the book). The ideas are practical, do not cost the school money and not that much extra work. Because of this book I will now know how my son is actually progressing in the areas of social skills and the team will be able to know if their interventions are working or if we need to change them.
**My son has NLD which is debatable as to whether it is in the autism spectrum. I found some assessment questions & goals were not applicable to my son. If my child had HFA or AS I would have given the book 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great pleasure to read for practical advice
While not as weighty as some other social skill oriented books, Moyes' book is probably more accessible to the average parent and teacher. It is a relatively short book and easily read. The references are good and there is no scent of snake oil from the overall product.

While notionally the book is about framing individualised education plans (IEPs), the bulk of the book is taken up with explanations of Asperger syndrome, its manifestations, assessment and various interventions. Practically speaking, the sections on assessment will probably be of more interest to teachers than parents.

There is a long chapter covering interventions and it is reasonably comprehensive. The author has clearly tried to position the book between the professional literature on interventions and the barely above anecdotal. And it works surprising well. Each of the inteventions is reviewed sparingly but fairly. At all times the emphasis is on listing advantages and disadvantages. The chapter on IEPs covers all the relevant requirements but isn't slow to point out the problems to be encountered.

All in all I found this a very remarkable book, and worth at least twice its weight in gold. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Sharon Butler was working as a massage therapist and Hellerwork practitioner when shedeveloped carpal tunnel syndrome and tendonitis. Unable to sleep through the night because of the pain andconcerned about her livelihood, she built upon her knowledge of connective tissue anddeveloped a series of stretching exercises to gently relieve the tension in her body. After daily stretching inthis way, her pain soon subsided. To prove that these exercises weren't just a fluke, Butler intentionallyoverworked her body to bring back her symptoms. While this may not have been the smartest move, herstretching program again relieved her pain.

The magic behind her powerful exercises is their focus on fascial tissue. Fascia, which is stronger thansteel, holds the body together. It wraps around muscle fibers, bones, and tendons. (If you've ever looked atan uncooked piece of chicken and noticed the glistening white layer over the meat, you've seen fascia.) Inpeople who overwork their bodies, the fascia hardens, a natural response to prevent future injury.Unfortunately, this stiffness worsens with repeated insults to the body. Muscles, nerves, and tendons tenseup and inflame even more and may even adhere to each other. Metabolic waste products can build up andbecome trapped instead of being carried away by the lymph system, and even more pressure is placed onthe affected body tissues.

Enter Butler's exercises. The book is arranged to let you pick and choose the correct stretches to suit yourneeds. Too much typing, guitar playing, or gardening? Stiff neck, tingling fingers, sore upper arms, or allthree? However you developed your repetitive strain injury and whatever your upper-body symptoms (or ifyou're smart and you'd like to prevent such problems), there are multiple stretches in Conquering CarpalTunnel Syndrome to suit your needs. The book is arranged to help users develop a personalizedstretching program with more than 40 stretches for the upper body, forearms, wrists, fingers, and thumbs tochoose from. Butler thoroughly explains the importance of stretching and the correct (and incorrect) way todo it, and the exercises are lucidly illustrated. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty great relief for me
After 3 years of suffering RSI from working at a PC, I was desperate, and had tried regular medicine, and even acupuncture (this last, I'm still on, and it works) but the best relief I have found was from the series of exercises found on this book. From upper-body to hand-fingers, this book (Comprised of mostly full-page illustrations) helps you relieve the symptons of your RSI. I can't say I don't have any pain anymore, but I can say it has greatly reduced, and improving.
There is little text in this book, dealing mostly with how you should do the repetitions and how to avoid further injury, then it is right ot the action with the diagrams and instructions for every exercise.
If you have an RSI try this book, and also check for your posture while working, seating, and standing. I have a great non-commercial link about this for you, write me if you want it.

Health and peace to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable for anyone suffering from RSI
This is the book I return to again and again, since the exercises, which are gentle and easy to do, really do help on tense and injured muscles and tissue. The book is very much focused on the drawings of the exercises with helpful text on the sides and references to important intro text scattered throughout to help you remember the essentials of safe stretching. Very easy to use book, and the exercies do help! If you need more information in general about RSI, the physiology of it and treatments, I have found "It is not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome!" to be a very informative book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend this book!
If you have an RSI, get this book. (Also, I just found out that Sharon Butler has a web site: http://www.selfcare4rsi.com. I'm definitely going to check it out.)

This book presents information on RSIs not found elsewhere. It begins with a concise but thorough discussion of the role of fascia in the development of RSIs. From my personal experience with over a dozen MDs, many doctors, even hand specialists, don't understand the role of fascia in these injuries. As a result, despite their good intentions, they can't effectively help many RSI sufferers. Neither can many well-intentioned physical therapists.

Also, never before had I heard of the concept of the "stretch point," which is the secret of success for this program. I suspect that people who don't get results with this program have not applied this concept but are stretching too hard and fast, only worsening their symptoms.

Besides helping you figure out which stretches to do for your symptoms, there's a "Prevention by Profession" section that lists various professions and the suggested stretches to do for them. It's not just computer users who get these injuries!

If I was able to recover from my disabling RSI, so can you. Good luck with your recovery! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "a wealth of practical information"
Cassidy and Allanson have assembled a talented group of authors to address the more common genetic disorders. The chapters are extremely well organized and each emphasizes not only diagnostic techniques and differential diagnosis, but also patient management. The generalist will find a wealth of practical information readily available and accessible. The clinical geneticist will discover and rediscover valuable "pearls" within this text. --Edward R.B. 5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely a must have book!
This book helps affected/infected individual understand the nutritional needs of the body and also goes on to describe many other aspects of HIV. This book is definitely a must have for HIV+ individuals and caregivers/supporters.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for those with HIV & for their support system.
Dr.Romeyn has addressed one of the most serious problems facing people with HIV, the devastating bodily wasting that occurs in those struggling with the effects of this disease. Her work is a comprehensive approach to nutritional treatment. She is articulate and yet not patronizing. Her concern and compassion for those who suffer from this dissease is quite apparent. I believe those who see her in her private practice are most fortunate. I am grateful for her work, and have given copies of this book to several men and women both in the parish and in the community at large. There is a great need in the larger community for this quality of information. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sensitively Breaking Silence
In 1996, an Associate Professor at the University of Maryland at Baltimore School of Social Work co-founded the International Paruresis Association (IPA). That professor, Steve Soifer, is also a co-author of this book. It is the first monograph on Paruresis or Shy Bladder Syndrome: the inability to urinate in a public restroom or in the presence of others....Classified as a social phobia in DSM-IV-TR (300.23), it is associated with impairment in multiple functional domains: employment, education, and social relationships. This debilitating condition thrives in a climate of shame and secrecy (on the part of paruretics) and ignorance (by health and mental health care providers). This deceptively slim book may help you identify paruresis in yourself, a loved one, or a client/patient. One section helps the reader rule out other conditions (pp.16-18). The brain-body connection is clearly described in Chapter Two, and includes both a diagram of the human urinary system and a chart of the human nervous system. The authors present a ten-step approach for Graduated Exposure Therapy, the treatment of choice at present. Appendices include a literature review, a synopsis of "the evolution of the bathroom and its impact on paruresis", and resources. A seven page bibliography is included. There is no index, and it is hoped that future editions will remedy this. This thoughtful, sensitive book breaks the silence which has hitherto dominated the subject. For that, and for the prospect of relief it holds for over 17 million sufferers, we may all be grateful.

5-0 out of 5 stars No more suffering alone
This book is the most comprehensive guide to the suffering paruretic. It defines and provides a self test to determaine your level of severity. It relates numerous stories and experiences that you can identify with. The President of The International Paruresis Association, Steven Soifer speaks of his own suffering and eventual triumph. Some of the topics include How Paruretics Cope-Isolation and Avoidance and The Causes of Blashful Bladder Syndrome: Unravelling the Mystery. It also outlines the working of the urinary system. It offers methods of self treatment through Graduated Exposure Therapy and addresses the topic of The Medical Community and Paruresis. Have you ever thought about telling others?. Why not start your own group?. This book will show you how step-by-step. Need to tell a friend or loved one. This book can help. Each page is clearly written is easy to understand terms and is finished with a summarization of each chapter. All you ever wanted and needed to know is found in this book written by four of the leading Avoidant Paruresis research specialists. This book is the first step to treating and conquiring your Paruresis. Don't suffer alone anymore. Begin the road to recovery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Press the Order Now !!! - This book has a plan that works!
After buying a number of general phobia books, I never found one that specifically dealt with the problem of Shy Bladder Syndrome. Then I ordered "Shy Bladder Syndrome: Your Step-By-Step Guide to Overcoming Paruresis." After practicing the program outlined in this book, I can say that I have definitely seen results.

If you follow the steps outlined in this self help book, you should see results too. If you're serious about getting on the road to recovery, then buy this book today. You won't regret it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Saved my life!
I have had MCS, fibromyalgia, leaky gut for over twenty years. I have read a plethoria of books and have been to the most notable in this field without relief. After reading this book and following Dr,. Gloria Gilbere's program I am, for the first time in years, experiencing less symptoms, and am feeling healthier than I thought possible. Dr Gilbere works closely with me, has the patience of a saint, considering how complicated and overwhelming this illness can be, and I get a sense that she not only cares about me but have found her to go above and beyound the call of duty. This book will change your life but one needs to work hard by sticking diligently with teh program. It then will transform your life. good luck and happy reading. Jennifer Millett New York

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book
This book has allot of information on how your gut, colon and intestines and how important they are to your health. This book is an easy read- not a medical textbook but a very easy to read and understand book. It details out how the gut, colon and intestines can affect your overall health. I got the book for Chemical Sensitivity and I feel she is "Right on the money" when she discusses the causes and how to go about treatment.

She is a wonderful person and does truly care about the wellness of her patients. Check out this book and for more in-depth information on this subject get her other book "Invisible Illnesses" it is even better!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good info, needs a good editor
This is a frustrating book to write a review about. This subject really needs a book like this; professionally published, nicely formatted, attractively done, well advertised - something that the general public can latch onto and absorb. The information is important and advanced in a simple and easy to read fashion.... But who edited this book? It either appears to have been written rapidly with little concern for sentence structure or perhaps Dr. Gilbere is originally a foreign speaker? This is one of the poorest written book I have come across. Alot of work went into producing, formatting, and advertising this book. Maybe next time they will put some into editing. Not really a big problem given that theres alot of good info and this is a subject crying out for alternative points of view. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting... I am keeping it on file for future use..
Iwould DEFINITELY reccommend this book for ANYONE to read--not just those that have controlling parents--or think that they may have controlling parents. This book was especially helpful as someone who is very close to me fits this profile to a tee... This book helped me to see why my loved one is the way he is and why he copes in his life the way that he does. The book does not, however, discuss what to do if you are a spouse, significant other, etc. of a person that has been emotionally incested. I wish that it did... READ IT... It will help you understand a lot of issues much more clearly.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the most beneficial self-help book I've read.
This book helped me more than any other self-help book I have read. Not only did it help me learn things about my past and why I have some of the behaviors I have now, it taught me things that I did and did not want for my two young boys. It was very easy to read and understand and described principles I apply to my life daily. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who feels they have a parent or parents that controls their feelings, actions and life.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Important Book
In this comprehensive book about emotional incest, Pat Love goes into great depth about the causes of emotional incest and its devastating consequences. 4-0 out of 5 stars Very good if you use it with more PCOS books
I found this book to be very helpful. I was diagnosed with PCOS about 4 weeks sgo, after suffering from the symptoms for 9 years. If you combine this book with another one like "what to do when the doctor says it's PCOS" you will understand a lot about how to eat to fight the PCOS symptoms, specially over weight. I didn't care about it being british, I understood everything anyway, so don't be afraid, this book will help.

3-0 out of 5 stars Diet is the answer, and you'll find a lot of answers here
PCOS treatment begins with adjusting your diet. Most, not all, women with PCOS suffer from insulin resistance (this simply means that the body cells are resisting allowing insulin to deliver the blood sugar they need, while the fat cells are screaming "Hey! Just back that truckload of glucose in RIGHT here!"). This book does not have all the answers, but it is a good overview of how nutrition affects PCOS.

Many women with PCOS have had great success with changing their diet to treat insulin resistance. Learn the basics here, then get a copy of one of the low glycemic index diets (Insulin Resistance Diet, South Beach, etc.) and eat your way to good health!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource Book
I found this book to be filled with a lot of useful information that it kept reinforcing throughout. The title is a little deceiving because it says "Diet" when it really is a dietary living book. It covers a lot of information that really opened my eyes to how I was currently eating and how I should really be eating. It helped motivate me to go see a nutritionist so I could get a more specialized diet regiment suited to my personal needs. It also helped my husband understand better what was going on with me and my special nutritional needs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Positive Results
This book has given my son his life back (and mine). We have gone through numerous doctor visits and testing, but only this book has provided us with the much needed guidance and knowledge. My son was 12 years old when diagnosed with IBS. He was tried on different prescription medications, but Heather's suggestion of peppermint oil was not only more effective, but is also a nature based product.Truly what has been the best advice is to start off the day with a soluble fiber and eat these foods as much as possible. My son is now regaining weight and his energy level has increased.I am a nurse and was skeptical at first that I could find the answers from this book and not from his physicians. However, this book and Eating for IBS, also by Heather, have become my bibles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Have IBS? This book is a must!
I can't recommend this book highly enough. For years I've been plagued by what doctors had diagnosed as IBS. They talked about foods, particularly fiber, but since I've been a vegetarian for nearly 30 years, I thought I knew what I needed to about food, and was told that my diet was good. I thought the answer for me was in eating very little, no more than twice a day, and hoping... Nevertheless, the problems persisted, becoming at times quite debilitating. A few weeks ago I learned of this book. I carefully read it, and, last week, for the first time in ages, I had two cross-country flights without any difficulty, and a week's vacation with only one problem. It's all due to this book, which is quite well written, extremely practical, with detailed suggestions, and transformative, in my experience.

Now, I suddenly have the feeling that perhaps actually feeling "normal" is possible, and normal is taking on a completely new meaning for me. For anyone with IBS, or who knows someone with IBS, this book is a MUST!

4-0 out of 5 stars Parents Will Succeed Where Teachers Won't
This text is wonderful for those who want to help give their children every possible advantage and potential possible.

Do not let the government schools take over, however. This manual is best used at home by loving parents and not by ADA pundits who care far more about their jobs than your precious little child. The schools get massive funding when they can label as many children as possible "disabled."

You will gain valuable insight into how to teach your child the best in this gem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas for accommodations & modifications
This book has absolutely terrific ideas for how to modify and accommodate an NLD child at school. I have gotten papers from school, that my son did poorly on and then found the answers of how to modify the papers to make them do-able for my son (same work just presented in a way he can understand). Then I would show the teacher the idea(s). I have been doing this all year and have learned the majority of the accomodations and modifications I show the teacher are from this book. The teacher now incorporates these into all of my sons school work. This has decreased his frustration and improved his quality of scool work and learning. Would be a great book for a teacher that has an NLD child in her class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful guide for Teachers to help NLD and AS students
This book has been a great help for the teachers working with my AS son. It provides a subject by subject blueprint for modifying curriculum that makes it fast and easy for a classroom teacher to accomodate different learners. I've purchased a number of copies of this book because everyone in the teaching profession who sees it wants to borrow it.

A must for parents working through the IEP process for their children--bring it to your meetings and make the team read it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fina a new life through just one book!
This book is beyond words to review it properly. MFR treatment with the John Barnes, PT system, and the wisdom in this book have literally given me a new life, taken me from being almost wheelchair bound, to being mobile, no longer housebound, and to now live with what pain has not YET been eliminated. I would not have believed the book, but I really DO, it has happened to me. I cannot recommend it highly enough. It will help you find peace, comfort and the path to a new life.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST for Healing...
This is the most profound book that I have ever read. It will "over and beyond" meet the needs of medical professionals, as well as the needs of their patients, regarding fascia constrictions and the affects those constrictions have on the body. Also, it goes into great depth regarding the correlation of how all wounds encountered in life affect our bodies and not just our minds...an extension of fixing the complete self in gains of becoming a whole self. You will not be able to lay this book down if you truly have a fascia problem, as story after story illustrate the healing powers of Myofascial Release. I contacted the John Barnes facilities for information on healing for myself before I even finished reading the book. I look forward to meeting this outstanding Physical Therapist and author and hopefully becoming a part of his next book...but most of all becoming pain free.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW, its like being in one of the seminars!
I bought this book, intending to read it slowly and digest all the wisdom it encompassed. Instead, I found myself voractiously attacking the book, unable to slow down. I'm in my second reading now. But if you've taken any of John Barnes' seminars, you'll feel like you've come home, and if you've never taken any seminars or experienced being a patient of MFR, its a wonderful introduction to the heart and soul of myofasical release. I can't recommend it highly enough! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
This book is controversial and has been called "dangerous" - but it would only be to those who read it to see what they want to see. Nowhere does he discount the usefulness of speech therapy, nor does he advise against seeking assistance and evaluations. On the contrary, he advises strongly to seek out independent evaluations.

Sowell is writing about a group of children who are extremely intelligent AND who talk late. He is very clear that most children who talk late do not fit the "Einstein Syndrome" description. But one doesn't need to have a child who falls precisely in this category to take something useful from this book.

The most important thing I got from it was to be skeptical of the various labels SLPs and school districts are so quick to put on children, and to seek out an independent evaluation for my son. That is, someone who had nothing to gain by labeling him, someone who would not be gaining a new client and therefore more income.

Additionally, Sowell illuminates our society's quickness to label all children who don't fit into the norm as having a disorder, whether it's in play preferences, temperament or language development.

I did see a lot of my son in this book - I had highlighted page after page and called my husband at work when I read about a 2 year old child who was moved to tears by Mozart, who could count to 100, spell various words, etc but not have a sequential conversation...could have been my 27 month old I was reading about. For that moment of catharsis, as well as the practical stuff, this book was invaluable to me.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Einstein syndrome
I found this book a fascinating read. I am the mother a very bright two year old boy who does not yet talk at all but understands everything I say. At 12 months old he figured how to open cupboards with child proof latches. He loves dismantling toys and putting them back together. His father is a technical whizz with computers, his uncle a civil engineer. My son displays all the characteristics described in Thomas Sowell's book except that he is an extremely socialable child, infact rather a comic, loves cuddles and has lots of friends. He is also very strong willed and refuses to hold my hand unless he chooses to! I will wait and see if I have a genius on my hands. I will also be extra careful about what, if any, speech therepy he receives in the future. I would recommend this book to anyone who has a late talking child.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Yet Limited
This book makes the excellent point that not all children with speech or language delays have cognitive deficits. And it is clear that there is a specific subset of children who have speech or language delays that have many specific elements in common -- the immediate relatives in analytical professions, etc. My first-born son, now 6, had speech and language issues until very recently, and if there were a "disorder" called Einstein Syndrome, he would be the one to have it. Now he is reading at the third- or fourth-grade level, at least, and has an excellent vocabulary, and that is just for starters. Clearly, there was nothing wrong with my son's intellect or his capacity for language. Was he just a late bloomer?

My real quarrel with this book is philisophical -- that the authors don't want these children "labelled," as if labelling were a bad thing, and it does not offer suggestions about how to respond to the fact that a child might have this syndrome. If the author makes the very valid point that some children who talk late are bright or of average intelligence, he should not end the inquiry there. Some children in his study don't talk at all. They're silent. Some, like mine, are voluble -- they talk all the time. But until very late, you can't understand a word they're saying. Why is that? Is that just a random thing?

Personally, I think that this syndrome is not a unified disorder, and a lot of the issues look like either Sensory Integration Issues or Asperger's Syndrome. But even if research shows this to be a unified disorder, now what? The authors are really suggesting that the parent merely clutch this book and smile when confronted by educators, passers-by, onlookers, grandparents, in-laws, friends, pediatricians, dentists and mechanics, who ask what's wrong with the child? Who throw diagnoses out? And what of the child with limited social skills? Is it responsible to indulge oneself in the avoidance of labelling, even though the existence of a label might allow children to get services outside a private setting? (Because even if a child will learn eventually to talk on his own fine, is it fair to have a 28-month-old in preschool who cannot make himself understood at all, if six months of speech therapy will fix the problem and doing nothing means the child will be unintelligible for twelve or eighteen months?). Is it fair to just smile and clutch the book if some of these children have social skills deficits that could be fixed with the same kind of training given children with Asperger's syndrome? Don't these children deserve to go through their toddler and preschool years without having all the adults in their lives look at them and shake their heads? Don't they deserve the same chance at a normative social life as any other cognitively normal, or gifted, child?

Contrast this book with The Out-of-Sync Child, by Carol Kranowitz, which not only describes a little-known but legitimate syndrome, but also gives suggestions for treatment and even things that can be done at home to make life less uncomfortable for sufferers of sensory integration disorder.

It may be that the Einstein Syndrome is a unified disorder, and the book makes an excellent case with regard to a discrete population of children who would otherwise be misdiagnosed. But the inquiry feels like watching someone begin a sentence and then stop talking too soon. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Sickness Inside
This chilling story of a little girl who was abused by her mother brought me to frustrated tears. This book is not for the weak of heart, it is a cutting truth of child abuse and it will make you feel, strongly what this child felt. I was abused as a child and I can tell you I remember conversations from 25 years ago, verbatim. The man who left the bad review should have his account closed for abusing this service. He is obviously dealing with his own issues of being abused and knows only how to lash out when his pain is triggered. He obviously doesn't understand his own pain or has issues remembering it which has caused him to be completely ignorant to the reality of the manifestation of child abuse as an adult. I hope he finds some help for himself somewhere. I was brought back into the pain of my childhood reading this book and it took me days to sift through all the memories that overwhelmed me. I was inspired by the author's strength of character and truly heroic effort to face the pain inside of her. This book is wonderfully written and took me through every high and low, causing me to be sad, angry, frustrated and introspective but most of all she is an example to my own strength. Reading her book has led me to a new level of healing and I look forward to more books from this author in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Reality of Abuse
This book, wonderfully written, captivated my heart and troubled my soul. The author, Julie Gregory, pulled from her triumph the pain and suffering she experienced as a little girl at the hands of her mother and and exposed the reader to all the mind bending realities of an abused child in America. She brings the reader through many of the experiences and trials of her life and shows how this innocent little girl found beauty in the world that had given her only suffering. She takes us through her steps of being abused, then escaping that abuse and beginning the long search to find herself over many countries and many miles then eventually to the healing strength she so beautifully reveals. This book is awesome and has given me incredible insight into the strength bred of facing our deepest fears and pain. Julie Gregory has inspired me to overcome and prevail.

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive
Impressive This is an impressive, impressionable book that deals with a subject that for many had no idea ever existed. 'Munchausen by Proxy', a type of child abuse, as real as and as cruel as any child abuse I have ever read about. The book does well to make the reader understand what this author has lived through. It is courageous and inspirational like that of 'Nightmares Echo',with pieces of 'A child Called it', the devastational side of abuse written within it's pages. It ranks right up there with the two books mentioned and I consider it a must read book, and a well written memoir. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amalgam Illness, Diagnosis and Treatment : What You Can Do t
Until I got a hold of Dr. Cutler's book, trying to help my son had been like working in the dark. I had long suspected heavy metal toxicity to be involved in my son's autism diagnosis, but my concerns had been quickly dismissed by well-meaning doctors who found no evidence of poisoning using what I later learned from Dr. Cutler were inaccurate diagnostic methods. Years of fruitless searching and thousands of dollars in medical bills, medications and travelling expenses had brought about disappointingly less progress than we had hoped for.

I'd gotten to the point where I felt I was running out of time and options to help my vaccine-injured child. Lacking the background necessary to evaluate doctors' interpretations and recommendations and investing in the endless list of costly and what turned out to be mostly useless lab tests was becoming very frustrating. Dr. Cutler's book gave me the straightforward, scientifically-based, practical information I needed to properly diagnose my son's mercury poisoning and make educated decisions for his treatment. Learning to trust Andy implicity was inevitable when his insight proved to be right time and time again. His book not only helped me to determine the most accurate therapies for my son, but just as importantly, to avoid the potentially dangerous ones as well. The pieces of the puzzle had finally started to fit together.

Dr. Cutler's book is empowering and inspiring. The amazing amount of formidaly comprehensive information, detailed protocols and painstakingly well organized cross referencing made it possible for me to confidently work alone or with minimal support from doctors in treating my child. We achieved more progress in my son in a few months than we had in all the previous years combined. I am forever indebted to Dr. Cutler. His gift has placed my son on the verge of recovery and I trust we will succeed in time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amalgam Illness:Everything you need to know
Amalgam Illness, Diagnosis and Treatment by Andrew Cutler is by far and away the best book on this subject I have read. It not only directs one in making this difficult diagnosis but clearly explains how mercury causes multiple abnormalities in the chemistry of the body. I especially liked the coverage of the effects of mercury on the endocrine system. Mercury's multiple deleterious effects on the body are covered here as are the means to treat this condition. Dr. Cutler explains which treatment strategies are likely to work and which could make the patient worse. The supplements and medications likely to be helpful in treating amalgam illness are clearly enunciated as are the steps those poisoned with mercury need to take to retake control of their lives. At a time when so many people suffer from fatigue, malaise, depression, and diseases of unknown origin for which no specific cause can be pinpointed, the possibility that heavy metal poisoning may be related to their medical conditions needs consideration. With the controversy regarding mercury effects on health coming to the forefront, Dr. Cutler's clear and concise book on the adverse effects of mercury is especially timely. It has detailed descriptions of chemistry and physiology making it valuable reading for the clinician and layman alike. It is well-referenced with excellent diagrams. I would highly recommend it to anyone trying to gain an understanding of the far reaching effects of mercury on the human body.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential knowledge
As so many have eloquently stated in their reviews, I, too, have found this book to be a literal life saver. I've had it since it first came out, and have given it to at least five medical doctors/health practitioners and recommended it to a number of others. I regret not having been one of the first to recommend it; however, I can now relate that I use it as a reference over and over, deepening my understanding of the many aspects of the mercury problems. This knowledge is key to my healing.

The first thing I learned from Andy was to stand my ground with top allopathic and complementary physicians regarding my need for both Armour thyroid, and hydrocortisone, due to the mercury related pituitary problem, (despite their "tests"). So much of his protocol has been so helpful.

I deeply appreciate Andy's generosity of time and effort, to share his knowledge through the book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Start
This is a book I wish had existed a generation ago. It had high and low points. The high points were the voice of acceptance that was being given to explaining Asperger's, which is a neurological condition on the autism spectrum to children. It is a good starter book for sharing with children on the spectrum who continue coping with "undefined differences."

One thing that bothered me was that the writing suggested a "uniform, one size fits all" approach and description of Asperger's. This can be misleading to readers. Still, it was a good faith effort and one that can be used to empower children on the spectrum and explain their "differences" in a clear cut, humane and frank way.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great Child to Child Perspective
This is a great Child to child perspective on AS. It displays some humor while the child voices AS as he sees it from his family.

4-0 out of 5 stars if you've got a young child with AS, get this book
I found this book to be helplful in dealing with other children who will be dealing with my son. We take it into his class on the first day of school and have the teacher read it to his peers so they somewhat understand him and his behaviors. We also read it right after his diagnosis and it helped our son to relate and understand what AS is. I recomend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Textbook on Whiplash Ever
A Tour de Force! Is there going to be a Third Edition? Let us hope so, given Arthur Croft's ability to consume, digest and make palatable to us the most recent research on the topic of whiplash. Fortunately, Dr. Croft is still writing (see his articles in SPINE with co-author Dr. Michael Freeman), and still at the forefront of the profession. As a chiropractic physician, his contributions are all the more important in the medical world, which often borrows from alternative health without crediting it. Not so with Croft, who is credited in medical circles worldwide. A thoroughly readable, well-referenced and enjoyable textbook which will open your mind to a syndrome (group of injuries, really) so misunderstood.

Any physician without this text on his/her shelves should not be treating persons injured by whiplash.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bar None - The best there is
If you are a physician who treats whiplash patients, or an attorney trying to understand the hows and whys, this book is the absolute BEST there is. 'Nuff Said.

5-0 out of 5 stars The True Encyclopedia of Whiplash
Croft and Foreman are to be greatly commended on this work, the BEST in the field of whiplash traumatology. Apparently, there will be a 3rd edition coming soon.

The nonsense coming from Canada this year, including the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) Cassidy study (April 2000) and anything that Robert Ferrari has written, and is likely to write (Whiplash "Encyclopedia"), is an utter shame. The author of the recent NEJM study (Cassidy) has been accused of falsifying data (Emma Bartfay, PhD vs. Cassidy), and the views of QTF and Ferrari on chronic whiplash have been refuted over and over again.

Research in this field is of two types, with one out-weighing the other exponentially: insurance company-sponsored stuff such as Cassidy's, the "Quebec Task Force" or "QTF" study(1995), and much of the Ferrari literature IS VASTLY OUTWEIGHED by the other 95% of the university-based and engineering research that refutes it.

This book, especially in its new edition (pending), is and will be the definitive treatise on whiplash-related injuries. It is not written for the layperson, and covers complex medical topics. However, for physicians and health care professionals working with the whiplash-injured, it is indispensable.

When all the hubbub surrounding the latest weak studies from Canada subsides, Foreman and Croft's work will still be standing tall and unscathed. And that is because these two authors understand the difference between a strong study and a weak one. It is NOT true that you can use the research to prove anything. For example, the April 2000 NEJM study by Cassidy et al. states that when you remove the tort system, whiplash-injured persons miraculously heal faster. But upon closer inspection, it turns out that the authors of this study equate "recovery" with "return to work". They did not report on the physical exam findings of their research subjects at the time of claim closure (so-called "recovery"), so we do NOT really have an honest study.

With Ferrari, he is just so out in left field that one cannot imagine how he survives. The only answer must be that insurance company money is paying for his "research". Is it? Ferrari has been refuted over and over again by Croft and Michael Freeman, DC, PhD, MPH in the literature (see SPINE 1998 and 1999). Ferrari is actually on record as saying that chronic whiplash pain is from a psychological disturbance.

The 1995 QTF study is on record as saying that pain "is not harmful". These are doctors?

Of course, if you have had a brain injury and have been diagnosed with MTBI (mild traumatic brain injury), which is often permanent, there is psychological disturbance. But this is not what Ferrari argues. He basically believes that the millions and millions of chronic whiplash sufferers world-wide are all faking it.

Nikolai Bogduk, one of the top, if not the top, researchers in the world in the study of pain, has conclusively proved that whiplash injuries, even at VERY LOW SPEEDS (less than 5 mph) do damage the cervical zygapophyseal (facet capsules) or "z" joints of the neck, and that those injured in this way have chronic pain, and often full (actually too much) range of motion in their necks. The recent excellent crash tests by Ono, Kanno, Siegmund, Brault, Croft himself, and many, many others all confirm Bogduk's findings in a very conclusive way.

The fact that "researchers" like Cassidy, Ferrari, Russell, and now the NEJM never cite these authors, who are the most respected in the field, is certainly suspect.

I look forward to the next edition of this book, which should address all of the misinformation being propagated by the insurance industry and its representatives (do they fear an even larger class-action suit than big tobacco? You betcha!). Then we can all know the real science, well-written and more thoroughly referenced than any book on whiplash to date. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MARCHING TO YOUR OWN DRUMMER
This is an excellent teaching tool that paves the way towards acceptance of persons who display autistic behavior. Autism and its related neurobiological condition, Asperger's are spectrum conditions. Common spectrum behaviors include a myriad of sensory issues such as strong aversions for loud noises; strong reactions to certain smells and tastes and distinctive speaking styles. Many spectrum behaviors overlap and Asperger's, while considered at the higher end of the autism spectrum does indeed share common neuro-sensory ground with autism.

This book does a heroic job in explaining and addressing these issues to young children. It is a good way of empowering children on and off the spectrum with knowledge that will in turn pave the way to greater acceptance. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was the ice breaker for disclosing diagnosis of AS
It's been over a year since my son and I read this book together, but I am still so happy that I discovered it. I was never quite sure when or how to talk to my son about his diagnosis, but knew that the time was getting close(he was 10 yrs old). After reading this book, which had enough literal and amusing examples that my AS son enjoyed and we both laughed about, my son's only comment was, "I think I'm alot like that kid in the book, except I have friends." I smiled and closed the book. Over the next few days, my son kept referring to the boy in the book, and then point blank one day asked me if he too had Asperger's Syndrome. It was for us a really unexpected and nice way to teach him more about himself and actually using the AS term (as we'd done alot of teaching without using AS in previous years).
I'm here now to buy the sequel! I would recommend this book to children, parents, teachers, and professionals. Each child is different, so I'd recommend that parents read it first and try to imagine how their child would like it (and not just how they felt when reading it).

3-0 out of 5 stars Blue Bottle Mystery:An Asperger's Adventure
We were disappointed, my husband and I both read the book but do not think it would be a good book for our 11 year old (recently diagnosised) with Aspergers Syndrome. It might be a good book to read if you don't have Aspergers and want to understand how an "Aspie" thinks and feels. We don't want him to think he did something wrong because his life doesn't turnout "peachy keen" like the character "Ben's" does. Perhaps we're too protective but it was way too much fantasy and we didn't want our son to end up disappointed. I would recommend the book for introducing Asperger's to classmates of an Aspie.

5-0 out of 5 stars It really rocks!
It really was a good book about an Asperger's adventure and a boy with AS. I'm a 9 yo boy who just got diagnosised with AS, and it was fun to read about a boy with Aspergers. ... Read more
