Product Description
Each year there are approximately 8000 new cases of testicular cancer diagnosed in the United States, resulting in almost 400 deaths. The incidence of testicular cancer, the most common solid tumor in men between the ages of 20 and 35 years, is rising in the United States and Europe. The management of patients with testicular cancer has evolved significantly over the past 25 years, representing a model in the successful multidisciplinary approach to a solid malignancy with the appropriate integration of surgery and cisplatin- based chemotherapy resulting in improvements in survival from 60% to 65% in the 1960's to over 95% at present.Given the high probability of achieving cure, considerable effort has been focused on individualizing therapy for specific patients in an attempt to minimize morbidity, preserve quality of life without adversely impacting survival. This has been possible because of refinements in histologic, serologic, and radiographic parameters which has resulted in improved risk assessment for patients of all stages. Surgical techniques and the development of less toxic and more effective chemotherapy regimens has also played a critical role. The apparent overtreatmentof many patients, and the availability of multiple approaches that achieve cure, has resulted in a number of significant controversies in the management of testicular cancer. The long term survival of patients has identified significant issues that appear to have been underappreciated in the past, such as late relapse, reoperative surgery and the long-term sequelae of treatment, particularly chemotherapy. Some of these problems have prompted us to reexamine and challenge previously accepted treatment paradigms. This issue of the Urologic Clinics of North America describes the current state- of-the-art therapy for testicular cancer and specifically addresses some of the important controversies faced by clinicians today. This has been possible due to the insight and expertise of an exceptional group of distinguished urologists, medical and radiation oncologists, and pathologists. ... Read more

- Kirkus Discoveries

"This powerful narrative of a young man's fight to survive an advanced cancer provides the reader a vivid understanding of the fear, the anguish, the frustration, the anger, and the suffering involved in such a battle...but it is particularly revealing to those who care for cancer patients and provides invaluable insight into the aspects of this disease and what it means to the patient and those who love the patient that are often so private, so hidden."
- Allan R. Fleming, M.D.

"Ian was an inspiration and a delight to all who treated him in his fight with testicular cancer, and his story is one of courage, grace, fear, and hope. Karen McWhirt does a magnificent job of bringing the reader into the experiences lived by her son."

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING
I recently read this book and I couldnt put it down. I work at the University of Kansas Hospital on the heme/onc unit as an RN and see the struggles that cancer patient's go through every day. This story will help me better take care of my patient's and better understand their pain and concerns. This is an excellent insight on a cancer patient's point of view and anyone who takes care of patients on a daily basis needs to read this book. Ian's story is an incredible testimony to the lack of education among our youth about their health. You have to read this book and carry out Ian's wish GET THE WORD OUT!

4-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening
A real eye opener on the daily struggle of cancer treatment. The reality is sometimes hard to digest. The honesty of the writing is not overdone, and is presented in a factual manor without being melodramatic. You have to be in awe of the indomitable human spirit. If this doesn't convince you how badly we need to find a cure, nothing ever will.Have a box of tissues ready.

5-0 out of 5 stars Changed Forever....
Together We Will Win captures your heart from chapter 1 and leads you through the unforgettable journey of this dear family. The realities of this dreaded disease need to be shared with today's young men!The latest and greatest treatment options are dust in the wind unless a young man learns, and is motivated to regularly self-examine and speak up when changes are noticed.

It's up to us, adults/parents, to learn from Ian and pass this book throughout our communities, schools, churches and circles of influence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love True Stories
Pull out your hanky and get ready to cry, learn, and share the experience with others. For anyone who has had cancer, or knows someone who has or had cancer, this story will touch your heart and if you have never had it, this story will touch your heart.

Young men often neglect the hospital, doctors, and in the and that means neglecting their own health. Determined to believe we will never get sick, the day finally comes when we have to face that dreaded truth. How do we handle it? How do we move past it? How do we learn?

This book should be a must-read for the young who think themselves invincible. Life is short and so we have to live it to the fullest, and to do that we need our health. This book shows us to not compromise our health, to remember we are, after all, human.

Knowing is half the battle, once you know, you can take care of it.

Enjoy one man's journey into self-discovery and ultimately healing.

This reference work on prostate and testicular cancers not only offers basic information about recent clinical and experimental developments concerning these tumours, but also features "consensus" reports that present summations of the knowledge and experience of clinicians and scientists working in specific areas of the field. The book thus provides a framework for assessing the clinical relevance and therapeutic potential of the various new developments discussed. Among the specific topics covered by contributors are diagnosis and management of localized prostate cancer; oncogene expression in prostate cancer; biopsy techniques and cytology; management of seminoma; the role of lymph node dissection in testicular cancer, and pathological classifications of testicular tumours. ... Seminomas account for about 30-40 per cent of all testicular tumours. These are usually is found in men in their 30s and 40s. Product Description
This up-to-date and comprehensive set of two CD-ROM discs provides a superb collection of official Federal government documents on testicular cancer: signs and symptoms, diagnosis, lab tests, treatment and management options, and ongoing clinical research. Every aspect of the disease is thoroughly covered. Testicular cancer forms in tissues of the testis (one of two egg-shaped glands inside the scrotum that make sperm and male hormones). Testicular cancer usually occurs in young or middle-aged men. Two main types of testicular cancer are seminomas (cancers that grow slowly and are sensitive to radiation therapy) and nonseminomas (different cell types that grow more quickly than seminomas). Coverage includes treatment, including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, and vaccine therapy. For patients, practical information is provided in clearly written patient education documents. For medical professionals, doctor references and texts have detailed technical information and clinical background material. Documents from the National Cancer Institute, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Medline, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) are included. In addition to disease-specific information, there is extensive coverage of the broad subject of cancer and its prevention and treatment (surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, advanced treatments, managing side effects). There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, and portable - everything you need to know, from the federal sources you trust.Since navigating the Internet to find medical information can be confusing, our exclusive "Guide to Leading Medical Websites 2009" has updated links to the 67 best sites! Product Description
Factual case histories of individuals confronted with life-threatening diseases (prostate and testicular cancer) who overcome it using the Gerson Therapy. These booklets lay no claim to being a scientific document. They present factual case histories for specific types of diseases as well as information about the Gerson Therapy. Here is an excerpt from the preface:"Hence the present series of booklets contains no statistics. What they offer instead is a number of authentic case histories, chosen from a large amount of clinical material. They tell the full, factual human stories of individuals confronted with life-threatening disease and overcoming it on an unorthodox therapy. Their stories may be dismissed by the strictly scientifically-minded as anecdotal evidence, but unless the lessons of such individual experiences are properly evaluated, there can be no hope of true progress in modern medicine's fight against today's killer diseases. Yet progress is badly needed, since some other sets of statistics, those of caner mortality and of the rising tide of new cases, show no sign of improvement. It is time for conventional medicine to search for new paths of healing, and that is what the Gerson Therapy has to offer." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One Lump or Two? A Humourous Story of One Man's Fight Against Testicular Cancer
One man's humorous account of his fight with an embarrassing disease, will also help spread awareness of testicular cancer.
In the first pages, the author acknowledges that cancer is no laughing matter, at the same time reminding us that laughter is good medicine. In the same spirit, he warns that some might be offended by his brash sense of humor. This only makes us want to read more, and he quickly delivers. This book is filled with his jolly, daring jocularity, taking us with him to his doctor's appointments, his treatments, his thoughts about his manhood, his family, his place in the world. We chuckle with him all the way to the introspective end of this book, where he easily guides us into the experience of his own parents' lost battle with cancer, the one chapter that has us reaching for a tissue to wipe the tears. We all relate to this chapter on some level, but we're glad to be there with the author's fond sentiments.
His emotional tale is sure to help spread awareness of testicular cancer and save lives because of it.
A boldly funny, heartfelt, inspirational story.
