Product Description
Thyroid Disorders: A Cleveland Clinic Guide

More than 20 million Americans have thyroid disease, most of them women. In fact, 2 percent of all women will suffer from thyroid disorders at some point in their lives. The thyroid is important because it produces two hormones that help regulate metabolism and control the speed of all cellular activity in the body. If you think of the body as a machine, thyroid hormones determine the rate at which the machine operates. So what happens when this small, butterfly-shaped gland malfunctions? And how can it so suddenly seem to turn against us? Many people don’t even realize when it happens. Often a "silent" problem, thyroid disease affects an estimated 2 million people who are undiagnosed.

This Cleveland Clinic Guide gives thyroid disorder patients what they need most: substantive information from an authoritative source that is trusted by people all over the world—The Cleveland Clinic. The Clinic’s experts view early detection and reduction of risk as vital. This book outlines what anyone must do to reduce their risk of thyroid disorders; for those who have been diagnosed with the disease, it outlines successful treatments. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Outdated book
Don't bother with this book....The info is not up-to-date.I bought it used and cheap, and it still wasn't worth it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative and easy to read
This book has helped me to understand the different types of thyroid diseases better.I'm very glad that it also lay out the risks of certain surgery that some doctors do not highlight. It is written in a manner that is easy to read and not heavy as compare to scientific books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative
This is a really go book for anyone who doesn't know anything about thyroid conditions/diseases.I have had some experience with thyroid problems in the past so a lot of the information contained in the book was not new to me.The best part about the book is that you get detailed information without all the medical jargon. The author is very clear and descriptive about the different types of thyroid conditions, symptoms, common medical treatments, etc.I purchased it because I was hoping for more information on weight management and diet for tyroid patients.Although the book touches on this topic it was not as detailed as I would have liked.Otherwise, I would recommend this book as a guide to walk you through the maze of medical terms and to sort out some of the fact from fiction.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing new here
Why did McGraw-Hill publish this book?It is almost identical (verbatim) to The Complete Thyroid Book except that the latter book includes some additional information. Both books were published in 2005.

I agree with the reviewers that mention how basic this book is.If you're new to learning about thyroid conditions and their treatment, The Complete Thyroid Book is a good starting point.Otherwise check out this book or The Complete Thyroid Book from the library and maybe you'll discover a few helpful tidbits.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Informative
I bought this book after a tough year of thyroid ups and downs. It has empowered me to understand and ask the right questions for a change. So informative but on a level that anyone can understand. After reading my copy, I bought one for my sister, who also has thyroid problems. Her mother-in-law saw it and bought two more copies for friends. Its great for family members of hyper-hypo- thyroid too. It will increase thier understaning. I bought a few books and this was the best, by far! ... Read more

Product Description
The One “Roid” You Should Know All About
No, it’s not the illegal stuff taken by misguided athletes.
It’s not a prescription prescribed by your physician to cure an ailment.

This particular “roid” is actually much more dangerous than all the others combined – especially when it isn’t functioning properly. Give up? It’s the “thyroid.”

This innocuous little gland can be the harbinger of horrible things to come or it can be one of your body’s best friends. It all depends on whether it is functioning in a healthy manner or if it isn’t working properly.

Many people have no idea how important to a healthy body the thyroid is. One of the problems is recognizing the symptoms of thyroid disease. The symptoms can replicate other illnesses, initially making it difficult to diagnose.

Another problem is the variety of symptoms. They run the gambit depending on whether you have a hypothyroid or a hyperthyroid.

Aching muscles to brittle fingernails along with a laundry list of other symptoms could be indicative of Hypothyroidism. If that isn’t confusing enough, a Hyperthyoid can manifest as anxiety, fatigue, bowel problems as well as a host of other problems.

We’ve established that it is difficult to diagnose. The symptoms, if left untreated, can result in serious medical problems up to and including heart disease and death. In other words, it’s not something to mess around with.

What Can You Do?

Well, the first thing you need is answers. You need to learn all the different symptoms of thyroid disease. We named a few above but there are numerous other considerations.

“Understanding the Thyroid” has all the information you need to reach a decision as to whether you need to get medical help. Not only will you get a full list of all the symptoms we touched upon here, you will also learn about many more serious complications.

For example, there is an entire segment on who is at risk for thyroid disease. Also discover what the differences are between the hypo and hyper designations.

Did you know that there is a correlation between a woman’s cycle, here thyroid and fertility? It’s all about balance. This is a must read for women who wish to become pregnant.

Are You a Ticking Time Bomb?

One of the insidious factors at play with thyroid disease is that the symptoms take so long to manifest that you can be in full thyroid disease mode and not really know it.

Learn just how the symptoms can mimic other ailments and why it’s so important to get a proper diagnosis. Joint pains, obesity and infertility are all potential symptoms of other diseases but you may not know to link them thyroid disease.

Early detection is imperative!

That lack of knowledge can be deadly!

Drop whatever you are doing right now. Yes, it’s that important! Grab your copy of “Understanding the Thyroid.”

Hopefully you, or your loved one, will never be diagnosed with thyroid disease. But if you have the slightest inkling that some of the brief symptoms we’ve discussed here might apply to you . . .?

Well, as the old saying goes, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” That couldn’t be truer in this instance.

Who in the heck thought that increased perspiration, accelerated heartbeat or frequent bowel movements could be a sign of hyperthyroidism?

Or that menstrual changes, depression or infrequent bowel movements could point to hypothyroidism.

Did you know that the diet for either form of thyroid disease is totally different? What one should eat for a hyperthyroid is not the same as it is for the hypothyroid. You’ll learn about that inside “Understanding the Thyroid.”

The line between the two forms of thyroid disease is a fine one, but it shouldn’t be ignored. Thyroid disease is complicated. You need to understand it so you or your loved one does not become just another statistic! ... Read more
