Product Description
Alaska Natives have struggled with the "white plague" of tuberculosis for centuries. At last, physician and historian Robert Fortuine brings their story to light. He provides a comprehensive account of tuberculosis from its earliest occurrence in prehistory through the latest outbreaks, made more threatening by HIV/AIDS. Fortuine describes the courage and self-sacrifice of itinerant nurses who endured challenging and often dangerous conditions, as well as the doctors who fought cuts in funding as valiantly as they battled for the lives of their patients.

Fortuine chronicles the heart-breaking removal of tuberculosis victims, many of them children, from their families and villages to hospitals in the Lower 48 states. He describes treatments, medical advances, and day-to-day life for the nurses, physicians, missionaries and teachers who worked to stem the tide that killed and disabled thousands. The struggle against tuberculosis in Alaska is a story of triumph against untold suffering and crippling odds, but it is also a cautionary tale, as villages experience the re-emergence of an increasingly resistant disease in the twenty-first century.

"Must We All Die?" is a timely and encyclopedic contribution to the history of medicine. Historians and health care professionals will hail the volume as a classic. The book is also a tribute to all of those who fought tuberculosis and to the Alaska Natives who endured a cruel disease that destroyed families and ravaged villages. ... Read more

Product Description
In the 1980s and early 1990s, New York City experienced an unprecedented outbreak of tuberculosis. Inadequate healthcare services, an increase in social alienation of the poor, and the emergence of drug-resistant strains led city health officials to respond with draconian policies to ensure compliance, including the use of detention of noninfectious individuals-sometimes for up to two years-that violated individual civil liberties. The New York TB epidemic has since been controlled, but this public health triumph has come at great cost. This gripping narrative of medicine and morality raises ethical issues that are of increasing importance in the world of modern medicine. Richard J. Coker warns the international community against assuming a fortress mentality, advocating a more just balance between health, liberty, and the burdens society should be prepared to accept in the pursuit of both. ... Product Description
Throughout history, tuberculosis has been at or near the top of the list of infectious diseases that have plagued humankind. This pervasive disease has had a central position not only in causing illness but also in challenging medical scientists to understand it - and, in so doing, to further understand all of human health and illness. Pioneers in Medicine and Their Impact on Tuberculosis tells the stories of six of these individuals: Rene Theophile Hyacinthe Laennec (pathology), Heinrich Hermann Robert Koch (bacteriology), Hermann Michael Biggs (public health), Clemens von Pirquet (immunology), Wade Hampton Frost (epidemiology), and Selman Abraham Waksman (antibiotics). It examines not only their contributions in their own fields but also their special work in conquering tuberculosis. Presenting their fascinating lives and the seminal work they did in their disciplines, the author examines the importance of their discoveries and relates them to the dramatic expansion of medical science during the era in which they lived. ... Product Description
Though notorious for its polluted air today, the city of Los Angeles once touted itself as a health resort. After the arrival of the transcontinental railroad in 1876, publicists launched a campaign to portray the city as the promised land, circulating countless stories of miraculous cures for the sick and debilitated. As more and more migrants poured in, however, a gap emerged between the city's glittering image and its dark reality.

In Tuberculosis and the Politics of Exclusion, Emily K. Abel shows how the association of the disease with "tramps" during the 1880s and 1890s and Dust Bowl refugees during the 1930s provoked exclusionary measures against both groups. In addition, public health officials sought not only to restrict the entry of Mexicans (the majority of immigrants) during the 1920s but also to expel them during the 1930s.

Abel's revealing account provides a critical lens through which to view both the contemporary debate about immigration and the U.S. response to the emergent global tuberculosis epidemic. ... Read more

Product Description
The Tuberculosis Movement presents a detailed description of the evolution of the American tuberculosis movement from its inception in the late 19th century to its maturity in 1917. As Teller demonstrates, the tuberculosis movement during this era pioneered many of the methods of contemporary public health--the voluntary association dedicated to eradicating a specific disease, close cooperation between physicians and laity and between public and private agencies, and campaigns of mass public education. The most comprehensive study of the movement to date, this book contains a wealth of information not found in any other history of the campaign against tuberculosis, including full accounts of the backgrounds, motivations, and ideology of the movement's leadership; the origins and activities of the state and local associations and their cooperation with other groups in the fight to control the disease; the educational campaign mounted by the movement's leadership; and public health measures and institutions established to restrict the spread of the disease. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Historical Chronology of Tuberculosis
An illustrated chronicle of tuberculosis briefly and interestingly told in this up-to-date second edition:

Ancient Period (5000 B.C. -- 1600 A.D.)
Pre-Modern Period (1600 -- 1800)
Modern Period I (1800 -- 1881)
Modern Period II (1882 -- Now)

The modern period is divided into two parts: the years before and after Koch's discovery of the tubercle bacillus in 1882

Because the development of our knowledge of tuberculosis closely follows the path of medical progress, periods and some pertinent discoveries in general medical history are included along with a few background items in world history.

About 500 discoveries and events pertaining directly to the history of tuberculosis are given along with their references. This makes available the first selected bibliography embracing the entire subject and is a valuable addition to the book. (The first edition did not have a bibliography).

The book should be of special interest to workers in tuberculosis and public health, particularly, doctors, nurses, social workers, and educators. Tuberculosis patients will find it of interest. As a reference book it should prove to be of value to many physicians and others in the medical sciences.

The purpose of the book is to make readily avialable the significant discoveries and events in the history of tuberculosis along with appropriate references.
