Product Description
This is an up-to-date, comprehensive review of disorders of the vestibular system written by leaders in the field. The book is divided into four parts: basic vestibular mechanisms, clinical evaluation, common vestibular diseases, and treatment of vertigo. Part I reviews the anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system with emphasis on clinically relevant material. Part II describes features in the patient's history, examination, and laboratory evaluation that help the clinician determine the probable site of lesion and likely pathophysiology. The history is emphasized since it is the critical first step for understanding the patient's complaints. Part III covers the differential diagnosis and specific treatments of common neurologic disorders. One chapter provides an overview of the common syndromes seen in neurotology. Pary IV discusses general principles of treatment that are relevant to all vestibular disorders. This book should be useful to all physicians who treat patients complaining of dizziness. It can be used as a text by students entering the field or as a comprehensive source of reference to those in internal medicine, family practice, otolaryngology, neurology, head and neck surgery, and neurosurgery. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Vertigo a challeging symptom
It is a comprehensive book dealing with vestibular physiology and pathology. It covers the possible causes of vestibular disorders and the clinical presentation as well as the differential diagnosis. I found it very helpful as a resident in trying to understand the pathophysiology of vestibular dysfunction. I also found it helpful in classifying the etiology as peripheral versus central. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The whoe story
This book was recommended to me by an aging golf friend who had also experienced the curse of imbalance and resultant diminished ability.

It is as comprehensive a treatment of the condition as can be imagined and it certainly is an asset in the attempt to understand.

No substitute for an M.D. but helpful in communicating.

Recommend.

3-0 out of 5 stars I could've rented this from a public library
I was in a car accident in 2004 and suffered a major whiplash injury. This whiplash injury left me with several symptoms including Cervical Vertigo.I've had this stupid debilitating condition for close to six years now and have been trying to find ways of getting this fixed.I've had numerous tests done and was a guinea pig for medications that either knocked me out or made me more uncoordinated than I already was.Besides searching on the internet for answers I needed other resources and came across this book.My guess is this doctor only dealt with the basics of people who battle bouts of dizziness.I do have to admit that I did find a test that I haven't taken yet.A Fistula test.I came across Perilymph Fistula and it described EVERY symptom that's been going on with me.I nearly cried. After going through this and trying to explain everything that's going on with me Perilymph Fistula describes everything. If I hadn't come across this book I wouldn't have known about these two terms.Hopefully I will be able to get this test done to prove it's what I have and get it fixed. Then I will be able to get my life back!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Doc's Review
This is a most useful text especially if you're new to the diagnosis and management of vestibular disorders. It's easy to read and understand and very applicable.I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars broad coverage, too many typos
The book seems to emphasize more neurology than ENT. There is probably a little too much emphasis on oddball causes of balance difficulty.

I also found a number of editing errors, with occasional confusion of which semicircular canal is involved, and whether there is increased or decreased activity. I don't think this detracts too much from the book, which is still a good review.

From a personal perspective, I would have appreciated more in-depth coverage of test utility.Test results are always mentioned in the cases, but there is little coverage of "pearls and pitfalls" in test interpretation. From experience in using VNG, I find that the results are frequently not straightforward.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book for beginners
I read the first edition twice and still decided to buy the second edition . Case study approach is the best way to learn .
You will never get tired of exploring the cases. You will have gross view of the vertiginous patients and learndifferential diagnosis.Must read for beginners. ... Read more

Product Description
This timely book reflects trends in managing patients with inner ear disease through medical means rather than through surgical treatment. Covering the clinical applications of cutting-edge research, including regenerative medicine for inner ear disease, inner ear perfusion treatments, vestibular rehabilitation for balance retraining, and the use of cochlear implants, this text keeps you abreast of the latest advances and information in the field. You will learn how to diagnose and manage peripheral auditory and vestibular disorders, central vestibular disorders, disorders of the facial nerve, and more. The authors offer insights into the genetics of hearing loss and immune-mediated inner ear disease that help illuminate the underlying principles needed to understand, diagnose and treat dysfunction.

Product Description

An Essential Guide to Hearing and Balance Disorders consolidates the most significant clinical aspects of hearing and balance disorders, ranging from cause and diagnosis to treatment and cure. Experts in various subspecialties of this extensive topic introduce readers to the most sophisticated and state of the art methods of diagnosis and treatment. Each chapter expands on a specific topic area along the continuum of how medical personnel diagnose hearing and balance disorders, to how surgical implantation of the cochlea and rehabilitation can remedy various conditions.

In concise format, the book begins with a case history and follows with comprehensive descriptions of current knowledge regarding fundamental causes of hearing loss and balance disorders, as well as a thorough examination of objective assessment. The latter half of the volume presents specialized treatment and rehabilitative options for various disorders. The chapters in this part cover special topics and conclude with pertinent case studies. Unique areas of discussion in a text of this kind include:

  • genetics of deafness
  • pediatric hearing loss and hearing loss later in life
  • business essentials in audiology private practice
  • professional issues, such as ethics, methods of practice, and conflicts of interest.

As its title implies, this book is critically important for all students and professionals in hearing/balance related disciplines, including audiology, otolaryngology, general medicine, and rehabilitation oriented allied health care occupations.
