Book Description
Vestibular Disorders, Second Edition, uses a case-study approach to outline the principles and practice of the care of patients with dizziness and balance disorders.The text reflects the combined perspectives and experience of a neurologist(Dr. Furman) and a neurotologic surgeon (Dr. Cass). Each case study contains relevant material regarding history, physical examination, laboratory testing, differential diagnosis, and treatment.This material provides a springboard for discussion of either a concept in the field of vestibular disorders or the diagnosis or treatment of a particular disease state.Practical, specific treatment options are discussed throughout the book.For this, the second edition, each of the cases from the first edition has been updated, the background material has been reorganized, and 14 new cases have been added, five of which concern patients with multiple diagnoses.A new part of the book, entitled "Controversial Case Studies," includes ten cases that address a disorder or clinical issue surrounded by a particularly broad range of opinion or uncertainty. Vestibular Disorders, Second Edition aims to span the gap between existing in-depth texts and the problems that arise whenever a patient presents with dizziness. ... Read more

Book Description

The book covers the clinically most relevant central and peripheral ocular motor and vestibular disorders. Clinically-oriented and easy-to-read, it describes how to take the history of a patient suffering from double vision, blurred vision, opscillopsia, vertigo, or dizziness. The procedure for taking the patient history is poorly understood, resulting in late or no diagnosis in many.

The book also provides a detailed description of how to examine the central and peripheral ocular motor system and the central and peripheral vestibular system. It gives examples of the most common disorders using typical case reports, clinical findings, and appropriate treatment options. It also outlines the current practical treatment of ocular motor and vestibular disorders, which includes physical therapy, drug treatment, surgery, as well as psychotherapy.

This concise book will be essential reading for students, general practitioners, and neurologists, as well as ENT specialists in this difficult and complicated area.

Book Description

An Essential Guide to Hearing and Balance Disorders consolidates the most significant clinical aspects of hearing and balance disorders, ranging from cause and diagnosis to treatment and cure. Experts in various subspecialties of this extensive topic introduce readers to the most sophisticated and state of the art methods of diagnosis and treatment. Each chapter expands on a specific topic area along the continuum of how medical personnel diagnose hearing and balance disorders, to how surgical implantation of the cochlea and rehabilitation can remedy various conditions.

In concise format, the book begins with a case history and follows with comprehensive descriptions of current knowledge regarding fundamental causes of hearing loss and balance disorders, as well as a thorough examination of objective assessment. The latter half of the volume presents specialized treatment and rehabilitative options for various disorders. The chapters in this part cover special topics and conclude with pertinent case studies. Unique areas of discussion in a text of this kind include:
*genetics of deafness;
*pediatric hearing loss and hearing loss later in life;
*business essentials in audiology private practice; and
*professional issues, such as ethics, methods of practice, and conflicts of interest.

As its title implies, this book is critically important for all students and professionals in hearing/balance related disciplines, including audiology, otolaryngology, general medicine, and rehabilitation oriented allied health care occupations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Disorders of the Vestibular System is a first rate source
This is an up-to-date, comprehensive review of disorders of the vestibular system written by leaders in the field. The book is divided into four parts: basic vestibular mechanisms, clinical evaluation, common vestibular diseases, and treatment of vertigo. Part I reviews the anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system with emphasis on clinically relevant material. Part II describes features in the patient's history, examination, and laboratory evaluation that help the clinician determine the probable site of lesion and likely pathophysiology. The history is emphasized since it is the critical first step for understanding the patient's complaints. Part III covers the differential diagnosis and specific treatments of common neurologic disorders. One chapter provides an overview of the common syndromes seen in neurotology. Part IV discusses general principles of treatment that are relevant to all vestibular disorders. This book should be useful to all physicians who treat patients complaining of dizziness. It can be used as a text by students entering the field or as a comprehensive source of reference to those in internal medicine, family practice, otolaryngology, neurology, head and neck surgery, and neurosurgery.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vertigo a challeging symptom
It is a comprehensive book dealing with vestibular physiology and pathology. It covers the possible causes of vestibular disorders and the clinical presentation as well as the differential diagnosis. I found it very helpful as a resident in trying to understand the pathophysiology of vestibular dysfunction. I also found it helpful in classifying the etiology as peripheral versus central. ... Product Description
HEALTH / THERAPY / VESTIBULAR / PATIENT HANDOUTS.

Balance disorders and dizziness are among the most common reasons for falls to occur in our aging population. It is estimated that almost 85% of these falls involve the vestibular system. However, with correct assessment and proper treatment (Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy), first falls and repeat falls can be prevented for balance-disordered people.

Dr. Marian Girardi has studied and compiled important data to assess and treat vestibular disfunctions. She has documented and grouped this valuable information into an easy-to-understand format to include:

 Anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system.
 Identifying the patient with vestibular problems.
 Assessment tools for vestibular diagnosis.
 Risk and safety factors for falls.
 Treatment using VRT (Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy).
 VRT exercises for vision, head and eye movements to improve and maintain long-term balance and gait.
 22 reproducible patient handouts for easy duplication.

A valuable resource book for healthcare students, therapists, and professionals. ... Read more
