3-0 out of 5 stars The bookby itself is good,BUT how can anybody practice MATH without an answer key !!
Hi All,
I bought this book after reading a review that the practice book had answers at the back. It turned to be wrong...Please do not write wrong info, any1.
The book by itself is good for Algebra practice if the kid or whoever is learning it has an expert guide or teacher available offhand. Without the answer key, it would be impossible for a novice learner to ever know if he got the wrongor right answer!!
Go for the book if you are confident of your Algebra skills... I bought this book as a supplement with the original Textbook.... it is same chapter by chapter.I have some help.

The book got here -DAYS- before the delivery estimate. It is in the condition described and I will surely get plenty of use out of it.

Great seller, will use again.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the book I ordered
This book is a good algebra book but if is not the book I ordered. It was sent to me by the vender knowing it was not the book I ordered. They must have known that I would not sent it back because it was not worth the trouble. However they did advertise that they had the book in their inventory when I ordered it,and then sent me a book they had in inventory. I sent them an email stating that I wanted them to send me the correct book but they never responded.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for a great price.
As a parent, buying text books for my kids can be expensive and frustrating. It is easy to spend a ton on text books.Buying this very usable book and having it shipped to my home in less than a week for less than $20.00 made my day.

Product Description
The four real division algebras (reals, complexes, quaternionsand octonions) are the most obvious signposts to a rich and intricaterealm of select and beautiful mathematical structures. Using the newtool of adjoint division algebras, with respect to which the divisionalgebras themselves appear in the role of spinor spaces, some of thesestructures are developed, including parallelizable spheres, exceptional Lie groups, and triality. In the case of triality the useof adjoint octonions greatly simplifies its investigation. Motivatingthis work, however, is a strong conviction that the design of ourphysical reality arises from this select mathematical realm. Acompelling case for that conviction is presented, a derivation of thestandard model of leptons and quarks.
The book will be of particular interest to particle and high energytheorists, and to applied mathematicians.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mathematics behind physics
This is an excellent book for those who want to study Hamilton's quaternions, and other algebraic structures, used in modern physics. Dixon believes that octonions and triality of Spin(8) are essential in understanding particle physics. This clear exposition contains many ideas which have gone unnoticed from other researchers. The book is a treasure trove for mathematical physicists. The author also compares the Cayley algebra of octonions to other algebraic systems used in physics: matrices and Clifford algebras, in particular the Dirac algebra. ... Read more

Product Description

Matrix algebra is one of the most important areas of mathematics for data analysis and for statistical theory. This much-needed work presents the relevant aspects of the theory of matrix algebra for applications in statistics. It moves on to consider the various types of matrices encountered in statistics, such as projection matrices and positive definite matrices, and describes the special properties of those matrices. Finally, it covers numerical linear algebra, beginning with a discussion of the basics of numerical computations, and following up with accurate and efficient algorithms for factoring matrices, solving linear systems of equations, and extracting eigenvalues and eigenvectors.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm not sure why no one else has reviewed this book yet -- it's served me well
I am not a real mathematician or hard core numeric analyst; my formal training is lacking, and maybe that's why I don't gravitate to Dennis Bernstein's text or others like it.I have managed to get past the very basics (rank, determinants, permanents, spectral decomposition, Jordon normal form) and come to appreciate the numeric issues involved in computing (or, more to the point, avoiding the computation of) inverses and pseudoinverses. The theory is less interesting to me than, or at least is primarily in service of, the applications. James Gentle's treatment of how numeric computing is actually done serves as useful context which I found missing in some more theoretical texts, and glossed over by some introductory texts.I guess that's why I keep coming back to it.It serves my personal needs.I find it surprisingly readable; diagrams are used as needed, and its index is good.

Perhaps I am simply in a sort of limbo, where this intermediate (?) linear algebra text is something I might eventually outgrow.(When that might happen, I'm sure I don't know)Experienced numeric analysts seem to prefer treatments like Bernstein, Horn, or Golub & Van Loan, while the SIAM text by Meyer or the classic textbooks by Strang are probably better introductions. This book is clearly slanted towards statisticians, and more than that, statisticians who find themselves operating on large datasets, perhaps without a rigorous math background. It was invaluable to me when I had to implement my own GLM engine (for reasons too boring to discuss here, I couldn't use GPLed software). You don't really need it to peck at R, for example, but if you go to scale up a piece of code in C++ or similar, it will be much more difficult if you haven't digested this material.(I find Jorge Nocedal's "Numeric Optimization" to be an extremely useful companion to Gentle's book)

It's cheaper (on Amazon, at least), and to my mind more coherent, than any of the other texts I have listed above. Our university library is superb, so I've checked out all of them, and I own Meyer's book.(It was very useful for me to get started and I wish I'd had it when I took p-chem)But now Gentle's book is the one on my desk (library sticker and all -- I still haven't bought it, though I've had it out on loan for something like 10 months now).I doubt that a physicist will learn anything new from it, but a CS student might.Gentle has a newer textbook out on Computational Statistics, so depending on your focus, that may be of equal or greater value to you.I can just read papers (or look for implementations) if I need specific solutions; this book helps me organize different methods by theme, and provides just enough rigor for me to maintain mathematical context.

If you are in a similar situation, I think you'll find this book to be a valuable resource.I have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Linear Algebra with applications by leon
This is a good linear algebra book for those who are a little bit more advanced, and who have a good background in the language of mathematics.
This book has a theoretical emphasis rather than applicable on a chapter to chapter basis even thought that it is title with applications because it does contain applications of the theory in every chapters, actually it contains lots of applications, but the actual teaching of the theory is more theoretical than other books. Is a very good book, but if you are buying a book to learn the basics of linear algebra this one might be a little confusing for the reader that does not contain a solid math background.
In other words it is a book written for students with a little bit more mathematical maturity. perhaps for students at the junior level of a mathematical bachelor, rather than for the engineers.
But it is a great book with "proofs" and "applications" is great. ... Read more

Product Description
Praise for the first edition

"This book is clearly written and presents a large number of examples illustrating the theory . . . there is no other book of comparable content available. Because of its detailed coverage of applications generallyneglected in the literature, it is a desirable if not essential addition to undergraduate mathematics and computer science libraries."
–CHOICE

As a cornerstone of mathematical science, the importance of modern algebra and discrete structures to many areas of science and technology is apparent and growing–with extensive use in computing science, physics, chemistry, and data communications as well as in areas of mathematics such as combinatorics.

Blending the theoretical with the practical in the instruction of modern algebra, Modern Algebra with Applications, Second Edition provides interesting and important applications of this subject–effectively holding your interest and creating a more seamless method of instruction.

Incorporating the applications of modern algebra throughout its authoritative treatment of the subject, this book covers the full complement of group, ring, and field theory typically contained in a standard modern algebra course. Numerous examples are included in each chapter, and answers to odd-numbered exercises are appended in the back of the text.

Chapter topics include:

  • Boolean Algebras
  • Polynomial and Euclidean Rings
  • Groups
  • Quotient Rings
  • Quotient Groups
  • Field Extensions
  • Symmetry Groups in Three Dimensions
  • Latin Squares
  • Pólya—Burnside Method of Enumeration
  • Geometrical Constructions
  • Monoids and Machines
  • Error-Correcting Codes
  • Rings and Fields

In addition to improvements in exposition, this fully updated Second Edition also contains new material on order of an element and cyclic groups, more details about the lattice of divisors of an integer, and new historical notes.

Filled with in-depth insights and over 600 exercises of varying difficulty, Modern Algebra with Applications, Second Edition can help anyone appreciate and understand this subject. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good supplemental book
I just bought this title after having the second edition checked out from university library most of the semester. Be careful not to confuse the two: Amazon's system didn't make it clear that this was the edition being sold. Both are fine books and the first ed is a steal at the price it is commonly offered at, but the the second ed is quite a bit more concise with a second author contributing to the updated materials. This version seems to have considerably more material dedicated to applications, and would be a good additional reference to have on hand whether for introductory abstract algebra at the undergrad level or grad, or an applications course.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best modern algebra text I have seen
It has been some time since I taught a course in modern algebra, but if I were to teach it again, I would use this book. The first chapter covers the basics of binary operations and algebraic structures. Seven pages in length, it is a basic overview of what the students should already know. Chapter two covers what is arguably the simplest abstract algebra, Boolean algebra. Propositional logic, switching circuits, posets and lattices are the examples used. I am in strong agreement with the introduction of switching circuits this early in a course. It is an application of abstract algebra that students can easily understand and relate to. Switching circuits also immediately demonstrates that the inclusion of "with applications" in the title is not a misnomer.
Basic group theory is the topic of chapter three, quotient and symmetry groups are covered in chapters four and five. The Polya-Burnside method of enumeration is the topic of chapter five, monoids and machines the focus of chapter seven, rings, fields, polynomial, Euclidean and quotient rings are examined in chapters eight, nine and ten. Field extensions are covered in chapter eleven, Latin squares in chapter twelve, geometrical constructions in chapter thirteen and error-correcting codes in chapter fourteen.
The exposition is excellent, it is one of the more readable texts in advanced mathematics that you will find. There are many examples of the applications of modern algebra to the real world and a large number of exercises are included at the end of the chapters. Solutions to the odd numbered exercises are found in an appendix.
Modern algebra is a difficult topic due to the abstract nature of the material. It is easy for students to get confused and lost when they are studying the book on their own. The risk of that is minimized if they are reading this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars important computer applications
This book is pitched at the level of a third or fourth undergraduate year in maths, or at a graduate level course. Gilbert assumes a solid background in maths, especially linear algebra. He expounds on groups and rings.

You can certainly treat this book as a pure maths text on algebra. But there is a twist to it, for some of you. He discusses applications in engineering. Notably Boolean algebra. Boolean logic forms the conceptual and practical basis of computer hardware and software. Gilbert shows how to represent a Boolean expression in a normal form and how to simplify it. Very practical and vital to circuit design.

Later on in the book, he gives a good but all too brief discussion of finite state machines. These can be used in control systems and even in the construction of computer languages like Java. Where the Java bytecode can be validated precisely because Java is a finite state machine.

Finally, error correcting codes take up an entire chapter. Important in communications theory, and even in such common items as storing information on computer media like DVDs. ... Read more

Product Description

Linear algebra is relatively easy for students during the early stages of the course, when the material is presented in a familiar, concrete setting. But when abstract concepts are introduced, students often hit a brick wall. Instructors seem to agree that certain concepts (such as linear independence, spanning, subspace, vector space, and linear transformations), are not easily understood, and require time to assimilate. Since they are fundamental to the study of linear algebra, students' understanding of these concepts is vital to their mastery of the subject. Lay introduces these concepts early in a familiar, concrete Rn setting, develops them gradually, and returns to them again and again throughout the text so that when discussed in the abstract, these concepts are more accessible.

This book is just okay. It's not the easiest or most exciting read in the world, and it helps to have a good instructor to understand the material.I wouldn't recommend it, yet I wouldn't banish it either.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lay Linear Algebra
Lay's linear algebra follows a good teaching format as it introduces systems of equations and matricies in the first few chapters and then relates the abstract constructs of linear algebra like vector spaces after the student has already grasped the basics of linear algebra's uses. This allows the student to understand the abstract concepts more easily when they come up.
