Product Description
The emergence of fuzzy logic and its applications has dramatically changed the face of industrial control engineering. Over the last two decades, fuzzy logic has allowed control engineers to meet and overcome the challenges of developing effective controllers for increasingly complex systems with poorly defined dynamics. Today's engineers need a working knowledge of the principles and techniques of fuzzy logic-Intelligent Control provides it.The author first introduces the traditional control techniques and contrasts them with intelligent control. He then presents several methods of representing and processing knowledge and introduces fuzzy logic as one such method. He highlights the advantages of fuzzy logic over other techniques, indicates its limitations, and describes in detail a hierarchical control structure appropriate for use in intelligent control systems. He introduces a variety of applications, most in the areas of robotics and mechatronics but with others including air conditioning and process/production control. One appendix provides discussion of some advanced analytical concepts of fuzzy logic, another describes a commercially available software system for developing fuzzy logic application.Intelligent Control is filled with worked examples, exercises, problems, and references. No prior knowledge of the subject nor advanced mathematics are needed to comprehend much of the book, making it well-suited as a senior undergraduate or first-year graduate text and a convenient reference tool for practicing professionals. ... Product Description
Moving through an increasingly complex world, the narrators and characters in these poems often employ a "fuzzy logic" based on conditions and situations, rather than a strict true or false of the traditional syllogism. But the term "fuzzy logic' has another connotation here.In a shadowy world of fleeting half-truths, where masks and personas are often assumed, very often, it's logic tempered by the unconscious urge, the irrational will, influenced by trauma and past mis-education, that helps form the final decision, for better or for worse. It's in both meanings of the term that the characters in these poems exhibit a fuzzy logic in everyday life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise
Buckley and Eslami's notation and some of their ideas on fuzzy sets might go deeper than many others.I've found this book intriguing to say the least. You'll find this a very concise "no-nonsense" sort of math book.Ideas get explained in a few sentences or in a few paragraphs, and then come the exercises! And you'll find even more new ideas, not mentioned in the reading, in the exercises.I do like this sort of style of learning mathematics, because it actively gets you involved.
This book and others on fuzzy set theories do require a decent understaning of crisp set theory. So, if one hasn't taken a course or read a book on crisp set theory you might want to check out a copy of Seymour Lipschutz's Schaum's Outline "Theory and Problems of Set Theory."Knowing some basic calculus will also help. Some advantages of this book lie in that it helps one to separate the idea of fuzzy intersections and fuzzy unions from the standard and useful idea of t-norms and t-conorms.Sections on fuzzy geometry, fuzzy trignometry also seem interesting as these ideas have not yet gotten much development.
I think I've detected a potential error in the text in that it gives an integral for an equation that had to have had part of the integral as negative. But, this seems relatively minor. The book could easily get improved if the author(s) provided solved examples of their exercises, or at least answers.Something like a Schaum's Outline of Fuzzy Set Theory would be an excellent idea!
I appreciate simple things in this text like the authors not saying "prove this truth table..." and instead saying "prove or disprove...", and not saying "prove" in general, but rather saying "show". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars From an Industrial Practitioner of Process Measurement & Control
An excellent option if you are looking for business and industry examples and applications of Fuzzy Logic.

If you are looking for more in-depth knowledge and theory about Fuzzy Logic you should consider "The Fuzzy Systems Handbook: A Practitioner's Guide to Building, Using, & Maintaining Fuzzy Systems" by the same author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hands on fuzzy logic book
This book compliments The Fuzzy Systems Handbook very well. (BTW, The Fuzzy Systems Handbook, also by Earl Cox, is one of the most usable Fuzzy Logic books that I have on my bookshelf)The practical examples in Fuzzy Logic for Business and Industry, provide users with tools to implement Fuzzy Logic in real world applications. If you want a book explaining Fuzzy Logic principles, this is not the book for you. If you want to get insight into the application of Fuzzy Logic in business scenarios, this is a very worthwhile starting point.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the Fuzzy Logic Handbook
In this book the concepts of Fuzzy Logic are outlined reasonably well, but emphasis is put on the so called 'applicability' of fuzzy reasoning in business applications. By working through several business examples in depth, a fair coverage of the topic is provided. The step by step description of the fuzzy process is a bonus towards understanding how the model arrives at it's end results.

However, compared with the Fuzzy Logic Handbook, this book relies too heavily on the examples. It lacks the clear description of some of the underlying mathematics and their relevance provided in the Handbook aswell as a solid foundation of the principles of fuzzy logic.

On the other hand, this book provides long and detailed examples that can be usefull in combination with the sometimes short descriptions provided in the Handbook.

If you are looking for a good introduction into Fuzzy Logic, this is not the right book, if however you are somewhat familiar with the principles and want to see for yourself how fuzzy logic works, this book provides some nicely worked out examples. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lancing the boils
Nothing is more fascinating than to follow a lively mind poking about for curiosities. And nobody had a livelier mind than Martin Gardner.

The Oklahoma philosopher played with ideas as varied as the background to Lewis Carroll and mathematical games and brain-teasers.

Other writers, too, have been interested in "Alice in Wonderland" and in brainteasers. Gardner was a unique national asset because of the effort he expended on cranks.

For many years, a main outlet for his inquiries was Skeptical Inquirer magazine, the journal of what used to be the Center for the Scientific Investigation of the Paranormal and is now just PSICOP. Sixteen of his "Notes of a Fringe-Watcher" columns are reprinted in "Weird Water & Fuzzy Logic," along with almost 50 book reviews.

He gives most attention to repressed memory therapy and false memory syndrome.

The explosion of claims by adults that they were sexually abused as children is called "the greatest scandal of the century in American psychology." Gardner does not deny that there are many case of unreported child sexual abuse -- who would dare? -- but he does contend that these cases are hidden, not forgotten.

His book was written well before the revelations of sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests. What we learned from that tends to confirm Gardner's opinion.

Already, he wrote, a vast industry of memory creators was at work. It includes -- it is with us yet -- therapists, most with dubious or non-existent credentials; gullible cops and social workers; and prosecutors run amok. Gardner does not say so, but in some of the worst witchhunts, it seems pretty clear that prosecutors pushing these cases were deranged.

What else can explain going to court with cases of horrible physical assaults that children describe, but which leave not a mark on their bodies?

The claims of the people who believe these wild tales are not noted for the rigor of their evidence, and the repressed memory people are heavily cross-fertilized with believers in alien abductions and satanic cults, for which evidence is equally lacking.

Hundreds of people already have been imprisoned by these witchhunts and more hundreds have had their lives ruined.

A lot of what Gardner writes about is more goofy than anything else, but false memory syndrome is another matter altogether. In recommending Lawrence Wright's book "Remembering Satan," which recounts a monstrous Washington case, Gardner states solemnly: "It is a book every American should read. Someday you may be called for jury duty on a repressed-memory case that can result in terrible injustice unless you and your fellow-jurors are adequately informed."

Usually, however, Gardner is involved in realms where the looniness is comparatively harmless. These include a famous case in which scads of Ph.D.s in mathematics made fools of themselves over a fairly simple problem in logic, Margaret Mead's humbug in Samoa and a collection of scientific blunders in novels.

The blunders are original compilations by Gardner; many of the other columns are simply charmingly retold exposes done by others, such as Derek Freeman's destruction of Mead's reputation.

For those who delighted in these pieces in Skeptical Inquirer, the book version is even better, because it includes the responses of the wounded and bellowing pedagogues whom Gardner has skewered.

One was set off by his review in Book World magazine of a life of Joseph Campbell, who is revealed as a sap and an anti-Semite. The bellows of the Campbellites were loud indeed.

Few of us would ever have heard of Campbell, a shabby pretender, if it had not been for the drumbeating on public television by that ignorant hedge-preacher Billy D. Moyers. Gardner uncharacteristically passes up a chance to heave a harpoon into Moyers' sleek hide.

Too bad. That would have generated more letters and more fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only a dupe could review this book negatively

Fantastic book, nearly ever essay a clear and brillant piece attacking superstition and blatant pseudoscience

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
The positive emphasis of this compilation - that any and all claims are best meticulously and exactingly examined in an organized manner - is disappointingly marred by Martin Gardner's shallow knowledge and research of the topics he seeks to debunk. ... Read more

Product Description
These are exciting times in the fields of Fuzzy Logic and the Semantic Web, and this book will add to the excitement, as it is the first volume to focus on the growing connections between these two fields. This book is expected to be a valuable aid to anyone considering the application of Fuzzy Logic to the Semantic Web, because it contains a number of detailed accounts of these combined fields, written by leading authors in several countries. The Fuzzy Logic field has been maturing for forty years. These years have witnessed a tremendous growth in the number and variety of applications, with a real-world impact across a wide variety of domains with humanlike behavior and reasoning. And we believe that in the coming years, the Semantic Web will be major field of applications of Fuzzy Logic.

This book, the first in the new series Capturing Intelligence, shows the positive role Fuzzy Logic, and more generally Soft Computing, can play in the development of the Semantic Web, filling a gap and facing a new challenge. It covers concepts, tools, techniques and applications exhibiting the usefulness, and the necessity, for using Fuzzy Logic in the Semantic Web. It finally opens the road to new systems with a high Web IQ.

Most of today's Web content is suitable for human consumption. The Semantic Web is presented as an extension of the current web in which information is given well-defined meaning, better enabling computers and people to work in cooperation. For example, within the Semantic Web, computers will understand the meaning of semantic data on a web page by following links to specified ontologies. But while the Semantic Web vision and research attracts attention, as long as it will be used two-valued-based logical methods no progress will be expected in handling ill-structured, uncertain or imprecise information encountered in real world knowledge. Fuzzy Logic and associated concepts and techniques (more generally, Soft Computing), has certainly a positive role to play in the development of the Semantic Web. Fuzzy Logic will not supposed to be the basis for the Semantic Web but its related concepts and techniques will certainly reinforce the systems classically developed within W3C.

In fact, Fuzzy Logic cannot be ignored in order to bridge the gap between human-understandable soft logic and machine-readable hard logic. None of the usual logical requirements can be guaranteed: there is no centrally defined format for data, no guarantee of truth for assertions made, no guarantee of consistency. To support these arguments, this book shows how components of the Semantic Web (like XML, RDF, Description Logics, Conceptual Graphs, Ontologies) can be covered, with in each case a Fuzzy Logic focus.

4-0 out of 5 stars automation to build the Semantic Web?
Sanchez suggests that in order to build out the Semantic Web, the use of fuzzy logic will be inevitable. The Semantic Web is an attempt to use primarily automated methods, that mostly still have to be devised, to "understand" web pages. The problem is that these pages are geared towards human wetware comprehension. And pages are often badly cast, with typos and just different uses of the same terminology. Due to the impreciseness of any human written language.

To analyse these, the papers in the book offer fuzzy approaches. Instead of using binary valued logic. A very promising direction that may prove fruitful.

The book also contains a keynote paper by Lotfi Zadeh, the founder of fuzzy logic. This paper looks at the search problem. One which has already made Google into one of the great computer companies. Zadeh considers how searching can be improved, beyond the now standard link analysis pioneered by Google. ... Read more

Product Description
Probabilists and fuzzy enthusiasts tend to disagree about which philosophy is best and they rarely work together. As a result, textbooks usually suggest only one of these methods for problem solving, but not both. This book, with contributions from 15 experts in probability and fuzzy logic, is an exception. The contributing authors, investigators from both fields, have combined their talents to provide a practical guide showing that both fuzzy logic and probability have their place in the world of problem solving. They work together with mutual benefit for both disciplines, providing scientists and engineers with examples of and insight into the best tool for solving problems involving uncertainty.

Fuzzy Logic and Probability Applications: Bridging the Gap makes an honest effort to show both the shortcomings and benefits of each technique, and even demonstrates useful combinations of the two. It provides clear descriptions of both fuzzy logic and probability, as well as the theoretical background, examples, and applications from both fields, making it a useful hands-on workbook for members of both camps. It contains enough theory and references to fundamental work to provide firm ground for both engineers and scientists at the undergraduate level and above. Readers should have a familiarity with mathematics through calculus.

Use of this book is not restricted to a specific course or application. It can be used in teaching probability, fuzzy logic, general problem solving, or in any course in which probability and fuzzy logic are not normally taught together. It has applications in control theory and artificial intelligence, knowledge acquisition/management, and risk/reliability analysis.

Product Description
Fuzzy Logic for Embedded Systems Applications, by a recognized expert in the field, covers all the basic theory relevant to electronics design, with particular emphasis on embedded systems, and shows how the techniques can be applied to shorten design cycles and handle logic problems that are tough to solve using conventional linear techniques. All the latest advances in the field aree discussed and practical circuit design examples presented.

Fuzzy logic has been found to be particularly suitable for many embedded control applications. The intuitive nature of the fuzzy-based system design saves engineers time and reduces costs by shortening product development cycles and making system maintenance and adjustments easier. Yet despite its wide acceptance-and perhaps because of its name-it is still misunderstood and feared by many engineers. There is a need for embedded systems designers-both hardware and software-to get up to speed on the principles and applications of fuzzy logic in order to ascertain when and how to use them appropriately.

Fuzzy Logic for Embedded Systems Applications provides practical guidelines for designing electronic circuits and devices for embedded systems using fuzzy-based logic. It covers both theory and applications with design examples.

* Unified approach to fuzzy electronics from an engineering point of view
* Easy to follow with plenty of examples
* Review and evaluation of free resources ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very misleading title
The book covers a lot of topics, of which one is fuzzy logic. If your aim is to implement a fuzzy controller in an embedded system, this book will not help you. It does not cover enough theory to be interesting if you want to really understand fuzzy systems, and it is not practical enough to allow you to make a fuzzy system without understanding the theory.
The book also talks about neural networks, in the same style. Not enough math for the theory savvy and not enough practical information for the "want to play with it" types.
In addition, the book often goes on tangents that are of minimal interest for most embedded system designers. If you want to learn how a fuzzy system controls your washing machine or your camera's autofocus (typical embedded fuzzy applications) it is very little use for you to learn about different current mirror circuits used in analog integrated circuit design or how to use the multi-collector bipolar transistor topology to design a current driven fuzzy AND gate on a VLSI chip.

This book is good if you want to grasp the concepts related to fuzzy logic and neural networks, and are keen on reading all sorts of interesting tidbits of related technology. On the other hand, it is pretty useless if you want to learn what the title suggests, that is, how to use and/or implement fuzzy logic in embedded system applications.

On the positive side, the book contains huge amounts of references and pointers to sites and papers where you can actually find information about fuzzy logic for embedded system applications.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very clear and easy to understand. Deep enough without heavy math.
Very good for beginners and intermediate on Fuzzy Logic and for those who want or need to start learning about it. Light math just enough for explain the concepts without going into deep theory. Practical book with a lot of references to other resources just in case you want to go serious. It includes a CD with the book on .pdf and a couple of demo softwares if you are a hands-on guy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading Title
"A First Look at Fuzzy Logic and Neural Networks..." might be a lot more accurate. It does a good job of covering the concepts. What it doesn't do is address any of the issues of implementing a fuzzy system in an embedded environment. If you don't know what a fuzzy set is then you should consider this book. If you want some tips or ideas for creating an inference engine for an 8 or 16 bit processor I suggest you look elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fuzzy Logic for Embedded Systems Applications
The book is written in a language that makes it accessible to beginners in the field of fuzzy logic as well as experts, since it contains top notch research on the state of the art of the topic.
Embedded system design using fuzzy logic algorithms is made easy through practical examples.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book. If you want a concise, well written book that is not overbearing and is actually very user friendly and you are interested in fuzzy logic application algorithms this is your book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much padding, too many typos
While this book does provide a reasonable overview, I found it rather disappointing.

It has too many errors. With highly technical material, it is imperative that the information is correct or else you can't trust it. For example a minus instead of a plus does not help when explaining terminology.

Only half the book is really about fuzzy logic. There is far too much padding eg. 1.large diagrams showing Moore's Law and the layers in an IC gate. These are not subjects that should be covered in a book on fuzzy logic and one is forced to conclude that the author had a page quota to be reached and did it by adding these secions and large verbose reference sections.

A worked example or an appendix showing an algorithm in C would have been far more useful.

The book brings a major paradigm shift to medical sciences exploring the use of fuzzy sets in epidemiology and medical diagnosis arena. The volume addresses the most significant topics in the broad areas of epidemiology, mathematical modeling and uncertainty, embodying them within the framework of fuzzy set and dynamic systems theory.

Written by leading contributors to the area of epidemiology, medical informatics and mathematics, the book combines a very lucid and authoritative exposition of the fundamentals of fuzzy sets with an insightful use of the fundamentals in the area of epidemiology and diagnosis. The content is clearly illustrated by numerous illustrative examples and several real world applications. Based on their profound knowledge of epidemiology and mathematical modeling, and on their keen understanding of the role played by uncertainty and fuzzy sets, the authors provide insights into the connections between biological phenomena and dynamic systems as a mean to predict, diagnose, and prescribe actions. An example is the use of Bellman-Zadeh fuzzy decision making approach to develop a vaccination strategy to manage measles epidemics in São Paulo.

The book offers a comprehensive, systematic, fully updated and self- contained treatise of fuzzy sets in epidemiology and diagnosis. Its content covers material of vital interest to students, researchers and practitioners and is suitable both as a textbook and as a reference. The authors present new results of their own in most of the chapters. In doing so, they reflect the trend to view fuzzy sets, probability theory and statistics as an association of complementary and synergetic modeling methodologies.

Product Description

In today’s increasingly complex and uncertain business environment, financial analysis is yet more critical to business managers who tackle problems of an economic or business nature. Knowledge based on formal logic and even experience becomes less sufficient. This volume systematically sets out the basic elements on which to base financial analysis for business in the new century. It incorporates a previous work that can serve as the basis and foundation for the new contributions that are now being made in the field of financial economy and intend to provide business with instruments and models suitable for dealing with the new economic context. In dealing with rapid and unpredictable changes in technological and business conditions, it postulates a growing reliance on the opinions of experts instead of past data or probabilistic forecasts, which is a radical change but may yield fruitful results. For this reason, much emphasis is devoted to the problem of aggregation of the opinion of experts in the financial field, with the object of limiting, wherever possible, the subjective component of the opinions and making sure that the decisions have the best guarantee of reaching the desired objectives.

Product Description
In the early 1970s, fuzzy systems and fuzzy control theories added a new dimension to control systems engineering. From its beginnings as mostly heuristic and somewhat ad hoc, more recent and rigorous approaches to fuzzy control theory have helped make it an integral part of modern control theory and produced many exciting results. Yesterday's"art" of building a working fuzzy controller has turned into today's"science" of systematic design. To keep pace with and further advance the rapidly developing field of applied control technologies, engineers, both present and future, need some systematic training in the analytic theory and rigorous design of fuzzy control systems. Introduction to Fuzzy Sets, Fuzzy Logic, and Fuzzy Control Systems provides that training by introducing a rigorous and complete fundamental theory of fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic, and then building a practical theory for automatic control of uncertain and ill-modeled systems encountered in many engineering applications. The authors proceed through basic fuzzy mathematics and fuzzy systems theory and conclude with an exploration of some industrial application examples.Almost entirely self-contained, Introduction to Fuzzy Sets, Fuzzy Logic, and Fuzzy Control Systems establishes a strong foundation for designing and analyzing fuzzy control systems under uncertain and irregular conditions. Mastering its contents gives students a clear understanding of fuzzy control systems theory that prepares them for deeper and broader studies and for many practical challenges faced in modern industry. ...
