2-0 out of 5 stars Basic book of magic squares
This book is very basic and does not have many of the standard squares one might expect to find in it
It is very lacking compared to Magic Squares and Cubes [Paperback], by W. S. Andrews

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware- this is NOT new material!
Although this is interesting material on magic squares, and the page above says it is copyright 2005, it is NOT new material on magic squares. Instead, it is a chapter extracted from the book "Mathematical Recreations and Essays" by W.W. Rouse Ball. Nowhere on the Amazon page does it tell the potential buyer this. Although probably legal, it is certainly irksome for those of us who want to read everything on a subject to order what seems to be new material only to find it is a reprint from a book I already own. I urge the publisher, and the Amazon staff to warn readers that this is a reprint and tell us where it is from so we can make an informed decision as to whether we want to spend another $12 for a chapter we may already own. PS: if you do NOT already own the book, this IS great info on magic sqaures. My complaint, and low review, is not with the material but with the deceptive advertising. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I was disappointed
After waiting a year while the paperback version was backordered/unavailable, I decided to get the hardcover. For me, this was a waste of $20. I was hoping to find some mathematical insights into the phenomenon of magic squares, but Mr. Simpson's self-published book is just a rehashing of well-known paper-and-pencil techniques of construction. While I was waiting for the book, I was able to search the Internet and find free algorithms developed by others that more elegantly describe construction principles, and in such a way that one could program them fairly easily (which I did). I'm hoping a competing title, "The Zen of Magic Squares..." etc. by Clifford Pickover, will have more meat to it. ... Read more

Product Description
In his minimalist sculpture and prints, Gerhard Trieb ponders the theme of the "magic square," dealing with the traditions of modern art, exposing dissonances, and triggering related thought processes. Interested neither in portraying nature nor in using colors, Trieb has spent the last 20 years confronting the battle between nature and art, the natural and sculpted stone. As the artist himself has said, "I produce art because there is nothing else left for me."

Product Description
A symbol of the Divine, a good luck charm, a cosmogram of the world order, a template for fengshui through the ages, the luoshu, or magic squre of order three, has fascinated people of many different cultures. In this riveting account of cultural detective work, renowned mathematics educator, Frank J. Swetz relates how he uncovered the previously hidden history of the luoshu, from its Chinese origins, shrouded in legend, through its eventual association with Chinese fortunetelling, Daoism, and fengshui, to its incorporation into Islamic astrology and alchemy and its migration into Kabbalistic lore and other occult traditions of the West. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Mysterious Chinese Magic Square
The Luoshu, or magic square with 9 boxes was of major importance in Chinese cosmology and was superimposed on maps and other spatial systems.

There is much about the Luoshu in English but this is the clearest treatment of the mathematics and so highly recommended for any interesting in this oddity of math and of Chinese philosophy.

The author is a mathematician, not a sinologist so the information on the Chinese cultural aspects is limited and based on secondary sources, often out-dated ones. Still this is a good place to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended especially for mysticism and metaphysical studies shelves
Mathematics educator Frank J. Swetz presents Legacy of the Luoshu: The 4,000 Year Search for the Meaning of the Magic Square of Order Three, an in-depth study of the diverse roles that the luoshu (a 3x3 "magic square" of numbers in a grid, where all rows, columns, and diagonals add up to the same sum) has played in metaphysical and spiritual traditions worldwide. From Chinese fortunetelling to Daoism, and fengshui, to Islamic astrology and Kabbalistic lore, the luoshu has perpetually reappeared throughout global human history. Extensively researched and illustrated with a handful of black-and-white photographs, Legacy of the Luoshu offers a unique glimpse into one aspect of the history of numerology, and is highly recommended especially for mysticism and metaphysical studies shelves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Legacy of the Luoshu
Frank Swetz has done it again. In plain language he has given
the best description of the luoshu magic square that I have read.
The first half of his book is a detailed explanation of
how the magic square is an outgrowth of Chinese philosophy. Swetz very carefully explains the connection of the square
to the concepts of Yin/Yang, I Ching and Feng Shui. One can easily understand the cultural and mystical significance of
the square and its relation to cosmology and astrology. The
book contains excellent diagrams which are well documented
and copious endnotes.
The third quarter of the book gives an decent explanation
of why the square was not first developed in Europe. The
last quarter of the book discusses various miscellana about
the luoshu magic square. In all the Legacy of the Luoshu is
a fascinating read and a must for anyone who would care to
give a detailed explanation of its meaning.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Insight into Chinese Mathematics
In the Legacy Of The Luoshu, Prof. Swetz combines history with mathematics and culture to take the reader on a particular journey of understanding. He shows how mathematics evolves from human needs and provides insights into early scientific thinking.

The book is well researched and contains many interesting illustrations.Chinese beliefs concerning yin-yang forces and cosmological theories are explained and their connections with mathematics revealed.Swetz has spent many years exploring Chinese mathematics and I have enjoyed and employed his earlier research in this field.

In this latest book, he documents the Chinese discovery of the magic square of order three and traces the influence of this number square on other cultures. It is a masterfully told story by a skilled story teller. ... Read more
