Extractions: Bill Owens has been enormously successful in math competitions during his time at Macalester. Math competition exams vary in length from a few hours to several days, and usually test technical competence and ingenuity in a variety of math disciplines. Often, students will be asked to cut across disciplines to find solutions. Owens and his regular teammates, Emilia Simeonova 02 and Alex Burst 02 participated this year in the annual math competition between with teams from Macalester, St. Thomas, Carleton, St. Olaf, and Gustavus Adolphus College. Owens team placed third of 20 teams, earning Macalester third place in the competition.

"We figured we’d have trouble getting 15 students, which was our original limit. We received applications for 80 nominees and eventually accepted 23." SFU assistant professor Petr Lisonek, a camp co-organizer, attributes the phenomenal interest to teacher involvement. "B.C. high school teachers spend a lot of time coaching high performance math students for competitions," says Lisonek. Cary Chien, a math teacher of 27 years at Vancouver’s David Thompson Secondary school, thinks other factors prompted the flood of camp applicants. "At least 80 percent of the B.C. students excelling in math competitions are Asian," says Chien, whose students have won national medals and helped David Thompson place first in numerous math competitions. "Asian parents traditionally encourage their children to do well in math competitions because they want them to go to university and succeed there. Once their children succeed, that success feeds on itself," says Chien, the founder of an enriched integrated math and science program for 13 to 15 year old math whizzes at David Thompson.

The problems on these tests are interesting and challenging, stretching students beyond the normal curricular material. The AMC (8), a contest for students in grades eight and below, takes place in November. (This test corresponds to the former AJHSME.) The AMC (10) is for students in grades ten and below, and AMC (12) is for students in grade twelve and below. The test will be offered in February. (The AMC (12) corresponds to the former AHSME.)
